Not to mention landing on the Moon exactly 2 months earlier that year.

They were huge and about to get bigger with the Cosmos Factory LP (that I must have played hundreds of times the next year), but "Commotion" was one of the last songs I'd want to hear while sitting in the gallery on American Bandstand. "Down on The Corner" and "Bad Moon Rising" came out not long after and before "Commotion" which was one of my least favorite CCR tunes.

@@jerrygil1965 That's when I started watching AB from the mid-1970s until 1984, when I graduated from high school. I enjoyed AB for the music but watched Soul Train for dancing.
I remember when VH-1 aired this (and your assessment is spot on...butchered, indeed!). This was not only a transitional period for AB but for much of music as well. That said, as Dancer Don correctly assessed, Dick Clark wisely made sure the show kept up with the times with the various set changes (this then-new set would be changed four years later and many more times before the show left ABC in 1987). CCR's appearance (their only one for AB) was part of a month-long series of featured acts - the Association and Stevie Wonder were each given their own special features and Dick continued this over the years (my favorite is when DC did one for Michael Jackson in the summer of 1972).

Aaron, thx so much for putting this episode up! It puts things more into perspective, as I remember telling you I missed seeing this when VH1 had their AB marathon. Not much I can add to the comments I made from the separate clips you uploaded from this episode, except that this is the first time I saw Dick open the show with a performance from the guest! I guess he was feeling the changes with the new set, new theme song, new logo. This was a really cool episode & makes me wonder what VH1 edited out in order to make this a half hour episode. Besides CCR, the music is so eclectic here. That Top 10 is quite interesting, considering it covered almost all the hit genres of the time. I did notice the room wasn't as packed as it usually was, but I know that soon changed when 1970 came in & the changes started to settle & make more sense. Great upload Aaron. Now I'm gonna go & look at the partial color Top 10 clip you put up from this episode. Lol
@@AmericanBandstandAgain Andrew, you are a godsend! Be sure to use the color snippets Aaron used in his Top 10 clip from this episode as a color guide!
Yes, the Top 40 Pop chart *was* eclectic and for that reason listening to the radio in those days was great. Without turning the dial, you got pop, rock (hard rock, acid rock), Motown, vocal music (such as Tom Jones, in the Top Ten that week), instrumental ("Theme from Romeo and Juliet"), bubble-gum (the Archies, the Cuff-Links), a little Gospel (Edwin Hawkins Singers), even a little reggae (Desmond Dekker), Beatles and Stones, and other consistent hit-makers like CCR, the Guess Who, and 3 Dog Night. Good music was everywhere.
@@thruthealcove I wish I could say I could pick the colors but I can't. Its done with AI technology and totally independant of my input. Its not bad overall, but also depends on the quality of the clip itself. It just wont turn out as good as one would like, but it turns out decent most of the time. Since we all see in color, its always more pleasing to the eye. I can also make limited improvements to the quality of the detail.
@@AmericanBandstandAgain Yes, you're right about it being pleasing to the eye, even if the colors aren't accurate. I still appreciate it no matter what!
Creedence was hot on both AM Top-40 and FM. Both sides of most of their 45s hit the U.S. charts. Then there were their great album cuts, like Ray Charles' "Night Time Is The Right Time", off the Green River album. ruclips.net/video/AW1KKYaqrnk/видео.html
A color version of this survives I think. There's a clip of Dick interviewing CCR in color and you showed old clips of this episode from the 40tj Anniversary special. I don't know if the tape of this episode is degraded or damaged. But it isn't easy to find VTRs that can play a 2" quad tape if it does.
@@jerrygil1965 The people who danced on the AB show and those who watched it represented the beginning of the end of the counterculture, they were not freaks, even if some of them did take acid!
I had just started reading Billboard about this time (heard about it on the "Music Scene" program with David Stenberg) and that became my Bible. Great upload Aaron! Thanks!
Desde santo domingo República Dominicana me gusta esto. Pero más me gustaría saber cuáles están vivos que lo publiquen porque habrá muchos fallecidos ya gracias
Somehow the music today rhyming rapping vulgarity scary lyrics, tattoos covering entire body people wearing suits with sneakers, what happened to the class of our country? It’s lost in the 60s my friends, God help us all!!!!
Ironic that after DIY colorized clips we get a b&w color-era episode from vh1 which had provided episodes in pristine color. I love "Love American Style", my 8th-grade classmates and I thought that was a cool show. Bummer they didn't get to dance to "Lay Lady Lay" lol. Happy birthday Don, is that shot of him in the spotlight dance the one that Andrew Haberman used to colorize? Unusual we had 2 couples in the spotlight instead of 3.
I'm not sure what Aarons plans are but most have already been colorized. You'll have to ask Aaron. Colorization is still an imperfect process and the quality of the colrization or how it renders depends on the quality of the clip.
Thanks @Keith Idota for the birthday wishes. You’re right, there is some irony thrown into the color, b&w and colorized mix. But after the sale of DCP the ownership moved forward with other ventures and left American Bandstand behind. What remains is an incomplete archive of video tape to film preservation in a pre-digital era. I wish I could recall the sourced interview with Dick Clark where he recanted personally rescuing AB episodes destined for the trash. Not sure what the status of the Vh1 episodes is. I can tell you that less than a dozen of the 1960’s episodes ever made it to the half hour Vh1 rebroadcasts. Lucky to have saved what was transferred to non-degrading kinescopes.
I enjoyed watching Robin partnered with Don. I guess Art was elsewhere being awesome that day. That other couple were fantastic. But I'm a sucker for watching couples slow dance

