    I literally went through the same thing! From majoring in pre-med to having second thoughts and dilemmas as an ABA therapist. Now, I am preparing to start graduate school in School Psychology this upcoming fall. Thank you for sharing your story and I am excited to hear more about your journey in becoming a School Psychologist:)

    Hi Tiffany!! Thank you for all of your videos that you put out!!! I just graduated undergrad!! Like you, I started off pre-med!! It wasn't until my junior year when I realized that I didn't want to continue on with medicine so I literally googled "things to do with a psychology degree" LOL... And then I found school psychology!!! I will be starting a school psychology grad program in the fall and am pretty excited!!! Thank you once again and I hope you continue to make videos!!!!

    Thank you so much for sharing your story! I feel the same way about if I would have known about the field beforehand. I also found myself going in different directions before I got to my school psychology destination. I think each major that I picked before has led me to learn more about myself & understand how I truly want to help others. Your channel is so inspirational. Again, thank you for educating people on school psychology!

    I was made aware of your channel after finally realizing what I want to pursue, School Psychology. I've also been lost on what I want to do with my life - but I'm glad after a few life-changing events I know now. It's going to take a few years for me to apply for a graduate program on school psychology - I'm glad I'm not discouraged with age as much (haha). Since I have a lot of time before then, I'm going to continue looking into what I can do; researching, gaining more insight, learn other things that I can obtain, etc. Your channel has great connections to other school psychologists and I'm looking forward to browse around (and hopefully to other great channels like yours!). Thank you so much~

    I'm a special education teacher (12 years) who has been thinking about school psychology for the past 2 years now. I couldn't make up my mind between Clinical Psychology and School Psychology but I love working with my kids. I've worked with School Psychologists too so I would ask them questions and just became more interested. I've been doing a lot of researching and I stumbled upon your channel and I am so glad. I have found it very informative and helpful. I will be applying for the 2021 Fall Session for School Psychology. I just really wonder how things will change with the pandemic in full effect. How do you think classes and internships be? Thanks for sharing and love your channel. 👍💜

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +1

      Wow, I'm honored that you found my content helpful as a special education teacher! You must have so much background knowledge and experience that will come in super handy during coursework. We tried to answer questions about distance learning in my most recent video but in short, it really depends. I think classes will be not ideal but doable (practicum and assessment classes will be tough to do online but other classes that are more textbook or discussion based will be ok). I'll be starting internship in a few weeks, and I'll be sure to keep everyone updated on how we proceed. Thank you so much for watching and good luck on your journey!

    Hi Tiffany! Can you explain a bit more on what makes the school psychology role stressful? I’ve been reading some forums online and I see a LOT of people who experience things like bad politics, way too many case loads, and it seems like school pscyh from day to day might not reflect how it is described in the abstract (dynamic, working with kids, counseling aspect, etc.) I’m just really worried all I’ll be doing is testing and report writing! Any thoughts/advice is super helpful! Thank you for your vids, they’re the reason I’ve discovered school psych!

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +2

      That's a GREAT question! I definitely don't have a straight answer to this because it really depends, and also because I haven't started fully practicing yet. I think it depends on your personality, the school culture, and size of the district. A huge caseload can be very stressful but can also mean that you solely focus on testing and eligibility. However, if you also want to focus on mental health and prevention services, you end up with even more work. Also, school politics can be stressful because there's money and power involved. If you want to do less testing and report writing, you should definitely consider working in a middle or high school!

    Just discovered your channel and I love you videos!! I am currently looking for a NASP certified grad program to get into... I would love if you made a video about what type of schooling you did (masters/PhD) what types of classes and level of difficulty, how long it took you ? And the internship options

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад

      I discuss my program here and there in videos but I can definitely make a consolidated video about my coursework and program. I'm in a master's + advanced certificate program, it's not difficult but you have your readings and work cut out for you, it's 2 years of coursework and 1 year of internship. You can pretty much do internship anywhere in the country as long as they're willing to take you and they meet your university requirements

    Hi Tiffany! Just found your channel and I love everything you put out, thank you for sharing. I am finishing up my application (I also didn’t know SP existed and did have an epiphany about a week ago when I discovered it!) but I’m wondering if you have any info on how competitive the programs are? You mentioned they are in demand, but only 13 people in your class. I don’t have as much experience as you do so I’m nervous!! Thank you ! :)

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад

      hey! I think they are becoming more competitive but the percentages really depend on which program you're applying to. My program specifically had around 70 candidates called back for interview day, and they selected 13 for the new cohort. Maybe you can reach out to the programs you're interested in to ask what they're looking for in a candidate or how competitive the program is. I've also seen admittance stats on some university websites for school psychology programs.

