I am a black female and graduated with an electrical engineering major last year at the age of 22. In my classes there were only one to two other girls max (and only two other black people and I was in the south so it isn't like the percentage of black was low). I did notice the class below me had more girls so that was good. Not having many girls in electrical engineering did suck but I still had a lot of guy friends on top of the girl that was there. I was only one of two students who graduated with summa cum laude in electrical engineering and the other was a guy. I was very proud to beat the stereotype and I never once felt looked down on because I was a girl or black (even though it definitely happens). I was acknowledged by others and even asked for help and worked as a tutor for engineering courses. Do not let your gender, background, or race define who you are. I strongly believe with hard work or dedication that you can do anything (trust me I am not that smart lol). I just worked very hard and kept my head on straight. I now work my dream job as an ASIC Hardware Engineer for space systems. Don't let anything stop you. If I can do it, so can you! Sorry for the long message, I am just passionate about people knowing that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to. (Remember I was an engineering major not an English one lol)

Oh, I am really interested into going into electrical engineering!!! The school I want to go to has classes with like 55 boys and 5 girls. But That just encourages me to be one of the girls, break the stereotype! I am just afraid that it will be to hard for me... I really need to work for the grades I get now in school.

Hey! I'm going into electrical engineering in September and this is my biggest worry. I'm already use to it in my physics class being one of the three girls in the 20 person class but uni is going to be much larger. I love the fact that I can be one of the people who go against the stereotype, and I'm super passionate about engineering. I hope I can follow your lead and continue the female rep!

thestrawberryblast ... the reason why you don't see so many girls in engineering is because inherently most girls don't like that sort of thing. It's not that males don't want females working with them...in fact it's the total opposite!! But the fact remains that boys like "stuff" and girls like "people" ....in the most part!!! WHY....... The same reason why most girls melt at the sight of a baby and most boys shy away because they don't feel that bond!!! What is happening right now is that people are thinking that boys and girls are equal...and they are!!!!! But they are very very very different!!! I don't even know why I have to explain this because to me it's common sense.

I have one year before getting my degree in Civil Engineering ( environmental emphasis), and I can definitely say that over 80% of my classes have been predominantly male. However, I’ve found that I’ve only experienced sexism from professors rather than classmates. It’s really frustrating but it just motivates me to prove them wrong.

    • @m22pozos
      @m22pozos 6 лет назад +3

If you’re experiencing sexism by a professor, I would report them if it’s outright and obvious. Any kind of discrimination against a person, sexism, racism, etc. should be brought to the attention of the school. You deserve to sit in that class and learn just as much as anyone else. It’s ridiculous we still have to worry about this in 2019, almost 2020 at this point

I caaannntt even begin to count the amount of WOMEN who’ve discouraged me from doing Engineering, saying they ended up doing something completely different or just stayed at home after marriage. And don’t even get me started on the men all of whom have an opinion on what I should and shouldn’t be doing with MY life. And I have to admit at one point I was seriously considering switching majors thankfully my dad pushed me not to and here I am with 2 years to go graduating with a civil engineering degree. If you want to do engineering, and it’s something you feel passionate about don’t listen to anyone do what you want!

Marcene M heyyy umm I’d say honestly just do your best, read your material day by day don’t let it pile up because its a lot to comprehend a day before your exam lol trust me been there, not good. Also I’m definitely not a genius I don’t comprehend things on the fly like some students do, I have to sit and work to understand, solve lots and lots of questions just to get it. So if you’re like that than don’t worry about it all you have to do is practice and you’ll see that’s it actually not that bad. Anyways good luck and I hope you do great!

A.S Bernard thts the thing tho its the same here in the middle east. There are more females than males in all my engineering courses so that isnt the issue but somehow women don’t end up pursuing it as a full time career so they simply discourage others from going thru the trouble of getting the degree in the first place.

I'm a senior electrical engineering student and most of my classes are like 5 girls out of 60 for small classes or 15 out of 100 sometimes for larger classes lol. And yeah It is so true the field of engineering in general is hard. But I do want to broaden my field into business a bit. I'm currently selling items on poshmark and now I'm starting my RUclips channel. I also have three younger siblings and living with a single dad I pretty much help with pick up and drop off to school, cleaning, cooking, doctors appts, etc. So yeah it can be quite hard but there is always something you can do. Maybe you pull out an all nighter but then you can sleep later. Prioritize your time wisely. I feel like it's all about balance. I'm just starting on the buying/selling side so I'm no pro just giving my in take based off of my experience. All I know is that there's always someone there to help and something better you can do everyday. To all my girls out there, I may not be the smartest girl you'll ever meet and yet I'm still in the field. Haven't failed any classes yet. I dont have a great GPA but I'm still graduating next semester. So hey! Don't sell yourself short! If I can do it, trust me, you can too!

