The End of the Golden Era | 2009 Doctor Who Retrospective

- As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. Indeed, the so-called 'golden era' of Russell T Davies' Doctor Who came to a close with a collection of Specials mainly airing in 2009, bidding farewell to the iconic Tenth Doctor played by David Tennant. So was this victory lap a good way to pass the show over to Steven Moffat? Or was it too bumpy and self-indulgent?

Look at Amy Pond as a deconstruction of the RTD companion; Instead of being her put on a pedestal for riding in the TARDIS, her life and childhood is ruined by the Doctor.
@@mayotango1317 She's the ultimate Doctor fangirl despite that.
@@PathsUnwritten No, that is Clara. Even Karen Gillian say that Amy no trust 100% the Doctor.
😡
Oh no, @Harbo. It seems you upset an Evangelion fan, @Breakfast King.
RTD deserves immense credit for taking the show out of its grave and rejuvenating it for modern audiences.
I’ve always been a bit biased towards Moffat’s series, but the RTD era is, without a doubt, the golden age of the show for most people, and the 2009 specials are a well earned victory lap.
Meh, the Moffat era remember that is a science ficction show, no the Rose Tyler's soap opera.
@@mayotango1317 that’s fair, I love both eras, but Moffat’s is more in line with my personal tastes. Lot of respect for RTD tho
Well he's coming back for the 60th anniversary season so...there's that!😁

