I love colourisations, as long as they don't replace the original. The only thing that bothers me is the overly loud music and the relentless cutting down. I don't think the story will be given any time to breath.
Right. I mean you have to include the calling of the Time Lords, the trial and the farewells to Jamie and Zoe at least. Not to mention the new regeneration. Even trimmed down…what does that leave for the rest of the story. 65 minutes!?? I just don’t know about this.
I think it looks better visually than The Daleks, but I’m very concerned about cutting 160 minutes of the story. I would have gone for two parts of 90 minutes each.
It's great they colourised and condensed a Classic story for New Who fans. I think next they should do something for Classic fans like junk a New Who story like they did in the good old days.
2:54 Josh's "wooow" can't hide his shock at the guy admitting he's only watched the Troughton stories with animations. And then saying this 90min version is his first "complete one." Dude you still haven't seen a complete one because this is 10 episodes cut to 90mins. 😂
I must admit I never watched the full story ever. I used to always fall asleep when I was younger so I never gave it another chance. It's still on my list to watch fully one day, but I may just save it for this! Thanks for the upload. Great stuff.
I hope you just meant to eventually watch all of it, and not to watch the full thing in one day. I think watching more than 3 classic era Doctor Who episodes at once is too much. Better enjoyed if split up, otherwise your appreciation for it is lowered as you get tired. With "The War Games" I watched on consecutive days episodes 1-2, 3-4, 5-7, 8-10 and loved it. My attention was held throughout, but I never saw it when young
Yeah I must say - I am a massive fan of the War Games. But even I got a bit distracted with my phone the last time I tried to watch it all the way through I’m keen to see how they trim it down. Also, I know Aaron Climas. Fun fact, he builds excellent full scale Daleks
I wonder if this was supposed to air on 23rd November, but when they found this new film material, they pushed it back a month to give the colourisation artists enough time to complete it.
I've just watched this. I have never seen this episode before. It has to be one of the best Dr Who episodes i've seen. Really exciting, fast paced and I loved the extra scenes the BBC added in. Gripping story!
Really looking forward to watching the new version of the War Games. I made a fan edit of the original a few years back, down to about 2hours, and that was hard work, especially trying to keep a decent cohesive narrative and plot. So much back and forth and padding. Thanks for sharing Josh!
I’ll just be the old person shaking my walking cane at the “darn youths” and shouting how things were fine and you don’t need to tinker with them like this.
Can't wait to watch it. This last series ,The War Games, was rumoured to be part shot on 'new' 625 line colour cameras which were being introduced to the studio at the time (May/June 1969), but it would have switched back and forth between b&w and colour, so they kept it as just b&w throughout. Also, BBC1 wasn't due to go 'colour' until November later that year, so it didn't matter. But it does explain why some shots in this series have responded well to colourisation. They have that extra clarity of the new 625 line colour cameras, that the 625 b&w cameras never produced, let alone the older 405 b&w.
The Daleks Blu-Ray included the original B&W episodes on a bonus disc, do we know if War Games will do this? or if they would include this newly found footage into the original B&W episodes?
The bonus disc on the Dalek Blu-ray was just the original dvd from the 2000s with a new disc cover (even coming with the same menus), so it’s quite possible they won’t include it.
Only just finished watching The Wargames a couple of days ago for the 100th time. I'm intrigued to see what it will look like in colour and the new regeneration, apart from that I don't like colourized B&W episodes. I'd rather watch Wargames as originally made.
Hey Josh, Great content. Good to see Crispy too. Currently rewatching the original - two episodes a day this week. I am looking forward to the upcoming version on BBC Four. Do wonder why they have made Troughton's shirt blue (and such a bright blue!) when he was wearing a white shirt in the colour production shots. Troughton did, on occasion, wear a blue shirt - most obviously in The Three Doctors but this wasn't one of them.
@JoshSnares Seems fair enough, given the criteria of the project. The brightness of the Blue is a tad distracting, however, it's as nothing compared to the blue TARDIS floor!
I feel that this could be awesome and I'm looking forward to this much more than the new Christmas day episode but....., I know there's always a but, I'm worried about too much being removed from such a long adventure. Thank you loads for the great updates Josh ❤🎉❤
Personally it frustrates me that they have decided to give the doctor a blue shirt. Basically that particular shade of blue was often worn in black and white recordings because it would look white in black and white without the glare. Yes, I know that Patrick Troughton wore a blue shirt in the Three Doctors, perhaps the thinking was it would add something special to the show because his Doctor had never been seen in colour on tv. However, in the Five Doctors he wore the white shirt, which is what it was supposed to be in the black and white episodes. I suppose it’s not that big a deal, hopefully the Doctor was changing his shirts on occasion 😂
I kinda feel like a Josh Snares “Who Wore It Better” special about regenerations for Christmas is in order. Fierce meets festive…? You’re the best, Josh!
