Everyone needs to read Mercury and Me because it's the softest, the most heartbreaking book I have ever read. Jim really loved him with all his heart and didn't deserve to be treated like he wasn't part of Freddie's life. That man was the love of his life and stayed with him until the end.
It is generally acknowledged by those closest to Freddie that Mary Austin was the love of his life. Obviously Hutton and Mercury were partners for the last years of Freddie's life, but Hutton did seem to want to minimize the closeness of Freddie and Mary, and it seemed he was trying to promote himself a bit.
After reading Mercury and Me I must say that they really were soulmates. They really loved each other and it breaks my heart they couldn't get old together.
C Su Then why did Jim continue to work until Freddie died? Why did he work as a barber and then as Freddie’s gardener? He even refused to let Freddie pay for their house in Ireland and he got a bank loan. Stop talking out your ass
Gosh I wish this man would have met Fred in 1979. It might have saved his life. Freddie was always searching for a partner. The guys in Queen, the people who lived with Freddie and even Mary all liked Jim Hutton. They knew he loved Freddie for the right reasons. I mean, he had never even been to a rock concert before seeing Fred at Live Aid.

Yes, I think that in regard of the memory of Jim Hutton they prefered showing their first encounter at a party at Freddie's house instead of at a gay club. Nothing wrong with gay clubs, lol, but you have to think about the look of it and what the family could feel, etc. Plus a meeting at home where they can talk together alone shows the intimacy between them that could not be shown on screen if the scene was shot in a club, and they probably didn't have time to make ANOTHER scene where they'd meet again at a restaurant.... There are multiple parameters that can lead to changes in a movie.
But I thought Jim said in this interview he met Freddie twice before they met a third time at the club.. in the film quite a few things are compressed to fit about 20 years into 2 hours, and I thought the scene where Freddie meets Jim was brilliant. It doesn't matter if everything isn't completely as it was in real life, what matters is how well the film portrays the narrative and how accurately it conveys the spirit of things. My only problem with the movie was it was just too short - having to condense everything too much and parts were pretty rushed. However the cast have already said in interviews that a lot more was shot than could be fitted into the theatrical edit, so an extended cut will be released on DVD. I am definitely going to get that over the theatrical cut. Unfortunately it's a pretty impossible task to condense 20 years worth of epic and often meandering real life story into a 2 hour film. I did think that a kind of miniseries (HBO or something) of maybe 10 hour-long episodes would have suited the story much better.. but hey ho, I still really enjoyed the film and the spirit of Freddie was there in spades. I also actually appreciated the fact that it's introducing whole new generations of young people to a band as brilliant and creatively inspiring as Queen rather than it just being some 18 rated durge obsessed with Freddie's gay relationships, sex and death for crusty old men who already know all about him. Freddie's sexuality was very much secondary to his work, creativity, love and spirit.
@ Mike Girard In biopics It's difficult to be 100% accurate for various reasons (people not wanting to have their names used, places that do not exist anymore and/or not having the budget to recreate, not having enough time to tell everything, being respectful of the family of a deceased person, etc.) So usualy biopics focus on certain things and either don't talk about others or try to tell the same kind of things in another ways. I think documentaries and books have more freedom because it's easier to tell every sides of a "truth" than in a regular movie . Bohemian Rhapsody chose to show "the legend", not the truth, and in this case I think it is paradoxically pretty respectful about what Freddie was about. In a movie with the official "Queen" label on it The SHOW must go on.

