Another thing about investing is that when you keep your money in a savings account, the interest is actually lower than the rate of inflation, so unless you diversify and INVEST you will actually lose value over time 😖

One thing that I’ve learned so far in my 20’s is that if you don’t have the money to pay back a medical bill or some other kind of unexpected expense, call the company and inquire about payment plan options. And be honest about what you can afford to pay per month. WAY better than letting the bill sit and go to collections.

Great video! I think one of the challenges is also like trying to weigh up should we be kind of "using the money" for experiences / lifetime adventures vs saving up for houses etc that will put us on a steadier path in the future. There's always that conflict of like which is better, or how at least should you have a balance? I spent almost the past 10 years living in different countries, from NYC, London to Hong Kong (now I'm back in Australia) working in fashion marketing, and there always will be that kind of internal conflict of whether or not I should have been more financially savvy (as my peers have houses and stuff now) but I'm also incredibly grateful for my experiences too.
So yeah that's kind of the internal conflict that I'm sure everyone has too, how do you balance between having that financial awareness to gear up and start building towards a path of stability, while also making the most of your 20's (where you might have least responsibilities - in terms of mortgages etc), and you know experiencing everything you want to...

I am now 27 and working in accounting. I also track my expenses in excel per paycheck not per month. It’s very helpful! My biggest financial mistake was spending my financial aid money on a boob job in my early twenties lol I had to get student loans for the last two years of college and now have that debt and I could have had debt less in student loans if I used the money correctly. It’s the only debt I have now but I’m gonna get it gone soon!

Normally I'd say you're still so young you didn't waste much time, but the last 12 years has been incredible for the stock market. Dow has multiplied by 5 (and more than doubled since the peak in 2007 before the crisis). But over the long haul, the market should still increase quite a bit. I'm hoping 10% average annualized. So every decade, on average, your money should double (net of inflation). That means every dollar you can invest in an index fund etf now should be worth $8 in today's money in 30 years. A $5 sandwich is a $40 sandwich if you could have invested the money instead.

I’m so aligned with your tips. I do most of these things already but it’s just reassuring to see that other people think the same. The point about rent resonates with me so much. I’ve been living in apartments “below my possibilities” for a few years now because I can save so much this way, but sometimes I get jealous of people living in super amazing apartments - but I know I’m doing the right thing.

Great advice on so many levels. The rent question is big one....can't believe the prices especially in the Tri-state (NYC/CT/NJ) area. If you invest in a diversified, low cost, index fund etf (like IVV) over the long term you will almost certainly not lose any money. Over only a couple-year period you could. If you keep it in there for 15, 20, 30 years, though, you should not lose anything, and on average, your money will multiply ×8 after 30 years (assuming normal inflation of 2-3%). If the market is down after a period of 15 or more years, then the world would have to be having some major problems, like basically be coming to an end. If you choose to keep the same money in a savings account, paying close to 0% interest, inflation would erode the value of your savings by 50%. Would you rather multiply your money by 8 or cut it in half? It's easy to invest. Open an account with any online brokerage that charges $0 commission. Put your money in a diversified index etf. Add to it every once in a while - maybe each month. Let it bake. After 30 years, look at what you've got. Remind yourself every time youre about to make a nonessential purchase that the opportunity cost of the item is actually 8 times the sticker price, since you could put it in your index fund instead.

a good reason to push anyone on the fence about starting to invest is to understand that you NEED to invest simply to keep up with the rate of inflation every year. if you just leave your money in the bank, then you're actually losing money every year due to its new lower value. your savings or checking account interest cannot actually give you a real return on your money when it can't even keep up with the rate of inflation. savings and checking account interest rates are the lowest they've ever been and they're not going to drastically improve. whereas if you were to do even a safe investment like a broad index fund of the top 505 companies such as the S&P 500 without even investing in a single other stock, the average annulized total return for the S&P 500 index fund over the past 90 years has been around 10%. meaning even if you were to only invest in this one broad index fund, you would turn a 100 thousand dollar investment into 1 million dollars!

Investing your money right now is VERY risky and our economy could very possibly collapse any day now. Also, owning a home and being a landlord is incredibly stressful. Things break, tenants don’t pay or destroy the place and it’s 100% your responsibility. Not to mention, as a landlord you can’t evict anyone right now for non payment.
