Michael Keaton's original last name actually was Douglas, he changed it when he became an actor because there was already an actor named Michael Douglas. So you're technically correct on accident.

      Also, Michael "Wall Street" Douglas
      didn't go by "Mike Douglas"
because, at the time he started
his career, there was a talk/variety
      show host with that name.
For a sample, it's helpful to watch
      1981's "Incredible Shrinking Woman".

And he couldn't go by his middle name, Jackson, because there was already a Michael Jackson on the scene.

Man, great 50! It's evident we grew up in the same generation watching these gems. Great call on giving Bedazzled the spotlight, and the scene from Dirty Work with Chris Farley at the jukebox I had forgotten about, had me laughing my ass off. All in all, thank you for this! Was surprised to not see Superbad though! Take care man.

Been watching through top 50 lists, I've done the horror, just finished this one and just about to start the action. But it's a breath of fresh air to actually watch lists that aren't saturated with the same paint by numbers 'best' movies over and over. The fact these are your own honest preferences already makes the lists so much more refreshing.
Also you're the first person I have seen that's ever highlighted Tommy Boy, Multiplicity, Girl Next Door as well as Stir Of Echoes and Frailty on your horror list, automatically makes you one of my favourite people on RUclips as these are all highly underrated movies that 'nobody' talks about, that I absolutely love. So keep up the good work 👍