Hey buddy you in London ? The only reason was because Freddie new Jim was HIV positive. Mary has a family so he gave it to her. Also Mary was manipulative and disrespected Freddie a lot.
I read his book and I thought it was great. It wasn't so much about giving away Freddie's secrets, but more about himself and how his life changed from an average person. I wish he had put in the pictures of the tables he made Freddie as he seemed proud of making them. He helped to look after Freddie in the end and if you care about Freddie, then care about Jim, as Jim made him happy.
I feel so sad because Jim had to go through the pain of having someone you love leave you and not come back, forever. I feel he was a good man and would never hurt Freddie intentionally. Thank you and love you Freddie Mucury and Jim Hutton.
Freddie you finally found someone to love you and to love them back. I’m so very happy that you had your time with Jim. We still miss you deeply Freddie. I know you must be the most flamboyant angel in heaven! 👊🏻✌🏻You are probably putting on shows and singing for the other angels!! 😇 ROCK ON FREDDIE!!!!
I just today finished reading Mercury and Me. It's a wonderful book, telling the story of the last few years of Freddie's life, and his life with Jim Hutton. Strongly recommended for any fan of Freddie Mercury.
I believe we all have many parts to "the self," so it doesn't surprise me that Freddie was such a dynamic, outgoing PERFORMER but off stage a quiet, reserved person. I think many brilliant performers are quiet and somewhat introverted in every day life.
You can tell he was a private shy guy. I’m so glad he spent his years with jim and was happy. He gave so much happiness to others and he deserved that back ten fold ❤️
Back to1987. AIDS was unknown lethal infection. Their friends of about 100 people were already dead. But Jim did not board a lifeboat of the Titanic. He chose to continue to stay near Freddie as a lover (not a close friend). I think Freddie would have been very surprised and very glad. Even if Jim had a drawback , I want to thank that action to Jim.
I lost my baby brother to AIDS in 1986 , he was 29 years old ...it's incredible how ignorance & fear ran rampant & I lost my job, my home, my marriage because he was my brother however I have no regrets on how well I personally treated him ! I would never wish this disease on anyone, not even my worst enemies !
Yeah, he probably thought he was gonna inherit the house, that's why he stuck around. If he really loved Freddie, he wouldn't publish a book with so many personal and private details. Everyone knows how private Freddie was.
@Yo1969Yo >> Also Mary has said in interviews that she felt lonely when she moved into Freddie's house as his staff, who she describes as being like her family, all left because Freddy was so generous to them. She makes no mention of the fact that they wanted to stay but she asked them to leave. Now it was her house, but it was a pretty unkind thing to evict the 3 guys who had cared for Freddy day and night. I just find the way she paints it amusing.
I can't imagine his pain about losing the love of his life, it was amazing seeing Freddie happy especially in his last days with jim right by his side, now that's true love.
He is so sweet here. You can see the charm that would have attracted Freddie. I just finished reading his book. It is so sweet and sad. What is most devastating is not just his loss of Freddie, and how he suffered afterwards, but the regret that he felt that he did not get closer to Freddie about his health. It appears that Freddie really compartmentalised his life, right up to the end. If you do that, then no one person really knows you. He kept Jim at a little distance, even Jim. I feel sorry for them both for this. I wonder if Mary really did dislike Jim? I wonder if she blamed Freddie's gay lovers for his death? Was that a part of it? Can only speculate. From Jim's book it sounds like she tried to get rid of Jim a few months before Freddie passed. It sounds like Freddie's household could be a hotbed of intrigue. Maybe Freddie liked it that way. I'm glad for them both that Jim stayed. I'm sure Freddie would not have lasted so long without Jim's love and devotion.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 No, Freddie wasn't attracted, Freddie use this man for making jealous other person but didn't function...and in 1996 hutton was forced by Queen staff to tell the truth. Read my comments and you will find hutton told and wrote only lies . He recognized he was NOTHING NOBODY for Freddie, just a simply Freddie's servant nothing more. Even hutton said he wrote those lies for making himself important....look for the interview, this book is a hugeshits
i know:(( they both really did deserve better. fred went through so much with relationships before jim & i just wish they had met sooner. i just know there was so much they wanted to do- their irish & swiss home, they maybe wanted kids sometime. gah, heartbreaking
@@leiabreen I think that would have kept Fred grounded, and his lifestyle would have been entirely different. He would probably still be making music today. Glad he found love in the end, but life really is cruel at times...
I'm just finishing the book, with tears, It is such a beautiful love story. I'm glad Freddie found Jim. It seems from the book, they had a great love and to me Jim was the love of his life. The book inspired me in so many levels. How lucky were the people close to him
