  • Celebrated writer David Sedaris may be one of the only authors alive who can fill concert venues just so people could listen to him read. While audiences feel like a distant memory during the coronavirus pandemic, he spoke to Jeff Glor about how the things he's still found to laugh about and his new book, "The Best of Me," a collection of his best essays and stories.

I absolutely love these books. I especially enjoy listening to him read his own work. He's a terrific reader of his own work.

Love David Sedaris, have for more years than I care to count now. Crazy relatives should worry more that they have a writer among them.

I love him so much. Plain and simple. I love the whole family, as I 'know' them through his writing, except for Amy. I love Amy on her own merit.

I love you David...if you are ever in Denver, come on down to lakewood I love picking trash too...I love your style, I love your humor. I love everything about your delivery. I'm kinda like that too. I should just carry a recorder on cause when I set to write it isn't the same. Love you, you;re the best.

Cool Sedaris what you do! I also pick up trash but in Miami and people doesn’t know how rewarding that is!! Now I’m intrigued by your books! I have to pick one!

July 2022-----I began picking up trash in my neighborhood in 1993, after I bought my house there. It is a part of my daily exercise routine, walking and trash removal. I use a light weight set of tongs, so I don't have to bend down, or touch anything icky. I place the trash in a 5 gallon bucket, I also carry. I was surprised how often I find loose change. Anymore, people won't pick up even a dropped quarter, let alone a penny. One street I frequent is near a couple bars,....I routinely find crumpled dollar bills, near the curbs.

There were a few pieces I had never read before, which drastically shifted my perception of him. One is a sad story about a motherless bear. He had received a huge amount of feedback from people who had read it in an earlier book, and who were upset about his attitude toward animals...yet he chose to include it, evidently in order to upset and anger a lot more people; he ridicules their feelings they had shared with him about it, in the book. He also included a (fictional) piece in which he states that he and his boyfriend (or husband), who had two small sons, consciously, and willingly, gave them, permanently, to a criminal whom they knew was a pedophile

I've not yet purchased one of David's books, but I'm about to. My worry is that the stories will be lost without his voice, I'll let you know.

All of his books have audiobook versions that are read by him. They make a world of difference.

As I sit here, I can see David's books perched prominently on my bookshelf. His words are imbued with his voice, so reading them is no less powerful than hearing them read aloud―even by him. Those very words inspired me to quit smoking. His struggles felt like my struggles, and I thought that if he could quit, then so might I. I hope you find the books just as enlightening.

Whatever you feel about others, can you keep it to yourself? I don't care if you think people are lazy or if they don't wear pants. There's bigger reasons why that isn't happening. The pants wearing....