    Hi, tiffany! Thank you for your videos. I am so lucky that I found your channel :) We have a little bit of similar background! I am currently living in Korea, wishing to apply for a school psychology graduate program next year. I wonder how the COVID-19 affects on the job positions. Are the school psychs still in shortage? Also,
    I am afraid that my non-native english ability may bring difficulties of learning at grad school. Any tips for ESL learners?
    Thanks!

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +1

      Hi Ciara! There is still a workforce shortage in the US but things have been moving a little slower due to COVID. I think some areas are taking social emotional learning more seriously at this time so they are looking for more mental health professionals. It's definitely tough to study in the US as a non-native English speaker but I recommend recording lectures, utilizing your writing center, and reaching out to your professors often. Unlike Korea, if you seek help from classmates or professors, there will be many that will be eager to help. If you want any advice on the application process or grad school in general, feel free to reach out to my dad who is a counselor and education consultant (wjlmat@gmail.com)

      If you're not ready yet, you can definitely take some time to study and prep. I would just make sure you have your scores before applying so you don't scramble at the last minute. I actually took mine a few months after graduating college, when I was applying for Ph.D. programs. My scores were still valid a few years later so I used them for my school psych application. Hope this helps!

    Hi Tiffany. Your videos help so much, I am planning to become a school psychologist after I finish my bachelors degree in psychology. Do you have suggestions of a job I can get after I get out with my undergrad while I finish my masters online? Also do you believe a masters in educational psych applies to the school psych field. Thanks!

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +1

      Hi Katelyn! With the pandemic putting a strain on a lot of employment opportunities, I think teaching children online (tutoring, english, etc) is a really good way to earn some money and gain experience. In the US it seems like educational psych is more research based and school psych is more practice based. Outside of the US, though, it seems like educational psych = school psychology. I would double check with the programs that you're considering to make sure it's the track you're looking for!

    • @TiffanyLee

      Having a background in education is extremely helpful but not necessary. I would recommend checking the programs that you're interested in for their pre-requisites (do they require a psych major? any specific courses?) and go from there. I know a handful of teachers that have switched careers and they come with an abundance of knowledge about classroom management and academics.

