Hello Vanessa - greetings from Poland. What a wonderful video. Red Kites, Ducks/Ducklings, Fabulous bird song. Superb camera work - bravo. The mindful cruise was very pleasant. Extremely relaxing. Thanks so much
The head of that red kite looks so much like a bald eagle, oh my word, how impressive, with the female larger than the male in both cases. With bald eagles, the female's call is lower pitched than the male's. Might be for red kites too? Fantastic duckling video! And the Merganser near the end is stupendous. Thank you so much!
Fabulous video the best yet. So many different birds and waterfowl. When you get into the fens you will be spoilt for choice of birds. If you go down the Little Ouse to Lakenheath there's a large RSPB reserve a short walk from the river. There are Bitterns there. Thanks so much for your kind remarks in the video, I don't really deserve them.
Thank you so much, Chris for the kind comments and you do indeed deserve the praise! So far the River Nene has been spectacular and so, so quiet. Have you started your adventures yet? It is perfect cruising weather. I will look forward to the Little Ouse and will definitely pay the reserve a visit. Have a lovely week! 🌻🦋
If that pound was empty had someone left a lock paddle open so it drained......have you seen a murmurarion of Starlings and the amazing patterns they create......absolutely amazing to watch......
I walked the whole stretch and didn’t see any paddles open, but the CRT chap said some of the pounds just drain like that on that canal. I was lucky enough to see a murmuration when I was in Eaton Dorney and it took my breath away. Everyone should see one of those in their lifetime, I think. Have a lovely week!🌻🦋
We did the Northampton arm last year after the first lockdown. We moored near the river overnight, but someone left a paddle open overnight and we were stuck for a good few hours. It’s nice and clear water which is nice.
Well worth stopping at Fotheringhay, Ferry Meadows and Peterborough before going through Stanground Lock. Be careful when you go onto the Middle Levels. Lots of weeds and rubbish plus very few moorings or facilities. March and Upware are good moorings and once you go through Denver Sluice onto the River Ouse it's lovely. All the 'side rivers' don't go anywhere but are worth going down. If you moor in Littleport at the Swan on the River pub there are electric facilities as well as water. Not many fuel options! You can really explore the region; to Cambridge or down the Old West and onward to Bedford through some beautiful countryside.
Jill, this is all wonderful advice as it isn’t easy to meet many boaters that have done the Middle Levels. I am surprised about the rubbish; I’ll get my litter picker ready then. I think after what you have said, I’ll replan some of the trip to capture the best bits. Thank you for watching and have a lovely week!🌻🦋🌟
How lovely to get a comment from you both and I’m delighted that you liked the poem! I always watch your vlogs; you’re narrowboat royalty! Have a lovely week and take care 🌻🦋👍
Thank u Vanessa for a excellent vlog the camera work was first class 🙂. I enjoyed the show motion shots of the ducks and the droplets of water, l have never seen a red kite in its nest before but have seen many flying in Aylesbury and their piercing screech. Lovely cruise and poem to finish with. I thought it was usual that there was no weekend vlog but was pleased when ur notification came up, better late than never but worth waiting for😃👍. I hope u have a good week xx💜
Thank you, Simon! I struggled last week to find the time to put the vlog together; I blame the red kites for distracting me!🤣 I’m so glad that you enjoyed the wildlife shots; nature is providing so many wonderful opportunities for filming at the moment. Sadly, there is only one heron chick still alive in the nest, but it is huge now! Have a lovely week full of sunshine! Take care🦋🌻🌞
Thank you, Jean-Louis! I am so glad you enjoyed it as it was really enjoyable putting it together as there is so much to see at the moment! Have a lovely week and take care.🌻🦋
Such a fabulous time of year. I feel so lucky to be on the water. Unfortunately a farmer is muck spreading near me. Ahhh what a revolting smell. So that's not so good. Rivers are the best place to be right now. Oooh, some great shots Mrs mindful.
