  • The Hawaii handshake. It's a way that guys greet each other in Hawaii. I never noticed the way locals shake hands until recently, since we haven't been able to really shake hands in a while. So in this video, I wanted to break down the different handshakes we use in Hawaii, how to know when to use them, and things to consider with each handshake.
    Really enjoyed putting this video together. Thanks to my wife for letting me film us shaking hands. We had a lot of good laughs.
    Big mahalo to VH07V (Aloha Revolution) for sending out the hat and other apparel. If you're interested in checking out more local apparel, please check out vh07v.com.

      Chris, I had to laugh as I'm glad being an elder and social hermit. Too much mechanics and thinking when our there is too much stuff on. Sight, sound, observation, movement, angle, speed. Ho man, I thought passing geometry and trig was tough. All this going on for a handshake. My friends took me for a geek guy of the group but with the calculation and stuff going on, I think it's the other way around. Good one.

    Cool topic. It’s something I wouldn’t expect from a Hawaii RUclips.
    The non-traditional handshakes derive from the African American culture. Local handshake is from the soul handshake. Dap, bro hug, high-five, low-five, etc.
    As you mentioned, the traditional handshake is best for formal, business and strangers. Also works well with the older generation. Can’t be bro-hugging with grandpa at the next baby luau. And Grandma just wants regular hugs. Uncles can go either way depending on how conservative they are.
    For different handshake variations, just go with the flow. Mirror the other guy and hopefully you won’t miss a beat. But it wouldn’t hurt to ask for a do-over. “Hold up, homie. Let’s do that again.”

    Younger Seattleites shake hands this way, the way you initialy demonstrated, too. I love it, especially when the handshake is ... SINCERE.
    It is a GREAT idea to gauge how you shake someone's hand based upon the degree to which you feel connected to them. There are many levels of formality too.

      For certain parking stalls, it makes it much easier to leave the stall if you back in first. But even if that's not the case, the fact remains that you're gonna have to reverse either going in or coming out, so why would it matter if you reverse when you arrive or when you leave?

    Very original content here! I can't believe you were able to make a video on the mundane topic of handshakes. With that said, I would disagree with you that the fist bump should be avoided. The fist bump was the default handshake, if there was any, during the pandemic. I think the fist bump handshake is here to stay.

    • @HelloFromHawaii
      @HelloFromHawaii  2 года назад

      I think that the fist bump emerged because of the pandemic, but prior to that, I don't think I ever encountered that in Hawaii. So maybe the fist bump is here to stay, but we'll see when things get back to normal.
