I love that you are so positive in your advice and the fact that you are not judging people who make mistakes.....you include the fact always that even you have made errors......we are in this together
I felt so down when we had to use our emergency fund to cover a surgery that wasn't expected. I know that the emergency fund is for that, but it still felt like I let us down by getting sick and I blamed myself even when my doctor said that I could not have done a thing to prevent it. It also took us about a year to get good at budgeting. we kept using our debit card at first, weren't on the same page, and felt as if we deserved things. We had to learn to have some spending money for each of us and it took a while to figure out how much that was. I keep wanting to save up money for a vacation or something when we are getting out of debt. We actually just took what we had saved for our fifth year anniversary and threw it at debt and paid one of them off. We won't get into debt again! It is also hard when the main water pipe to the house broke and we had to use our emergency fund again, when the car broke, and how we have a broken car in our driveway that we are still paying on the loan while I drive my in law's spare car. It is hard, but we are learning. We read proverbs, listen to shows like this and Dave Ramsey, and read books. God is gracious in making one of us strong when the other is down. Thanks for your videos! They really help.
Heck, we’re debt free and still make mistakes here and there. It’s been 3 years and three months since we began our debt free journey. We became debt free 2 years, 3 months and 18 days within the journey paying off $98k in consumer debt. We were in the midst of saving our 6 months emergency fund when we strayed a little. 😉We had been disciplined for so long that we kind of relaxed for a few months and found ourselves not contributing to the fund. But we regrouped and we are finally done with emergency fund and we are starting to pay off the house this month.🎉❤️ I could not agree with you more, when you stumble, allow for a little grace and get back at it. The “I deserve” mentality is a very dangerous pitfall and in a world full of instant gratification, I’m glad you pointed that out. For us refocusing on our “why’s was key to getting back on track. I like your content very much.
Sticking to my budget and not buying stuff because "I deserve it" are the two pitfalls I'm struggling with right now. Congratulations on the amazing successes you've had!
My family very recently started our debt free journey and sinking funds. The best feeling ever was my car needed a cheap repair $45 and I didn't have to stress. I had the cash already set aside for car repairs. Such a little thing but it has helped so much with my anxiety.
Dana , would you please please post your excel sheet on your blog or something???? PLEASE I have tried to recreate it and i cant get it to work for me!
Anxiety can take a lot out of me, but one of the things I'm grateful for is that anxiety makes me a fantastic natural saver. Having a solid emergency fund and planning (b/c loss of control = anxiety) for expenses makes me feel so much better.
I'm glad you explained that it takes up to a year to create a good budget, because I didn't understand why I kept busting the budget ! Thank you very much !!!!
As a single Mother I got caught in the credit card trap and thinking I too needed to buy things for my kids. I finally stopped when I could not get a job and it all came crashing down. I am living in my RV as inexpensive as possible and now living within my means. And some extra to put away in a savings for the first time in my life. Women are normally paid less as well. You have great advise - I really enjoy your channel
I'm not a shopper other than groceries, sticking to some of the necessary organic and gluten-free items, but I sometimes eat out cuzz I'm too tired to fix something. Eating out means I get nurtured having someone prepare something for me, and being around others is important since I live alone. So in 2019, hope to cut back on eateries. Thank you, Dana.
Pitfall: Not budgeting with my fiance's sanity in mind. I tend to be a notch more extreme than him. Now, our budgeting is flawless, 6 months later. Success: Sinking funds paid for our $4,600 car (80,000 miles and mint condition). My fiance gets paid $18/hr, so this was a huge financial accomplishment!
Dana, how timely is this video! We have just started our journey to living debt free and your comments are so practical! We have huge debt and I have been learning how to use the zero based budget and feeling a little discouraged with baby step 1. We have the emergency fund all set up and a "Murphy" just reared its ugly head it's going to completely deplete the fund! At least the money is saved and we won't have to put it on the credit card. I was so looking forward to attacking the smallest debt. Anyway, your comment about push-back really encouraged us. Back to the 'building.' Keep those encouraging videos coming!
Yeah, "good on ya!", Dana. Pitfall(s) WILL happen. The important thing is to not quit. = 2 steps forward, one step back is still, in the long run, FORWARD motion....
This is our first year. We're really struggling with whether or not my husband school keep pursuing the PSLF loan forgiveness program. He really loves his not for profit job and he's helping high risk youth, but the pay is low. Plus, we're afraid that the PSLF won't even be a thing by the time his ten years of service are up :/
This is our first month of budgeting and paying down our debt!!! I'm trying to learn why we got into debt and what my relationship is with money. It's very difficult for me to be in the moment of each financial situation. I get very caught up in next week, next month and next year. I know we will get there😊 Thank you for the great resource of your channel.