The news of the higher quality film footage being found is very exciting! I'm really interested in seeing this one. I hope that they take care with the music score though, as I feel the one they did for the colourization of The Daleks diminished the impact of scenes.
I haven't watched the colourised version of 'The Daleks' yet, but I am interested - if only to see what it's like. All jokes about the attention spans of young people nowadays aside, I think people wouldn't have any problem watching the entirety of 'The War Games'. I mean, plenty of people binge-watched the whole 13 episodes of 'Daredevil' when it came out on Netflix and DW's eps are only around 20-30 mins each, so that's even shorter. Heck, my children sat through the entirety of 'Power of the Daleks' at the cinema, and that was over 2 hours. I don't even know how much you could cut from WG without losing the story, so we'll see. It will no doubt end up in my collection anyway. Ah, the trials of being a completionist....
Just watched the whole story in its 10 eps and it really doesn't drag. There are obvious a few sections of escape/recapture that can be removed so hopefully the edit won't feel too rushed. Definitely looking forward to it! I'm just worried that Troughton's too-blue shirt will be as distracting as Barbara's too-pink top in The Daleks...
The recovered location footage is amazing & is the thing I’m looking forward to the most! I’m not going to lie when I say that…I’m not a fan of the colourisations, & that I am worried about The War Games In Colour. I actually like the idea of colourising Black/White Doctor Who. While I 100% agree that some of the atmosphere & original magic is lost in colour (& that when it was made, it was filmed & lit in mind that it was going to be in Black/White), I also agree that Black/White television is a barrier for a modern audience. Hartnell & Troughton are my favourite Doctors now, but as a kid I hardly watched any of their stories because it was Black/White. So even if there is a loss in mood & magic with it being colourised, it being presented in a more accessible way for modern viewers is more than a justified reason why these should exist. BUT, I just think the quality was poor. The Daleks In Colour edit is now infamous for how disjointed & just weird it was, loosing all the mood & atmosphere the original had!The new music, SFX & dialogue clashed so much with 60s BBC Studio audio, I’m shocked that Mark Ayres let it go out the quality it was! Key scenes that focus on character, conflicts & arcs are just gone! Because so much material was cut, it actively created new plot holes. The edit was so poor, it makes Legend of the Sea Devils look like it was edited by the same people as Oppenheimer! And that’s just the edit! It’s so weird to me because I follow the colourists who worked on The Daleks In Colour, & I’m amazed by the work they release online. But The Daleks In Colour was so…unattractive! The colours were oversaturated to hell & back. Why was the Petrified Jungle full of lush colour, it’s petrified?! The Dalek walls being purple & yellow & blue & green not only doesn’t fit aesthetically, but makes all the Dalek Control Room scenes look like it was set in a disco (although some parts of the walls being red is correct & does work)! The human flesh tones are so inconsistent, sometimes they look normal & sometimes it looks like the characters have jaundice! Also, of all the things to not have any colour, why doesn’t wasn’t TARDIS Console green like the prop was actually? It is so obvious that The Daleks In Colour was rushed, & I wouldn’t be surprised if the colourists who worked on them aren’t happy with the end result. The whole end goal of colourisations is to trick the viewer into forgetting that what they’re watching was originally made in Black/White. I don’t think anyone was fooled by The Daleks In Colour, which is a shame as when I watch the fan work released online, I’m tricked with only a few seconds. And here’s the thing, even diehard fans of the original ‘The Daleks’ story agreed that story had a pacing issue. So after seeing The Daleks In Colour fail, I have no confidence that The War Games In Colour will work because that story despite being 10 Eps long is often praised how will it paces itself despite it’s long episode length. Also, The War Games means a lot to me & Troughton is my favourite Doctor & I don’t want to see his final story be battered by the edit like The Daleks was. I’m not a fan of the new Regeneration either. It makes a great fan video to be on RUclips, but as an official product I don’t like the idea of them changing the original unique regeneration for the uniformed modern version. All these colourisation edits feels like the attempt of turning Classic Who into Modern Who, which I strongly am against. (Also, I’m begging they don’t put Jo Martin in place of Pertwee to explain where she goes in the timeline. THAT would be Star Wars Special Edition levels of rewritten history.) Basically, I am all for colourisations of 60s Who. But it’s got to be of actual good quality that colour artists can be proud of. I find the argument that ‘the original Black/White episodes still exist & aren’t going anywhere so stop complaining & embrace alternative ways of watching the story’ to be a shallow argument. Just because this is only an alternative viewing experience (not a replacement), doesn’t mean that the alternative viewing experience shouldn’t match the quality of the original. Those who watch only the colourisations will not only miss the whole picture & all the character moments & original moods of the story, but also will probably look at the original story with a lesser regard because of the qualities of the colourisation. I don’t know if I’ll bother watching The War Games In Colour, because I don’t support THIS particular way of presenting the stories (P.S, also the new edits of Classic Who just don’t make sense because it’s only going to be confined to 60s Who. The Modern Who edits aren’t going to be used on 70s & 80s Who so why bother doing Modern Who edits full stop? You’re just gonna make new fans who watch these new edits notice the difference in atmosphere, pacing & quality even more so when they get to 70s Who with it’s original Dudley Simpson music, Classic Who pacing & edits that actually allow you to breathe. Also, if you wanna watch a cut down, coloured version of The Daleks which lacks a lot of the mood & character work of the original, just go watch Dr Who & The Daleks starring Peter Cushing. At least you will get a consistent viewing experience)
I don’t understand the fascination with colourising b&w TV and film. I got in to Doctor Who back in the ‘90s, and I wasn’t bothered by the b&w stories. I loved them. I didn’t need a special version. I suppose as long as they don’t start prioritising these cut down colourised versions over the originals, it’s just an interesting extra. I worry though.
