My son was one of the first in the US to do the peanut oral therapy and I was a complete skeptic at first, but also desperate for him to exist without fear of cross-contamination. Elementary school was terrifying. It is well-known by those with allergies that those who do not have allergies simply do not have the capacity to understand how deadly (literally) these can sometimes be and understandably do not take precautions like they should, which leads to cross-contamination and trips to either the restroom or emergency room, depending on the circumstance. Anyway, we did the therapy for six years and now my son is on a maintenance dose of two peanuts per day, which keeps him "bite-safe", meaning if he accidentally eats a peanut nothing will happen to him We started with a trace amount of peanut particles and worked our way up to 8 peanuts per day, which was too much for his stomach and quality of life. We backed it down until it was tolerable (he still hates the taste and smell). At 2 peanuts per day, he can tolerate up to 8 peanuts without allergic reaction. The daily peanut therapy is not fun for him in any capacity, but the improvement in quality of life is better in a profound way. No longer does he need to avoid ice cream shops or birthday parties with friends. He can eat at a restaurant or a cookout without worrying (parents included). This therapy works. Thank you doc for creating this forum, I know the video is not specifically about peanuts, but the premise is applicable to many food ailments as you've expressed. I will leave with one final thought, DO NOT perform this on your own, make sure you go to a licensed physician who specializes in food allergies AND has a licensed nutritionist on staff. During the first year of therapy, all visits were in the doctor's office where emergency medicine could have been performed if needed.

Videos like this make me realize how fortunate I am when it comes to food tolerance. There are foods I _won't_ eat, either for ethical reasons or because I simply don't like the way they taste, but there is literally nothing I _can't_ eat as long as it's considered safe to ingest. This video also drives home not to judge what other people eat. Sometimes they have no choice.

i have a similar story so heres another anecdote; a genetically mutated version of rheumatoid arthritis was passed down to me from my mom at birth which was only diagnosed years and years later after sending blood samples to every expert on the planet for years. the auto immune problem rendered me basically paralyzed waste down most of my childhood due to the extreme pain. It later switched and jumped up to my shoulders in highschool years and it was also the same extreme pain which made me incapable of holding up a pencil outwards. at about the age of 18 i have fallen into suicidal depression as nothing as helping and there were no answers from medical experts. at about the age of 23/24 i came across a book called "the cheese trap" which mentioned dairy and its detrimental effect on auto immune disorders including the one that was affecting me. after hearing accounts of other people struggling with the same issues and finding relief in the act of avoiding dairy i decided to switch to a fully plant based diet ( both for moral reasons as well as this hell i was living through ), no more than 3 months later my life long battle with rheumatism came to an end. its now been 3.5 years and ive been pain free since then. Im shocked and appalled at how nobody ever mentioned diet to me regarding my auto immune disorder.... If only i knew earlier i could've not missed out on my childhood and avoided this god awful depression.

I am super glad that it worked for you. I had a similar experience except it started in my early twenties and didn't end till my mid thirties. Wasn't anywhere as dibilitating as yours but I was in quite a lot of pain and was an athlete prior to it so I did struggle with depression due to having to give up all of my activities. My wrists were so bad that I even had to stop playing video games which, after having to give up my sports, seemed like a real kick in the gonads. Like you, I was surprised that no even mentioned anything about diet especially since, after being an athlete, I was no stranger to restrictive eating. I think the main issue is that, while it works for some, for many it does not and that's perhaps why doctors don't recommend it. That's the only reason that I can think of.

I have used a vegan diet and stress reduction to reclaim as much of my health as possible. I would certainly go back to a doctor if I thought there was any hope it would help me. Excellent video. Thanks for not condemning Mikhaila and others of us who do not fare well on plant-based diets. While my own history is not nearly as severe as Mikhaila's, I have also been the object of the anger, criticisms and even hatred she has for needing to eat a meat-based diet. I tried all the tips you suggested under the supervision of licensed physicians and registered dieticians and the reintroduction approach unfortunately does not enable me to eat more than small amounts of grains (wheat is especially problematic), though I can eat moderate amounts of tubers, fruits and some other plant foods. Grains are not essential to human health anyway, so I'm not bothered by it. My DNA test shows that I have genes from Neanderthals and other hunter gatherers as well as lactase persistence genes that may help explain why I thrive on a diet based on meat and dairy. The improvements in my lab numbers as well as my experience have been astonishing.

