I've had blossom end rot and I fixed it with garden lime. I only lost 3 tomatoes. I put a handful of garden lime under each plant, in the garden or in a tub... no more blossom end rot ;)

First, a big huge CONGRATULATIONS!! Dude, that is so awesome! 37 days after the 100k. Unbelievable. The letter you received along with the 100k button was absolutely spot on. You have done a fantastic job with your content! You are obviously a natural teacher, but even more than that you really really do care. You so very much want to give knowledge, share knowledge and build a community. You deserve every bit of it!
Ok, now. I got at least two things from this video. First, crop rotation. I am in town. My garden is in my backyard like yours. I have a good amount of sun on one side, but not as good on the other side. I've been wracking my brain trying to think about how I could accomplish crop rotation. Now I have options thanks to you, but more importantly I have jumping off place to start any research of mine I need to do. So thank you so much for that!
Second, I used a mix that is dubbed "super soil" that I learned about from another channel. The mix contains epsom salt. Not a great deal in the scheme of things though. It is only 2 cups per the entire mix of like 2 bags of peat moss, and 2 of manure, plus other things. Make a lot of soil. I'm thinking in the future that is just not a necessary ingredient. At the amount that is added I might say it's not much, but it is the exact same amount as the oyster shells. Sounds like that is so not a good idea. Ugh.
Finally, my resulting question is, should I go back and add more oyster shells around the plants? Or some other source to increase the calcium in the soil now or will it be ok?
Thank you so much for all the effort and care you put into your videos!

      @NextLevelGardening  4 года назад +3

Hi Paula! Sorry I missed your comment before. As always thank you for your support and kind words. As far as out in calcium after the fact my favorite way is gypsum diluted in water. But you could scratch in some of the crab and lobster shell into the surface of the soil around the plant too

I use Epsom Salt on my tomatoes to give them a healthier vine and leaves. I've never heard of using them for blossom end rot. I mulch my garden with grass clippings and keep the soil evenly moist so I never have blossom end rot. If we suddenly get a lot of rain, I'll have some tomatoes split but that can't be helped.

Start with easy to grow plants IE tomatoes, cucs, green peppers are the easiest for me and then, just pace yourself 🙂 A fantastically easy-to-grow houseplant is the snake plant if you'd like to have houseplants.
Most of all, don't be too hard on yourself when plants fail. It happens and you'll learn something from each failure that you'll know for next time 🙂
Take care and happy growing! 👍🏼💙

I am the same as you...Mom was always giving produce away to the community! I do know Mom always "planted by the moon" with the Old Farmer's Almanac, so I do that too (It's free on the internet, or you can buy it at Walmart after the new year).
I never was interested until I retired. I started with herbs (basil, parsley, chives, dill) in potting soil, then bell peppers & tomatoes in containers the next year. Start small, look at the tops & bottoms of your leaves every day (you can diagnosis what's wrong thru pics on YT or the internet), water correctly, make a note to fertilize every 2 wks...Miracle Grow worked for me at first, but now I'm into more organic things. You'll feel terrible when you lose a plant, but you will learn from it. Good gardening to you!

Being # 1 doesn't come easy. Bet you have more competition than you think. Every year I start out strong. Weeds take over. And more.
Trying to have about a quarter acre garden on 10 acre property.
Last year got nothing out of garden but a couple zucchini and yellow squash. Banana and Halepino and FANTASTIC corn.
This year - trying variety trying to discover possible "cash crop".
A lot of things (like water melon ) grew early and died. (Weeds and water this year in Eastern KY)
Cabbage, lettuce...lettuce died from water and made comeback - drowning again. Really disappointed cause when I planted them they looked dead and I wondered why I was bothering. They thrived, then drown then made comeback..now drowning..
Beans ? Popped up like magic when I wasn't watching. Healthy plants on weed free ground ...left alone...bunnies ate to the nubs.
Last year corn 🌽 (my fave) was beautiful and unharmed. This year I had flashback to year I told my neighbors the Chimpanzees had destroyed my corn
This year picked 2 ears from first of 5 rows. Thinking about how nice it was going to be to pick whenever I wanted fresh corn 🌽. NO comparison to store or (gag me restaurant corn). Sweet and so tender I might not have needed teethe. Got busy 2 days and when I went back and entire 2 rows of corn had half ear missing
No bugs. No chimpanzees breaking stalks. Bird poop in leaves exposed the happy culprits. Black Birds..
So fighting them now knowing chimps will be here soon (raccoon?)
But about same day I was heartbroken over corn got a thrill from some sprouted grocery store red potatoes I had put in a tire and covered with mulch. Red potatoes everywhere !
Failed years ago with sweet potato so really hadn't expected to grow potatoes which are " cheap" anyway.
Now I'm hoping for sweets too .
The more you know. The more you try I think you will find nature is amazing !
This year great start to watermelons - choked out by weeds and water..
Zucchini and yellow squash ? Easy overload which teaches you to learn uses. Fresh yellow squash in stir fry and SOUP (better than noodles which I love). Zucchini Bread - my own GREAT recipe after year experiments, zucchini lasagna...
Bountiful banana peppers , Halepino (and finally a freezer bag full of my fav - reds). Green 🍏 sad but there.
Bush green beans became vines after I put up bunny fence.
Onions. Cantaloupe vines just starting. Small pumpkins vines all over yard. (Need to finally make my first pumpkin roll) And Yikes - what is that? Broccoli.
So. As much as we kill there is still morem. Stuff just wants to live !