@@mayotango1317 God, I am so sick of seeing this Moffat Era fanboy everywhere, shutting people's opinions down. Just let people enjoy things you tool.
I kind of like the idea of Christina as a dark reflection of a 10th Doctor companion or even Ten himself. If you look back at Ten's companions, they were all deeply caring people who - while not always as knowledgeable as him - kept Ten's more vain, arrogant, and vengeful tendencies in check (some better than others). Whenever he starts to go too far, they're the first person to call him out on it.
Christina is the opposite of that, she's got all of the drive for adventure and she's arguably far more equipped for it than the previous 3 companions, but she lacks the compassion, and would therefore simply indulge The Doctor's worse tendencies. She does stuff not to help people, but purely because it's fun and she's bored and lonely, and as such she acts almost as the devil on his shoulder. She loves the adventure and the thrill just as much as he does, but cares far less about helping other people. She's not evil - just a bit amoral, but The Doctor still actively chose to enable a self-centred, millionaire thief by giving her a flying bus, which seems very irresponsible, and is another early warning sign of The Doctor's growing arrogance and lack of regard for the consequences of his own actions in the absence of a moral companion. I think it's quite fitting that the following episode is when The Doctor falls to his lowest, with THAT episode's companion being the one to correct the course.
If we look at the Specials as a 4 part classical tragedy of the vainglorious Doctor being taught a lesson, narratively each of the first two companions facilitate his fall, while the latter two punish him for it and teach him the lesson, with the lesson basically being "doing the right thing is not always easy". Jackson inadvertently encouraged The Doctor to do the right thing for the gratitude and the glory, while Christina encouraged him to do it for the thrill, which lead to his fall during his joyride to Bowie Base 1. Then, Adelaide teaches him the cost of betraying his duty, and Wilf necessitates that The Doctor follow her example to show he learnt his lesson. It's all very poetic, and I feel like Christina DOES earn her place as a tipping point on The Doctor's moral decline towards the Time Lord Victorious, even if her episode itself is mostly skippable.
I think Amy Pond did that better.
Really great comment and analysis.
Your comment is so amazing.
I agree. I think Christina was a good character in her own right purely because she wasn't a typical compassionate goodie.
@@aleccino Exactly. She was a nice change of pace. I think people get so tied up in the obvious fact that she would be a terrible companion, and just judge her purely on that basis.
It was definitely when I stopped watching the show as a family. Grew up with Nine and Ten alongside all the CBBC DW content. Still miss it today lmao
I never stoped watch, as a fan.
I was exactly the same. I remember watching Eccelstone's doctor on dvd, then started watching tennants every week with my dad. The Martha Jones series was my favourite, and is the one I have the most nostalgia for. Voyage of the Damned was peak doctor who for me...
Me too. I stuck it out until the end of Capaldi's first season, but literally none of Smith or Capaldi's episodes have stuck with me as being just brilliant television like Eccleston and Tennant.
@@aleccino "Brillant television"? That is the CW arrowverse formula.
Yeah, doctor who classified, torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures were great. Man, so many good memories from Christopher Ecclestone, David Tennant and Matt Smith. The good old days.
In the scene with Wilfred and the doctor in the cafe place and they had the conversation
Doctor: I’m going to die soon
Wilfred: so am I one day
Doctor: don’t you dare
Never have I ever agreed so much with the doctor
I loved how big the finale was in main stream as well, as we had treats like the iconic BBC One ident and David's narration on the broadcast of his last episode, David appearing on loads of TV shows like QI and Graham Norton, and we even had John Barrowman make a song entitled " The Doctor and I" for the occasion.
It was also a big year for me as well personally as I was finishing GCSEs in secondary school just before series 5 started, so it was fitting that my year group were going out with the incarnation that made me feel cool to wear my blazer-shirt-tie school uniform and pretend to be the Doctor. Even my year 11 prefect tie was my personal equivalent of David's swirly tie he wore for the regeneration and carried forward to the raggedy Doctor's costume.
I love Wilf's line ":I'm an astronaut" he's soo happy he. finally gets to see Earth from space.
Wilf is one of the best characters in Doctor Who, I would not be against seeing him coming back even for one episode aha
The fact that there’s gonna be no more reviews on 10 leaves me feeling kinda empty, without a doubt my favourite era
You can fill with 10th Brand New Adventures of Big Finish, for me is working. They have many amazing stories and canon. Dalek Universe, with Donna, River... I recommend.
The Waters of Mars is one of the greatest episodes and has some of my favorite acting from Tennant as well as his performance in the End of Time. Watching videos about the RTD era always makes me want to go back and watch the show a fifth time
Wilf’s inclusion in the companion role not only allows the conclusion of the Noble-Mott family story, his being an established character means there’s no time wasted introducing him as a new character and the story can get to telling its narrative.
Think the idea behind planet of the dead mightve just been to have one last fun sci-fi romp with David before things get serious
I liked planet of the dead I saw it when I was on a vacation and taking a bus up to San Fran and was dropped off at a literal parking lot waiting for my bus as I watched it
I liked it
I grew up both the RTD and Moffat era, but looking back I'm definitely more nostalgic towards the RTD era. It's just a feel good emotional one. The Moffat one is more grand and big, but 9th and 10th Doctor feel more grounded and comforting for some reason. All the characters were well developed and felt more humane, the companions were more than just spunky young attractive women.
To be fair, the Moffat era was very ambitious in what it tried to do with River Song and her arc, I think that if you watch her final appearance and then the Silence in the Library back-to-back that they make for an amazing watch (I know that the Vashta Nerada episode was in the R.T.D. era, but it was a Moffat episode).
@@-haclong2366 I think at times it was too ambitious, I guess. It needed to be a bit more grounded. Moffat's era reminds moe of a big summer blockbuster which you can watch once, have fun and then move on with life. Where RTd's era is more like that feel good movie you still re-watch. I know it's sounds biased and maybe it might be.
Moffat wrote more complex women than Davies did. Davies' most complex character outside of the Doctor (who wasn't created by him) is Captain Jack Harkness and even Jack only has that complexity because he was fleshed out in Torchwood.
@@iusedtowrite6667 So you like the simple and normal Chinball era.
@@tomnorton4277 you have no idea what complexity means, obviously
I agree that Doctor Who was the biggest show on television in the RTD era, it was massively popular, BUT, the show had an even bigger audience share in the 70s! Don't underestimate how huge the show was when Tom Baker was in the role
But the show is worldwide popular in the Moffat era.
@@mayotango1317 not as powerful as RTD, not as popular either and I couldn't be happier than that

It was very much connected in Season 5.
But the world building of Earth, specifically The UK, is kind of not there compared to what was the marvelous world of RTD.
Everything feels a bit disconnected
I like how Planet of the Dead is the last time the Doctor can have a fun adventure before the final two stories, similar to how Unicorn and the Wasp is in series 4. I also really like the idea behind Planet of the Dead and the alien concept.
I like all Doctor Who, but the RTD era has my favourite Doctor, companion, monster designs, TARDIS, theme, titles, music and more.
However, the RTD era is undeniably the best because of the expanded universe and connected stories and spin-offs. Hopefully there is more of that in the years to come.
The spin-offs ruin the Doctor fact. He is the only earth protector.
@@mayotango1317 What about UNIT?