Don't overeat,… extend time between eating. Can you pee with a strong flow? More time in between eating allows for stronger pee flows,.. which is an indicator of free flow within ones body, rather than congestion. Understand auto-phagy in keeping good/great body integrity. Btw, beer is good food, it doesn't gunk the body, whereas starches gunk the body, lymph and such.

I gave Esselstyns diet a try and had to give it up after 3-4months. I had insane allergies as kid with tons of skin/healthissues. But I grew up with trash junk food.
Once I introduced IF and focused more on whole foods, meat and cheese heavy within 1year almost all my allergies went from unbearable during summer to completely nonexistent. So for 2 summers in a row I had no allergies anymore at ALL. Did Esselstyns and my allergies came back in such a force that it sometimes knocked me out for 2-6hours lol.

I've been going through a lot of your videos the last few days and I have been really enjoying them. I wanted to say, that as someone with IBS who has tried different diets and really struggled with what I could eat without symptoms plus what science tells us is a healthy diet not matching up with what I can easily eat; I certainly understand what you're talking about when you say people want to believe that whatever diet they "feel good" on must also be a healthy diet. The diet that I previously felt really, really good on (as in the least gastro symptoms) was a low carb & low fodmap diet while a vegan diet made me feel worse in the long run. So of course I wanted to believe that I could eat unlimited meat and it wouldn't affect my overall longevity. But eventually I came to the conclusion that a diet someone might be on for medical reasons does not mean that it's a diet that's good for longevity. Reading the book Fiber Fueled helped me be more comfortable with reintroduction and I'm now eating lots of foods I would get horrible intense symptoms from previously, with only a small flare up here and there when I try to move too fast. The only thing I don't think I'll ever be able to have again is lactose but I'm actually quite content with soy/oat milk and occasional vegan or low-lactose cheese. I do worry that a lot of these influencers only stick with their diets because they're making money from being on the fringe. I think we saw that quite a bit with vegan influencers as well, who were all doing a predominantly raw or otherwise restrictive vegan diets while covering up health issues. I mean on the carnivore side, Paul Saladino, Mr. Plants-are-toxic himself has started adding in fruit and honey because he was obviously getting desperate for carbs and wanted more variety in his diet. I have to say I feel for Mikhaila though because I do believe this is the only thing she's found so far that's worked for her and I probably would have been a lot more hesitant about pushing through flare ups if my flares were horrendous joint pain and rashes instead of bloat, cramping and diarrhea. I believe her when she says she doesn't really want to be on the diet she's on. I myself am feeling so incredibly grateful now that my diet has even more variety and I certainly was never as limited as Mikhaila has to be. Overall I think this video was an excellent response and really commend your level headed approach.

I had problems with IBS , psoriasis, that were getting better with eating meat. Turns out I had candida overgrowth. It is proven that antibiotics cause disbiosis by favouring yeast overgrowth . Also acid surpression increases candida and e coli . In this case , of course eating meat was better than eating whole grains for the gut , but not for the arteries. Once I healed candida , IBS and psoriasis are gone and I can eat everything.

For anyone wondering, the most likely explanation for her symptoms is that she was having frequent allergic reactions to something present in her diet, and either her doctors failed to find and eliminate the allergen, or her/her family made the mistake of assuming that her doctors were incompetent and didn’t let them finish the process of elimination that all kids her in position have to go through. When she started the carnivore diet, she eliminated that/those allergens by default; because she eliminated everything except for one thing that she knew she could eat. That is not healthy. In fact she is very likely to develop serious health conditions as she ages as a direct result of this diet. But because her symptoms were so painful, she is resistant to anything and anyone who would suggest that she should stop.
It is pretty common these days for families to become frustrated with doctors whenever the process of diagnosing a certain illness isn’t a straightforward process that can be completed and treated in a single appointment. Sometimes the cause of an allergic reaction is something which rarely causes allergic reactions. And that means that ALL doctors will have a hard time finding the offender, because that particular food item is going to be very low on their list of suspects. You always start with the most common causes first when you’re going by process of elimination. So first you try wheat, then dairy, and so on and so forth until you eliminate something and her symptoms improve. If the family doesn’t understand or doesn’t trust the process, they will sometimes assume their doctors are incompetent and stop going. When they go to a new doctor, often a specialist, the process of elimination either starts over or stops completely. E.g. If you go to an autoimmune specialist, they’re going to treat the symptoms as if they were caused by an autoimmune disorder; Not an allergic reaction.
Her parents probably failed her here. They quit on their doctors and assumed they were incompetent, which lead to a litany of misdiagnoses that dragged out her symptoms for years. So the second she found a diet that alleviated her symptoms - even though it will take years of her life - she was fully committed. It’s truly sad, because it doesn’t need to be this way. Two weeks in an inpatient facility with the right specialists would probably be enough time for doctors to figure out what she can and cannot eat. But she’s committed to eating nothing but meat, so she won’t do it and won’t even entertain the possibility of living a long, happy life.

