- The Hawaii handshake. It's a way that guys greet each other in Hawaii. I never noticed the way locals shake hands until recently, since we haven't been able to really shake hands in a while. So in this video, I wanted to break down the different handshakes we use in Hawaii, how to know when to use them, and things to consider with each handshake.
Really enjoyed putting this video together. Thanks to my wife for letting me film us shaking hands. We had a lot of good laughs.
Big mahalo to VH07V (Aloha Revolution) for sending out the hat and other apparel. If you're interested in checking out more local apparel, please check out vh07v.com.

This was probably the most fun I had filming a video on this channel. Big mahalo to my wife for indulging me with countless handshakes to get the perfect b-roll. 🤙
Chris, I had to laugh as I'm glad being an elder and social hermit. Too much mechanics and thinking when our there is too much stuff on. Sight, sound, observation, movement, angle, speed. Ho man, I thought passing geometry and trig was tough. All this going on for a handshake. My friends took me for a geek guy of the group but with the calculation and stuff going on, I think it's the other way around. Good one.
You've got an imposter.. look at the reply to me that says to 'hit me up'.
This has got to be one of the most unique vlogs on Hawaii I've ever seen! Kudos to you for originality and creativity. Never would have thought so much could have been covered regarding the local handshake but you nailed it. Niiiice!
Mahalo! I wanted to share my general observations on something we do here. Hopefully we can return to those greetings in the near future.
@@HelloFromHawaii I believe that was one of the hardest things for people in Hawaii during the pandemic. We're so much about showing affection through physical touch. It's an integral part of who we are in the Islands.
Lmao 🤣 This was too prefect. I moved to Hawaii 8 years ago from Colorado and I totally had the hand slap, fist bump method engrained into me. I finally decided to do some research since no one bothered to show me the official method and here I am. Thanks for the clarification, I appreciate it. No mo' fist bumps 😅
I love the points that you made about the loss of physical touch and closeness , in Hawai'i, due to the pandemic. I found your narration to be very touching, indeed!
Thank You for informing us! Appreciate the video
Such a great video! Thank you for sharing
🤙
Love watching your videos before & after I moved here! Great energy 🤙🏼
Awesome! Thank you!
@@HelloFromHawaii thank you! A great influence for sure 🤙🏼
Great explanation on the handshakes.🌴
right on point!!!
Hello From Hawaii…how cool to live in Hawaii & have a secret handshake that only the locals know about. Your wife is so cute. You both look so happy together! Have a beautiful day!
🤙
This is funny. Your wife has the bro hug down. So funny to see her bro hug you. I've been living in honolulu for 4 years now. The fist bump is something I see alot before the pandemic. I also see the bro hug often. Nice video though. Very fun and funny.
Cool topic. It’s something I wouldn’t expect from a Hawaii RUclips.
The non-traditional handshakes derive from the African American culture. Local handshake is from the soul handshake. Dap, bro hug, high-five, low-five, etc.
As you mentioned, the traditional handshake is best for formal, business and strangers. Also works well with the older generation. Can’t be bro-hugging with grandpa at the next baby luau. And Grandma just wants regular hugs. Uncles can go either way depending on how conservative they are.
For different handshake variations, just go with the flow. Mirror the other guy and hopefully you won’t miss a beat. But it wouldn’t hurt to ask for a do-over. “Hold up, homie. Let’s do that again.”
Your wife is a master of the bro shake! Do women also greet friends in this way? It’s looks like so much fun
I've never seen women greet each other this way. More hugs and kisses.
Younger Seattleites shake hands this way, the way you initialy demonstrated, too. I love it, especially when the handshake is ... SINCERE.
It is a GREAT idea to gauge how you shake someone's hand based upon the degree to which you feel connected to them. There are many levels of formality too.
Good to know they do that in other places too.
@@HelloFromHawaii Thank you for replying to me, Chris. You exemplify the spirit of Aloha. Shakas to you! 🤙
This is pretty basic in any hood in the country
This video was so funny, because it's so true! Lol
Awe...what a sweet video. I am really feeling home sick. I remember during small kid time when I was told to "Bless",
It was a Hongi - Maori style then moving in into a kiss on each cheeck. I still do this for elders.
Very interesting video. You are right, I don’t get where the first bump came from. Mainland people do it a lot.
Got it on “bullseye”, but Bro hug is it (always) love freaking those out that aren’t ready 😜😝. But it always ends good 😊. Mahalo and Aloha 🤙🏼❤️🇺🇸🤠
🤙
This is so on point. Now please explain one thing I still don’t “get”, people here back their cars up in parking spaces. Maybe I am stupid but it is hard to do that so why do so many do it? Curious! Explain more oddities and local cultural mannerisms. I love it! You are the best!