Yep, I added a few seconds of color to the top 10 broadcast when I posted it last time. It would’ve been too cumbersome to add this time. Also, to answer your other question, the software I use to color these doesn’t allow any input from the user. The software (DeOldify) makes its best guess based on the shade of the black and white. I wish I could input some info to make it more authentic but alas. For now, we get what we get.
I noticed, among the small crowd of September 1969 dancers, two young men wearing glasses. They seem like brothers to me, but I'm not sure. If they were brothers, are they twins, stairsteps (1 year or less apart) or spaced apart in age like the majority of sibling groups? Let me know soon.
@@TheCabbagequeen there were over a dozen sets of siblings who danced on AB in the 1966-1970 period. Between Roll Call, Rate A Record, Spotlight dances, and the invaluable input from former dancers like Don Sanuskar, we can ID a good number of dancers. Unfortunately, the two bespectacled fellas you mention remain nameless. Two brothers who were regulars in 1969 were Art and Rudy Mikaelian, who were only about a year apart and can be seen dancing "The Spinner" alongside one another at the end of the "Sugar Sugar" clip.

Oh yeah, between all the experimentation on the show and the VH1 editors this is a pretty weird one, but a great welcome surprise to wake up to today!
New set for 1969-74 era
Commotion, what a great rocker. CCR one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
Always liked CCR. I had just started school about a week or so before this!
I was almost eight months old when this aired.

I love the music intro. It’s like a Chicago song
Aired a day before my 15th birthday✌️
Put a little love'teamo in our hearts'amen
Nothin' like smokin Michoacan spears while listening to CCR! Absolutely great times. Can we please have the sixties again, only this time without Vietnam?

Desde 🇪🇸 recordando mi adolescencia, yo bailaba igual toda la tarde del domingo en la discoteca. Gracias por tantos recuerdos.🌼🌻🌸
Lol
I will provide it to Aaron in full color

Well I just went back to junior high. And thought of my classmates, Jean
Great Post! Sorry I know I ask this a lot but could you post the November 9th 1963 episode soon? I can’t wait to see that one!
On the VH1 intro, Clark mentioned that they almost lost their recorded perfirmance TWICE. Once due to technical difficulties.
What a great bunch of songs. 🎶🎵🎶 A b/w upload... I was getting used to the colorized versions. 🎨 Anyway, this is great. HB, dancer Don. 🧁🥂
Thanks @merce10554. It’s still a great ride 👍

@@jerrygil1965 The people who danced on the AB show and those who watched it represented the beginning of the end of the counterculture, they were not freaks, even if some of them did take acid!

Green River my Favorite
Proud Mary, ye! Hello!,2021,,
I had just started reading Billboard about this time (heard about it on the "Music Scene" program with David Stenberg) and that became my Bible.
Great upload Aaron! Thanks!
Atleast it contained facts!
Desde santo domingo República Dominicana me gusta esto. Pero más me gustaría saber cuáles están vivos que lo publiquen porque habrá muchos fallecidos ya gracias
Green river was great record back in the day
CCR and John Fogerty still going strong today. BWhat a songwriter and musician!
Burt Bacharach Nikki... movie of the week theme!!!...😮...I was there when I was a boy 😮
Who's the tallish brunette with all the hair and head moves? Good dancer.
Real cool
VH1 cut out all the roll calls spotlight dances and rate a records///all the things that made kids watch the show.
Somehow the music today rhyming rapping vulgarity scary lyrics, tattoos covering entire body people wearing suits with sneakers, what happened to the class of our country? It’s lost in the 60s my friends, God help us all!!!!
Yeah. But sixties were the best
Used to have all of CCRs records.
Stu Cook, the bassist gives the band, a rather, mature credibility.
Yes Keith the “Jean” Spotlight with only two couples is the only one of its kind from that era.
I enjoyed watching Robin partnered with Don. I guess Art was elsewhere being awesome that day. That other couple were fantastic. But I'm a sucker for watching couples slow dance
NO SHOTS OF THE SEATS EITHER, I GET THE IMPRESSION A LOT OF REGS DIDNT GET LETTERS OF ADMISSIONBUT HOW DID THEY PICK THE NEW PEOPLE? WAS THERE A FLOATING WAITING IN LINE LIST OR SOMETHING?

How long had the Mike Curb Theme been the open to the show by this time?
Hi Joe, the new set, logo, and Mike Curb theme stated just 2 weeks prior to this episode on Sept. 6. Take Care
@@YCDTI Thanks, Aaron! Great stuff. I really appreciate it!
Aaron, isn't this the same show where you spliced in "bits" of the original color Video Tape broadcast?
Yep, I added a few seconds of color to the top 10 broadcast when I posted it last time. It would’ve been too cumbersome to add this time. Also, to answer your other question, the software I use to color these doesn’t allow any input from the user. The software (DeOldify) makes its best guess based on the shade of the black and white. I wish I could input some info to make it more authentic but alas. For now, we get what we get.
Just think Woodstock was a month before August 1969 and ccr was there lol
ONLY TWOCOUPLES IN THE SPOTLIGHT DANCE???
When ABC was worth something other than bashing Trump and Republicans.
I wonder if any of those couples are still together in 2023?
I noticed, among the small crowd of September 1969 dancers, two young men wearing glasses. They seem like brothers to me, but I'm not sure. If they were brothers, are they twins, stairsteps (1 year or less apart) or spaced apart in age like the majority of sibling groups? Let me know soon.
Stairsteps? I guess it's no longer PC to call them "Irish Twins"
@@yossarian6799 "Irish Twins" is a term I'll take. That's a synonym for stairsteps.
THAT YOU KIM? ANYWAYS, YES MANY SIBLINGS LIKE THE HITES, GORDONS, EVEN PEG AND SIS DONNA...CREEPY WHEN BRO AND SIS DANCED TOGETHER. Not unusual to see siblings dance at different times...perla and paula abalouche danced years apart, also Brian and Snook Decessio.
