There is a 4th mode: Camera Raw > Effects > Grain. Less flexible of Blur Gallery but still useful and fast.

The first method sounds ideal but I have gone to blur gallery and field blur and dont have those three tabs inc the all important noise. CS6. so where are these options ? You dont say what version of photoshop you are using.

When I choose Field Blur, pop up window says "Could not complete the Field Blur command because the initial bounding rectangle is empty."
I have to duplicate the photo layer (so that it is not a background), then choose filed blur
What should I do in order to do it in your way?

I have a few issues with Method 1 Blur Gallery. 1) It made the file so large it couldn't save it 2) The Preview of it didnt look the same as the final version of it. Any help anyone please?
