Holy cow... Someone actually explaining the mindset I have when driving my miata in traffic/freeways. AWESOME!!!!!
EXACTLY. I've got a '99 NB and I'm watching this thinking, "Every single word of this applies to driving a Miata."
SAME!
Spot on ! I' have a 99 NB and this applies to a Miata also! I use to have a black NA and people kept running into it a low speeds because they couldn't see me. Dolts!!
Should be the mindset when driving ALL cars no matter the visibility and size.
@@Timithos forreal they relate cause they drive a miata and are forced to learn it. BUt in reality. WE ALL SHOULD BE DOING it.
Notice how often the right lane is empty. People don’t know how to drive
Yeah a lot of SLC drivers love to just flood all lanes in general. Makes my parts delivery job fun.
American freeway videos stress me out. In the UK and Eurpoe lane discipline is a pretty big deal.
Gerard Montgomery it's a big deal to me too, makes living in this stupid country hard.
One of the perks of driving in NJ, the right lane is usually wide open like this.

Best real world review of the Lotus Elise! I miss mine. The best part is the MOMO tiny steering wheel and the feeling you get from steering while taking corners! Otherwise highway and city driving is stressful due to constantly trying to avoid other blinded or about to blind you drivers of giant 4 wheelers. “Hello SUVs, I am not you” haha best quote of the week!
I want one I don't care how impractical it can be for daily driving, I drive a Miata and hardly even move anything in it so I know I wouldn't even be bothered by the Elise/Exige. I've been in love with this car since I was a kid.
The car chess comment is spot on.
John I think driving a small car really makes you start thinking this way. A nice perk to gain.
I've only ever driven small cars and can totally relate to that. I hate feeling stuck on the highway. Then again you don't want to overdo it as people can easily miss you coming up on their passenger's side.
Here's the thing, the Elise is so much better with the top off. Never drove with mine on unless it was raining or about to rain.
And the best mod _ever_ for the Elise were the Multivex convex mirrors. They completely fit over the side mirrors so you could see almost everything to the sides. Unfortunately, they went out of business years ago. But even some kind of inexpensive small stick on convex mirror would help greatly.
And it's true, the best way to drive an Elise is like you're on a motorcycle where everyone is trying to kill you. Because they are, since they can't see you.
Yep. I have a little convex mirror stuck onto both my side mirrors. I'm not sure why they're not on every car from the factory.
Mamo thinking about buying a one owner with 50,000 miles. Any concerns or questions I should have for 50,000 mileage and any clue how long these clutches last with regular spirited driving because I do not feel like replacing the clutch right away like I had to in my other car
Same here. My roof is off 95% of the time. She rarely goes out in the rain.
2005 elise owner for the last 5 years chiming in. Brilliant video. I too bought a ~60k high mileage elise with the notion of keeping it a "driver's car" and not a garage queen. 1-2 track days and 1-2 autox a year for me with a base model '05 and REV300 (which I added just a year ago). One thing that took me a couple of years to notice that I've never seen anyone mention about the elise: it has a *digital stall converter* coded into the ECU. On nice days, I commute it 20 miles from the suburb into Seattle, a commute most would think is insane for such a car (as you alluded to). What you might not realize, is that if you leave it in first and take your foot off the gas... the car will not stall. It will climb a 30% grade incline on idle... it adds gas to keep the car rolling! Never heard of another manual that does that. In practical terms, it means you can idle in first in stop and go traffic *very* slowly, and prevent and lot of neutral to first shifts, saving your feet countless shifts. It will even push second gear pretty well on a flat surface. Regarding the BOE REV300 supercharger: if you love autoX, don't get it. If you're more a track day and road driving guy, get it. Amazing torque add... 6th behaves like 4th gear, 4th like 2nd, 1st is unruly, etc. I've watched all your previous coverage of the elise and I wish you many many years of enjoyed ownership!
Excellent video, Todd. As an MX-5 daily driver I understand small car commuting issues. The Elise is one of my hero cars and I am glad to see it consistently putting a smile on your face. Keep up the good work!
