  • This week Mike and Jude are joined by Kathrin Hille to discuss Taiwan after the inauguration of Taiwanese President Lai, and what it means for the United States. Kathrine Hille is the Greater China Correspondent at the Financial Times, where she covers Taiwan, regional security, and hardware technology.

The current president Lai has minority vote and support. It is in his interest to put the cross strait issue on the table to win the majority support, which is a risk for all parties involved.
The new government has the lowest approval rate in history compared with other newly elected governments. The new government has restrained options to gain public support because many issues have no easy solutions; thus, since inauguration took place, the Lai government wanted to make china in every issue on attacking the opposition parties, seeking support from Taiwanese people even though the Chinese involvement in those accusations are unreasonable.
My opinion and forecast is this government will seek political confrontation within the nation for the next four years, and the polls supporting the current administration will eventually drop to a concerning figure.

Why is Taiwan defence spending round 1.6% of GDP & not 5% or higher?