IT'S THOSE ALIENS
17:24 I don’t think RTD’s era is unintentionally goofy, it’s intentionally goofy. It’s part of Russel’s style to have weird gonzo alien, sci-fi stuff going on!
I think something that deffo helped with the Doctor's arc in this and is a through line is the value of normal lives and ordinary people.
In The Next Doctor we find out that "The Doctor" is actually Jackson Lake. An ordinary mane who came to London for the holiday season and who suffered an unimaginable loss of his wife being killed and his son being taken but who in his grief became a hero saving all the ordinary lives of the people in London.
In Planet Of The Dead my fave scene is always the one on the bus where The Doctor talks to all of the passengers and asks them where they were going when they got on the bus and who and what was waiting for them. How he kept their spirits up by reminding them about how beautiful those things are and how yeah that alien planet looks pretty but it has nothing that equals to the value of family and food and homes.
In Waters Of Mars he is put in his place over how he calls Yuri and Mia "little people" and how they have value. It's not about Adelaide and the legacy she creates but them as well. How in changing history he added more value to their lives despite him not seeing them as important.
And finally in End Of Time it's fitting that The Doctor dies saving Wilf. Pure of heart, adorable, ordinary Wilf. And how in the Doctor's farewell tour he does small things to improve the lives of his past companions. They may not make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things but they are that final gesture of love.
I also love how The Doctor regenerates alone in the TARDIS. No companion or anything. Just him.
Great to see the proper love given to Bernard Cribbins… he made the 10th doctor’s finale so perfect and attached to that history of the series
Good job on covering an entire era, your videos are always enjoyable and have just the right amount of criticism
We didn't know how good we had it back then, truly lucky to have grown up with this era and it will never be topped personally. I did like aspects of the Moffat era but it doesn't hold the place in my heart that the Davies era does
And you hate the Chibnall era?
@@mayotango1317 Honestly I haven’t watched a new episode of Doctor Who since 2015/16 so I don’t have an opinion. But the consensus generally is that it’s pretty poor
@@SamThatcher234 Series 9 and 10 are great. Just ignore The Chibnall era.
The RTD era was always the golden era for me. His era was the perfect balance of light and dark. He could be weighty and emotional but this was always balanced by a sense of fun and adventure. Yes, it was camp and sometimes borderline parody, but it was fun, and that’s all you can ask for.
I still lament the lack of use in regards to Martha and Co after his regen. Even if it was just one time stories here and there. It's like they were completely cast aside
I wouldn’t call Series 5 “the dark times”. That starts in Series 6. The darker times start in Series 11
I think a lot of people forget that to the 10th doctor, this was his final regeneration, he was about to have his 13th regeneration, for someone in canon who didn't live for hundreds of years it'd feel like wasted time, not only had his time as this incarnation been short, but his life in general was shorter than it could have been, he knew death was certain after that, no second chances.
It wasn’t until they decided to retcon that, also the fake out at journey’s end shouldn’t count since he didn’t change bodies. Honestly that should’ve been the regeneration episode so that Davros would have to deal with a nearly immortal Matt Smith, and we wouldn’t get the end of time. I hated the whining about living too long, when by timelord standards, he is more like a teenager. Plus only 6 years, and I refuse to believe he was 900-906 when he was Tennant since he was already 900 when he was Colin Baker. Maybe he lied about his age.
@@tgiacin435 then the tardis would’ve got destroyed so it wouldn’t have worked
@@chunglebung8988 we don’t know, but I’m pretty sure not everything was gonna play out the same if that was the case. And the Tardis is almost indestructible, if it was destroyed, the universe would’ve been destroyed. But it would’ve been better than the David Tennant’s farewell parade of death i mean the specials
“Get ready for the fast approaching dark times”
I feel slightly insulted, my favourite era of Who was Moffat's era. :P
@The Reverse Wait for the Chibnall era...
@The Reverse That's fair. To give some context I enjoyed Moffat's era more than RTD's (personal taste) but I'll be the first to say it has issues. I look forward to seeing what he has to say about this era of Who.
even if Moffat doesn't deserve all criticizes in the world being thrown at him, since he was basically just another admirer of generic Hollywood style, which isn't a bad thing, but compared to the golden age of RTD, his era is a dark age
"It's always hard to say goodbye to a sprawling era of Doctor Who...." Chibs on stand-by to rectify that
I want season 13 to be good so bad but I know it won’t be :(
@@lukesewell8294 it's the hope that hurts! 😀
I think you could argue part of the Timelord Victorious was always there, in the form of The Doctor's companions. The Doctor never revelled in his heroism and they never asked to be thanked. Maybe part of that was because of the companions; they gave him praise and attention and that was enough to keep the Timelord Victorious at bay at least. Just something to think about, I guess.