    Hi...i'm new here i just started watching i'm 17 now and i'll be 18 next year and school psychology sound's interesting but i have alot of issue's going on and the school,hostpitals and therapist's messed up alot and dropped the ball on me multipal time's that my future could be in alot of trouble
    I was placed in another school ti'll i showed improvement and it wasnt supposed to be a permament thing and they were supposed to give us more schools to choose from and they all agreed that i wasnt supposed to go to the school that i'm now stuck in wich wasnt part of the plan or agreement but somehow along the way someone fucked up and dropped the ball and even messed up my IEP and shit and the school refuses to take responsibility or will say its them or something and continue to give us the go around and i may never go back to my school and may not even graduate or get an actual diploma cuz the school that im now in doesnt give u real ones and they wanna keep me in their school till i age out
    And i get physically/verbally emotionally abused at home
    I'll u a bit of my story-
    I struggled with bullying/cyberbullying by my teachers and peers,was in an abusive friendship,sexually assaulted as a child by two boys my age,hurrassed due to my disabilities and me being in special edd,verbally abused by my grandmother,lost a friend to suicide,self harm,alcohol addiction,abused medications at home,suicide attempts,dated older guys my age on these apps and was forced and influenced to send them pictures of my body,witnessed domestic violence and animal abuse in my home and because of the bullying and abuse i became a bully myself and would verbally abuse my younger sister and emotionally neglected my brother by with holding any love towards him and would beat my dog whenever i was angry,
    My step dad suffers with ADHD and skin/kidney liver problems and definetly has anger issues and he smokes alot and hes acts like a narssic (cant spell it right sorry)
    And he knows what he does hurts me and is abusive but he refuses help or to stop and he was in jail before in his past lets say he went through ALOT while growing up wich explains his short temper and his rages and emotional outbreaks and why he disciplines me this why?
    Confusing part is that they do gebually care and love me but i know what they do is wrong but no one will listen or will believe me since they minipluated my school that im minipulative or a liar and a story teller wich wasnt true and once i told a school psychologist but they said "dont worry its not abuse as long as its not physical" when it WAS physical and emotional and he even was concearned and told my mom through an email wich lead to me being cussed,screamed at and hit across my head and they then told him that they never beat me or anything and that all they did was take away my phone or grounded me
    My grandmother neglected and physically and verbally emotionally abused my mom mom had no friends cuz she kept getting moved to other schools,she couldnt go to college because of her and was placed in many foster homes wich treated her terribly
    Life for mom was hard being a single teen parent raising 3 kids thus causing her to become abusive
    My grandmother treats me differently comoared to my two siblings and makes fun if me and my tourrettes and bad mouths my parents cuz im like my mom and blames me to why they have such a bad relationship
    My brother is in the Army,
    My uncle suffers with lime disease and depression,
    My biological dad has been in prision cause he had an affair with another women thus getting both her and my mom pregnant meaning i had a half sister wich he sexually abused and he stole things and me and my family for money and he had to put many restraining orders against him cuz he refused to leave us alone and he kept writing to us and finding ways to contact us and get information about us and mom is unsure if he mightve sexually touched us or did things to us as babies in any way now cause she nsver knew about it abd he would take us to places and shit and hell be released from prision i think NEXT year!😔 scary part is is that we dont know what disorders he couldve passed onto me from his side of the famiky due to him being adopted so well never know
    I struggle with-develop mentally delayed,Tourrettes,eggsma wich is dry skin,nightmares,anxiety,depression,internal tremors and may have c-ptsd or bpd or deseraltion disorder cant say it right but will never know because of my therapist and mom who discharged me from therapy thinking im fine when im not and not letting me see a psychiatrist to get professional help or to be diognosed so for now im struggling with an unknown undiognosed disorder with no treatment at the momment but will be taking CONGITIVE behavioral therapy and seeing a psychiatrist but were doing it my MOTHERS way cause she thinks everything has to involve or be with my tourrettes and that tremors cant be physlogical or from trauma but has to be only genetic wich isnt true cause it started happening after the traumatic events and because of the ongoing abuse that im still going through to this day wich is raising my anxiety levels and my depression and causes me fatigue,stress,insomia,internal tremors because of what they do to me wich is WHY i have tremors and it also started happening more once i took this medication to help my tourrettes and around when the pandemic happened so those mightve worsened it to but i stopped taking the medication cause it wasnt helping my tourrettes and was only making my breast's get bigger and i gained weight and it was messing with my head really badly
    I have trust issues and am afraid of intimacy and relationships and my parents mock me or get mad at me that i cant handle hearing or knowing or watching people kiss or be in a relationship or have sex
    I lost alot of my friends,my grandma is dying,and my family and i are struggling to stay in our home but they want us to move out and thank god we with edd wich is a sweet/lovable guy and neighbor whose rich and my step dad works for him and hes helping us and refuses to let us go homeless or struggle and hes helping us get a house!!! And even is helping my dad go to college and he said he was gonna pay for it and we were shocked cause no obe ever has done something like this for our family!?
    My friends know about my home issues and the abuse and are trying to take me in with them once im 18 or 19 and will help me get professional help once they do but my parents want to keep me at 18 de to my disabilities and to be honest i dint blame them cuz i cant at 18 cuz i dont know how when or what ill do yet so i kinda have to stay with them till i can move out and afford to get my own home and job.
    The pandemic sucks exspecially when your home with the Abuser
    But i really am getting tired,i might attempt it again sometime next year or when im 19
    I might still be in high school 19 and be held back for one more year wich im okay with since i love school and dont want to grow up and leave the people at school but theres also negative sides to it as well
    I look at my school psychologist like a father figure and he doesnt know that but i wish he did know and i wish he was my dad or could adopt me and then i wouldnt have to leave him or say goodbye to him
    I have attachment issues
    I get attached to certain teachers and adults or friends but end up losing them
    So now i hate getting attached to people in fear of getting hurt and i might go back to cutting cuz it helps me cope and the only reason i stopped was because of my parents abusing me and screaming,cussing,threatening me and stuff whenever they knew i was hurting myself and accused me for doing it to kill myself or for attention seeking or mom would cry while dad would pry answers from me and sometimes theyd even get physical with me or dad would ask me to tell him and that he wont laugh at me or think its stupid but half way through hell chuckle and put his two sentences in and then tell me to keep talking or hed mock my reasons for hurting myself and etc. wich put the fear into me and it didnt help me at all and me not hurting myself was fake and wasnt coming from my heart or was actually genuine i only stopped out of fear
    It hurt's
    I wanna die
    I wanna die
    Sorry

    Hi Tiffany! Is the field of School Psychology diverse? One of the reasons I left speech pathology was the lack of diversity/racism

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  2 года назад

      tbh, it's not very diverse (yet) but they really do advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion. it's one of the ten domains that permeate all aspects of service delivery and there are special projects in NASP that encourage diverse populations to join the field. it's not easy being the only or one of few but if you live in a diverse area, students love seeing diverse staff!

    • @TiffanyLee

      yes, you're so right! it's a much more limited field than social work or general counseling/therapy. i think in certain states, with proper licensure, you can open your own practice and provide outside testing or counseling but it's still pretty limited with a phd.
