  • In this video I'll be dissecting this steering rack of this bmw e91 2009 in order to remove the motor that assists the steering rack EPS, in order to remove the electric motor which is faulty and will need to be repaired, though you could also buy another rack or motor and do the swap, this are plug and play no need for programming.
    When removing there is a pin which we need to be careful so it doesn't get lost please do watch the whole vid if you are gona tackle the job and haven't done it before.

    First of all! This is a great video... Now I have a few questions. If I just want to replace the motor, would a motor from a different year fit in the same rack? What are the differences between the motors of the different years? I only see differences in the part number. Do you think it is possible to fit a motor from RHD into a LHD rack? The motor looks similar on both racks. Thanks buddy

      Hi there, thank you, this video was a quick video with not a lot of technical information, but was mainly to show those bits that can be a pain when changing the motor. anyway, as far as i know as long as it looks the same it will fit, the difference in years and part number don't make a difference unless its a radical change or model upgrade. there should be plenty of this on ebay. I haven't come across a lhd one or worked on one so i couldn't really say, but i would not think it would be different. In another one I actually replaced the rack, it wasn't that bad but changing the motor seems dimplier but it also has its challenges.

    I would like to know how did you separate the back part of the electric motor. In your videobwe can see it loosen but some how the screws look to be on the inside. Any chance to show how?

      I don't have a video for that, but i must admit the cover was very stuck and took a lot of patiences and time to separated by means of tapping and wd40. i no longer have this rack to make a video sorry.

    My e90 330d rack messed up a year ago I did the under body car wash thing and water went inside the rack.
    So I got a new rack with the motor on and now that racks motor has failed on me today after a few noticeable errors over the time but never this major.
    I have my old rack and motor can I take the motor off and replace on my current rack? (That motor is my original motor which was working fine anyway)

    Hi. I have a 130i e81 N52 (2011), I believe it's same platform as an E90. I've had the yellow steering lock with really heavy steering, I took it to an independent workshop and they charged $800 for fixing it electronically according to what they said. 5 months later it fails again, but the wheel doesn't get as stiff. I watched all your video, great advice, but I don't think I have the expertisse to do it on my own. Please I have one question, is it possible that the battery is in poor condition and this affects the EPS?

    • @DaringBeefcake
      @DaringBeefcake  4 месяца назад

      The battery can cause a lot of problems for sure, may be worth checking the health of it as some BMWs I work with have had battery related issues. Did you have the yellow steering wheel with a padlock on it. Usually this yellow steering wheel can be reset with an OBD 2 computer. Many charge large amounts for the reset but I discovered that is a simple reset, however you do need the obd2 diagnostics equipment. Though there comes a point where it can no longer be rest. Now if you have a the actual power steering motor with a problem it defo needs replacing. You need fault codes to see what’s the issue pointing at.

    • @rafaelortizdezevallos95
      @rafaelortizdezevallos95 4 месяца назад

      @@DaringBeefcake thank you for the response. Just the steering wheel, no padlock.
      At first there was no fault codes and no connection with the EPS. Now there's no fault codes either, "EPS module historic fault code" they said. Such a shame that theese parts get faulty out of nowhere, even with good preventive mantainance of the car...
      If you may, what's a fair price for a new module/ whole EPS? I'll try and negotiate bc they want to charge $2k lol

    • @DaringBeefcake
      @DaringBeefcake  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi, a new EPS from BMW is very expensive I had 2 which failed and I actually had one repaired for £500 pounds, had to remove the motor send it off and refit took a while as its a bit tricky, but i thought it needed to be programmed, so getting it repaired would mean same motor no programing, having said that, the next one I bought was second hand ebay, it was the entire rack including track rod ends, it was easier to do it that way once I found no programing was needed, but the fault codes need to be deleted. So what they are charging if its for a new EPS might be about right. of course it also depends on the hourly rate they charge but you could try to negotiate a little. @@rafaelortizdezevallos95

    Got a replacement rack with motor, motor came out fine but motor on the car is not playing ball it's siezed solid in the rack, have destroyed some of the motors casing already trying to remove, thought it would be an easy job seeing how easy the donor motor came off. Gave up for today will try again tomorrow

    My 2011 E92 steering started to feel extremely loose and wobbly. I’m quite sure it has nothing to do with the suspension, but with the steering rack itself. Is loose and wobbly steering a sign of a broken electric motor of the steering rack?

    • @DaringBeefcake
      @DaringBeefcake  7 месяцев назад

      loose and wobbly does not sound to me like an issue with the electric motor but rather steering column or antiroll bar bushes and links, an electric motor fails and then its hard as a rock to turn the steering..

    Hi e90 eps steering rack removed after repaired and install after dsc brake light came on status why ???

    • @DaringBeefcake
      @DaringBeefcake  2 года назад

      Well am not sure why that’s on, but has the motor been fitted properly, I ask because it happen to me that I didn’t fit the motor back correctly and has steering angle sensor fault codes, so this motor is some how connected to the whole system which makes us understandable. That’s why on my video I suggest to fit a second hand rack which already has a motor on it, but if you already done it this way then check it’s in properly with the little pin in place.
