Video Summary:
00:00 Introduction
The Oliva Connecticut Reserve was reviewed using the Bespoke Unit Cigar Formula, a quantifiable review matrix. Rather than a Boveda acrylic humidor, we used a Boveda bag with 69% Boveda packs for a period of three weeks to ensure that they were properly acclimated and ready to be evaluated.
00:14 Cigar Overview
Developed in 2007, it was shelved in favour of creating the Oliva Serie V. It's produced at the Tabolisa factory in Nicaragua using an accordion binding style. The wrapper is an Ecuadorian Connecticut while the fillers and binders are Nicaraguan.
01:28 Look & Feel
The Connecticut Reserve has a straight roll with a firm spring. There are no clear soft spots and the construction is excellent overall. Its colour is reminiscent of fino sherry and it has a moderate sheen of oils. There are a few subtle white veins and the aromas of the foot reveal straw, cinnamon, and caramel.
02:07 Prelight
The draw is ideal but it can be a touch tight. Massaging the head of the cigar will easily open it up. The flavours are rich and consist of milk chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon.
02:49 Tasting Notes
The first third first delivers notes of salted pistachio, brown toast, and grilled almond. The second third reveals coffee grounds, brazil nuts, and brown toast. The last third consists of rye bread, pepper, and liquorice.
While not overly complex, the Oliva Connecticut Reserve is easy to smoke. The mouthfeel isn't coarse, but it isn't silky smooth either. Consider pairing it with a beverage as it may be somewhat dry.
08:00 Burn
The draw loosens up nicely if it begins a little tight. Otherwise, the burn is impeccable with an excellent burn line and solid ash.
08:30 Overall Experience
The band is white and has a clean presentation. It's reminiscent of the Serie V but being a Connecticut, the colour scheme is lighter and brighter. The box is conventional and elegant as it's made from branded solid wood.
Expect to pay around $7 for a single whereas buying an entire box will offer a small discount on the individual cigars. It's a very affordable cigar that's ideal for occasions like weddings.
10:05 Pairings
The cigar would pair well with snacks. For a savoury option, consider pretzels. Meanwhile, a good sweet choice would be Liquorice Allsorts. Milk chocolate will impart additional creaminess.
As for beverages, we recommend long drinks like an IPA beer. You could also enjoy it with a Coca-Cola or caffè latte.

Excellent review! I really enjoy the format, very well thought out.
Thanks! Much appreciated!
I really enjoy your tasting and review videos especially since you review a lot of common smokes that are easily attainable in the US.
Thanks, much appreciated! Absolutely, we try to cover a broad spectrum of cigars for all budgets and markets. There are many wonderful specimens in the US market and they're often overlooked.
Bought one of these cigars the other day based on this review. I enjoyed every minute of it! Thank you!!
Hey Dave,
Very glad to hear that you enjoyed the Connecticut! In general, it's tough to go wrong with Oliva cigars, it's one of my favorite brands.
Rafael
Yeah, I had my first one a week ago and was very impressed!
The notes you provide in your review are succinct and what we call in my circles “actionable.” Decision quality. What’s more, as I’m smoking one of these now, I completely agree with your assessment. Well done, thanks!
Hey there John,
Thanks for your kind words and feedback! We put a lot of effort into making these reviews not only entertaining but useful and as you say, actionable. We've got a ton of other resources here on the channel as well as over on BespokeUnit.com so make sure to check those out as well.
Regards,
Rafael
I've just picked up a half box of these and I'm very much looking forward to trying them. I understand, of course, that taste is entirely subjective but for me, Nicaragua is now producing the best cigars in the world (that would always be heresy to some) with the likes of Oliva and Nick Melillo at Foundation right up there among the leading producers. There was a time, not so long ago, when you could confidently expect to be blasted in the face with pepper from a Nicaraguan cigar but often find little else in transition. Those days are long gone now and there is much variety and subtlety to be found. There are also a number of cigars which are beautifully crafted from a blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican leaf, the La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduro series being just one example, a fantastically flavoruful cigar!! And the price/quality ratio on all of these cigars remains insanely exceptional!! I only wish it was easier to get them to The UK without...well, you know what!
Couldn't agree more with you there - Nicaragua currently makes some of the best cigars in the world! All of those you've mentioned are great cigars, too, so you've got an experienced palate without a doubt.
I've not experienced it myself, but Paul Anthony has definitely mentioned the issue with getting cigars in the UK, and the outrageous prices you encounter in cities like London.
Rafael
I find your videos very enjoyable to watch! very well dressed man and very well spoken, my English can only get better...thank you C.P
Thanks for your kind words! We're glad to hear you've enjoyed our reviews.
Best,
Rafael
CP CP CP CP! The man, the myth, the legend! Always enjoy your videos good sir.
Thanks for the kind words, they're much appreciated!
Nice review. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you for your form!
The cigar formula? You're very welcome!
thanks for the great review on my favorite morning cigar.
You're very welcome! How does the review compare to your experiences?
Hey CP. Where can you buy this cigar in the UK? Struggling to find
Hey Sebastian,
If you click through to the written review (bespokeunit.com/articles/cigars/oliva-connecticut-reserve/) we have a link to a suggested retailer that ships internationally however import taxes are a concern (especially in the UK, as you likely already know). The ones CP reviewed here I believe were purchased in the US but dropped off with him while Paul was visiting in France.
Rafael
Good review ..
Thank you! Cheers!
Ive often wondered did you put that wall paper up? Love the decor
Thanks! It was actually like that when CP got there!
The one I just smoked was unpleasantly bitter. The nicest thing I can say about it so far is "This will age beautifully."
That's disappointing to hear but not absolutely surprising. How were you storing them prior to smoking? Or did you light one up soon after purchase? Curious about your experience.
Rafael
its a quality cigar but its also very beautiful as well
Agreed! Oliva is quality through and through.
Rafael
Just sub'd thany you i smoked my first one during this review
Thanks for the sub! What did you think of this Oliva?
Rafael
You smelled all that?! Wow
Its a verry good sigar for the price..
I agree! You can often find smaller packs of these for sale online, though even at MSRP I'd say they're worth the money.
Rafael
We definitely have licorice stateside. I assume you mean black and not red
I believe that CP was referring to Bassett's Liquorice Allsorts, which is a British confectionary from Sheffield. Of course, it would go well with other liquorice-based sweets, too!
@@Bespokeunit I need to work on my listening skills.
@@loganphillips5935 No worries! It's probably a bit obscure for people outside the USA so it's perfectly understandable that you assumed he was referring to plain ol' liquorice.
Your accent makes every cigar sound good man lol. You can review a white owl but the way you review it I’ll buy it 🥃🙏🏻👊🏻
Many thanks! It's more that the cigars are great that makes it easy to sound good.
Rafael
@@Bespokeunit I agree my friend. You really do have the best reviews hands down. I’m smoking the Olivia White reserva now, you are spot on with the flavors