    Yay 200K!
Congratulations...I started watching your AMAZING and very helpful site soon after I lost my job on 3/20 (omigosh, no unemployment comp yet!!) and began REALLY devoting MASSIVE amounts of my newly-found free time in my 1800', compacted clay garden (lots of other problems too). At present I have 28 cabbages, collards, carrots, onions, potatoes, peppers (5 types), lots of herbs for companion planting & eating & bees, cukes, & zukes, with tomatoes (about a zillion, but I've lost 2 rounds to frost!), bush & pole beans, sweet potatoes, and a watermelon coming up. I also have a big bed of perennials for bees & other pollinators.
So your site has given me so much information! It's so valuable!
The part about the compost is excellent. I'm a massive fan and I'm lucky that a neighbor now's lawns & gives me the material in big sacks. As our neighborhood is not one to waste money on spraying lawns, I am delighted to take it.

Another place you can buy bamboo if you need really long canes is a fishing tackle store. They are used for cane fishing poles. They are usually stained and finished with some sort of marine grad finish and are really attractive on account of that. You can get ten foot and 16 foot poles, and if I remember correctly they are about $6 or $7 each, at least here in Georgia.

Fruit is growing wild all over their 11/2 acres, Muscadine grapes 20’ tall, huge trees of wild berries black, blue elder and kumquats. I don't have much problem with Blossom End Rot as long as there's not an over abundance of rain. I dig my planting holes extra-deep, drop in a whole egg or two, backfill a couple of inches, then plant my tomatoes as usual. They love the calcium and the nitrogen, and usually it's the only fertilizer I use until mid-summer. I do this with peppers too, and it has increased my yield tremendously.

    Congratulations on your 200k subscribers!
I transplanted Beefsteaks, Cherry tomatoes, Chard, Chives, Green Onions, and Red Bell peppers.
I'm using 8 gallon square containers with drain holes.
Washed Pea Gravel and Pistachio shells, as a base for aeriation.
Then coffee filters and M.G. Garden Soil. It's working out great.
    Been using little kabob
bamboo sticks to support plants and check deep into the soil. If they come out feeling moist with soil stuck to them, then I know it's not water time.
The Cherry tomatoes leafs were droopy. So I got them out of my grow room, into the sunlight they perked right up.
Thought I had over fertilized them.
I'm new at this so I haven't been able to figure out what the leaves are telling me. Some had cupped up leaves in one container and others cupped down leaves but once they hit real sun light they all perked up. Perhaps it was the Dr. Earth 4-6-3.?
Light green needs more sun light, and yellow leaves can be mistaken for a nitrogen deficiency. When it's a lack of sun. Of the 43 days under LEDS , they've had 3 total days of actual sun.
The Swiss Chard and Chives are ready to harvest.
    Bell Peppers are at 10".
Beefsteaks and Cherries are 12" to 18".
I learned one thing, don't start plants too early in colder climates. On the bright side, I have 5 LED GROW LIGHTS for next year.

I have used epsom salt sparingly on my tomatoes. Our soils where I am (desert southwest) are very alkaline and contain lots of calcium. Likewise our municipal water. Since epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, it contains both magnesium and sulfur. Our soils tend to be low in magnesium, and the sulfur helps make the soil less alkaline. Back when I was adding fertilizer to my garden every season., I used a mixture of cottonseed meal, bone meal, and a small amount of epsom salt for the whole garden. I had good success with that mixture. In a different location , I would have to figure out something that would be more appropriate to conditions there. I don't know if I was "right" in my reasoning because I don't have a lot of friends who garden, and I just sort of muddle along. Your program and others I have recently discovered are really helpful to my fund of knowledge. I also have always used coffee grounds in my compost, for organic matter, and because I mistakenly believed it would add some acid. Glad to have your comments about the neutral pH of coffee used coffee grounds. Thanks.

Missed your tomato Tuesday, so I thought I'd check to see if it was posted or not. Hope you are well.
Fortunately, I got the rock phosphate, but it took 3 weeks to get here. The company I ordered from through Amazon said they were having issues getting supplies, then there was problems with the packages of rock phosphate themselves, and they could not send them out. Don't know what happened to the bags but it slowed down distribution. Anyway, feeling lucky I finally got mine!

That was me that suggested the watermelon boxes from the supermarket!!!! Glad you liked my idea. I have been doing this chicken thing for almost 20 years now, so I do occasionally come up with a good idea. Another good thing about those boxes is that once the chicks move into the coop, you can fold the box up and store it for the next time. I have had as many as 12 chicks in one with no problems. I did put a couple of holes in the sides to put some roosts in for them. I keep all the food and water down at one end and the heat source down at the other end so they have plenty of room to run around and and be in or out of the heat as they choose.

I plan to use the Asprin, Soda & Tomato Formula to spray on my Tomato plants weekly. The excess I'll pour on top of the soil now instead of storing it. Here's an easy way to add phosphorus to your garden when you don't have rock phosphate. Peel a dozen cucumbers and chop the peels up into little bits. Place them on a skillet that you don't mind getting a bit burnt. Burn the cucumber skins and then grind them finely in a food processor. We burn our skins outside in bbg smoker using only wood, and then take the wood ashes and burnt cucumber powder and combine it with alfalfa meal. We add our homemade compost to our beds and reinforce the compost with the alfalfa-burnt cucumber peel-wood ashes. Our veggies thrive on this. There is another source of phosphorus that can be applied, but I won't mention the name. I will say that if one drinks a lot of water, there will be an abundant amount of this free fertilizer.
