it's actually a thoroughly studied fact: people think their own city/country is better than others.
At 66 years old, took my bicycle to New York City on the train by myself and used it as my primary means of transportation for four days. Had a great time and probably did a months worth of scaring myself in those 4 days. NYC is one of the most bike friendly cities in the states in my opinion. Keep up the great work Mary.

@@samrusoff I am from NYC but actually drove a car there... not good. But when in Amsterdam I bike it all the way. NYC is very bike friendly and I rode as well as skated for fun but needed a car for commute between divorced parents.
Now take your bike and do the Kaluga region in Russia where a namesake of yours used to live, work, and contemplate space flight)))
A dutch singer-songwriter sings in one of his songs:"Angs is moar veur eben, spiet is veur altied."
This line in low saxon dialect translates into english as fear lasts just a moments, regret lasts forever.
Mary, I had saved this video. I watched it a year ago (via Rick Beato). Good for you! I left California end of 1980's, to move to Milan for five or six months. After twenty one years in Europe (Milan, Paris and London), I moved to New York. Each one had it's own beauty and challenges. The growth that happens is imo not obtainable any other way. I have to believe that this has brought so much to you (and to your art). Well done!! It makes such a difference. Not sure where you are now, but wherever it is, you're taking your new language and experiences with you everywhere you go. Best of luck going forwards!

I understand your fears, I am facing quite the same every time I am travelling abroad for my job, going out, taking the bus, the metro, the train, driving rental car and daring visiting some places, going to the restaurant, meeting people. My greatest fear is getting lost and not finding back my way to the hotel. It's stupid nowadays because we have gps and Google translator on our phones.Thank you for your videos and your very nice Bristol accent, very easy to understand for a French.
This was me with music for a long time. I've always been passionate about writing and recording songs, but the idea of performing in front of people and demanding that they give me their attention repelled me (despite the fact I never thought negatively about other people who did the same thing). Ultimately, now that I'm a little older, the idea of not pursuing my music is finally scarier to me than pursuing it. Inspiring video, Mary

I really relate to this; when I was 30, I left my home in Copenhagen and went to Bolivia for about a year to write my biology thesis. One of the motivators was that I didn’t speak a word of Spanish, but that I would return, not only with my thesis, but also with a new language skill. That I obliged myself to write or translate part of the thesis to Spanish as well, was an even stronger motivator for actually taking the challenge serious. I succeeded btw. My point, if I have any, is that combining learning a new skill with something you are passionate about really drives the process. So maybe a future goal could be writing Spanish lyrics for a song could make it less scary and more fun - not that I really believe that you are not having fun already.
I had a job interview today and it went terrible. They asked me to translate English to Japanese and vise versa simultaneously. I think I failed it and can't stop thinking about it. Can't sleep 😭 Your video gave me a little comfort.
Keep your head up! Who knows maybe they'll realize just how challenging that was to as of you and will admire you attempt. And if not, another chance will come. Hope it doesn't come a cross like empty words from a guy on the internet you've never met. It comes from a good place, really 😊

You are leading a very blessed life. I believe it is because you have done things that have scared you. You did it long before this video and the things that scare you now are very personal. Every performer is compelled to speak through their platform otherwise why do it. The difference between you and some, and why I feel you are compelling is that, you are genuine. Correct me if I am wrong but your goal is self fulfillment and not, "Look at Me!" Meaning, in it's modern self, where vanity is concerned. Keep being you Mary. God bless

For me the thought of going to a non English speaking country has always terrified me and I never had much of a desire to go to one until I met someone a couple years ago who is from Spain. She’s absolutely one of my very favorite people in the whole world so of course I miss her terribly and I would love to go there to see her but at the same time I still have that fear. I speak no Spanish at all and I feel like I’m going to be an immense embarrassment to her but either way fear or not when I can I’m going to actually go. Thank you for sharing this Mary, sometimes facing our greatest fears ends in the best reward. I hope you enjoy Spain!

One of the things you can do when studying a new lenguaje is to try think every thing you in your day in the lenguaje you are learning, starting from the simplest things to the difficult… little by little… one day at a time.

I started to use Duolingo to learn Spanish when the pandemic started. I am now up to level 4 and loving it. Highly recommended.

I'm also 31, and I think part of this stems from developing "confidence" in your 30's. I say "confidence" because it's sort of an inadequate word; it's more the fact that you have had plenty of embarrassments throughout your 20's and lived to talk about it. You find out that you aren't made of glass. It makes it much easier to put yourself out there and stop being so scared. I think it's also, frankly, part of the typical existential crisis that happens in your 30's. If you are anything like me, you start to acknowledge your own mortality. It might sound like a vapid platitude, but "life is short" starts to become the prevailing philosophy of your 30's.
Oh god, the part about talking about something too much is something I am SO guilty of. Don't think about it, just do it.
Music is one language that crosses every border and time zone around the world with universal understanding. You present so well and are observant so I would suggest that you could do a side hustle of RUclips travel guides.