Matthew Gaither same here. I love my MX-5 daily driver! We also have a 2005 Lotus Elise (yellow & hard top like this video) and 2016 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, and they share so many similarities. Totally on point about most people getting out of your way other than big trucks!
samo980 which of the three is the most fun and which would u rather have?
the size of that jacked up f250 or what ever it was next to you was quite an amusing comparison of size
quigonjay9 Seriously was! Nice coincidence, wonder if he stuck around next to it on purpose, while shooting. Also, makes you think how bad it would be to be hit by one of those! Looks like almost the whole thing is above the door height. :S
What a great video. I am selling mine today after around 160,000 fun-filled daily driver miles. And I know EXACTLY how you feel when you smile like that.
4:50 A wild E30 appeared
I came here looking for this comment!
Always good to see a car being driven like it should be. Everyone should do this!
sry brother, but car chess, is what we should all be doing ALL the time.
car chess & "offensive" driving is especially required when you dont have clear vision of your blind spots. -miata driver
And everyone should be looking over their shoulder when changing lanes. They train everyone to do that in the UK.
@@BlatentlyFakeName Not if you have the proper mirrors and mirror positions that totally eliminate blind spots. Obviously the Elise does not have that. Taking your eyes off the road to look behind you is dangerous while you moving forward at high speeds. Where I come from probably 95% of the people have their side view mirrors adjusted wrong. They drive around with 3 rear view mirrors instead of adjusting their side view mirrors OUT to the SIDE to eliminate the blind spots. If you can see the side of your car when you look into your side view mirror, your mirror is adjusted WRONG.
You can't cover every blind spot with only mirrors.
@@BlatentlyFakeName you haven't driven a car with the proper equipment then.
Todd: I'm a child in this car.
So true. I feel the same way in my Exige.
Totally!
Cutiee car. :) Lucky if you have one.
I've had my Elise for 13 years now and I Iove the way it makes me so involved with the journey. And yes, I agree its actually a great commuter car (when its not snowing). Lots of accurate observations from Todd in this video. The only experience you missed was the driving at night experience, its such a fantastic little place to be. Well done, great video :)
I've watched this youtube channel for years now, daily driving a lotus elise is the most Todd thing imaginable.
Having owned one for a full year as my daily driver in Colorado (snow and all). I agree. Vehicular Chess. Oh but that drifting and handling. Ahhhhh...
Can we get 3 year update? Do you still own one?
Still drive it? Change your mind?
“Hello SUVs, I am not you.”
So much love for this statement.
Brilliant review and love the "hello SUVs..." :D
Driving those type of cars as daily is a guilty pleasure. Keep enjoying it Todd.
Really intelligent reviewer, and thanks for reminding me of my great experiences with my S1 Elise - always aware of whats around you (tall vehicles can't see you), nailing corners, the basic interior, just so much fun.
I just bought my first Elise S2 111S, in large part thanks to this video. I´m 6´3ish and the only way I´d know if I could fit and drive it was by getting on an international flight and checking out the car first hand. I knew it was spartan and raw, and that was part of the appeal for me, but I´ll admit, rattling over tram lines and navigating Gothenburg highway traffic for my first ever Elise drive.. I actually doubted if this was such a good idea. My heart sank a bit. Then I broke free of the cars around be (mostly Volvos) and I took a long sweeping off ramp. The water temp had come up to °85 and I gave it some beans and holy crap, the grip! This was everything and more than I expected.. It is now on a RO/RO ship on its way to Iceland. Took me almost a year to find the right one, but thanks for helping this transition from a dream for me to a reality :)
This is awesome, - we're thrilled for you. Todd has more Elise videos coming soon. Thanks for watching, and enjoy your Elise!
Really like these long term episodes. I loved the FRS long term as well, keep up the good content!
Vehicular chess is a perfect word for it. I do this constantly when I drive. my mirrors are more a double check than a first check
Excellent video. I bought an Elise as a daily about 10 months ago. People told me i was mad, but I absolutely love it.
Awesome video!
I've been waiting for one of these ever since you bought it.
I'm digging the color for sure.
Also when you're driving something small like that you want it to be bright so that people will maybe see you.
You inspired me to go out and get my dream car, the Evora, and daily that, too. Now my rotation is 996, Evora, Boxster. Life's too short to drive boring cars. I agree with all your observations; need to really keep constant awareness to make sure nobody hanging out in my blind spots. Thanks and good luck with your Lotus!
East Canyon must've been closed lol I bet that would be fun to take that car up there
Excellent! I had a 2005 "Starlight" black Elise for 8 years and loved every minute of it - watching your video makes me miss it more!
