    What are some of your favorite things to stock up on in your pantry and why?

    • @theunknownknowsBYvoivod
      @theunknownknowsBYvoivod Месяц назад +4

      I take what I can get. I can't have too much powdered garlic and onion. Besides being a seasoning, they can have a medicinal effect for me. But I am not neglecting other spices, because morale is important. I'm pushing for more canned meats, minute rice (vs. reg.), lentils (vs. beans), instant potatoes, and more instant coffee.

    • @theunknownknowsBYvoivod
      @theunknownknowsBYvoivod Месяц назад +5

      Instant rice, lentils require less water and heat. Instant potatoes are versatile. Coffee for alertness, morale, gift/barter, mild appetite suppression. Soy sauce to fight food fatigue.

      I just make sure I cover the food groups. I have #10 cans of pancake mix, bread mix and cheese. Cans of veggies and meat. I bought bacon bits and we grow some herbs like mint as its easy. I have both canned and dried potatoes and sweet potatoes. I have mashed potatoes and gravy granules. I like homestyle foods but my family like Asian so we have rice and kimchi. You can get canned kimchi. I have dehydrated fruit. I have peanutbutter and also in powder form. I pray for peace.

      I truly understand that. I was in that situation several years ago. It takes quite some time to put back a years worth of food and keep it in a sustainable rotation that works for the family. Honestly, I started with just buying the BOGO deals and putting the extra back. Then, I moved on to buying the 10 for 10 when that was a thing, lol, and eventually, as the months pass, you start to see progress and it gives you the drive to keep pushing. First, it was trying to put at least 3 months for emergencies the 6mth now a year. So please have faith it just takes time. 🙏

    Hi Grey. Love food hauls. 👍😄. FYI We've found that the Modern Pantry milk doesn't store as long as the previous Gossner's brand. It tastes fine but, after the BB date, clumps float in the milk, with a texture like flan. Gossner's didn't do that. I'll have to try those grits.😋 Thanks for the great video. Blessings 💙

    I have cacao butter and cacao powder and have made my own candies with it. They don't look 'pretty' but they are definitely good, and you can't eat too many, they are very rich! I have never seen that much shelf stable milk, so thank you for describing that. Most of my pantry is home canned goods. I tried store-bought chicken in a can - yuk! It had so much salt in it that I had to rinse it off to try to eat it. I do like Keystone, and order cases of it, too. But to can meat, when you think about it, is easier than canning vegetables. I get the meat either from something I raised, or bring it home from the store, and it is in the canning jars pretty darn quick. Yes, it takes 90-minutes in the pressure canner, but I didn't plant it, weed it, pick it, wash it, cut it up. There is nothing finer than going 'shopping' in your own pantry. I have a basket that peaches came in last year (we had a bad frost in our state that took out most of the fruit - big economic hit), and I go into my freezers and in the pantry and come out with home-canned peaches, green beans, beef I raised, get into the potato crates....yep - peace of mind. Apparently there is a term now, a blue zone. That's where people live a long life from growing their own food, working outside, being in fresh air and sunshine. I've done that my whole life and had no idea I was in a blue zone, LOL! I'm just shy of 70, and still ride and train my horses, grow food, and do other fun stuff here on the farm. No medications either. Food and exercise is medicine. :) Edited to add.....why are all these people building boxes for vegetables to grow in? I have a rototiller in a 3/4 acre garden, well one rototiller on the tractor, and then one that goes in between the rows after things are planted. If I had to build boxes for everything, that'd be all I was doing, and I couldn't till up the dirt. And, yes, there are plenty of earthworms and I've been tilling the same garden for 40 years - lots of horse manure.

    Thanks Grey. That's a great food haul. I'll have to see if our Dollar Tree carries the milk. They quit carrying shelf stable milk many years ago. It was a different brand though. Maybe they've started carrying this brand. I prefer Great Value lunch meat too. I don't eat grits often but my hubby does. We get Dixie Lily which is a small mill in Alabama so it's not widely available. He likes it better than other brands. Much Love ❤

    I think baking powder loses its effectiveness after not very long, but cream of Tatar & bicarb of soda which combined makes baking powder, stores a really long time when kept spectate. So it’s worth having bulk of each and mixing yourself! :)

      @GreyManPrepping  Месяц назад +1

      Yes, so unopened baking powder can be stored for up to 18 months and still be fresh and effective. After that, it starts to loose it's potency. And yep, we also store those ingredients as well as they can store for much longer when stored properly. 😊👍

    I like listening to your thought process as you go thru these items. Bit brilliant to get that large cacao (ka COW’) powder as I understand there is a huge dip in availability happening right now. I’m a chocolate fan - very scary thought to run out! Spices! Gosh, we tend not to think of these little items…yet foreign spices may be increasingly difficult to find due to intl shipping “issues”. Good thinking there. 👍🏻 Also, we should ALL be growing some herbs in whatever garden, balcony or windowsill we can utilize. Your food stash is amazing. I am going to be the one who pushes back on clearing shelves. There are numerous seniors in our area who have nobody to help them shop. As they age stooping to the bottom of shelves is hard enough without getting there and finding someone cleared the shelf of basic needs like milk. I too have a huge pantry but one thing NOT ON MY LIST is making life for the poor and aged people’s lives harder still because they are not as wealthy, healthy, fit or computer skilled as younger folks. I’m 67 and well aware of what may come. I prepare accordingly and have done so for years. I never clear a shelf of things I can get elsewhere along my travels on another day. 36 cartons of milk is not a shortage, rather an inconvenience for you to hit one more store. Our rural community has few choices to buy food etc, let alone access deals on anything. Please please please do not clear shelves. If you are buying multiples to stock a pantry leave something for others and order online. Milk is out of stock locally at DT for sometimes a month. Many are less fortunate and don’t even know whats coming. They will end up being trampled by those with more money and energy. May God help them. 🙏🏻

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  Месяц назад +3

      I truly understand your perspective. One of the things I do at my church is outreach to the elderly folks. I build them medical kits and hurricane kits, as well as shop for folks who are less fortunate. We also help disabled vets in the same way. I don't put that stuff on my channel as many folks like their privacy. I do order online when I can. Usually, it takes about 2 weeks on average to get my order. Last year, we were able to help 242 folks. This year, we are trying to double that. Our DT stores stay pretty stocked. Thiers 7 in a 20-mile radius towards the heart of the city itself. I live about 25 mins away from the main population center. We've been trying to get others involved, but most folks say they don't have time. Which to me seems like a poor excuse cause I work 2 jobs and still find time. Things have really changed, and I feel folks don't understand the importance of helping others.

    Thank you, that was a great presentation. I do have a question. When I started prepping 3 years ago many preppers were putting Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth on the floor near stockpiles. Haven't heard a word in the last few years. Is it necessary? I do use it in the garden. Thanks.

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  Месяц назад +1

      Good question, I use it in the garden as well. So when it comes to things like flour, it can be a bit tough as it will absorb anything in it, or next to as in odors and so on. So if I'm storing flour long term, I'll usually keep it in its original packaging and then vacuum seal it in mylar to keep light away from it then place my packages in food grade 5 gallon buckets with dry bay leaves in the bucket as a pest (bugs) deterant. Flour likes to be stored in cool, dry, & dark environments. Moisture & Sunlight is your worst enemy when storing most dry goods. Temperatures can play a role as well, depending on where you. live. Sorry I really went a bit off topic on this 😅 Diatomaceous Earth can also be used to help preserve food storage items such as flour, rice, or any other dry foods. It can also deter and exterminate unwanted insects, last but not least, DE is also great at absorbing moisture, keeping food dry and mold-free.