They took a lot of artistic liberties with that film. Freddie apparently didn't get diagnosed until two years after Live Aid. So that scene where he was speaking to the band about being diagnosed was made up.
Shane Corcoran ... everyone in the theater was talking about that. The band to allow such fake scenes to be included says something about them. Like why would you allow it to be released as is.
The message is the same: He wanted them to know he had aids and he told them. His idea was the same all he wanted to do was keep it private and keep making music. So i think it doesnt matter if they only stuck to 95% of the facts. Important thing is that they supported his wishes.
I hate how they change history and take liberties when it involves someone's life and legacy. Why change things when there are people who were there and have gone on record to verify the facts of what went down? It makes you question the entire movie.. his life was colorful and intriguing in its own right - there was no reason to change things up.
@@sahirygnobehi6448 It's a movie, not a documentary. There are dozens of documentaries and interviews that show the truth, so no, it doesn't say anything about the band. They recognise that not everything in a movie has to be, or should be, the truth. And they ended the film at Live Aid because it ends it on a high, but since people would freak out if they didn't acknowledge Freddie having AIDS, they brought the time of the diagnosis forward a bit so people wouldn't accuse them of ignoring something so huge.
doubt it, medicine only got more efficient around 1996 and even then people still died from it, and freddie had full blown aids not just hiv which means he had been infected for a long time
@@63586jonathan except Magic Johnson has been living with it since 92 and has been on the cocktail ever since. If Freddie had gotten infect maybe 3 to 4 years after he he did (most would guess very late 70s or very early 80 or 81) say maybe 84 or 85 instead, incubation taking roughly 10 years, he could have made it to 93 94 or 95 and possibly have a chance to survive, but alas he didn't and the world is worse off without him. I miss Freddie.
Freddie said the time he was with Jim was his happiest years💕I wish Freddie had met Jim earlier, it could have helped him stop his reckless lifestyle and Freddie could still be alive
I read Mercury and Me, I liked it. No doubt Jim and Freddie loved each other deeply, and Jim was the settling influence that Freddie needed at that time. However, this book, much like the movie, shone light on just one thread of a very complex human being. New fans who have come this way after seeing the movie see Freddie's male relationships as black and white....Paul Prenter or Jim Hutton...devil or angel. Freddie's first documented gay relationship was with David Mimms in the 70's, but comments have been written that he was sexually active during his school days in India. Much is made of who was the love of Freddie's life - Mary or Jim - when David caught Freddie cheating, Freddie was quoted as saying 'I have enough love for you all!'. I believe him. Driven probably by affection deprivation as a small child, his absolute need for love and adoration made him a very difficult person to have a committed relationship with, despite it being the thing Freddie craved the most. Freddie did cheat on Mary, and on Jim, and probably any person he had a relationship with, as he could not get what he needed from one person, but that didn't make him any less sincere or loveable. My point being we will never know who is telling the truth, this book, another book, the movie, because Freddie's relationship with love was so complex. There is a reason why there is no 'fact' department in a book store.....simply fiction and non-fiction....what we believe will never be confirmed.
How did you explain my thoughts? Wizardry! I've watched lots of documentaries, the film and done my own research on things. Considering reading his book although it's the first I've heard of it, I'm sure it's excellent! He was really such a complex person and I can't understand him at all, I wish I could but he was so complicated. He was like 300 different people and no one could ever know them all, maybe it's through press depiction but thats the impression I get from him. I think it would be impossible to write a book, a film or anything that fully showed what a wonderful human being he was
@@randomstranger6577 Magic!😁 If you are as obsessed with all things Queen/Freddie as I am, then I highly recommend this book. It's not written particularly well, but Jim was a hairdresser, not an author, but the sentiment is all there. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll break your heart at the end. If the book is to be believed, Jim loved Freddie very much, and was the immovable object to Freddie's unstoppable force, their personalities complemented each other....to a point. Like you said there were '300' sides to Freddie that I doubt he understood, or considered much, but he fascinates me! I don't think he ever considered he could have love and sex in the same person, and probably didn't...entirely. His need to control the circumstances around him - probably due to shyness/insecurity - was a huge part of the book, totally opposite to the bold ready for anything stage character. 27 years after his death, fans still cannot get a handle on the enigma he was, I doubt any one media stream ever will

