I live in the southern tier of NY state not too far from the town as the crow flies. There was a lot of wicked weather and all sorts of alerts from central NY state, southern NY state and into PA. We got walloped at home, damaging high winds. God rest their souls and may their family be wrapped in the wings of the angels for comfort.😢
There is no way I would get in a vehicle with some 30 year old that is pumped up with alcohol or drugs. Deadly accidents of that sort happen way more often.
I prefer an older, more experienced pilot. Did they say he had dementia or crippling arthritis? Did they say it was pilot error? You assume way too much!
And if the crash was a result of an unrecoverable mechanical issue? Also, if this man was never a professional airline pilot your take does not apply. But I do understand your issue with the elderly.
They were at the baseball camps in Cooperstown and flew out of Oneonta , My family lives 10 minutes from the Oneonta airport and they're private planes flying in and out of Oneonta during the summer because Cooperstown is just 10 miles from the airport.@rileycowan3969
Yes, the reason is because in both cases those men and women have tens of thousands of lives at stake. If the FAA felt there was a need to place an age limit on private pilots they would have done it long ago. They are also required to have their health status checked medically every 2 years at that age. Now, let's say for a moment that the pilot was a 19 year punk. What's the excuse THERE?
My uncle met them at the tournament they were returning from. that boy was an amazing baseball player, according to him. Even though the boy was from another team, my heart hurts horribly.
As an experienced airline pilot I don’t want to jump to conclusions. Anything could have happened. But a 76 yr old should not be behind the controls of an aircraft big or small. There is a reason we airline pilots step down at age 65. I would NOT put my family in a small aircraft flown by an inexperienced privet pilot or a older gentleman. We as individuals should know when to step down and not take this responsibility anymore. Terrible tragedy. Rest in piece. Same goes for driving cars. There is a moment when it’s time to simply stop operating vehicles as age is getting ahead of us.

Flying is so great and changes one’s lifestyle however it has a risk like this. Flying is an extremely intolerant and demanding discipline where even a small mistake can easily lead to a point of no return in a matter of seconds.

Almost all plane crashes are the result of pilot error. Only rarely are they the result mechanical defects. And age is a major factor. Dude should never have had his family aboard.

There’s a reason commercial airlines have a 65 year old retirement age and two pilots in the cockpit.
Depending on the plane model: some are single pilot certified, others dual. In commercial planes they require 2 due to the airframe.

New York and planes just don't go well together..
Some of these small planes now have parachutes, just wondering if this was an option for them.
Only a few manufacturers equip their aircraft with full-airframe parachutes. This Piper Malibu was not one of them.