What did I do? I read up on it, avoided the foods I didn't tolerate well, took some probiotics. That helped. Still remained vegan. Wouldn't justify animal exploitation for my food preferences. Then I had a second round of antibiotics and my gut has been perfect ever since. All this happened while I was vegan, which I still am.
My gut is now made of steel. I can eat fibre, white bread, any vegetable, fruit, seeds, nuts, grains, starches - nothing happens. Never felt better or been healthier. Veganism taught me and highlighted to me how my gut could be healthier, which is now is :)

Re: climate change, the focus shouldn't be what has bigger carbon foot print. The question should be, why is carbon the enemy? Carbon is essential to plant life. If there is excess carbon in the atmosphere, plants show rapid growth, with low level of carbon, plants grow slower. So, earth is equipped with mechanisms to achieve equilibrium. How is carbon the enemy? And if CO2 is indeed the culprit, then what is the correct amount of CO2 in the atmosphere? And if high temperature is bad, then what is the correct temperature? I don't expect any answer, because no climate advocate will go near true scientific scrutiny.

    • @WhatIsMisophonia
      @WhatIsMisophonia 10 месяцев назад +1

Yes, higher co2 and reduced frosts in a warmer climate could, if they were the only important variables, increase plant growth. The trouble is, climate change is also responsible for things that counteract plant growth, and particularly crop grow; Mainly drought, flooding, and heat stress. Warmer air does hold more moisture, but the added rain would not fall evenly; Some areas get too much while desertification gets much worse in other areas. You have to think about the massive ecological damage associated with changing weather patterns, and not least of all the fact that much of the co2 and heat is being absorbed by the ocean, which is held in a very delicate balance. At the very least, acidification of the oceans can inhibit phytoplankton growth. If climate changes too much over too short a time, you get mass die offs/extinctions in general. Though these plants and animals would eventually be replaced with more heat tolerant subtropical/tropical variants, that would take time, most people would prefer to avoid all the mayhem which would likely extend over a lengthy time before equilibrium is established. And even if we somehow cool off the planet, those extinct plants and animals won't come back.

I have never heard of anyone having a similar experience but I went gluten-free for a few months last year. The diet gave me gastrointestinal issues and I found myself extremely stressed for the second month after a normal first month. I was stubborn and just made nutritional alterations to handle symptoms. In the third month I developed joint pain in my hands. I would eventually get episodes of extreme fatigue along with intense hand pain. I kept going for another two months after the joint pain developed because I didn’t see how not eating gluten could be connected. But it got worse and spread to more joints: elbows, neck, back, knees, feet. I eventually started eating gluten again, doubtful that it would help but thinking it was pointless to restrict my diet when I felt much worse anyways and my symptoms have slowly improved. I just have some residual hand pain and occasionally knee pain and costochondritis now. It has been almost 5 months, so it is a slow recovery. I don’t know why a gluten-free diet would cause those problems: my assumption is simply that my microbiome really likes gluten containing foods

From a climate point of view, I don't think that the fact of raising livestock for meat itself is the problem, but living in a food system where the production is centralized and the animals aren't being fed the diets that would allow them to functionally participate in the ecosystem (grain-fed over grassfed, for example) as well as the concentration of pollutants (CAFOs versus pastured meats), as well as the need to transport meat over vast distances, instead of reverting back to more localized, environmentally harmonious food systems.

Hey Gill! I have watched a lot of your videos, and also watched a lot of low carb people videos. I understand your research, but I can’t help but notice a contradiction in your methods when the low carb people point it out, indirectly. Basically, when you do a Randomized trial, and increase / decrease saturated fat or red meat or carbs etc, the RCTs don’t take into account that food is not eaten in vaccum. It might happen that saturated fat isn’t the problem, but when eaten along side with carbs can cause issues. So when doing a rct with increased and decreased saturated fat for e.g. another constant is the carb or glucose content which is present on both sides. Thus by definition this RCT can’t prove saturated fat is the culprit. the only way is the elimination diet way, or completely disjoin set based diets. If you eliminate everything except saturated fat, what happens? What am I missing?

