RIP Rinat. This video inspired me to get my double bass playing together and push through a dark period in my playing some years ago. I still come back to it to get that feeling of inspiration from this masterful performance. Such sad news to hear of his passing. He played his way right off the end of the fingerboard. RIP
Rinat Ibragomov is the best double bassist in the world man...He plays so clean,techically perfect and with too much emotions..This masterpiece sounds the best when Rinat plays it...It plays Therie Barbee and Gary Karr very good too,but this is something else...

Odon started with that expression of soloing over a youth orchestra. They were quite in pitch, but sluggish, often late, and being so inexperienced, played it far away from Koussevitzky 's spirit. The conductor is suspected to be Donald Trump. Odon got so distracted that he made a mistake right at the beginning at 55 seconds. While Rinat was impecable and Miriam Leskis on the piano seems to understand Koussevitzky quite well, which made it easier (or less difficult) for Rinat to enjoy it, as it is clear that he was really resonant with Koussevitzky's spirit. Sometimes a piano reduction is better for the soloist, when less is more. Anyway, in my humble opinion, Gary Karr did it quite well playing on Koussevitzky 's instrument. By the way, I wonder who currently plays my cellos.
I'm always profoundly impressed by Rinat's abilities to bring pieces to life. I was never a huge fan of this concerto or Vanhal until I heard him play them, when they suddenly became some of the most moving solo pieces I'd heard. I wish there were some recordings of him with full orchestra accompaniment for this piece... an interpretation this good deserves it!
Amazing performance. I never know double bass can play so beautiful piece. My son play violin and double bass. I feel depress when listening to he play double bass. Now I know it's not double bass problem
Rinat's playing of this piece is magnificent. I love it. He's one of the greatest double-bassists/contrabassists/string bassists/ upright bassists I ever heard!
My favourite bass player by far. This is absolutely brilliant and beatific. He really knows how to speak with the bass. We as bassists are so lucky that Rinat decided to play the bass instead of cello. He always inspires me and is one of the reasons why I am playing bass right now. Rest in Peace Rinat🙏🏼

This man is a complete virtuoso. In case anyone was wondering. I've seen him play MANY double bass pieces on you tube. ( I love you tube) Note, he's not reading music in any of them. He has memorized all these incredibly complex, difficult pieces of music. I dare say, there's probably only a tiny fraction of even great bassists that can achieve his level of brilliance. Thank God there are people like Rinat Ibragimov. I am beyond humbled.
I like to believe that Paradzik didnt never played the piece before and was sight reading on the stage... probably not but it's still fun to speculate.
I'm a teenager auditioning for Interlochen music camp on this piece soon, and I wanted to say that I go to this video whenever I'm having trouble interpreting a rhythm or bowing. It's just so clearly played here and I'm happy it's here for me to learn from!

I have listened to this recording a countless number of times as I learned the Koussevitkzy concerto, and still, every time I hear Rinat Ibragimov's version, I get the chills. I have never, and don't think I ever will, hear a more powerful or amazing version of Koussevitkzy. Truly amazing. Rinat Ibragimov- you are beyond spectacular!!!!!! So inspiring.

Looks like I made the armchair musicians mad seeing as they flagged my first comment The most important lesson for any performer is that you are always there for the audience, not the other way around. The career of a musician is always one of service. I've come across many young classical performers who have forgotten that. You do find it in commercial as well, but in our genre those people usually don't even get through the door.

RIP Rinat. He inspired me to start again classical playing, after 20 years play only jazz…Now I go back to music academy master degree class….He was the biggest giant of this instrument for me…Very sad, no chance to see him on concert or masterclass or whatever….
@Shmaymay69 Taking a faster tempo than what is written isn't rushing. He uses the faster tempo to his advantage because he is able to take more liberties with Rubato and Ritardando sections. It is called being a good musician.

I agree 100% . Just compare the other great Russian (Gabdullin) and then move to Gary Karr. A very fine player but lacks the Russian relationship. I do not think that Kous. had Karr' s excessive vibrato in mind. when composing the piece. Maybe the easy response of his Amati is to blame .
Overrated? Its more Jewish the Karr interpretation and Kouss was more a Jew than a russian soo that's why Karr interpretation was more accurate to Kouss widow
In think i must’ve watched this video well over 30 times now. I’ve heard a lot of different people play this but whenever i hear it in my head its Rinat’s interpretation I hear. Perhaps mixed with just a little of Karr.
I'm guessing this wasn't in one take and the camera zooms in so the cut wouldn't be a jump cut. If they'd pasted two takes together with rinat in the shot, we'd see a jump between two postures/bow placements. Camera zooms into the pianist's arms, which stop moving at the end of phrase. We don't have a lot of visual information there, so the fade in to the full shot again at 2:08 is smooth. Could be wrong, but as someone with video editing experience, that's what makes sense to me. Doesn't detract from the authority of the recording though! Rinat is king. He can do whatever he pleases.
I'm suggesting that he may have recorded the one movement in three sections. I don't mean to insinuate that Rinat required multiple takes, no sir, but, you know, if you're recording a cd track it's common enough to record section by section, I think. More control to get things as well as you'd want them. I can't imagine any other reason for the funny camera work / fade-ins.

This truly reminds me of my orchestra days. I am amazed at how the bassist performs his solo without any sheet music. In classical music that can be difficult. Because of the tuning, his bass sounds like a cello. To play in the lower registers would give the listeners a chance to hear the variety of notes the bass can produce.
Haha, good answer, I do fully agree however, that armchair musicans criticizing the principal of the LSO is rather strange. I mean, I might not 100% agree to his rendition (rather 99.99%), but I'm not going to act like I can do it better. I'm pretty sure Rinat himself would like to do a few things a bitt differently, but it's a good performance nontheless, that I think most of us would struggle to match.

I beg to differ, I think the rubatos are very musical, and and phrasing along with tone is good. Audio quality is youtube though.