So it's easy when you gotta leave!
That's coming up on a video in the (distant) future. Great observation. 🤙
@@HelloFromHawaii cannot wait to hear your explanation!
For certain parking stalls, it makes it much easier to leave the stall if you back in first. But even if that's not the case, the fact remains that you're gonna have to reverse either going in or coming out, so why would it matter if you reverse when you arrive or when you leave?
Yessah!!!
😂😂😎👣👣👣👣 great video,do more like that in Hawaii island 🏝️ life is way different from the mainland, trust me I know I live in Seattle and 🤷🤦 😆
As someone who just moved to Kauai, this video has been great. I work with some prominent, and very local community leaders, and have experienced the bro hug in interacting with them. Should I interpret this as a sign of acceptance and mutual respect?
I think it's safe to say that people on Kauai are very community-based and friendly. So the bro hug may be a sign of acceptance.
🤝
lol this is how people shake hands everywhere in the US it isn’t specific to hawaii
So interesting. Are there ‘girl greetings’ also?
I think the hug or kiss on the cheek is pretty standard.
Good to know, because I'm really awkward and a bit of a nerd when it comes to handshakes. 🤝
You spot on ! lol \uuu/
Very original content here! I can't believe you were able to make a video on the mundane topic of handshakes. With that said, I would disagree with you that the fist bump should be avoided. The fist bump was the default handshake, if there was any, during the pandemic. I think the fist bump handshake is here to stay.
I think that the fist bump emerged because of the pandemic, but prior to that, I don't think I ever encountered that in Hawaii. So maybe the fist bump is here to stay, but we'll see when things get back to normal.
Yep, fist bump is here to stay. Always fist bumping someone at work, church or wherevers.
So funny. I was just talking about how you can tell how long someone’s been here by how they greet you.
Agree. 🤙
I liked when I was a fed and where ever I was I would hang with island folks. At the DC meetings the island friend would give a hug and a kiss 😘. East coast folk would look at us like “what’s what that, why?” 😂 But we knew … 🌴🌴.
😆
you should do a couple video on other greeting.
I've been thinking about it. 😆
😆😆😆😆🤣🙃😂 TRUE STORY THAT'S HOW I'VE ALWAYS SHOOK HANDS, IT'S LETTING THE OTHER GUYS KNOW THAT YOU RESPECT THEM 💯 AND THAT WE ARE COOL WITH EACH other, Yuup I'm a hugger pat on the back kinda of a guy 😂
Tanzania has a lot of fancy, different handshakes too
🤙
Havnt done it like that with a wahine yet (shake & hug)
You forgot the creepy and uncomfortable handshake. You refuse to let go at the end and keep tightening the grip as your friend tries everything to get away.
Always good for a laugh.
😂😂😂🤣 true story
😆
I like it's how we Hispanics shake hands
Bra this is funny, I always snap after shaking
😂
Stranger especially not from here, traditional. We never did the shoulder bump. The hand grasp is true. The shoulder bump originated from the popolos. Not us. When greeting opposite sex always customary kiss on the cheek.
Been doing both local ones all my life here in Northern California. No bump. Yuck
You do it unconsciously? Or subconsciously?
Subconsciously. 😆
COVID was hard no hugs , handshakes even fist bumps. First question from friends and relatives- Vaccinated?? Okay then give me a hug!
Yeah, it may be like that for a while. Hopefully we can get back to greeting each other the ol' way. 🤙
That's a lot of info...
I've had time to think about this 😆
@@HelloFromHawaii Apparently!
I don't recommend the "collapse" hand shake. When someone does the standard hand shake, I hold on and then fall to the ground like a faint. No one ever finds it funny, but I still do it.
Girls just give hugs 😅 No need to figure out what handshake to give 🤔
This is how black guys and basketball players shake hands all over the mainland
Yup, very common way to shake hands on the mainland. I’m almost sure that it started there before migrating to Hawaii.
There are a lot of guys everywhere who don't know how to do a proper traditional handshake and they end up squeezing my fingers, so there is no way to squeeze back. There are other assholes who want to give the iron squeeze and knowt let go and I am still pretty strong. They don't understand firm.
Germans shake hands very firmly. Often it cut off my finger circulation!
I know some people with the iron squeeze. Very awkward. 😆
Don't' forget if your a guy and giving a handshake to a female make sure its traditional and soft grip not the bro handshake now.
😆
Sadly, a good way to spread Covid...