Great list as usual - did not expect your #1 choice, but was very glad to see it there. Looking forward to your other genre rankings, as well as of course your best-of-all time list.
Plenty of overlap between my favorites and yours, but plenty of disagreement too, chiefly when it comes to the slob/gross-out comedies of the 1990s & early 2000s - while I do like Jim Carrey (including the films of his you mentioned), I have much less patience for Adam Sandler and even less for Pauly Shore and Chris Farley. Same goes for stuff like Tomcats, American Pie and Joe Dirt. The 1990s were a great decade for many kinds of movies, but not for studio comedies (Judd Apatow did a good job of reviving them, though - more on that in a bit). One film from that era that I do like very much is Down Periscope, which is probably the only good movie Rob Schneider was ever in; loved it when I was a kid, and even now that I’m a submariner myself I still love it, which should count for something. Another great 1990s comedy is Ed Wood, my favorite Tim Burton movie (The Disaster Artist, a very similar film from more recent years, is pretty good too).
As for Apatow, I’m also a big fan and would put Forgetting Sarah Marshall way up on a list like this; another late-2000s comedy (this one made by Ben Stiller) that would definitely make the cut is Tropic Thunder. The original Hangover, Ted, Galaxy Quest & The Way Way Back would also make my list (and I’m not even a Star Trek fan!). I finally got around to watching The Way, Way Back after seeing it so high on your end-of-decade list; once again, I must thank you for a terrific recommendation.
As for other comedies I love, I’ll start by going way back; if silent movies can make a list like this, then Chaplin’s City Lights would certainly qualify (probably in my top ten, if not top five), as well as Keaton’s The General (still one of the great action-comedies).
Moving into the sound era, Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera (two Marx brothers movies) deserve a mention, as well as a few films by Ernst Lubitsch & Preston Sturges (particularly To Be or Not to Be and Unfaithfully Yours; both got remade in the 1980s, but stick with the 1940s originals).
Billy Wilder is, without question, my favorite director of the Classic Hollywood period, and he made some great movies in many genres, including some of the very best comedies of all time; Some Like It Hot, The Apartment & One, Two, Three would all rank very high on a Top 50 list, with The Apartment being my choice for the best (though not the funniest) comedy of all time, as well as the best Christmas movie of all time; watching this is an annual tradition for me. Keeping with that theme, Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story would also make the list.
If musical comedies can qualify, then there are a few great ones from the 1940s & 1950s, such as Meet Me in St. Louis, The Band Wagon (both by Vincente Minnelli) and Singin' in the Rain.
Moving across the ocean for a moment, I also really like the Ealing comedies of the 1940s & 1950s; the favorite of most people is Kind Hearts & Coronets, which is very good, but I’ve always loved The Ladykillers more. I’m All Right Jack, made by the Boulting brothers around the same time, is excellent too - the humor is a bit broader than in the Ealing movies, as you might expect from people like Ian Carmichael, Margaret Rutherford & Peter Sellers being in the cast, but it’s still very funny.
Not as many comedies from the 1960s & 1970s would make the list, since there was more of a tendency during those years for comedies (and movies in general) to keep up with the latest stylistic, political & social trends, which, while it might help them when they first come out, will also make them age faster & worse. Still, there are some good ones - the two Redford-Newman pairings (Butch Cassidy and The Sting) deserve a mention, with the card game between Newman & Robert Shaw in The Sting being one of the funniest single scenes in any movie I’ve watched. Monty Python’s Life of Brian would also make the list, though not The Holy Grail. Elaine May’s A New Leaf is very funny too; it’s a shame that she’s better-remembered now for making Ishtar.
Woody Allen has made plenty of movies that would qualify for a list like this; although he’s been running on fumes for a couple decades now, we still get a really good one every few years, while in his heyday of the late 1970s through the early 1990s, there was a terrific one every year or two. The very best movies he made would be better classified as comedy-dramas, but that’s no reason to keep them off here; my favorites of his would be Hannah & Her Sisters, Manhattan, Crimes & Misdemeanors and Radio Days, with maybe a half-dozen more that would at least be in contention for the top fifty, if not actually being on the list.
That takes me into the 1980s, I guess; plenty of agreement here with you, including Fast Times - written by Cameron Crowe and directed by Amy Heckerling, each of whom made another favorite comedy of mine (Almost Famous and Clueless).
Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy, while it's a very tension-filled movie, should qualify as a comedy and would also make this list, as would The Wolf of Wall Street (what is it but a more comedic version of Goodfellas?). A lot of people love After Hours and would put it here, but I'm afraid I do not.
I am, however, a big fan of Risky Business; I prefer it to The Girl Next Door, but if you saw the latter film first I can see why you might like it more. Same goes for Mrs. Doubtfire, which I saw after watching Some Like It Hot (which I already mentioned) and Tootsie, so I don't love it as much as you do.
Agreed on Planes, Trains & Automobiles being my favorite John Hughes movie; haven’t seen Dutch, but I’ll check it out.
As I said above, I wouldn’t have predicted Midnight Run to be your #1, but I’m very glad it made it on here; Beverly Hills Cop (also made by Martin Brest), is the better-remembered movie nowadays, but I’m with you on which is the better film. It got a lot of comparisons to Planes, Trains, etc. when it came out (the two movies are only a year apart), and I also agree that this is the better of those two.
Having said all that, Midnight Run isn’t even my favorite comedy of 1988: that honor goes to A Fish Called Wanda, which gets my vote as the funniest movie I’ve seen, period. It’s rare that I have to pause a movie because I’m in pain from laughing so hard, but it happened when watching this; it also happened when watching The Big Lebowski, which is the funniest (though not necessarily the best) Coen brothers comedy.
Getting into the Coens, they’re probably my favorite still-working filmmakers; not all of their movies have been great, but they’ve all been at least worth a watch, which is a pretty impressive track record; other comedies of theirs that would make a list like this would be Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou, A Serious Man & True Grit (the latter might raise some eyebrows, but it should qualify as a comedy as well as a Western or action movie); A Serious Man would be the best of these, though I know a lot of people hate it.
Another great comedic filmmaker is Alexander Payne, who also has a near-perfect track record; Sideways is his best (as well as funniest), but Election, About Schmidt and Nebraska deserve mentions too.
David O. Russell would have a couple entries as well, with American Hustle being my favorite and Three Kings being a contender for the top fifty
Looking more into crime comedies than pure, full-out comedies, then all three of Martin McDonagh’s movies - In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths & Three Billboards - would certainly make the list, as would Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, which is my favorite of his films (another big disagreement we have!), would also rate a mention.
Moving back a just a few years for a moment, Richard Linklater’s Dazed & Confused would also make my list, and Everybody Wants Some! is pretty good too. Keeping on with ‘nostalgia-trips-to-youth’ types of comedies, George Lucas’ American Graffiti and Barry Levinson’s Diner would also make the list.
Wag the Dog - also by Barry Levinson, and my favorite political satire of all time (never could get into Strangelove) - would also make the cut quite easily. In that same vein, two movies by Armando Iannucci - In the Loop and The Death of Stalin - deserve a mention as well.
Finally, if animated films qualify, then there are quite a few Pixar movies that would make the list (Toy Story 3 and Inside Out being my favorites, as well as Ratatouille and The Incredibles); the South Park film would also definitely make an appearance, as it comes from my all-time favorite TV show (and not just among comedies).
Not sure how many titles I’ve actually dropped here, but it’s at least a good start for a top fifty - either to build on or to pare back.
If you’ve just skipped to the bottom (can certainly understand if you have, though bless you if you’ve actually read all the way down here), then the two films I’d recommend most if you haven’t seen them would be A Fish Called Wanda (my pick for all-time funniest comedy) and The Apartment (my choice for all-time all-round best comedy); seeing the latter film at Christmas or New Year’s might be a good idea, as that’s when it takes place.
Hope you and your family are well, that you have a great Christmas, and that the new year is good to you. Cheers Sir.