Thank you so much for all your Elise videos! They helped me decide that I need to have one, so last week I took delivery of my 2005 Krypton Green Elise!! And I love it!!! Thanks again!!
I have a 2006 in Krypton Green. I had it shipped to me across country, site unseen and love the car. Local police had to inspect the VINs at my house before I could apply for a title. The guy was great, and thought given the size that my choice of "safety green" as he put it was a wise one. I fully agree - it helps to be seen in a car this small. The MINI parked next to it in our garage dwarfs it. Fantastic car, best handling I've ever driven hands down. Hope you are likewise enjoying yours.
Thank you for your great review of a small sports car. I know how you feel as I love driving my 09 Boxster S more so then my new RS5. Enjoy!
Great parting line there, Todd! I have to do that same thing with my RX-7. It's a very similar driving experience in some respects, you have to be very aware of what everyone else is doing on the road- because they just don't see you. It didn't help that my car is sky blue.
brilliant review! your smile while carving those corners says everything that's great about the Elise!
Greatest moment of this video: "I am not doing 20..."
Such a great video and great car! Thank you for this!
This video reminds me so much of my daily driver, the MR2 spyder. So many similarities. The rattles, the taking the long way, the car chess, getting in and out, the traffic lights. It's all why I drive mine every day.
Excited for this, been looking forward to it!
This review is so accurate! 😂 I always try and stay next to people rather than just behind or in front of them just in case they don’t see me! BTW I daily a FRS so we have similar taste in cars 👍🏾
I ran a Lotus Elise S2 111S as a daily in and around London for 2 years, and it was just great - only a little 4 pot, so economical, and special all at the same time
RS1 A TVR is really only for very very occasional use these days - couldn’t daily run one like you could a Lotus. So, as the 4th or 5th car in the garage maybe .... but a lot of stuff I’d have before a TVR.
Thank you for a Mature video on a Lotus Elise. Many others complain about their car, I can tell you understand your car. It is what it is, the rest need to grow up and deal with it. Not being mean to them, but you get it. Have driven 4 courtesy of Lotus of Atlanta at the Walter Mitty, beautiful cars, both looks and driveability.
Maturity-Schmaturity. Todd, you are living the dream, sir!
I'll have my own 'tiny car with an angry engine' someday.
Great video, it perfectly expresses how I feel on my manual R8... very involving, having to anticipate traffic, low down, and loving every minute of the drive. I daily it rain, snow, or shine, and don't regret a thing about it... would consider a Lotus just because it's even more raw and track focused.
I’ve waited a long time for this update. Glad to see it.
Get some Tillett seats, they'll drop you down to a much nicer driving position and despite the lack of padding, they are as comfortable as the Probax Lotus seats. Always good to see one used as a daily, I did it for 4 years in my S1 Elise.
Haha, "hello SUVs, I am not you." Perfect closing statement. Great video, keep up the quality content!
Glad to see your are enjoying your Elise Todd , I get the same grin when i drive my 1987 300ZX
I have always loved/wanted an Elise - and this is hands-down the best review of it I've ever read/watched. I am 53 years old, 6'0" tall and bought an NB Miata last year that I drive daily on my 90-mile round-trip commute (in addition to the occasional weekend trip to the NC mountains and autocross). I am really enjoying it - and absolutely EVERYTHING you said about driving the Elise is 100% true for me in my Miata! Getting in/out, ducking to see traffic lights, dealing with the left/rear blindspot (when the top is up anyway), etc. and especially the way it makes you toss maturity out the window. I didn't get a single speeding ticket in eight years of commuting in a base 4-cylinder Toyota Tacoma, but I've been pulled TWICE in a year in the Miata (got off with a warning on one). i just can't help myself! You're also right about the neanderthals in the Bro-doziers (diesel and gas)... they are the absolute WORST! I'm also a motorcyclist - and I definitely use the same driving strategies in the Miata that I do on the bike. It's honestly a matter of survival! Anyway, thanks so much for this review. The Elise has been just out of my reach financially since it came out, but the last of my three daughters will graduate from college in a year, so I may be selling the Miata and searching for a clean, low-mileage Elise to replace it soon. It sounds like it will be a very easy transition. Or not. I do love the Miata! The choice may be add forced induction to the Miata (and all of the other necessary supporting mods) or sell it and buy an Elise. We shall see. Keep up the great work. Love the channel!
