  • "What is this," you ask? It's a Godzilla retrospective, baby! This chronicles my interest as a Godzilla fan starting in the early '90s, which as an American, was not the easiest time to celebrate the King of the Monsters. We talk Toho, Trendmasters, Dark Horse, TriStar...even a little stop motion along the way!
    Hope you enjoy the video!

Words can’t describe how much Godzilla has changed my life for the better. I may not have been born in the 90s, but I was happy with how I was introduced to the series. Seeing Godzilla 2000 for the first time ever, I was blown away with everything I saw. A giant monster destroying everything, causing chaos and even fought another big monster, it was the coolest thing ever. I then saw the new movies at the time, which were the Millennium series, and I loved every single one of them. I then learned of the Heisei series and that immediately became my favorite series of Godzilla due to the awesome kaiju during that time such as Biollante, Mecha-King Ghidorah, Battra, MechaGodzilla 2, SpaceGodzilla, Destoroyah, and many more, and of course the fights. Truly mind blowing stuff as a kid, and when I learned of the Pipeworks trilogy afterwards, I played the shit out of them all, especially Save The Earth. Overall, this franchise means the world to me, and I’m happy it’s still going with the MonsterVerse and Minus One is definitely looking to be a great time. Excellent retrospective, dude. You nailed it and I’m definitely looking forward to more of your content now.🙂👌

Thank you so much for watching! I really loved those Pipeworks games, they were so much fun to just pick up and destroy everything on the screen. Overall I think Heisei is probably my favorite series as well, but I’ve got a lot of love for what the Monsterverse has done and I’m absolutely excited for Minus One. Glad you liked the video!

Growing up in the 80's and 90s it was Godzilla 85 and the old Showa era films. But in 96 i hit the goldmine i found out a comic shop close to me had bootleg heisei era fims. I didn't even now Japan was making new films. It felt like i hit the lottery. I will never forget how exciting i was.

That would have been a dream come true for me as a kid. Being used to the Showa stuff definitely painted a mental image of Godzilla movies in my head, so I think I would have been blown away at that age if I saw Heisei movies with a budget and better effects haha.

Being a Godzilla fan in the uk was actually painful from the 90s to the mid 2000s only thing we had was the 98 movie , the Atari games and then legendary is what gave us so much more for Godzilla like , 9 year old me would be jealous of 29 year old me

You got to see your work on a big screen right before the newest Godzilla movie?!?!? That’s fucking wild, man! Congratulations!
As a 90’s Godzilla kid, I completely relate to your experiences here. Not much for us outside of the movies that occasionally appeared on TV or in a video rental store until Godzilla 98 dropped. I had Godzilla and MechaGodzilla from that 90’s wave (the 5 inch poseable figures). I loved them. Used to make paper and cardboard buildings for them to smash through.

Major thanks man! It was definitely one of those crazy “never woulda seen this coming” experiences haha. I’ve got some behind the scenes stuff for an upcoming Between the Frames that I think people will dig. And man, I REALLY wish I kept all my Trendmasters Godzilla figures. They’re expensive now, but they were definitely awesome as a kid.

Been waiting for a Godzilla retrospective from you ever since the Batman toy retrospective all those years ago. And I'm glad you took it out of the collecting specifics of lines and brands and applied your own history with the franchise. I know you and I have talked for hours about these movies over the years, but the toys from the 90s and the lack of knowledge of the Heisei and Millenium era was something I never experienced.
Speaking of, grew up in the 2000s and always had knowledge of the different eras, different designs, etc. So I can't really relate to that, but I can relate to being the only Godzilla fan in my class for years. It's only been in the last few years or so when I graduated high school that I could talk to people in person about these movies. I know that feeling of bringing up a Godzilla movie and getting weird looks from people. But thanks to the Monsterverse and Toho really pushing the brand in the US, that isn't the case anymore, and that's awesome!
I'm ashamed to admit that I missed your BBTS ad in theaters. Godzilla 2000 is far from my favorite Godzilla movie and I wasn't took keen on seeing it again, even in theaters. So my apologies on not supporting your piece in Godzilla's history haha.
Great video, Cap, and congrats on the BBTS animation!

