No Milk Today - Stereo Mix & Remaster (Herman's Hermits)

- Опубликовано: 4 фев 2022
- New stereo mix and remaster of this classic sixties single. It was a significant hit and peaked at No. 7 in the UK charts. The years that followed proved it to be an exemplary evergreen - a song that doesn't get old and gray with changing times and tastes.
'No Milk Today' was written by a future 10cc member, Graham Gouldman, who wrote several 60s hits for other bands, such as 'Bus Stop' for the Hollies or 'For Your Love' and 'Heart Full Of Soul' performed by The Yardbirds.
The inspiration for the song's lyrics came from the English practice of milkmen delivering fresh milk door-to-door every day.
Gouldman's father, upon seeing a milkman's note at a friend's house that read - you guessed it - "No milk today", suggested to his son that he should write a song about it.
It was a common message the milkmen left, usually because the previous day's milk hadn't been used.
After seeing that Graham was not impressed, he explained that the absence of milk signified an empty house where love had departed. Only one person is living there now, the other has left, so not so much milk is being used. Hence "No milk today - it seems a common sight - but people passing by don't know the reason why."
"He helped me see it from a whole different point of view. Thanks, dad" Graham added in 2011.
Mickie Most produced the song just as he did their first single "I'm Into Something Good" that went all the way to no. 1 in 1964 . Most also produced 'The House Of The Rising Sun' by the Animals and Donovan's hits such as 'Hurdy Gurdy Man', 'Season Of The Witch' or 'Mellow Yellow'. He also went to produce Lulu's 'To Sir With Love'.
On Most's productions often appeared names like Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones (the two later went to form Led Zeppelin), Nicky Hopkins on piano (who played on many Kinks hits and The Beatles' 'Revolution') and Bobby Graham on drums (The Kinks' early hits).
This mix is includes stereo separated guitars (heard in the R channel) and drums for the first time in almost 60 years. Based a remix from the original 4-track which consisted of:
A: 1st lead and backing vocals
B: 2nd lead and backing vocals (doubletracking)
C: Drums, bass, acoustic guitars and bells
D: Orchestral instrumentation
Lyrics:
No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No milk today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don't know the reason why
How could they know just what this message means?
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know the palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen
No milk today, it wasn't always so
The company was gay, we'd turn night into day
But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up two down
No milk today, it wasn't always so
The company was gay, we'd turn night into day
As music played the faster did we dance
We felt it both at once, the start of our romance
How could they know just what this message means?
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen
No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up two down
No milk today, my love has gone away
The bottle stands forlorn, a symbol of the dawn
No milk today, it seems a common sight
But people passing by don't know the reason why
How could they know just what this message means?
The end of my hopes, the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as queen
No milk today, it wasn't always so
The company was gay, we'd turn night into day
But all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Oh, all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Oh, all that's left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town

Nailed the EQ on this one, better than both of my attempts, which were unfortunately blocked. Hopefully the same doesn't happen to you.
Still here in 2024
2024!! I love this song 💕✨
It's a good mix. However, you could tweek the treble a little and a little more base. Sounds better on SONY Headphones than on Bose.
Each day I listen my play list and there is this sont in it 2:10
Mam oryginalne nagranie koncertowe. Dzięki za czujność. Pozdrawiam kochających rocka. ❤
I'm listening to it in 2024

Me too 🥛🥛
Always my favorite, had the LP signed by Peter Noone.
@@tomc642 fantastic I hope you still have it ?😀
@@rosemarymurray8256 Yes, I do. Peter is still performing all over the US. I first heard the song in Europe as a kid. Some teenagers were having a party at night in an abandoned building as this song was playing. The music conveys a certain atmosphere having both major and minor modes. The sound and the lyrics about milk bottles bring up the imagery of a 60s European city. John Paul Jones, later of Led Zeppelin, was responsible for arranging the strings and bells. He was a big Hermits fan and a top arranger and session musician in the 1960s.
The 60's were sooo great

YO, MUY HERMOSA CANCIÓN👏👏👏
Great song by Herman's Hermits, well performed, superb lyrics that tell a story of love and life. These songs have, alas, gone with the winds. We bought this record and my sisters listened to it many times, beautiful song indeed.
In 1991, a couple of years after the revolution, I cycled across Czechoslovakia. This song was a hit and played regularly on the radio.
A great sixties band and another beautiful song by Graham Gouldman.
OUTSTANDING and forgot about this classic tune and glad I ran across it 🤘🤘
Wow it's imposible to hear better this song. It souds like a new song., but it has almost 60 years . 😃😯😄👍❤
It sounds great. I played over and over and over again. Thanks. I miss the 60s music.

WHEN MUSIC WAS MUSIC.
Loved the youthful light sounds of Hermans Hermits. Lovely to hear this remastered version.
Remember hearing this on the radio around early '67. Nice melody and the Bells!. "There's a kind of hush" came out about spring '67 or so.
La mélodie est parti, les "cloches" sont toujours bien là, malheureusement.....
Another great song written by Graham Gouldman.
Tenho saudades 😔😔 da minha infância feliz em Brasília 😢😢😢😢😢😂😂😂😮😮😮😅😅😊😊
It was a lovely time, with simple nice tunes.

You can always recreate that impression and aura by tuning to this channel, or clicking if you like, to experience the wonderful music of the sixties, my friend. I myself was privileged to be s part of it.
Oldie das beste! 👍👍👍❤️👍👍👍❤️👍👍👍
John Paul Jones on the bells. Those Led Zep musicians were all over the place before they hooked up. Love the Hermits.
great song, well-dressed singers, that was music with style.
In my teenage years this was my favorite song!..But in Hungary behind the Iron Curtain this song was played only very rarely that time!....And in Hungary actually there is an one party ruled dictatorshiping again!...I'm now 68 years old!
I think it's the best hit of the hemits no doubt about it
Me too...now ...march 2024...Still listening music and songs....❤

Never have i come across any other musician and singer born with this kind of voice.great voice to say.
If not for the bells, I would have paid this song no mind.
Because of the bells, this is my all-time favorite by this group. Love it to death.
I agree ! The chimes are a very important part of the musical arrangement !
Heard this song when i was ten year old, Still love it. Thanks.

Que lindo recuerdo, los escuchaba mucho, también hicieron varias películas, una con Shelly Fabares que trabajo con Elvis Presley!
olá por acaso você o nome do filme
fantastic sound!
Nice! Just what i needed
How time flies! That was one song from the Hermits that I loved next to My Sentimental Friend.
Peter Noon would come down and jam tunes after hours when my jazz trio worked on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines about 25 years ago...We'd eat supper together; totally nice guy. Also, when I was 6 years old... this was my favourite song.
Great rendering, sounds more modern and more instrumental! Nice one on getting ahold of the full extended version with the bells fading out!
Beautiful and simple. I had this album when i was 12.
Sensacional. 25/03/22. 17hs14min. BRASIL
