Classical music is rigid and you can't go off into a meditative state which you can when you improvise. The state you talk about is what I go in when playing guitar or piano. It's like meditation, open to the universe, like something else takes over and you are in the moment as one.

What they are talking about there is a psychology concept known as Flow (so called by Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi).It's a feeling and a state of mind wherein someone is lost in what they are doing, but are at their happiest and most focused state.

Just read an article about a bunch of Juilliard grads ten years after graduation and what a rocky path they followed -- they should REALLY bring her there to do a masterclass on making your way as a classical musician without following the traditional path.

It's just artistic expression. Much the same way people shoot stills in black and white. I think black and white is much better than sephia. :-)