I got The War Games on video when it first came out, and did enjoy the story, but even then thought it was slow at points. Cutting it to make it faster will hopefully not be detrimental to the story, and make it more accessible to more modern audiences. It’s also probably the only way we will get these done, as it’s undoubtedly really expensive!
Really looking forward to this, the colour looks even better than on The Daleks! I understand the worry with the amount being cut, especially after the last act of The Daleks being a tad muddled, but the War Games was never meant to be so long in the first place, it was forced on them by production realities. I do think closer to two hours would be better but they don't have unlimited time & budget. This isn't a Star Wars special edition situation , it isn't replacing anything its just another way to experience the story, I don't see how its any different than all alternate edits available on the Season 25 Collection.
In principle, the cutdowns aren't all that different from the omnibus format edits of certain serials the BBC used to make for repeat viewing back in the 70s - see the sixty minute edits of "Day of the Daleks" and "The Brain of Morbius," the 70 minute edit of "The Ark in Space," and the 90 minute edits of "The Daemons," "The Sea Devils," and "The Green Death," for examples. Judicious editing and tightening when putting together an omnibus has made certain stories better, like the 105 minute edit of "Planet of the Spiders." Unfortunately, the modern BBC and the production team has decided on unreasonably short running times for these colourised cutdowns, and, consequently, have had to be ruthless in their editing, to the detriment of "The Daleks," and, most likely, to "The War Games."
I’m looking forward to it! I enjoyed The Daleks, and I’d go as far as to say it’s the best colourisation work I’ve seen far. As someone who has dabbled in colourisation in the past, I’m glad to see the manual process is still going strong over that horrid AI generated stuff that seems to flood RUclips and social media.
I don't mind the cut down, but my main problem with the colourisations is the god awful music that they slap on top of it , sometimes so loud you can barely hear the dialogue. The music maybe needs updating I agree but it doesn't need to be this New Who inspired stuff, it should be something more keeping with the original .
Maybe they could edit down Disney Who to 10 minutes. I think that would be a vast improvement. They shouldn’t be using the boring usual golden regeneration effect for Classic Who as that’s a new Who thing.
Whilst some people will sit down and watch b&w material - many people will not. This venture therefore opens doors for newer audiences to enjoy some Classic WHO. The cut-down aspect is a little concerning. I know Uncle Terry himself said the story was WAY too long (not that he had a choice when writing it - he had to fill in 2x 5 parters that were scrapped at the last minute), but I am very much hoping they do a better job than with The Daleks, as it really felt like you were just scrolling through the story.
More exciting than a colorization (though of course it looks cool as heck) is this news of the discovery of 16mm film footage. Certainly (I hope) this will be included in any new BluRay release. I can’t imagine such a reduced cut of the The War Games could possibly work well. Two hours maybe, but 90 minutes? For one, it would be such a shame to see any of the bickering bitchy buildup of the War Chief and the Security Chief cut!
We know it had to fill in for not one, but two unuseable scripts. Hence the ten parts! So a lot of to-ing and fro-ing is essentially padding, so far as the actual story is concerned. Entertaining enough if you have the time. But not essential to the plot.
Can you put the link to the podcast video in the description next to the handle? It isn't a big deal or anything but it I think it would make more sense
At £20 and no inclusion (never-ending a new restoration):of the original full version I'll be skipping this release. Will get around to watching this when it inevitably turns up on the Season 6 boxed set.
you cant cut these story's that much there multi part maybe half so 5 episodes but one mini episode cant work and the recolouring is ,well harsh im not sure what there on but wow like whats with vivid blue shirt for ? why is it new regeneration fx ?
Would not trust this current team as far as I could throw them. The colourised Daleks was cut ribbons and full of over-loud 'music'. I dare say they'll make a travesty of this, too -probably trying to drag classic stories down to the level of dross they've been producing for the last few years to make themselves look better..
