The 1st person should've told you about the pickles on the hot dog.. & more importantly he should've told you that it's customary to have peppers on the Italian Beef & the sandwich is to be dipped & soggy.. That's what makes an Italian Beef & Italian Beef.

Great review! Admittedly..I grew up & remain a fan of Al's Beef as I do love a great Italian Beef. I favor my beef sandwich "dipped" in the delicious juice with sweet peppers. Heaven! Portillo's hot dogs are so good. Friends had them served at their wedding. Everyone was pleased :-) Hope you had a great time in and about my fair city of Chicago. Thank you for introducing me to so many places in the GTA. I am a frequent visitor for work. :-)
i've been eating portillos since '76. with the italian beef, they add au jus, you can get it dry, usually you order normal, it's kind of soaked, but you can get it "drowned".

The burgers though.........if you ever go back you need to have a burger. They are absolutely UNREAL. Their frys, also are quite noteworthy. And by noteworthy I mean exceptional.

I love this episode lol. My family and I live in Maryland but my grandpa buys Portillo sandwich kits for my family and ships it to us and they are SOOOO good. I really wish you had tried it with the peppers on the sub though. The peppers they use are amazing and makes the sandwich much better.

Born and raised Chicago boy here. A Chicago dog really isn't a Chicago dog if any of the components are missing. Its the way they all interact with each other that makes that unique taste. I almost never eat raw tomatoes except for when they are on a hot dog for this very reason. I love Portillos, I go there all the time and get both of these items. Next time try the Beef with Sweet peppers (and giardiniera if you like hot peppers).

Pickels always go on Chicago style red hots. There is also Celery salt. Try the peppers on the Italian Beef next time for more flavor. Portillos rocks, and your friend was spot on.....

I don't think all Chicago deep dish places are just for tourists. The main ones like Giordiano's and Lou Malnati's maybe but I've have great deep dish and stuffed pies elsewhere. That style of pie defines the region and I see nothing wrong with it. When I visited I had family that took me around to different places and I got to eat at some of the best places ever and I don't just mean pizza. I'm a big hot dog person and I loved eating me some char dogs. And I must say that I've have some of the best thin crust I've ever had in Chicago.

Ken, if you don't like dill pickles at least try Bread & Butter ones. Just try it. Here in the Deep South when you get a BBQ pulled pork sandwich we put Bread & Butter pickles on it and sometimes cole slaw. YUM
i LOVE pickles my dad makes like 40 quarts of dill pickls every year because we have a really good garden because we live out in the country where we have some RELLY good soil

I had to go to Chicago for a flight to DC (don't ask why) and we were layed over in Midway Airport for about 4 hours. My aunt and I tried a chicago style hot dog and it was awesome. I normally put pickles, onions, mustard and ketchup on my hot dogs now.
Next time you should get their burgers, cheese fries, chocolate cake shake, and their chili, it’s my regular order at that location and it’s so amazing 🤤

Good Choice! This is a personal West Chicago burb favorite, if you like Food. Chicago is the place, I am quite lucky I have friends and family in Chicago, so it's worth the 8 hour drive to go once a year!
I would suggest getting a milkshake at places like this so you can rate that too, since as you said, Coke is Coke. Another fun review, and it makes me want to try Portillo's.

In Chicago it is called, dragging it through the garden. My fave is chili cheese with onions. And, yes Portillos started with dogs, beef sandwich, they perfected. Get it dipped in gravy, wanna go full Chicago, Gardiniera.
Don't know where you're from or where you got your information but as a lifelong Chicagoan I never heard of "dragging it through the garden" or the outrage of putting chili and cheese on one. A real Chicago Hot Dog has the basics of mustard, relish, onions and sport peppers and depending on the neighborhood you're in, it may have tomatoes, pickles and celery salt. Gene's and Jude's on River Road is the best and all they put on them is mustard relish, onions and sport peppers.
Good on you for doing the pickle. I gave my british friend SO much shit for taking the tomatoes off of his hot dog. also, I personally would have told you to go for sweet peppers, although I got spicy sometimes because I do like the kind of spice that you get with Giardinara.

I'm going to Chicago by way of Dallas in April. What other good hot dog places are there besides Portillo's?

I would suggest getting a milkshake at places like this so you can rate that too, since as you said, Coke is Coke. Another fun review, and it makes me want to try Portillo's.

In Chicago it is called, dragging it through the garden. My fave is chili cheese with onions. And, yes Portillos started with dogs, beef sandwich, they perfected. Get it dipped in gravy, wanna go full Chicago, Gardiniera.
Don't know where you're from or where you got your information but as a lifelong Chicagoan I never heard of "dragging it through the garden" or the outrage of putting chili and cheese on one. A real Chicago Hot Dog has the basics of mustard, relish, onions and sport peppers and depending on the neighborhood you're in, it may have tomatoes, pickles and celery salt. Gene's and Jude's on River Road is the best and all they put on them is mustard relish, onions and sport peppers.

also, I personally would have told you to go for sweet peppers, although I got spicy sometimes because I do like the kind of spice that you get with Giardinara.