    • @NutritionMadeSimple

you can easily move beyond the SFA quagmire: the crux is ApoB (that's how SFA is thought to raise CV risk)
one could hypothesize that somehow ApoB stops causing CVD in a low carb or low fat or Mediterranean or DASH or Whole30 diet (I´ve heard this argument of exceptionalism in many forms). it just doesn´t carry scientific weight until the exception is formally demonstrated with outcome data
(in fact we can hypothesize any risk factor ceases to matter in a specific context. we can come up with a mechanistic model for any risk factor and any diet in 5mins on Pubmed)

    • @kshtagrawal1

@@NutritionMadeSimple thanks for replying! I didn't mean to narrow down on Saturated Fats or one particular thing. But since I watch your videos, I know better than jumping to mechanistic explanations like apoB and that we need to dumb it down. I know from the mechanistic conclusions it's easy to draw incorrect conclusions. In your opinion, do you think we need such strict diets to really test out one hypothesis than others? Or do you believe the evidence without these is still good.
Personally, I am almost a vegetarian, and I ate low fat for the longest time. The only Animal product I really ate was low fat skimmed milk. But somehow my cholesterol etc was wayyy high. I have just added chicken and eating better, trying to control carbs instead of fats, and found better success. But again, watching you videos, I know better than jumping to conclusion. But at the same time, the lack of clarity causes people to not he strict with any one kind of a diet. So if yes, foods themselves might be OK, bu in combination might be bad, a confused line of thought might be more dangerous. All in all, I feel extremely confused and not sure what diet I should follow! Hence these questions ☺️

I think we have as much evidence (if not more) for ApoB as for the other major risk factors. we can hypothesize an exception for any of them but until it's proven, precautionary principle dictates we assume the major risk factors apply

Wonder if the dreadful nutritional quality of food we eat does not trigger the auto immune systems too much and gets it off kilter. Also, microbiome/caeserian lack of bacteria transfer might e a bigger deal as studies on autism seem to be greatly helped with bacteria/fecal transplant. I think we should connect these dots. There is also the possibility of c-difficult types of events messing up the systems as well. Still, I come back to ride in autism and obesity as they relate to quality of food.

I highly doubt that someone who is in good health will change their diet just because of her story. People who are desperate might consider it, but I don't see a problem with that.

About the lab grown meat. It is obtained from some foetus solution from cows. For one tube of solution they need several cows is what I saw in a video. Would be doing a video on that?

In the past, I did not have health insurance and in a very real way see my uninsured years in the same way. I had to take care of myself. That meant learning what I could (no internet then) and manage to try to stay healthy. The appendicitis was $$$costly and so were the kidney stones, but somehow I managed. Now that I am insured I am in somewhat the same boat. With hypertension and tachycardia I did not get the answers I wanted.
So what I was getting from the dramatically changing blood pressure readings were pat answers from a PA. While I did not like them, I understood why. The money making aspect of medicine is similar to an assembly line. There is only so much time allowed for each unit before less profit is made and the only protocols for treatment are medically defensible $. Possible treatments that can be very effective but are only supported by small studies are not allowed.
That left me to do daily research. I would look at scholarly studies of all kinds and a lot of them seemed to have merit. I improved my diet greatly and that left supplements. The bar was low though. I wanted to see real research and would only take something that was considered safe.
It worked. I no longer have any arrhythmias (the ablation did not work) and it was in the form of taurine, an essential amino acid. After several very hard bike rides where I reached 170+ bpm, they were never triggered. My blood pressure also went down to a point where my meds were drastically reduced.
Insurance or no insurance and like Mikhalla, I still have to take care of myself to get the best results

I have had RA for 45 yrs. I am 75.
I have no idea how to do this. That makes sense. I’ve been on prednisone for a very long time. I would like to stop it but I can’t. The doctor wants to use meds strong ones. I can’t tolerate them usually. I want to do this by food and I don’t know how. I just want to test things out like you’re saying, but I don’t know how. I am very careful what I eat, but it seems like my pain never goes away, no matter what I eat and I can’t not eat anything. Plus, I’m losing weight and muscle. help please!

Empathy, assuming people are trying their best. You are very good at that. I do feel like online personalities that have health issues promoting it as a general diet is, overall, dangerous but I know they're coming from a point of view on what's helped them so will defend their position emotionally.
When I had chronic neck, mid, low back pain, hip pain to the point I couldn't walk, knee tendonitis in both knees, plantar fasciitis and coccyx pain that meant I couldn't stand for more than 5 mins without being in pain my diet was total crap. I didn't care that my cholesterol was high. What do I care about heart disease when I'm 29 and barely able to move properly? Only until I solved the pain I was able to consider my diet - because I actually wanted to live.