Giiiiiiirl! I'm a Mechanical Engineer and I was only 1 out of 4 women in a class full of males. Being a woman in a male-dominated field wasn't and isn't intimidating, but you're right about the not having anyone to mentor you. That was and still is the hard part, so not seeing many woman engineers gets disheartening. I think the worst part of it all--outside of the studying and having to manage your time well-- is when guys assume that I don't know much or they won't listen to my input or they treat me differently then they do each other. But, if I can do it and you can as well, then there is NOTHING that should stop any girls and women from becoming engineers! And congratulations on graduating and landing the dream job. :)

I'm a mechanical and plastic engineer and it makes me so happy seeing other girls go into the field and recommend other to do so. It is so refreshing see other push younger generations into the STEM fields. Being in mechanical I am usually the only girl or one of two and I have never had the issue of male classmates being rude. BUT, I have had the issue of male professors talking down to me and acting like I know nothing. Being a girl in a male dominated major can have its downfalls but honestly you just have to have a thick skin and prove them wrong. It took two years for my one professor to finally acknowledge that I am actually intelligent and not to talk down to me. Plastic engineering on the other hand I did have about 15% girls in my classes so it was a lot better with professors treating everyone fairly.

Good point there about the breakdown of women in stem, a lot of women who go through and make it all the way to college without being turned from STEM still end up in areas that are STEM based but more in biology, teacher or healthcare research and not physics or engineering. I personally was pushed into teaching science when i said liked maths and physics. I wasn't even told what engineering was. I respect those women who go into bio, teaching, or med but I think it is important that we stop the stereotype that when a girl says she is interested in science its not just bio.

I'm 44 years old now ... much past my study days, but I have experienced what many of the ladies say hereunder. In a class of around 71 people, there were only 4 ladies ... and that included myself. But slowly, you come to realize that understanding what you're doing and hard work pays off. Engineering is about thinking hard on problems ... something females can do just as much as males. To all the ladies out there studying for their degree ... take heart and keep going. It's tough, but if you are determined, you will succeed.

I was always into building and designing stuff since I was a kid (I made a soap holder out of toy parts when I was 5 and it was in use for about 14 years in my house until it broke lol). I also excelled in maths and science in secondary school, therefore mech engineering became my dream career when I was a teen. Surprisingly the people closest to me are the one who dragged me down and were like “you are a girl, you should know your place, shame on you for insinuating you can do a men’s job”. My physics teacher was like “i have no doubt you can get a first class in university..... but XYZ because you are a girl”. My uncle, who is an engineer, always put down women in engineering and made me feel so stupid no matter what I did or said. The women were no better either, always staying silent and hypocritical. I was so discouraged and depressed that I actually went for a commerce degree but into my first semester I was like NOPE. I cant do something I hate just because of what people say. I dropped out and got myself a full scholarship in a small engineering university abroad and everything is soooo good now. My first year gpa is 91%, I am second in my class right now, my professors respesct and appreciate me so much, there is little to no sexism at all. Im so glad I didnt listen to those assholes and followed my passion

Congrats! You did did!🎉 Your story is truly inspiring! As a girl, I’m a little bit afraid of going to STEM because there are so many stupid prejudices about women in engineering, but I must resist my temptation to give up, because I know engendering is what I really want to do!

I hadn't make it to the second year of computer science and I cry every time when I think about this...
But CS wasn't my passion, I just wanted to have a challenging and prestigous job. My passion has always been history and now I know 100% I want to be a historian or researcher. Still, I wish more girls would go to STEM. I usually don't mention to people that I used to study CS because I don't want to enforce the stereotype thet it's "not for women". Other 3 girls from my group made it and I am so happy with their success - I can always point at them when I hear sexist opinions on CS!

Hey I'm starting university in a few months and I've been a little hesitant with choosing computing classes that I want to take because I'm a little worried about how I would be treated by the guys. I'm currently on the e-sports team and the only girl in my region to compete. I'm also super girly and enjoy fashion. I get comments especially from the younger guys about competing and I'm a little worried that kind of stuff will be carried on into the classes I want to take in university. This video is helping me see that even though it will be hard sometimes to push through and explore the things I want to do. Thank you 💕

Ayee! I am doing Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and we have like less than 10 girls out of 90 students. Gender statistics DO NOT define your choice of degree! I learnt interesting things in my degree and no way am I stopping it either. And Natalie I definitely would wanna be role model too especially in countries like South East Asia where it's still a HUGE stereotype! Any advice on influencing or rather try to broaden people's perspective?

