What happens when you shove a 57 dead on the cone of a fender amp? Here comes everything you need to know about micing up and mixing live guitars. Is a 906 mic really any different. Low pass, high, cuts, boosts, compression, effects. Acoustic vs electric, pickup vs mic. We’re going to look at the when and why for each one of these scenarios and maybe a few more. You’ll know exactly when to pick which mic and what to do if your guitarist doesn’t have a pickup. Just becuase I suffered through years of ignorance and poor tone doesn’t mean you should, just watch on to learn everything that it took me years to learn.

Great advice and I'm SO happy to hear somebody say 1) the 57 can be harsh (which is why I prefer a 906) and 2) get a 57 off the cap towards the side of the cone. 57 close to center is a good starting place for recording when bright guitars sit in the mix the way people expect. But live we need to reproduce the *sound heard onstage* in a more natural way. Nobody on stage is listening to the guitar amp on axis, unless the amp is tilted up at the player's head. So my rule of thumb is "mic off axis when listening off axis".

Thanks for describing the sound of the SM57 and placement on the cone well. Most of the time in videos like these they'll just say put it here because it sounds good and try experimenting without telling you why.

I've just found this channel but it's like finding a live sound Jesus. Nice to see a clip of The Mary Wallopers too, I mixed them at a folk festival a couple years back!

Haha what a compliment. Thank you 😂 also yes! The Mary Wallopers were a bunch of nutters, I had a great laugh with them.

Plus 1 on the Sennheiser , 906 maybe a little smoother than the SM 57 but they work fine of course

Great video. Any advise about the electric guitarists that pass you a 1/4 inch jack for direct input to your mixing console rather than using a Mic? I have seen both bass and electric guitarists doing that when they use in-ear monitors. Thanks.

Thanks! Yes, Use a DI box. Here's a video that explains why that's important but long story short, guitar into line level input = impedance mismatch.

If you're feeling fancy most mixers have some sort of digital guitar amp you can set up as an insert, video below:

Wonderful video very informative. I have an sm57 clone mic, tbone mb75 and a supro delta king. I keep getting feedback from the microphone even in lower volumes. I have in front of me an active monitor for vocals and guitar and the amp is right behind me raised on a table as I like to hear that too. Is it a placement issue ?do I need to upgrade the microphone ? Or is it the pa setting? Note that when I lowered the volume on the mixer it had less feedback but still some but I couldn't hear the guitar very well in the mix... your input please? 😢

Hey thanks. It's hard to say what the cause is. I'd isolate each step of the process and test it. If you can't get the mic loud in the PA without feedback then don't turn the monitor on until you sort that problem. Mute the PA and then troubleshoot the monitor.
I can't speak for the tbone mic but with a 57 try setting 25-30 db of gain and turning the amp up to get the signal to 0 on the console meters. Raise the fader.
I would advise just getting a 57 as well. They're very affordable and reliable. Could be that the cheap mic is less directional at certain frequencies. Hard to say with so many variables.