I am 67 and have recently been informed that i am no longer needed at my company. In the last few weeks I have dragged out some songs, which I wrote many years ago and recorded on a cassette machine and have copied them on to a digital recorder . I am now working on those rough tapes to see if they can become more than just memories from a long distant past and maybe they have some potential . Good for you Mary. I am now 70 and regret to a degree not having done some things I dreamed about. If you have the wherewithal, do what you want while you can. I have found life has a habit of thwarting postponed dreams/plans by throwing completely unexpected obstacles in the path.

Great video, Mary! I'm terrible at doing things that scare me, so this was a much needed reminder to put myself out there more. As far as learning Spanish goes, here's my no. 1 tip (I'm a translator): listen to Spanish every single day, even if it's just 10-15 minutes. Learning grammar and doing exercises is great, and you should definitely do it (especially in the beginning), but a textbook alone will not make you fluent. Consistent input is KEY (even more so than speaking and writing imo, though that's also important).

Hi Mary, back in 2003 I decided for various reasons that I needed a holiday so after virtually sticking a pin in a map found myself alone in Turkey within a week. Anyway I made friends with a Russian lady. She couldn't speak a word of English and I couldn't speak a wordof Russian. I bought a Russian/English dictionary and we managed to converse and each of us learnt some of the other's language. I was invited to Russia for New Year which was really scary not knowing what to expect but I had a great time. So it shows that it pays to do the scary things sometimes. I made some pretty good lifelong friends as I did visiting Romania some years later. Travel to new countries can be amazing.

Great video. I’ve been doing something that scares me for the past few weeks. I’ve been a musician for 36 years, but I’ve never been confident in my singing so, in an effort to improve it by doing (and a bit of studying) I’ve been posting covers on my RUclips channel. I posted the first one (St. Vincent’s Slow Disco) on a whim, less than 12 hours after learning the changes and I’ve been following up with a new one just about every week since. I still don’t think that I have a conventionally good voice, but I am starting to appreciate it for what it is.
The best advice I was given Mary, when learning Spanish (still am) was don’t try to listen to every word, start by getting the gist and eventually you will fill in the gaps. Also, sorry there’s a second tip. Don’t fret about forming sentences to begin with. It’s about effective communication. So if you want to buy a bottle of water simply say ‘el agua por favor’. Buena suerte y disfruta Mary!

I'm from Chicago. My employees 5-6 were from Poland. These guys invited me into their group of friends. Feel lucky you didn't pick POLISH.. lol. Small words, then more small steps. The history and culture of Jamon in Spain is fun. Above all else don't take yourself or life too seriously. When you stood up and criticized the background so harshly make s me fear you will critise me harshly too.

Go for it! For me, languages and music always were two sides of the same coin, so there might even be some benefits to your music side showing up unexpectedly. And even if not: You need some inspiration and new input to keep going.

In January of 2020, I started my Whisky Riffs RUclips channel and a year later, my wife and I started to learn Italian - with the goal to retire in Italy some day. It’s all been scary, especially since I’m creeping up on the age of 60, but also so rewarding. Every scary thing I’ve done in my life has brought huge rewards. The times I’ve given into fear only leave stains of regret. Enjoy your journey, I’m certainly enjoying watching it. Cheers!

Besides enjoying your music and music related I find it so refreshing to hear someone's ideas and thoughts that seem to have been considered but not contrived. That usually only comes about from life experience and understanding the educational opportunities it presents. I'm a bit tired right now so this may wander a bit but basically you should be very proud of where you appear to be in your life. You are here in the moment. I mean we all are but you are making the effort to function in that way in your life. Kudos, Kiddo! Thanks for sharing your dreams. We need more of that from everyone. You are so fortunate that you can play and sing. I can play but don't have the confidence to sing so I always have to depend on others to do any live performing. Granted I could learn a style on guitar that doesn't require singing to gig but that really limits the options, especially for anything paying.

Mary, you conquered the language of music, which is far more complicated/difficult than Spanish(or other Romance languages), just remember your path/faith in learning music, the hard work you put into it, and Spanish will be a part of you in no time. Besides, in your previous posts, you said you took Spanish in school - like playing the pentatonic scales, it is there, you know it, it will come out without you thinking about it - in no time flat! I have a technique that enables me (a highly timid person with a fearful & feverish imagination) - I trick myself into thinking I'm NOT going to do something and then - sort of zombie-like - eventually just start doing it. This is why I hate planning, or commitment. I wait for the moment .... of madness, then start doing it. Having as it were, crossed the Rubicon, I still don't allow myself to believe I'm actually going to ... climb that mountain / attend that event / drive that distance, meet that person ........ (fill-in the dots) but wait till it's beyond turning back. I just get in the car, start the engine, press the accelerator and go. Zombie-like. It works.

Maria, as an English language teacher in Mexico I always told my students, make a lot of mistakes. That is where you learn. I also am learning Spanish with a lot of mistakes and people are so kind, and helpful. If you do not make mistakes then you already know everything and there is no need to learn. So mistakes can be good. Go to the markets, converse, make lots of mistakes, and while making those mistakes you will also make friends, kind, helpful friends.
