  • The engine I'm working on is a 1997 5.7L truck Vortec motor but should work on most 1987-2002 Chevy V8 LT1, 8.1 BBC, Vortec 5.7, 5.0 & 4.3 V6 except LS. Feel free to like or make comments if you have anything to add that I missed. Sorry for my big pumpkin head in the way of some of the shots

    That sleeve is an alignment tool also, leave it installed while you torque the retainer down so it will be correctly centered

    Is it possible to change the rear main seal and that housing gasket while it's still in the truck, without having to drop the pan??? I'm having trouble

  • @davenkaren2572

    Is it better to remove the entire housing and re-center it like you show, or just pop out the old seal, and replace by leaving the housing in the stock place? I’m at this crossroad right now…. Any advice would be very helpfull!!! Thanks!

    I wouldn't use Emery cloth, you don't want to scratch it you need to polish it with corcus cloth.

    Can you provide the torque spec for the retainer bolts? I'm sure it can't be more than 12-18 ft lbs...but I can't find the spec online (yet).

    Where did you get that white sleeve? Or where did you get the Sesl?

    I usually use assembly lube on those seals

      Fel Pro says not to in their instructions. Not sure why because I usually grease all engine seals too. Who knows. It hasn't failed yet.

    What is that part number for that rear main seal sleeve?

    • @poortouringhotwiregarage5617
      @poortouringhotwiregarage5617  3 года назад

      If you're talking about the plastic alignment sleeve, they're included when you buy a new Fel Pro main seal

      So it would be a rear main seal kit right?

    • @poortouringhotwiregarage5617
      @poortouringhotwiregarage5617  3 года назад +2

      @@tyhenio3640 Use Fel Pro part # BS40656. It comes with the alignment sleeve, rear main seal and retainer gasket.

      Just a guess here-- volume is set very low. Pick up an external mic or add some gain before uploading.

      @@x2tb Enabled the Closed Captioning today, so try hitting the CC button at the bottom of your screen and you can at least read my instructions. That's the best I can figure out right now. Sorry

    To much talking, not enough showing of what has to be done getting to the seal.
