- Fires started by lightning often erupt in very remote, mountainous parts of the state, far from any roads. Sometimes the only way to get fire crews to them is to have them jump out of planes. It takes a special breed to jump (a) out of a perfectly good airplane, and (b) into an active fire zone. But smokejumpers have been doing it for decades.

that opening take is beautiful. bravo to those who made this.
Awesome, my hats off to you guys!
Thanks for the work you do.
Much respect for the Smoke Jumpers. Back when I was a kid in the 60's, I wanted to be a Smoke Jumper. Those guys and gals are the cream of the crop. For me, I did kinda come close. Jumped 3 static line at 3300 feet with the USC Skydiving club in the 70's. Then in 2002, Volunteer Firefighter.
my utmost admiration for you guys, i have worked with you all in the past, not forrest stuff but testing, you guys are the best at accuracy, haha - you need it, awesome - sincerest respect
Airborne!! I'm from the 82nd airborne. Fort Bragg.
A skydiver asked, "why the old conical style canopies? And why static lines?"
I think when coming down in middle of forest you don't want to be moving horizontally but vertically for a tree landing. Notice the jumpsuit and helmets with face masks which provide protection. Like Army Airborne, the skydiving part is only a means of transportation, the real job is after landing. Rounds may not have soft landings like squares but if you can't handle the landings, you will not be able to fire fighting anyway.
Interesting there are only nine Calif smokejumpers (they must have huge egos being a few of the best) and they remove the fuel as they don't have water to extinguish the fire.
Not hard being the best when there is only a few of them out of only a few more.
These guys carry lots of gear these style parachutes are designed for more weight it's the same style that the paratroopers use in the military when they're carrying almost a hundred pounds of ammo
There’s 40 ca smokejumpers. There’s only 9 smokejumper teams in the US.
@@andypeterson8013 Because only the best get to be smoke jumpers it's a highly competitive field which means the ones there ARE the best.
The MC-6 is a fairly agile round canopy, you’re guaranteed a soft landing, if you don’t run with the wind and you dump your air.
these guys must be fired up when it's go time
Good one!
Stand up shuffle to the door jump right out and yell for more.....😂😂😂😂😂😂Airborne all the wayyyyyy!
Is everybody happy asked the sergeant looking up?
We like it here, we love it here!
It's not gravity that brings them down to Earth, it's the weight of their balls.
Planning to apply after my contract i’m airborne paratrooper rn
Lmk how that transition goes
in case ya'll didn't realize, these guys are the real deal
Great video! Eric Hagen, MYC'88.
How can I legally use this in my thesis film?
This is the coolest thing in the frickin world

Just like the certain tactical, strategic and safety advantages existing with use of a 7 cell "square" over the quick-drop Paracommander round canopy, fire fighting effectiveness would be vastly increased with a 9 cell Unit IV RamAir. Slower, softer more accurate landings as well as tactical enhancement through increased fire observability with the greater time to watch things happen using the much loftier Unit IV. How so? Firstly, the 303 square feet of rip-stop nylon parachute material making up the 9 cell can account for glide ratios of up to 10:1 with descent rates as low as 5-10 fps with full brakes!! Impressive? You bet it is. Fire actions can change momentarily, so must the observability opportunities be made available to all smoke jumpers on a team.
Besides the amazingly soft stand up touch downs, especially advantageous hillside landings can eventually make jump teams a tighter, much more cohesive team unit with the use of RamAir 9 cell with its increased mobility and stability. Ongoing communications can also be maintained and relayed to ground commanders or other smoke jumper teams, by any member of the team while flying in recon type formations offering crucial, minute to minute updates on fire activity which can be made available from a slow moving aerial source. More strategic, safer landing points can be chosen for enhanced personnel placement using the greater agility and potentials inherent in Unit IV's. Better placement of resources is always the aim in creating successful firefighting outcomes and when utilizing the many more options made available by the Unit IV 9 cell canopy - exclusively, more strategic placement of those fighting the fire can result in major advancements and improvements in wildfire suppression and threat elimination. Smoke Jumpers are Selfless Angel's from Above working on man's behalf. They are loyal, intelligent individuals with unmatched courage and abilities to easily adapt to quickly changing situations and environments. As with all firefighters, the smoke jumpers are much appreciated and truly deserve the life-saving potentials that are held wihin the remarkable list of attributes that this new possibility presents in the extreme and risk-laden field of aerial-based firefighting technology.
The navy seals of fire fighters
I’m only 12 but I want to devote my life to this I’m gonna go into programs and stuff this is what I want to do
Do it and never give up no matter what anybody tells you
get em kiddo
Get go em tiger!
Nice job
Why are they jumping rounds not square
The bureau of Land Management was jumping ram air canopies in the mid ‘90’s and it looks like the Forest Service has converted also. The static line pulls out a drogue chute to stabilize the jumper before they pull their main. I presume the reserve is still front mounted to provide protection if they go into a tree or bolder ( both major bummers).
Hero's all the way!!!
Thumbs up!
I bet all the fortnight kids would want this job
These are T-10s! No thanks lol