Glad you enjoyed, John. Thank you! We hope you get a chance to own one!
Just a great video that distills the ownership experience of a Lotus Elise superbly. Todd, I'm going to go take mine for a spin right now :-).
Thanks for the video! I appreciate your approach. I can't wait to get one
I haven't watched this channel for a couple of years and almost forgat how good good it was. As always a very accurate and true opnion of a driver's car. Brave pill for breakfast commuting in an Elise. did tis back a few years back with a trck prepared Z4M Coupe. Winter always held a few surprises but I hate to admit I prefer the 3 series now and don't miss the fun one. What I do need though in a weekend toy like an Elise. Glad you fit in though as I'm the same size. A recent trial in a Series 1 Exige was a no go.
Loved the sportbike/defensive driving/awareness analogy. I ride a sporty bike, and driving my Miata I’ve used some of the same positioning tactics, because otherwise you cannot be seen at times by folks in much larger vehicles.
I also loved how you were looking all the way through that right-hander, just as you would on a bike!
Lastly, the way you feel about your Lotus is how I feel about my Miata, which is my daily driver, year-round, even in the snow. The sacrifices are worth it.
It really makes you aware of EVERY thing around you!
Enjoyable and to the point piece! Looks like fun. I usually bitch about the left lane passing, but sadly it’s the only one ever open because nobody gets the keep right thing. Sweet e30 at the 4:53 mark! Thanks Todd!
Awesome! I daily drive my e46 m3 and LOVE it!
I really liked this review. I have given hard thought to buying an elise, and daily driving it, but never have done it. Cool to see a guy actually do it. I love his comparisons. Will check out his other videos
Fantastic video like always.
It's crazy how much I've listened to you talk about this experience on the podcast, and how ridiculous you look getting out of it. Still, I wasn't ready. No verbal description could possibly do that visual justice. I laughed hard.
I really enjoyed watching this!
I can feel the fun and love he has for this car, remind me to get one of my own in the future!
Dang! you look seriously graceful getting in and out!! Never have I seen such a big person get through such a small opening with such ease. Fantastic.
Practice, Practice, Practice... it's gone wrong a few times too!
Completely understand the car chess explanation, I drove a Mini for 4 yrs and was on high alert ALL the time, great video!
Right on brother. I have a 2005 supercharged Elise and I just love it despite all of it’s quirks. I traded in a Porsche and I loved that car but I’ve got to tell you the Elise is a ton of fun and I never tire of the driving experience. Unless it’s really nasty the top is always off and for that reason, I run with the soft-top always in the trunk. You were right with regard to driving defensively much like a motorcyclist. My mindset is that they don’t see me and being so small they often don’t. I’ve also had the same experience with regard to the monster lifted pickups. Not sure what that’s all about, but to be fair it was the same way with the Porsche. Being 5’8” I fit in a lot better but you definitely work on your entry and exit abilities. Thanks for a great and very honest review.
I loved this engine in my old gen 7 Celica, especially when you hit that 6,200 rev point. Wanted to put that engine into an MR2 Roadster, but considering I totaled that on the motorway in a downpour, it probably was a good thing that I didn't.
Wonderful!!!😍😍😍 I'm definitely in love with this car!
You have described my 13 year daily driving experience to a T! When you describe assessing the positions of cars around you, that's exactly right in an Elise. And, of course, that's what all drivers should do. But they don't, so driving an Elise in traffic can be nerve-wracking. I commute daily from just south of downtown Denver to the Tech Center about 10 miles down I-25. Unless it's snowing :) I have never driven something so tire-sensitive. In that regard it's close to my shifter kart. i guess all the years of karting is why I like driving my '05 Elise so much. Add a TVS supercharger and your "best defense is offense" driving style will be transformed! Have fun!
Love this show, thanks todd, keep it up!!!
A good driver is constantly playing car chess in his or her head, no matter what he or she is driving. Years of commercial driving ingrained this in me, and even with high visibility, blind spot monitoring, etc., I've always got a mental model of the traffic situation, including predictive patterns for each vehicle that I might have to interact with.
I really enjoyed this video. I just bought a 2007 soft top Miata. I can relate to almost every comment. The chess. The noise. Etc. it’s also my daily driver. Thanks!