I was a close friend of Fred Bulsara (Freddie Mercury) from our first day of enrolment in Fashion Design 1b at Ealing Art College, Ealing, London UK. until his death. Of course you do not have to believe me. You may read about that in Mark Blake's book, 'Is This The Real Life.' Jim Hutton is telling the absolute truth....everything. Mark Blake has said to me, "You knew Freddie longer than anyone else I have been able to find." Fred was warm, shy, humorous, and a sweetie. Strange words? yes but true.
NEXT CAN A FILM BE MADE FOR BOTH THESE MEN SPLENDID LOVE❤️❤️. SINCE SOME ARE NOT OKAY WITH HOW LOW THE RELATIONSHIP WAS PORTRAYED IN THE MOVIE. DO A SEPARATE ONE ON JUST HIS LOVE LIFE. Then they’ll be happy😊😊
i think there was something about wanting to not make the movie centered around freddie's sexuality and the whole AIDS thing, since it's what he was bothered about all his life and he didn't wanted to be remembered for that. a movie about him and jim would heavily focus on that since he spent his last years with him. still would love to see that so long as it was respectful. they have such a lovely story
My 💔 goes out to Jim over his loss at the time and the way he was treated afterwards. Freddie would have been broken by the way he was treated after his demise. RIP Freddie & Jim 🥀
I love Jim Hutton, Freddie Mercury is my biggest inspiration in life love music and fashion❤️ and they relationship Jim and Freddie had is what I aspire to have ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Alice Yes and “technically” Freddy died from pneumonia....... but he contracted it because hiv weakens your immune system and at that point in his diagnosis he would have never been able to survive it. It was the same situation with Jim. The point wasn’t who contracted it from who, the point is that it is an awful decease that attacks your entire body.
@MrANDREWPATRICK Freddie left more to Mary simply because she deserved it, she knew him better than anyone never betrayed him loved him unconditionally. In an interview his sister said she suspected he was gay but they never talk about it, she was his only sibling if there was any real closness he would have tell her everything. The family's faith had a lot to do with things and Freddie suffered silently for it. When he was ill Jim and friends took care of him, the family visited highly unusual.
MrPireasxios It’s entirely possible. Maybe Yoko and Jim were chosen BECAUSE they didn’t know them. Because they treated them like everyone else. I think I’d rather date someone who treats me like a fellow human than someone who idolizes me.
Terry Cotterman What movie? Bohemian rhapsody? Freddie left money to Jim when he died, the man lived in a mansion, he had money to give. I’m just not understanding that sentence...
Terry Cotterman I’ll have to look into it further but I am almost certain that he left some things to other people he cared about not just Mary. Him and Mary broke up long before he died and lived life as friends after, Mary was not his girlfriend.