Like you, I count my blessings everyday that I have on the water, but I am very glad that no muck is being spread here at the minute! Poor you!😷 Enjoy the sunshine!🌞and thank you for watching!🌻🦋
@@themindfulnarrowboat Still a little early here - migrants are coming through and resident birds are starting to reappear slowly (meadowlarks are back which is always a joy - you should google their song). Saw Brant geese at the lake yesterday (they migrate through here to the arctic) and probably a hundred or so swans and a bunch of snow geese (all in the air and a long way off) No pelicans or whooping cranes yet though.
Well, I have just googled the Meadow Lark and what a beautiful song and bird it is, no wonder you await their return. It’s so exciting when migratory birds come back isn’t it! Swallows and swifts are some of my favourites to look out for here. Pelicans! Pelicans! You are soooooo lucky!!!🐤🐦🐧🦅🦉
Always great! The birding materiel is stellar! I saw a Starling! We get that UK genus here in the States, but what was really interesting was the Kite. Raptors are always glorious ... Your Kites seem much larger that ours. It is really neat to see them up close.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! It’s interesting what you say about your kites compared to those here. What I would really love to see is the white tailed eagle which have been reintroduced in the UK. I totally agree with you about raptors! Have a lovely rest of the week!🦋🌻🦅
Thank you for your kind words. With the wildlife, I just carry my camera everywhere I walk with Zephyr and at the moment there is so much to see. If you want to do vlogs, then go for it; the more you do, the better you will get. It’s a great record of your boating life to look back on. I’ll watch them! Have a lovely week.🦋🌻👍
Goodness me Vanessa, I went to school in Thrapston. You must have gone by the village I was born and bought in Woodford. It’s along side an old mill, with a church that looks like a miniature Salisbury Cathedral. Incidentally, locals call the river the ‘Nen,’ flat sounding pronunciation and not the elongated Neene. Further along as you approach Huntingdon it becomes the latter. Just local dialect.
Thank you so much, Project Waterlily! Red kites are incredible birds aren’t they and to think, if it wasn’t for re-wilding, we wouldn’t have them in our skies. Have a lovely week and enjoy the sunshine!🦋🌻🌞
Thank you so much, Ray! There is so much wildlife along the Nene at the moment and I am just lucky to be in the right place at the right time. Have a lovely week!🦋🌻
Mrs Kite certainly was beautiful....as were the rest of the birds, the purple and teal on that ducks..stunning. Keep meaning to ask if the loch gates were always all opened wouldnt there be enough water as leveled out? Or would it leak out somewhere? Also meant to say a couple of vlogs ago...that art trail was lovely, as were the gardens in this one with the wire figures and daffodils...thanks again for an educational trip, travel safe...
Great questions about the locks, Jenny! Locks are tight chambers of water and they are fed by their pounds of water, but as they age, they leak anyway, but not enough to cause major damage. When you leave a lock, you leave it at the same water level and some people don't close the gate behind them, rules are that you should,(on a canal) but if all paddles( the things that let the water into and out of the locks into the pounds) are left open then the water will run down hill and you will drain the pounds and locks above. There are different types of locks and paddles depending on where you are, and the rule of the river is leave the gates open when you leave the lock, but not the paddles. I am still trying to get my own head around it all and I've lived on the water for over three years!🤪 Thank you for your comment.🦋🌻
@@themindfulnarrowboat well thanks Vanessa...who knew that locks even ran up or down hill?? we dont have them here..you had me in hysterics at the guillotine gates when you were turning that huge wheel...cheers from the west
Hi Vanessa, great vlog. I know the Northampton Arm well and know some of the pounds can get low but I have never seen it that low! We would love to feature some clips from this vlog on our next vloggl episode, please let me know if that is ok?

What a great comment! I don’t know about the difference in red kites’ calls I’ll have to look that up. Thank you for this. Take care 🦋🌻