Awesome, looking forward to this series. My wife has wanted an Elise since I showed her a beautiful white one at a BMW dealer 5 or so years ago. She just let me bring home my dream car, an Aston Martin V8, last month so maybe in a few years we can add her Elise to the collection.
Best "Long-term" review of this car to date.....I live in Daytona Beach Florida, dailying this car would be a piece of cake!
Very awesome! Keep up the great work!
Awesome cars! such a blast to drive. I’ve done many miles in them and just love them
8:45 real counterculture in 2019, proud to be part of that team :D
I didn't know you were in Utah. Awesome to see the roads I drive all the time. This is the place to be.
Interesting thoughts Todd, that’s one thing I really learned from owning my FRS, I gotten to learn and anticipate drivers moves and stupidity. I hated being sandwiched with 18 wheelers and larger cars. Gotta agree Todd at least you can go to a Toyota dealership for engine parts ☺️☺️
Todd, you make me smile and laugh when I see you smile and laugh, because I feel exactly the same in my Elise.
I just want to say that I believe your reviews are very underrated.
7:16 my favorite moment. What a car. I would deal with all the negatives for those small perfect moments.
3:48 I have always wanted one, and passed on buying a couple when I could have. You just got me fired back up!
As a daily lotus elise driver i can say that traffic actually aint that bad, at least not as bad as you would think it is. The lotus is, once you got in, quit comfortable to sit in, but then again im still young. What reeaaally annoys me however is driving at night. The headlamps are far to dark and when somebody's behind you, you are blended through every single mirror because other peoples headlamps are at exactly your eye level. Another thing is that at least in my perception, it is more difficult through the lotuses mirrors to perceive the distance to a car behind you which can easily screw your outstanding diffusor (cup version) when parking your car. Not in parking garages however, because the entrances are usually way to steep so that you car becomes a swing. And by the way: you cant be not seen or at least heard in traffic because for the engine to run smoothly you got to have fun on the gas pedal. .... and by the way: be careful when driving faster then 200km/h on the highway because bumps in the road are actually gonna make you fly!
same thing in my cayman...their lights are brutal...headlights are too bright now...its annoying af...I usually turn my mirror to reflect light back
Fantastic review. I have an elise and everything said in this video is true. Yes everyone has to play chess when driving but you have to do it more in the lotus compared to a commuting car due to lack of visibility. But that is part of the fun and forces you to be more involved in the experience, which is the whole point of the car in the first place.
Had a 2005 for 7 years, daily driven and loved it. As far as headroom, I'm 6'2" and there was about 2" clearance to the soft top. Miss it, but had hard time getting in and out after blowing out my shoulder...
I daily drive my NSX with 250k miles & I enjoy every moment.
*more on the Cayman GTS too!*
Love that car, really hope he hasn't sold it...i also think it will be a road going classic.
I live in Canada so naturally we have bad winters, and I saw one of these being driven in the snow with winter steelies on! People with cars like that often have pickup trucks for winter. I personally had a Suzuki XL7 to keep my BMW 335i warm until the fuel line ruptured and I had to get rid of it due to Suzuki’s closure and lack of parts. But I applaud this guy for driving a Lotus in the snow.
I still daily drive my 2006 Elise - 8 years now. The review is spot on, except you forgot to mention passengers with gear, i.e., the itty bitty "trunk" in the back that will cook your groceries, books and whatever. T
hat said, get a set of LSS or whatever rims and get some serious rubber like the AO48's or R888's, and your childishness in corners will double!!
unless he gets in the wet with these or some semi slicks, on a daily driver it´s kinda stupid, you´ll end up buying two rear tires quite often...hell, my Vredestein tires lasted about 5000 km...and I don´t drive like a maniac...well sometimes I do...
I run Toyo RA1 tires on my NA Exige. Both on the track AND on the street, although I don't daily it. Having gone through about ten sets in as many years, I can say with some confidence that the fronts and rears wear at pretty close to the same rate.
This is how I feel driving my Civic Type R, always encouraged to drive the long way. Long live driver's cars.
Kyle Cook hi Kyle, I’m guessing the type r on your profile is yours? I had a fn2 type r and really loved it. I’m really tempted to get the newest type r but need to do a bit of research. Is it an easy car to live with?