My ranking of the specials:
1. Waters of Mars
2. The Next Doctor
3. The End of Time, Part 2
4. Planet of the Dead
5. The End of Time, Part 1
The thing about the 10th Doctor in these specials is he believed his 11th regeneration would be his last which is why he breaks the laws of time in The Waters Of Mars, takes Wilfs gun and then throws a tantrum in The End Of Time pt 2, it's all based on what he perceives as his last regeneration
As much as I don't want the Flood to return, purely because they are a one hit wonder, I'd really like to see an episode where they do return.
At the end of The Waters of Mars, Mia and Yuri sort of ran off. And the Doctor did warn them that water waits, meaning any one of them could be infected.
Maybe not in the form of a televised episode, but it'd be cool to see that Yuri and Mia were actually infected, with the Doctor needing to somehow prevent it from spreading across earth
No Ice Warriors?
Russel t Davis is coming back this is a start of a new golden age
With the woke audencie. No.
Even though I like all the modern doctors, companions, and eras (yes even Chris Chibnall and Jodi), I 100% agree that the RTD era is the *golden era*
I still have my criticisms and disagreements but I really love how well made and well thought out this video is!
Waters of Mars absolutely TERRIFIED me when I first watched it. Literally made me cry hahaha. I also didn't mind Michelle Ryan's character or episode that much. I actually liked that she was genuinely a bit troublesome/criminal rather than their being some secret "good" reason she was stealing. Made her fun/different. The episode was safe but not terrible in my opinion.
It's a testament to Russell T Davies and the cast that even the weaker episodes of the 2005-2009 era were better than the episodes considered "stronger" in Smith/Capaldi/Whittaker's era. I really hope with RTD's return he can recapture some of that magic.

I love how they treat regeneration. it means something and is not just a gimmick
I always felt a bit lukewarm about the series after Matt Smith came in. It seemed like the show stopped taking itself seriously for a while, and it was a little sad. I mean, Doctor Who had comedic moments before. But after The writer for 9&10 left, it kinda felt like it was all too played up and goofy. It was a real tension killer. It felt like the main character didn’t even take the situations seriously half the time, even when he didn’t have a clear way out of it yet. It’s one thing to start in with the goofiness when he has a eureka moment, but when you’re in an ‘oh shit’ situation, it really kills the mood. Glad they fixed that later though. Even for a little while.
The RTD era is more chessy and corny, in the Moffat era everything is scary and dangerous.
@@mayotango1317 dangerous! wow! People constantly die on screen by come back again few minutes later, what a dangerous universe that doesn't get repetitive at all! all characters somehow get to live happily ever after one way or another. they also commit crimes which originally would mess up the timeline and they're instead rewarded for it. what a dangerous world, little clown
Jackson Lake really should have had a spin off comic. It could have been really fun.