Can I just say that I loved seeing Bedazzled, Encino Man, K-9 getting some love here!
American Pie was THE movie of my teenage years. If Scream was the horror movie that defined my teenage years, American Pie was the teen comedy. I just watched it recently, maybe a month ago, and I STILL laugh.
Wedding Crashers...I laughed so hard all the way through that one and its where I gained and appreciation for Vince Vaughan.
SO much yes for My Cousin Vinny and I was thrilled to see Tommy Boy make your top five because I will stop and watch that ANY time it comes on.
You included SO many of mine, but a few I would add...Tropic Thunder, Role Models, Ski Patrol ( If you haven't seen it give it a chance. Paul Fieg, before he got involved in directing, stars in it with Leslie Jordan, Martin Mull, and Ray Wilson (Mr. Hand). Its a LOT of fun. I think you would enjoy it for what it is. Came out in the early 90s so its that era of stupid comedy. ) Noises Off (The cast is SPECTACULAR in this), and Due Date.

Enjoyed the list. Some of them I hadn’t heard of but will probably check them out sometime. The Dream Team and Taking Care of Business are another couple of movies I loved but aren’t talked about much.

The one line you used to feature #48 here is pretty much the one I quote most from that movie to this day.

Great list. We seem to have a lot in common with our comedy movies. If you havent seen it (I'm sure you have). Check out See No Evil, Hear No Evil staring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. Just outrageous.

I know a lot of people don't like to sit through long videos which is understandable but I would think everyone that follows and subscribes would be an avid movie fan and would want to see a full on movie list of favorites. I can't even narrow it down to just 50. I would have to do a top 100 because there's just too many great films out there that narrowing it down to just 50 seems heartbreaking to leave films off the list and what I would do is just break it up into two parts where you have the top 51-100 & then the top 50 with a quick recap of the top 100 in the first video. That's just me though.
I appreciate that you give the underappreciated underrated films so much love because I'm the same way and a majority of these films I've seen and also love. A lot of them would make my top 100. Top 50 would be a lot harder and a bit different but a good amount of these would be in my top 100 for sure.
One film I'm really surprised to not see on your list because it's right up your alley is The Last American Virgin. It's very possible that you don't know about this one or never seen it and if that's the case you definitely need to check it out. It's one of those old 80s underrated underappreciated overlooked lost comedies that is definitely one of the best of the bunch and still holds up. It's full on 80s but that's part of its appeal. Basically if Fast Times At Ridgemont High, There's Something About Mary and American Pie had a baby this film would be their creation and considering it came before all of them you could say none of those films would exist without The Last American Virgin. I was very thankful and blessed to have found out about it at a very young age thanks to my dad. It's on blu ray. It's in my collection and it has one of the most unexpected and realistic endings not just of a comedy but of a movie and it really doesn't give you a cookie cutter type of story. It's very grounded and realistic while also being raunchy, hilarious, tackling several different issues and things teenagers go through and it shows you all the ups and downs. It's such a great film and the fact it came out in the 80s and tells such a compelling story with a lot of heart and emotion while also balancing the comedy and raunchiness is a testament to how rare this film is and I definitely think you should check it out. I think you will be thoroughly surprised that you may have never heard about it or watched it until now. If you see this comment and finally do decide to watch it, send me a comment here and then do a review on it.
