I love this, the information is very helpful! The taiwanese mandarin sounds softer/prettier accent to me because of these differences 😊 although learning to say 4 and 10 was very confusing for a little while

just like our thai languang that thai paople often speak different sound comparing to its original sound, it might sounds incorrect character but we just did it for easy, convenient pronunciation to speak in casual daylife.
i love taiwan's mandarin and love traditional characters.

The Taiwanese accent sounds softer and also more down to earth, while Mainland accent sounds a bit too strict.
As a Chinese Malaysian, I find the Taiwanese accent easier to imitate, since I'm Hokkien, similar to Taiwanese. I tried the Mainland pronunciation, the more I tried the worse it got and I never felt comfortable with it, plus when I tried to do that accent locally it's too obvious, but the Taiwanese accent is much closer to our accent (but nicer) and I have a much better time speaking with it, many of our words are also more similar to the Taiwanese ones, perhaps due to Taiwanese music industry that I grew up with.
However, it's a bit frustrating that now the Mainland Mandarin is dominating many of the learning books and it hard to find authentic Taiwanese learning books, though good thing I know it's Taiwanese if it in traditional Chinese, I want to the authentic Taiwanese Mandarin!

No wonder I heard a lot of 'si' when watching your country's drama. Example:
“Ni si bu si... = 你是不是...”
    “Mei si = 沒事”

Would people in Taiwan think badly of you if you use Standard Mandarin pronunciation instead of the local one, or would they not care much?

    • @ceciliachenchinese

I think it doesnt really matter since you are not from Taiwan 🙂

🙂 Nice, I am saying not a Taiwanese so they will understand you speak in standard way (because they expect you maybe learn it in language center) Teacher there always emphasize on standars pronunciation.

I've worked with two guys from Taiwan. Want to sound Taiwanese when speaking English? Just pretend you downed a gallon of whiskey, speak like your tongue is the size of a large cucumber, and absolutely refuse to use consonants. There ya have it.

If you ignore the politics, learn to speak the proper mandarin from CCTV china.