Kim McMurry me too! This will be our first month as well. It's a little nerve wracking heading into the unknown because if we don't succeed at this, there's really no hope in paying our debt down or budgeting future expenses! But regardless I am still excited to get this going. . .Best wishes on your journey😃
Merrideth Hawk There is a learning curve, like with anything you haven't done before. The more you do it the better you get at it. I'm using grace and contentment to get me thru these early days💕 Best of luck to you too😊
Love your advice and channel. Budgeting by not picking up new debt is sound advice. It's always something. It's like one step forward two steps back. It's nice to see the debt numbers go down. That is my motivation...
Dana I so lived your honesty and transparency in this video.Touching both on the time it takes, the I deserve it fallacy and how something always turns up to test your resolve whenever you try to make changes for the good.Best video you've ever done in my opinion ..thanks
Very good video… my pitfall is saving the 1000$. I’m trying to save but emergencies happen. I had to service my brakes on my car. Instead of paying a lot I did the job myself and I saved a ton of money. It still took from my emergency fund but I was glad I had the money in cash. So yeah I did pay off my credit card debt with a smaller emergency fund. I kept to my budget so far. I’ve said no to all my friends who wanna hang out. I keep saying my friends don’t pay my debt. Overall it’s patience and it will get done this is just a phase. thanks for uour video
Hi Dana, I love your videos and try to watch a few at a time! I’m not sure if you have one where you list some of your favorite money/budget podcasts? Could you recommend some for listening to in the car? Thank you so much:)
Snips&Snails my kids get 20 a month plus a cellphone but they want to do band and other activities in school and with 3 of them it can get expensive. We rarely eat out and our forms of entertainment are the internet and video games (for the kids) and movies. I have tried to pay down my debt but something always seems to happen and I have to use my credit cards to fix something or purchase something. I just can't seem to manage my money right I guess? My clothes are resale clothes or given to me. My kids get new. I have to eat a certain diet as I have food allergies. Any suggestions?
Debt Free Dana ツ well I'm sure you will raise them to understand the importance of saving and budgeting. I didn't know to do that when mine were little. Noone ever taught me how to budget money. I still struggle with saving a dime 😊
+Melissa Alder I'm from a band/theater/choir extracurricular oriented family and I remember how expensive it could be. Reach out to booster organizations for fundraising opportunities (particularly those where the students can work themselves) and see if there are any scholarships or fee assistance programs in the area. Maybe a local Kiwanis or Rotary Club? Just recently I learned about a program where the state university in our city will pay people (12 or 14 yo +) to be timers at swim meets. We also had the option to work at a concession stand (SODEXO managed them) for the university, professional sports arenas and even the zoo. The band would get so much money for providing the workers then the band decided so much would go directly into the student account of the people who worked vs. the general account. We also used to have a program through Shop With Scrip where you could buy gift cards and a percentage would go back to the student account. My mom fully funded our band accounts this way ($800 fees before trips) - she'd get grocery store gift cards (ie. something she knew we would actually NEED) every month which was a lot for a family of 6. Scrips might be a good option for you (if you can get it going and is available in your area) because then your grocery budget is set - you have so much on gift cards and that's it until next month's order of gift cards arrives. Good luck!
HAlC11235 Thank you for the suggestions I will check into it. My son actually volunteers to help do stuff at the school so maybe they can tell us if there are any programs like that? We're a family of 5 and I have to eat a special way due to an allergy to MSG and other food additives such as nitrites and nitrates. I hate having to be so picky but I need to steer clear of foods with that in it. If I eat alot of it my heart races and acts up. I look for clean meat when it has clearanced stickers on it and I usually avoid bacon unless I need it for a special meal. I buy certain things organic and other things I just scrub really well, plus we have a garden. I shop at Aldis, Costco (sometimes) and Walmart, which I hate. My husband and children will eat whatever they don't care if its clean or healthy. It's just really hard to pay down our credit cards and get out of debt, something always happens and we have to use them because it's usually a big purchase. I feel like we're in a hole and diggin to get out except we're sinkin farther down instead of climbing out.
I got baby step 1 done, and I paid off my first credit card. So I feel pretty good. I figure if I could still pick up overtime at work, I should be out of debt in less than 2 years.
i have a lot of pitfalls!!! i need to have some successes. first move i did was not to buy new clothes or shoes or bags or any accessories for that matter. i don't have a budget so, that is what i need to work on. lols! I am such a poor example of an adult. :( and I need to remove that "i deserve attitude" yeah entitlement is one of my biggest pitfall.
Staying on budget and not buying food at the convience store are both hard for me. It is also easy to convince myself to use a credit card because I get rewards.
Really loved this. sticking to our budget is a challenge. its taken me over a year to get an idea of what are expenses are. Unfortunately we've had to deal with some very tight months of one income. And a little surprise of baby 2 on the way. So will have another drop income but hopefully other sources will pick up by then.
I LOVE your videos! They're so inspirational and helpful. I've been following Dave Ramsey for a while and I'm really just now getting serious about it. You're so right, persistence is key. And life happens, so not quitting when there's a set back is definitely the right idea. Thanks for sharing your journey!!
If we have quarterly or annual costs or something like that, we divide them by 12 and have that in a monthly budget, so we can see on average how much money we need every month. Long term expenses are set aside every month in that too. That way, if you look at the total and realize you don't actually make enough money, you can look seriously at what you can cut out.
