SS General Gerlach(Actor Gunter Meisner) : I'm Gerlach and who are you?
Major Paul Krueger ( Actor Robert Vaughn): I have just come from Remagen.
SS General Gerlach: Huh, Come in.
Major Paul Krueger: General, The Americans have taken the bridge.i must report to General Von Brock...
SS General Gerlach: we've just been discussing the situation at Remagen with General Von Brock. I've been sent by The Fuhrer to learn the facts. I'm sure you can help explain.
Major Paul Krueger: Very simple, did not have enough explosives to blow up the bridge.
SS General Gerlach: Is that your excuse Herr Major! There is never enough for you cowards, is there?the truth is you waited too long.
Major Paul Krueger: Herr General we must counterattack. Blow up the bridge at once. Any further delay would be fatal.
General Von Brock: it's no use Paul there's nothing we can do any longer.
SS General Gerlach: Major Kreuger you will address your remarks to me.
General Von Brock has been relieved of his command and you Herr Major
The Bridge at Remagen is no longer your concern.
    You are under arrest!

[Kreuger is offered a last cigarette before he is executed by firing squad. He and the Nazi Officer hear planes]
Major Paul Kreuger (Actor Robert Vaughn) : Ours or theirs?
    Nazi Officer: Enemy planes, sir.
Major Paul Kreuger: But who is the enemy?

    • @tomtom34b
      @tomtom34b 15 дней назад +1

      With only 36 men, sir,
there's a limit to what we can do.
Sergeant Becker, I'm not asking you
      to launch a major offensive.
I'm only asking that you hold off
      the enemy until reinforcements arrive.
Excuse me, Herr Major. We have
      heard a lot about reinforcements.
The men don't believe it any more.
I tell you, two panzer battalions
will be here in a few hours.
      Do you believe me?
      Yes, Herr Major.
Then you make your men believe it.
      Do you understand?
I watched the movie in german, as I grew up in germany in my childhood. The german translation is even better, imo. As it captures the will to resist and continue the fighting while meeting the harsh reality of the situation. Two german actors, who also starred in the longest day, were in the movie: The Captain of the bridge demolition detachment, who went into captivity, and the hotel owner.

Major Barnes(Bradford Dillman): Look, uh, Hartman, I know it's been a hard blow. It's always a shock to lose a buddy, a man you worked with and fought with. I mean, we're all human. I guess what I'm trying to say is... I realize Captain Colt was your friend. He was my friend, too.
    Lt. Phil Hartman(George Segal): Bullshit.
    [Long pause]
Major Barnes: Would you, uh... care to rephrase that, Lieutenant?
Lt. Phil Hartman: You don't have any friends out here, Major. Neither do I. We can't afford them. Neither one of us.