    • @CaptainMcKayRandom
      @CaptainMcKayRandom  9 месяцев назад +2

After seeing Godzilla 2000 again, I think I remember why I went 23 years without watching it haha. Definitely not one of the better ones, might even be the weakest of the Millennium series. But it’ll always have a special place for me, being the first new Toho movie I saw in theaters upon release, as well as now being involved with the animation. I didn’t hype it up because part of me was waiting for that last minute “plans changed, we’re not playing the ad” but thankfully it did happen haha.
Makes sense to hear that even in the 2000s Godzilla wasn’t super well-known among school aged kids. The lack of new movies from 2004-2014, plus the fact they were all foreign, makes a lot of sense. It was always cool finding that one person who DID know about Godzilla, made you feel like part of an exclusive club or something haha. Glad you enjoyed the video man - as you said, I’ve been throwing this idea around since that Batman video came out. Finally seemed like the right time.

I feel like I was born around the perfect time to be a Godzilla fan considering my childhood was the 2000s so even though the 98 film was my introduction to Godzilla, the countless showa era vhs tapes combined with unsupervised internet opened up a whole world to me in the blink of an eye, I especially remember sitting at the computer watching the G98 animated series which hypnotized me. I even remember getting the Final wars and GMK dvds for christmas as well as the mini figure playset for gmk. I also had my mom rent out destroy all monsters on the gamecube everytime we visited blockbuster until she eventually bought it for me. so yeah, the stars aligned at that time. its just crazy hearing the perspectives of 80s and 90s Godzilla fans only having access to so little. Also I had no idea that was your stop motion animation during the G2K screening! So cool!

Just seeing this comment now - sounds like you had a great time enjoying the fandom! I was already in college when the Xbox/GameCube/PS2 games came out, but man did I love them. My nephew and I could not have enjoyed this in the 90's... aside from the fact that he was still 10 years away from even being born... there was no way to watch without owning all the movies... which 12 year old me did not in 1992 when I became a fan. My nephew is 18 years old now, and I'll be sending him this way so he can watch this fine video. He is an aspiring stop motion animator as well!

As a kid in the 1970s (born in 1967), we had the Showa films (saw some on TV and some in the theater at the time), the Hanna Barbara Godzilla cartoon, my Shogun Warrior Godzilla with the flame tongue and shooting fist, and the Marvel Comics 2 year run of Godzilla (wanna see Godzilla fight the FF and the Avengers?). It was actually a great time. Still have my Shogun Godzilla (got a new lever for his flame tongue and FINALLY got my Shogun Rodan that Santa never brought me). Now I have a number of X-Plus Godzillas (12 & 18 inch), the Ultimate Godzilla from Mezco, and a bunch of the Super 7 figures (including the Mecha Godzilla Shogun figure). It's even a BETTER time today to be a G-Fan!

That’s a great story, thanks for sharing! I knew a little about the Godzilla Hanna Barbera cartoon but I never caught reruns too often. Part of me didn’t care for it because it was so similar to other HB cartoons.
I’ve seen a lot of really excellent X-Plus pieces, and that new Mezco Godzilla looks amazing. I got their King Kong a while back and it’s gorgeous. Space and budget are an issue for me, so I’ve gotta stick to my smaller figures for the most part haha.

Thanks for watching man! After all the years and all the dust settled, I think Godzilla 1998 is still a fun enough movie. It’s just one of those weird things where they could have called it something else and people wouldn’t have any issue with it, but they wanted to make it “Godzilla” despite being way different from anything recognizable as Godzilla. On its own, it’s a cool little piece of the overall Godzilla canon.

This is a video I am grateful exists knowing that there are people who grew fond of something that wouldn’t become well-recognized to many people in the states until the years have passed where journey still continues with new fans not only learning about the character, but OG fan’s history with the titular gorilla-whale. That section at 16:25 is something I’m happy to see happen then with DGDX Animation and now you Captain.
Slightly irrelevant, but eight years ago from this video’s upload, Smashmaster12 released a review of Diamond Select Toy’s Minimates Godzilla Series 1 Box Set; ruclips.net/video/mL3tffdWurM/видео.htmlsi=Ha3lrTFgUWyHMExc to which I started collecting all three sets and have made stop-motion animations both influenced by Smashmaster12 and CaptainMcKayRandom.
