  • Here is the first guitar arrangement of "In The Real Early Morning" by Jacob Collier, recorded live. I love singing and playing this beautiful, dreamy song and wondered what it would sound like if Jacob played it on acoustic guitar. My acoustic cover is "in the style of Jacob" in his signature guitar tuning DAEGAD. I used my pedalboard to create a mixture of guitar effects to mimic the "Antarctic Sun" synth preset that he uses on the In My Room album version.

In the Paul Davids interview, How Jacob Collier Reinvented the Guitar, Jacob describes how versatile his 5 string Taylor and Strandberg is, however, to me the beauty and luxury lies in Jacob's guitar tuning, DAEAD. Using what I’ve learned from examining his other acoustic versions for my Jacob guitar tutorials, I've arranged the chord progression, chord voicings, and chord inversions how I believe he might've done it (or might do someday). My choices are based on how he tends to simplify the original arrangements (easy chord voicings within the range of the guitar), as well as factoring in his technical proficiency on guitar vs. piano.
Since there is no precedent, the unknowns are how he would fingerpick with his right hand, as well as add his signature hammer-on/pull-off fills with his left hand. Given that he varies this on each performance, this is up for interpretation.
Justin is playing a Kostal MDW guitar (kostalguitars.com) with a Petillo soundboard transducer and Sunrise magnetic pickup.

Great stuff Justin! And just how AWESOME is it that we can now take JC classics, released all the way back in 2016 when the world of guitar/acoustic Jacob hadn't even started yet (the iconic 5-string Taylor was only custom built for him until 2021), and now do *true Jacobean sounding* covers, ourselves, ON the ACOUSTIC guitar?!?!?
    I mean, it's so exciting!!!
You're doing _In My Room_ tunes here, that's his debut album! (if I'm not mistaken)... So dope... I can't thank you enough... It's gonna become so repetitive and annoying, but thank you! Thank you, thank you, and thank you!!!

Agreed! To make acoustic that which never was, and have a gateway into better understanding those songs he plays on guitar. 😉 You are so welcome!

Gorgeous, your voice sounds as strong as ever. Beautiful tune...love the space in the composition...how the melody floats over the chords as they change. Great work.

Hey John, great to hear from you! Thanks for taking a listen. I love how this song just ebbs and flows. Your word “float“ is a perfect description.

Thank you so much! I've got a licensed transcription already available here: www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1551153/Product.aspx - I plan to make a tutorial for this as well, even though it's not teaching what Jacob plays, since he hasn't done this song on acoustic before. Check out my other Jacob tutorials as a primer for learning this and his other songs. It's in DAEGAD and uses all the same shapes as they others, along with a few new ones.