Thank you for being so open and honest on your channel. I just recently found you and have been "bing" watching you. I have a question for you...I was wondering how long you have been on/or how long it took you and your husband to reach debt free. Thanks again for sharing!
I too have heard of Dave Ramsey's program and I am implementing some of his strategies, but honestly it was the Lord who turned it all around for me. He opened up my eyes to my situation and gave me a deep desire to get out of debt and to pay things off as soon as possible and to not inquire any new debt. I am actually a little backwards lol in my method though as I am trying to pay the debt off "before" I save up my 1000.00. Yes having that back up plan is great, but since I know this is of the Lord I am going the route He has set before me. By the spring of next year Lord willing all 3 of my credit cards, my loan and my car note will be paid of. Praise God!!! He is teaching me to be content with what I have been blessed with instead of wanting more and more and more. I never ever thought I would be in this position as I have maxed out my credit twice in my life time. It truly feels amazing to know that I will be coming out of this by next spring "hopefully" bc it is my desire to be able to help more people who are in need. It's so hard to be the hands and feet of Jesus if we can barely stay afloat ourselves. This is what He is teaching me in this process. I would love to be able to pull out a 100.00 bill for example and give to a struggling mom to buy food for her family etc.. To be able to do that and then to say you are doing it for them in the name of Jesus brings a little more peace I think back into the world and lets people know that there truly is a God in heaven that knows them and cares about them. To me that makes all the difference. I hope this blesses all who read it. Jesus is the way and creator of all things...even the universe lol. God bless you Dana and your family.
Love you channel and I am trying to caught up with all your videos. Funny thing is we don't have the word 'I deserve it' in our language. So when I watched the TV commercial of the western brand and it started to use this word with translation, at first it sounds very odd but later on I think I have absorbed this word.
Great video i just subscribed to your channels im atm trying to get out of Debt and save money as me im just starting out but I know your tips will help me on my way
I’m about 6 months into baby step 2, but I know I’ll need to buy a car likely by the end of the year. My family needs two cars with our work schedules and job duties, so going down to 1 car unfortunately isn’t an option. Do I save for a car as I continue my debt snowball to avoid taking out a loan at the end of the year or use money that I would have saved for the car to go towards debt and take out a loan at the end of the year?
hi Dana. I'm new to ur channel and I love it. I have a question for you. what hair clippers do it family use? I have a 2 years old and 7 month old. every time I take them to barber to cut their hair cut it's too pricey and we decided to do it our Own please help me
+Mercy Harris Hi! We use Wahl clippers. I filmed the first time we did it. We still use the same clippers in this video. ruclips.net/video/kRpsyl07kZA/видео.html
I am just to budget, right now my Bill's are greater than my means, so I am not allowing any I deserve it talk, eating as cheaply as possible, I miss my more expensive foods. I recently fell into , you receive all this amazing still for free, then to get the punch line, you can join this club for only a few dollars a month, and you have so many days that you can cancel. HA HA,,! You write it all down, and then tend to forget until your bank statement, happened and I am I shock and trying to figure out where this payment came FROM! 1. I NEVER RECEIVED THE 100.00 SHOPING I WAS PROMISED! Foles it's all a game to get you hooked into another monthy, bill for a product. I did not need in the first place. A LESSON LEARNED THE HARD WAY. I HOPE YOU LEARN FROM MINE.
You are making complete sense except for taking “I deserve it” out of your vocabulary. I see the point you are trying to make but I think a better way to explain it would have been to say do you need it or is it a luxury you could actually do without. We are all very deserving and we are worth it, whatever it is- it is a birthright to be able to love yourself enough and have enough confidence to be able to say “I am deserving.” I think that’s a dangerous thing to be teaching to people and especially children to think that they don’t deserve things- that’s a great way to program someone to NOT get the things they want In life because they feel they are not worthy of them.... like I said I see your point, but there are so many people doing years of healing work (if they are even lucky enough to be able to start their healing journey) to rewire their brain to think they are deserving and worth the happy life they truly desire. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
My entire family has an "I deserve it" mentality so I'm going to work on myself and hope it snowballs to my family members.
I love that you are so positive in your advice and the fact that you are not judging people who make mistakes.....you include the fact always that even you have made errors......we are in this together

+Angie Gold Yes! It's a indescribable feeling. That sense of security and peace when you know you have the money is incredible. 💕

+lambchop CONGRATS!!! 🎉 I need to get on that too honestly. Our cars are both over 100,000 miles.
I just love what you said about “I deserve it.”
The motivation is so important. I'm thankful that Dave Ramsey shares his podcast so I can listen whenever.
+Jendi P. Me too! So grateful they share all 3 hours every day for free.

You "deserve" this thumbs up. :)
Dana, this is REALLY good! I shared it on facebook. Thank you so much! :)
Thank you for te inspiration to push through!!!
Great video as usual!!! ❤