I'm not sure if freddie would've liked having his personal life being exposed in a book. Also a lot of people say that jim got mad that freddie gave most of his assets to mary, is that true?
Difficult to answer that in a youtube comment but to sum it up, mary wouldn't let Jim have the things Freddie gave him, and the things he gave Freddie. Jim wasn't "mad" everything went to Mary, Jim was even given a house that was meant for Freddie and Jim to live in. The main issues were the gifts that held value between Jim and Freddie that Mary kept
Mary DID remain devoted to Freddie and yes he knew it and acknowledged it publicly and let's be clear, HE NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED JIM PUBLICLY. Mary remained loyal at expense to her own life he knew it she was preg with son #2 when freddie died. He left her the bulk but crap loads to jim his family and all his friends
Listen I read the book to many times and am not saying Jim did not love Freddie but in the end he did betray Freddie's trust by writing a tell all book about Freddie's personal life, which I am sure Freddie would have been both hurt and pissed at the same time. I am so glad Freddie did not tell Jim where he really wanted his to be or he probably sell that story too. I think as time went by Jim was bothered by what left him and maybe the other secret Freddie left with Mary was to evict him and Jim was upset about that. just my opinion
Simple details like the specifics of how they met should have never been changed. They explain much about both characters involved. If you want to write a film with your version of the truth, don't claim your character is Freddie Mercurie.
As a shy and vulnerable man that Freddie was, Jim seems like his perfect match in that he seemed very mellow and has a soothing nature. It's not how long yo u live but, that you made your mark in people's hearts and that hopefully you found love. I think Freddie did that.
Freddie (various quotes): I just don’t trust anybody because I’ve been let down so many times. The more you’ve been let down, the more hurt you endure. I find it very hard to open up to people because I just don’t trust the buggers. You can’t win in my situation, and that’s the way it is. When you have success, it becomes very difficult. You find out the real baddies. I just take it as it comes now. In fact, that’s why I’ve built up a very hard exterior. I mean most of the time when people talk to me, I immediately think, “What do they want? Is he after this or that?…. I do put up a barrier around myself, so it is hard for people to get in and to know the real me. I fall in love much too quickly and that results in me getting badly hurt. I...end up getting hurt all the time. Maybe I just draw the wrong kind of people to me? I’ve got scars all over. But I can’t help myself because basically I’m a softie… I’ve cried rivers. I may be tough on the outside, but I’m very soft-centred. I have this hard, macho shell which I project on stage but there’s a much softer side too, which melts like butter. I’m very intricate and delicate. I can be very soft, very slushy and mushy… I can be very vulnerable, a real baby, which is invariably when I get trodden on… I’m a human being. I’d like people to recognise the fact that I’m a human being. They always blame the end of the love affair on me because I’m the successful one. Whoever I’m with, they seem to get into a battle of trying to match up to me, and overcompensating. And then they write a ”anal sex and tell” book full of lies to pay Freddie and Mary back for not giving him more money and respect. How can anyone POSSIBLY claim they have researched Freddie and then say that he wouldn't care that Hutton was writing a lot of lies and private truths in his ”Freddie Was Too Effeminite and Manipulative for MY Tastes and was a Raunchy Bottom” book? Freddie was well aware that there were a lot of selfish f*ckers in this world. But he was searching for someone who would NEVER write the kind of book Hutton wrote and who would never tell the lies Hutton told. That Hutton turned put to be just another ligger angling for his ”cut” of Freddie’s estate and who RETALIATED by writing that book so would have ”the last word” is horribly sad. And what’s worse. Freddie’s so-called fans are helping Hutton’s betrayal live on and proliferate instead of standing up for Freddie. The FINAL betrayal. The fans whom Freddie whispered ”I still love you” to in his last music video, end up helping his gardener spread lies after his death. And they attack the ONE person who never betrayed Freddie. Peter Freestone "She (Mary) was incredibly important. Don’t forget, she looked after him for the first years when he wasn’t making a penny and Mary was working. So she paid the rent, she paid for everything when they were living together” Freddie’s friend actress Yasmine Pettigrew: “They [Freddie and Mary] were very much a pair. He watched over her as well. He always wanted to know, if he was with Mary, that Mary was OK. She stuck by him and he stuck by her. You put your life in your hands if you tried to come between them, that’s for sure. Everyone knew that. They had a bond which people who are together forever have.” Yet here are Hutton’s fans pumping him up while they help him spread lies about Mary. SHAMEFUL. Anyone who thinks Freddie would've been OK with that, DOESN'T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST CLUE who Freddie Mercury really was.