The more I hear people discussing this serial, the more it feels like I'm the only Whovian who thinks that The War Games does drag. I'm really looking forwards to this version.
See I always feel very mixed on these because I'm actually very passionate about colorizations, but I really don't like the colors they use. I can't really describe it, but I just feel it looks wrong and takes all the excitement out for me. I feel the colors are wrong, and they should try to make it more realistic. That's just me though.
I despise colourisation. It ruins what made black and white so special. It’s like what they did with the Star Wars films and ET. Absolutely ruined them. Hard pass from me
Of course I want it. But I wished they'd stop cutting these down for TikTok-ers attention spans. Get with it people. We have been searching for decades for missing episodes. Now we’re actively removing them. WTF?
I personally find it vandalising if young people can't sit through 10 parts of 25 minute black and white episodes then that's tough luck on them go watch NuWho not our fault if you young people are too impatient leave our classics alone.
Josh uploaded on a Wednesday. I don't know if I can cope with this massive change 😂
It’s like when they moved Doctor Who to Wednesdays in the JNT era! 😂
It’s only a once off! Haha
I love colourisations, as long as they don't replace the original. The only thing that bothers me is the overly loud music and the relentless cutting down. I don't think the story will be given any time to breath.

@@timelordvictorious They're changing the regeneration
It's a good thing the original is still available then
When have they ever replaced the original? Why is is a worry? Where’s the precedent in Who?
I think it looks better visually than The Daleks, but I’m very concerned about cutting 160 minutes of the story. I would have gone for two parts of 90 minutes each.

Small world, I know Aaron too! Such a genuinely nice guy. By pure coincidence, I saw him on the day the War Games announcement was made.
Lovely stuff! I've done some of the new FX for the colourisation - including what I believe is the very first shot...
Exciting!! Can’t wait to see your work :)
Editing is one of the most important and also difficult things to do.
Very very few people are any good at it.
I hope this is a yearly thing from now on, I would love a colorized version of the Aztecs

The War Games is one of the best story arcs, and to cut ANY content is sacrilege.

Hi josh love your prequel to dark master plan
Yeah 100%
“it doesn’t really drag at 10 parts” wow okay josh is clearly a lot more patient than i am, i find the war games painfully slow
I’m insane so… haha
@f4rr3r I totally disagree. I don't find it painfully slow at all.
Might this be an indication that Season Six is coming soon in The Collection box sets?
Probably not - but it would be nice!
I miss "how could I possibly forget that"...
I really should bring that back haha
Oh it’ll definitely be in the collection - surely!
Rewatched the original and really enjoyed it, pleased to see it in colour and enhanced but concerned as to how much they have had to remove 😎😵👍
We know it had to fill in for not one, but two unuseable scripts. Hence the ten parts! So a lot of to-ing and fro-ing is essentially padding, so far as the actual story is concerned. Entertaining enough if you have the time. But not essential to the plot.
They cut over 60% of the run time. Do you genuinely think all of that was just padding? @@spiralx6249
Who's studio is this?
I’m not an enormous fan of the cut down stories, but in the case of the war games, they could edit out the Mexican accent!
Can you put the link to the podcast video in the description next to the handle? It isn't a big deal or anything but it I think it would make more sense
Done!

WEDNESDAY!?! mADNESS
just a little bonus one 😎 Sundays are still the normal!!
At £20 and no inclusion (never-ending a new restoration):of the original full version I'll be skipping this release. Will get around to watching this when it inevitably turns up on the Season 6 boxed set.
Never-ending? Bloody predictive text.
you cant cut these story's that much there multi part maybe half so 5 episodes but one mini episode cant work and the recolouring is ,well harsh im not sure what there on but wow like whats with vivid blue shirt for ? why is it new regeneration fx ?
I’m more worried they’ll botch the editing like they did with The Daleks in Color. I’m really hoping they’ll make the editing not noticeable
They won't RTD is too much of a narcissist.
Hard pass from me
I’ve got no problem with them as long as they don’t ever replace the original.
Of course I want it. But I wished they'd stop cutting these down for TikTok-ers attention spans. Get with it people.
We have been searching for decades for missing episodes. Now we’re actively removing them. WTF?
All the episodes still exist, you get rhat right. It's just an alternate version to watch. Like the 4 different versions of some 7th doc stories!
It’s more the cost of colorizing all 10 episodes. The modern viewers angle is just the public excuse.
I personally find it vandalising if young people can't sit through 10 parts of 25 minute black and white episodes then that's tough luck on them go watch NuWho not our fault if you young people are too impatient leave our classics alone.
I’m not an enormous fan of the cut down stories, but in the case of the war games, they could edit out the Mexican accents!