@@jamesmosley1549 it's very daily drivable! If your local roads are in rough shape I'd put smaller wheels on so you can run a fatter tire. The 20's wrapped in 245/30 are prone to bending wheels.
@ 7:21, "I can't help it, I can't..., I can't go slow on a road like this...". Hahaha, that's how I feel every time I drive my 06' Exige. One of the challenges with driving a Lotus is that you have to be mindful and be nice. Thanks for the long term update.
Great video, and your face and your smile from 7:20 says everything :)..
"I can't go slow on a road like this, I can't be nice and be an adult, I AM A CHILD IN THIS CAR".
:-) great video, thanks. Keep it coming, , more Lotus experiences please
It's funny that you mentioned the horn. I was wondering if you were going to talk about it on a commuting description video. It's covered by your palms when you are driving so you can't find it when needed and then when making a tight turn, the pressure from your palms will honk it. It's a little embarrassing. Your car is quite low, what suspension does it have? A small stick-on blind spot mirror helps alot.
The way he describes looking around and keeping track reminds me of being on my bike.
EDIT: and then he literally just said, 'it's like being on a sport bike." Funny.
As a fellow owner, you hit the nail on the head. I - by choice - do not drive mine every day, though I might if I were younger (like you). I'm paranoid about driving in it in my city: stop, stop, stop & creep traffic and 1-ton pick up trucks everywhere. (10 point if you guessed Texas.) The driver of of the pickup (or other high vehicle) CANNOT SEE YOU if you pull up to the right of them. I have to be ultra-defensive, but then again, I'm the luck guy in the Lotus.
I commute in mine 2/5ths of the year in one of the worst commutes in the US (seattle). It's not as bad as you think if you a) realize the car won't stall in 1st, and will allow you to move very slow in stop and go traffic and b) already are a defensive driver. I used to ride sport bikes and by comparison people rarely "don't see" me compared to the biking day, all things considered.
This was a fantastic review!
I'm go glad to see that I'm not the only one who has to look over his shoulder to check my blind spot. People make fun of me constantly for doing it, but as you've pointed out, you really can't see around that rear corner otherwise.
It's good to do that regardless. That's actually one of the reasons I hate these blind spot monitors cars have nowadays. It doesn't change my behavior at all, because with or without a blind spot monitor, I still look over my shoulder, so all it is is a distracting light in the mirror.
Situational awareness, mate...I hardly do the shouldercheck ever, not even on highways...I just, as mentioned, memorize everything around me, wait until the last car has passed and then immediately pull out...or I just stay on the fast lane...it´s not that "fast" you know ;)
Hunne2303 Situational awareness is great, and if you have it, you're a better driver than most, but you're playing with fire there mate. No shame in turning your head to look. All the best security systems have redundancy built into them.
I used to have an older mini from the 90s and at 6' 2" I too would have to crane my head forward to see the traffic lights. My mechanic suggested using a concave glass disc on the top of the windshield (on the inside) to redirect the what the traffic lights are doing. Trust me, it saved the strain on my neck tremendously, I suggest that you do the same.
I understand the issues. I daily drive a Miata NB and I can definitely understand some of your points
7:23 ... that smile... that smile tells all about that car and why it's your daily, no matter how hard it is to live with! You love that car! True petrolhead! :D
Wow! You weren't kidding when you said it looks like a clown car when you get out of the Elise!
Completely agree with the motorcycle comparison. Have had my Elise since 2006, got my motorcycle license a few years back and all the same safety rules apply. Basically assume you are invisible.
Very interesting as that's similar to my experiences of daily driving an S2000 including the blind spot issues that my hardtop creates.
same here. with the mirrors set just right, I am ok with the blind spots with the top down, but with the top up, sometimes you can't even merge against on comming traffic...
Had the same thought. Drove mine home after a long day at work - it was completely dark, but that didn't stop me from putting the top down (and the heat on).
Same. I'd forgotten about looking up for stop-lights. Miss that car.
Had a s2000 and now an exige s...the s2000 is much more comfortable.
Joe Yeah, I would think so. The S2000 can be reasonably comfortable on the standard suspension but sometimes can feel a bit cramped inside. I would love to drive an exige one day. They also seem to hold their value quite well so definitely a great purchase!
Great job...awesome review.