I bet Russell T Davies would’ve written a better 10th doctor era finale if he watched a skillshare video on how to make a good episode of Doctor Who LOL. Another skillshare joke.
14:31 I'd like to say one: a lot of the astronauts accents kinda go in and out. Andrew is from the U.S, yet in the scenes where we do hear him speak, he tends to sound more British than American. Sterri is German, yet her accent goes in and out, with her sounding German in some scenes and sounding british in others. Obviously, this isn't the biggest issue ever, and as far as I can remember the other character's voices held up pretty well, but its a little immersion breaking when some of the characters can't even keep their accents up
Now we can get to the Series 5 bashing 😌

Tbh I think people are overdramatic in hating Tens regeneration. From a character POV this is his first time really feeling like "The Doctor" in a long time properly and he feels like he's in his second prime. If someone came up to you and said "lol sorry bro time to change your entire personality but it'll still be 'you'" would you respond nicely? The sudden change from reluctance to being fine with it after regenerating not only fits Smiths Doctor specifically but also makes sense in regards to the character overall. Its like when you snap out of a bad mood all of the sudden, the scrambling of his brain probably made him "forget" why he was sad (not literally but you know what I mean if you've ever been really sad or depressed before).
glad that criticism is fading over time

It's funny that I actually like Christina much more and because of her the episode. But really think Waters of Mars is a 20 minutes story stretched out, with not much happening or any meaningful dialogue.
I have a niece the same age as Capt Adelaide Brooke 😉
Next Doctor NEED to be ginger
As I grow older I find tin to be a bad doctor but in a good way
are you calling Matt Smith bad?
The golden era of the new series ended after series 5
No, ended with Chibnall.
@@mayotango1317 bruh you think series 7, 8 9 and 10 are the golden era
@@mrdr0161 Yes, I never was a Tennant/Rose fanboy.
@@mayotango1317 pathetic
@@altinaykor364 You're annoying.
Now I know ur jokes about going into darkness is probably aiming more towards eventually getting to the Chibnall era & I wholeheartedly agree w you that the RTD era was the best era of New Who so far but are u implying that the Moffat era was bad too? Bc if I remember u said u liked his writing in doctor who! Now I know series 6 & especially 7 were pushing mediocrity series 5 & the entire 12th doctors run was great (minus Hell Bent) so far this year I’ve completed my modern doctor who rewatch all the way through Capaldi’s exit (which is actually where I stopped originally Bc I just didn’t have a means to continue watching via streaming & such) so I have yet to actually view the chibnall era but have been kept up w what’s going on and I agree that that’s taken it so far into a negative director however I wouldn’t say Moffat was bad even if he was a little bit of a step down after RTD
The Smith era is bad, not the Capaldi era
@@HarboWholmes Nah - the Smith era is good, the Capaldi era is... erm... meh, I guess. It has some good episodes, but Capaldi is not my favourite doctor. That honour goes to Matt Smith.
@@HarboWholmes I would agree but I’d say series 5 was good & had smith at his best which was an eccentric but incredibly moody incarnation which best represented his old man trapped in a young man’s body feeling. I love smith as the doctor but by season 7 especially he was basically just a funny goofball w none of that series 5 moodiness present aside from in “The Snowman”. I’d say series 5 is bordering great but overall just good series 6 was at times great but overall was just ok & series 7 was a mess sometimes enjoyable but still a mess. Series 8 was great series 9 was cool until hell bent kinda ruined what it was building up to & series 10 was again good overall I’d say Moffat s best seasons where his first & last. I don’t rlly get the hate for bill & I counted on my rewatch she only ever outright said she was gay about 4 times across the 14 45 minute episodes she was present in but series 10 also has “the Doctor Falls” which is great
The only mediocrity is Series 11 and 12.
@@Blondie_117 What about Jodie Whittaker? She is a millenial parody.
Strap in, we're now gonna head in to the era of showrunners who want to browbeat you and think they're way more clever than they actually are.
Sounds like the RTD era
That’s more so Smith’s run than Capaldi’s, who’s arks are pretty simple in comparison. Can’t speak for the Chibnal stuff cause that’s when I dipped.
Grow up
It was actually perfect and later on it got both sloppy and Chibnall!!!