Exactly. Somebody gets it!
@ Mike Girard
In biopics It's difficult to be 100% accurate for various reasons (people not wanting to have their names used, places that do not exist anymore and/or not having the budget to recreate, not having enough time to tell everything, being respectful of the family of a deceased person, etc.) So usualy biopics focus on certain things and either don't talk about others or try to tell the same kind of things in another ways.
Thank you for clarifying that. People dont understand that. You are right the film is NOT a documentary.
Rest in Peace Jim. I hope with all my heart that you will be reunited with Freddie.

I just today finished reading Mercury and Me. It's a wonderful book, telling the story of the last few years of Freddie's life, and his life with Jim Hutton. Strongly recommended for any fan of Freddie Mercury.
It's awesome that Freddie and Jim had each other. They seem like two of the kindest soul's, meant for each other! God Bless you all!
I believe we all have many parts to "the self," so it doesn't surprise me that Freddie was such a dynamic, outgoing PERFORMER but off stage a quiet, reserved person. I think many brilliant performers are quiet and somewhat introverted in every day life.
Rosslyn Picton Andy Bell was quite flamboyant on stage but reserved in private.
That is very true. Michael Jackson was the same way. There is definitely many parts to a person.
Audrey Hepburn was one of many.
You can tell he was a private shy guy. I’m so glad he spent his years with jim and was happy. He gave so much happiness to others and he deserved that back ten fold ❤️

When Freddie tested HIV positive, Freddie said to Jim that if Jim want to break up Freddie would understand. That’s true love right there.

Dave Clark was with Freddie when he passed.
RIP Jim and Freddie has the Love of His Life with Him again .

No, Freddie wasn't attracted, Freddie use this man for making jealous other person but didn't function...and in 1996 hutton was forced by Queen staff to tell the truth. I watched Bohemian Rhapsody Movie Last Night, Freddie met Jim at Club but on movie they met at Freddie's Party and Jim was one of his waiters....
The tragedy is that if Freddie had been infected a few months later he might still be with us today. RIP to the great man. xxx
HIV there is no cure. Medicine only got better 2010
Freddie probably contracted it in the late 70s, so a few years wouldn’t have helped...
doubt it, medicine only got more efficient around 1996 and even then people still died from it, and freddie had full blown aids not just hiv which means he had been infected for a long time

R.I.P Jim:( we still love you.
R.I.P.,Jim.i read the book years ago and I love it.Thanks for sharing!
It’s ok to be Gay Because even though Freddy was Gay His fans Loved Him
How did you explain my thoughts?

Difficult to answer that in a youtube comment but to sum it up, mary wouldn't let Jim have the things Freddie gave him, and the things he gave Freddie. I think as time went by Jim was bothered by what left him and maybe the other secret Freddie left with Mary was to evict him and Jim was upset about that. just my opinion
Jim is so cute!! I wanna hug him forever! :3
Simple details like the specifics of how they met should have never been changed. They explain much about both characters involved. If you want to write a film with your version of the truth, don't claim your character is Freddie Mercurie.
WE'LL HE IS NOT SUFFERING NO MORE OR IN PAIN HE'S RESTING 🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤
& how 🤔 would you know this?!?!
As a shy and vulnerable man that Freddie was, Jim seems like his perfect match in that he seemed very mellow and has a soothing nature. It's not how long yo u live but, that you made your mark in people's hearts and that hopefully you found love. I think Freddie did that.
Freddie (various quotes):
I just don’t trust anybody because I’ve been let down so many times.
But I can’t help myself because basically I’m a softie…
I’ve cried rivers. I may be tough on the outside, but I’m very soft-centred. I have this hard, macho shell which I project on stage but there’s a much softer side too, which melts like butter. I’m very intricate and delicate. I can be very soft, very slushy and mushy… I can be very vulnerable, a real baby, which is invariably when I get trodden on…
I’m a human being.
Peter Freestone
"She (Mary) was incredibly important. Don’t forget, she looked after him for the first years when he wasn’t making a penny and Mary was working. So she paid the rent, she paid for everything when they were living together”
Freddie’s friend actress Yasmine Pettigrew:
“They [Freddie and Mary] were very much a pair. He watched over her as well. He always wanted to know, if he was with Mary, that Mary was OK. She stuck by him and he stuck by her.
You put your life in your hands if you tried to come between them, that’s for sure. Everyone knew that. They had a bond which people who are together forever have.”
Yet here are Hutton’s fans pumping him up while they help him spread lies about Mary. SHAMEFUL.
Anyone who thinks Freddie would've been OK with that, DOESN'T HAVE THE SLIGHTEST CLUE who Freddie Mercury really was.
Mary is that you??
