The people of Colombia and its government have worked hard to overcome the former harsh reputation of the country.

Trendy nightlife, upscale shopping, and an array of imaginative restaurants can be found in Bogotá and Medellín, as well as several other large cities.

I love Colombia and live here most of each year. I just took a trip to the US to visit friends and family and I could not wait to return to Colombia! I don't care much for Bogota' but I love Medellin. The Metro makes a big difference in getting around the city. Violence is mostly between gangs and really doesn't affect most people in a normal residential neighborhood. Petty crime is mostly crimes of opportunity. If you lay something down, it is likely to disappear. Otherwise, common sense will keep you safe. Most cities are safer than big cities in the US, and the Colombian people are generally warm and welcoming. Come see for yourself!

A big problem in Colombia, as well, is that properties age poorly due to construction companies taking shortcuts during the project. Both my apartment buildings there had huge issues after just 3-4 years. The one in Cartagena had pieces falling off the roof, the elevators never worked, the electricity and wifi system got slower and slower, etc. etc.. The one in Medellin started having cracks in the ceilings and walls. Water streamed into the parking lots from the swimming pool above, bricks started falling off the facades, etc.. And both were built by nationally known "high quality" builders.

There is a growing number of English speaking BPO's based in Cali - seems to be becoming a "Tech City". North west and North the best areas. People very friendly - except when behind the wheel of a car and won't give an inch or let you out or let you cross the road! Still much better than the UK though. I visited Caracas and Colonia Tovar in 2003 or so, when the Venezuelans I spoke to (cab drivers, bartenders, waiters, gun shop owners even) were still in the "Let's give this guy (Chavez) a chance" frame of mind, in other words before he destroyed the economy and to some degree the country. I'm sure many normal Colombians are thinking that now, about Petro. Good people usually try to be open minded, but if he has his way Colombia is about to get the rug pulled out from under it. I like Bogota, and have visited the major cities in Colombia looking at retirement options, but I wouldn't touch it now.

Crime rates have increased dramatically in the last couple of years, especially in the big cities, to the point where even walking on street in the evening is usually not recommended even outside of the city center(take cabs everywhere instead, from an app, not random ones). Among the 1.8 million Venezuelan refugees living in Colombia at the moment there are also a whole lot of criminals with nothing to lose, capable of such brutality even Colombians (who are used to being victims of violence) are scared of them. On top of that, now with a leftist in power things may go even more south when it comes to stability/safety and economy.