I’m in my first year of Aeronautical Engineering and there are 96 people on my course. 6 of us are female. Lecturers rarely ask us questions. A lot of the other male students are shocked when you do something well. When we had our first maths lecture, we have a female lecturer and the first comment which came out of someone’s mouth was “you’re an engineer?”. Let’s be real. It’s a sexist field a lot of the time.

I actually found your RUclips channel from one of your engineering videos you posted about a year ago and you’ve been a role model for me since then!!! I’ve always been such an advocate for women to join engineering fields, no one should be discouraged to join engineering because of men. WOMEN ARE AMAZING. I’m going to college this fall to major in electrical engineering, but after hearing you talk about industrial engineering I might have to change it. Do you believe that with an electrical engineering degree ultimately I could become an entrepreneur?

Girls don't "need" to go into STEM. They need to study whatever they are interested in and good at that is also in demand. If it's STEM, no one should discourage you. But it's stupid to choose your career to fulfill someone else's imagined need for equity.

I am a high school student and involved in lots of STEM projects and competitions. When I am in my FTC team traveling elsewhere for competitions, I had to get a girl with me just for accompany bc our school demand every team member to live with someone in the hotel and I was sadly the only girl in our FTC team. When male has the more participation in some area, female don’t get understanding and taking care of for its general needs.

Hey! I would like to share my own personal opinion from a girl in her last year of Industrial Engineering.
I was never discriminated during my 3 years here in front of me. I have a role model at home which is my mum who encouraged me to do whatever I wanted. Although, I think the article you read is SO SO true. My professors at college spend from 8 am to 8pm at college, in lectures, particular appointments with students or investigation. Here in Spain doctors investigate during their permanency in college if they want. That time extra is not spent at home with children, with leads to the non-flexibility job for women. And this is an example, outside college I met women that have the same issue.
I think your video is amazing, and you should call this situacion by its name, is female sexism.
There is the stereotype that women are raised to stay at home, taking care of children and every women should be feminine. This issue is decreasing but still nowadays blows up in cases like these. This is sexism, and we, women at engineering need to be the example to break the rules.
We need families like yours rasing their childs without gender roles, and letting them do wathever they want in their life. Women encouraging other women, that's being a feminist. Being feminist is controversial, but being a feminist engineering is challenging.

As a guy who loves stem ever since I was little I can tell you I was kept away from it ever since I was little, things like stem is heavily promoted to girls in schools, there are many organizations trying to inspire girls to get into it but stem is boring, dangerous, and a small mistake can make the whole thing fall apart, not work, or exploitable.
    It involves math,
not colors, pictures, painting, fashion, styles, people relationships
It involves siting in a chair, White Walls, grey floors, ceilings, PC screens that look like those from the 1980s, no talking for 8 hours or more.
It's great to have girls in stem, more things need to be invented, and sooner and faster. But girls shouldn't go into it if it's hip, you should go into it if you are passionate about it, and you know if a girl is passionate if her bedroom has a soldering station with dismantled PCBs, you don't need a role model, no boy had a role model when it comes to stem, only an interest that grows into a passion, if you need a role model before going for anything, well you won't get into anything.
No gender stereotyping, it's a job that will dry out your hands, it will make you lose sleep, it will smell like gasoline, smoke, WD-40, stress, hot liquid metal. Exploded batteries or outlets, or heavy cars. It's not a social activity
Point is girls, it's not a powerment thing, it's an interest, something you enjoy doing, a hobby or career, basically ask yourself, am I happy spending 10 hours a day X number of days a week alone? With tools, soldering irons or a keyboard, or would I rather work with kids? Work in a hospital? Rather cook? Paint? Photography, news, manage people? Help save lives or plants? Post online why you don't want to work in stem, or do, or looking for collaboration.
What ever you do, appreciate the men who do go into stem, the men who built your car, cities, the men who not only gave decades of their lives away from more comfortable, easy and fun jobs, but away from families, friends and people. Men who got severely hurt but died in those jobs, men and boys.
And it can not go unsaid that women too worked and work in factories, lost their limbs and lives, they asked nor expect no more praise than the men who worked did. For them it was a job that needed to get done, no yay women , no yay men, no just a job, if there is any yay anything it's yay for humanity and the amazing things they made for all of us to share. Don't encourage girls to go into stem, but provide the opportunity for all children to discover stem and for those with an interest provide for them the things they need to grow in it. For I did not get that, and I spent the rest of my wishing I did.

I'm studying engineering in France and I learned that I am accepted at the engineering school of my dreams yesterday. I do not regret chosing this major but I must admit that I would have regreted listening to some people 3 years ago telling me I should chose a more "future-mom-and wife-appropriate" job and major.
