  • I write various sorts of ghost stories, horror stories and weird tales set in difference places and times, but a lot of my stories are set in my native Cumbria. This story here is based on a real folk tale from the remote area of Bewcastle on the Scottish Border. On my mother's side the Goodfellows came from Bewcastle and Mr John Walker a "Scotchman" actually did live in Kirkcubright about this time and was a watchmaker and silversmith.
This is another story about a bad man who gets his come-uppance at the hands of the otherworld.
This story comes from my Cumbrian Ghost Stories collection. amzn.to/3cnlzG1
You can support me on Patreon here: / barcud

Sound effects are from Ghost Hack Trepidation Pack and others from Freesound.org. Thank you!

On the day of reckoning, St. Steven’s Day a year later, our self-centered hero notes:
”Mr. Spindledrift Goodfellow stood there… He … licked his lips showing his tongue and rows of sharp white teeth…. I was no longer surrrre he was French.”
    19:02
This story was lit. And Tony Walker, your reading (plus sound effects to boot) is exemplary. Thank you. I am buying you several cups of coffee. Artists like you deserve to be appreciated and honored.

I think Tonys channel is unique & his voice is very Northumbrian or he may be a Geordie ( born in Newcastle our main city) but its a wonderful accented voice with no overt roughness or colloquial brogue ( which is very hard to understand)
Tony has a marvellous local accent & easy to understand.
Whenever i hear a fellow Northumbrian on a channel, gives me a lovely sense of home &.comfort & belonging
Since subbing to Tonys channel a few months back, ive relished every story hes narrated, i loved the story of the chappie in the woods & the beautiful painted butterfly.
So many sub meanings in that story, some philosophical, some of ancient Pagan lore, others of a subtler meaning.
Thank you so much Tony, im predicting your channel will grow & grow like Jack's Beanstalk
    & its well deserved.

    Very impressive!
Like an old pre-Victorian folk tale mastered in “modern” New England pre-U$A, just lovely.
And by the by, I ENJOYED the twinkling during the ENCOUNTER- it denotes what one can not on a page alone, a mystical notation of the “two worlds” meeting which gives depth to the FULLY REALIZED audible experience; I mean you aren’t AUDIBLE are you, you are SOMETHING UNIQUE & MAGICAL, like a most current companion to the CBS Radio Theater/ SUSPENSE wave ilk- I personally, enjoyed the magical notation immensely & prefer the version it is included to one that assumes I just want to be only read to out loud.
We are in the 21st century, I say embrace the full body experience.
Just saying MY OPINION too. ...

    • @colemarie9262
      @colemarie9262 3 года назад +1

I agree- it was especially noticeable when he left that little bubble and returned to the rain and sudden silence in the backround. That was great.
That said, I do think that lowering the volume of the fairy noise just a bit would still be as effective for atmosphere, while being less of a distraction to some listeners.

Living in the far north of England by the Scottish border, France is a long way away. It's funny to me that for most English people France is far closer and easier to get to than Scotland, but to us up here it's a mysterious and distant land. Unlike Scotland. (which I love!!!!! Just been there. Going again next week! So this is not an anti-Scots comment. Heck I'm 78% Scots according to my DNA test). So, I wasn't being anti-French either. I like France a lot too. @@ClassicGhost I perfectly understood you meant no disrespect to the French. You are lucky to be so near Scotland! I live thousands of miles away on the vast open plains where the wind is constant, the sky is all encompassing and you can see for miles and miles. I’ve always wanted to visit places like the Isle of Skye, Fair Isle or Shetland. I suppose the desolation appeals to me but they seem so unreal it’s almost as if they might only exist in my imagination.

I almost enjoyed this a lot, no I did enjoy it. That would be churlish to say I didn’t. Perhaps then a few comments.
    1. Kings head in civil war times ? Was that a joke ? Not I think accurate.
    2. Fairies ? We see only 1.
    3. The Alexander you sort of betrayed him I feel. For narrative balance or comeuppance you had to make him rather nasty and you did that indeed you did. With his roving hands, cow theft and general low grade villainy. I feel you cheated him as author, I even think you might have when writing this cynically revised parts to make him nastier ? That’s just a hunch, but there we have it.
    4. Shades of pilgrim here, oh I love the grey folk (I prefer to call them the others or not call them at all).
    5. I keep iron around, plenty of it. Old horse shoes bring you luck ? Wondered why ? Nasty tricksy creatures the others are, best avoided I say. I’m not joking by the way, I come from Cornwall.
    6. When we have that fireside chat in those deep old tooled leather armchairs I will tell you ….
    By fir now

I was at Bewcastle recently and did a short video on my trip there ruclips.net/video/UwjLmGktZPU/видео.html. But there are no pubs at Bewcastle. In fact nothing but. ruined castle, a church and a couple of houses. But I must have thought about the inn name as a joke at the time. The story is based on a piece of folklore where a man is pulled off his horse near Bewcastle near a fairy mound and only saved because he has a Bible. That story was called The Bewcastle Fairies. I think. I have used snippets of folklore for other stories such as the Croglin Vampire (which is quite true to Eliot O'Donnell's story) and Bella Sheephead and Eachy of Bassenthwaite which are not really true to the tale at all.

@@ClassicGhost that makes a lot of sense, the story did have a lot of resonances and I probably enjoyed it more than my comment communicates.
Given the effort you put into your readings I decided that the least I could do is respond kindly with feedback.
I feel these days “feedback” is hard to come by but in reality and if genuine is valuable. These days everything is polarised, we love your work kiss or we hate you and your work, fascist.
I think we lack the Inbetween, especially someone as talented as you at reading. You also like I see to try out new things, again I think audiences should be selective and tell you what was good, great or maybe didn’t quite work.
Your own stories are good, I will try and respond on each. I like twists, I like the others and I like humour. The tone for 1600 was maybe a touch modern but hey.
I like the use of classic fae name, Mr Thistledown Gladhill and such like.
In fact other than I felt you cheated Alexander by making him more reprehensible than he started out, it was jolly good yarn.
Still I feel old nick may be up to bigger tricks than winning souls for eggs these days !
      Well done

Had to quit watching although I was enjoying the story bc the background sound/music that begins when the stranger/fairy is encountered. That is so obnoxious and repetitive I couldn’t listen to that ear worm any longer. You should have inserted it only for a second if you must do it, then have it fade out. It doesn’t add unease after that, only completely separates the listener from the story, not hearing your voice only wondering when the noise will stop.
