When I see that genuine expression of joy on your face when you're listening to one of my favorite bands (Opeth, Riverside, Soen, etc), I get ecstatic.
I watch loads of reaction videos specially since Covid19, but your reactions are my favorite, Jim! I just love your wonderful taste in music as much as your commentary. I really hope you keep this channel alive for many years. Respect from Iran.

Thank you so so much Nima, music connects us all. I hope to keep making videos for a long time yet, two years in and getting better all the time. I love the fact that I’ve got to know so many different people from all over the world, all genuinely into the music and mostly all good, decent people. We are all the same fundamentally, underneath it all. I just wish everyone realised that! We’re all brothers abs sisters really. Thanks for watching and commenting. Good to know you!

I've actually had the pleasure of meeting Martin Lopez a couple of times here in Stockholm. He was never really a classic metal drummer to start with. That's one of the reasons old Opeth was so incredibly good. He did his thing, lots of cymbal work with some latino influences, with Opeths weird progressive metal (ofc some dubble stroke kick drumming involved at times). In Soen he can be more relaxed I suppose, with more groove.

Good thing their new album comes out tomorrow, I also recommend you listening to Jinn, Vitriol, Sectarian, and The Others Fall if you want a more heavier sound from them.

Greetings from Finland! Just found your channel and I like it. I really see when you really enjoy the song and that is really nice! I noticed that here isn't Alcest yet so I recommend it. Maybe that song called "Autre Temps" is good start to listen that band. Also if you haven't hear yet the song called "The Depth of Self-Delusion" from Riverside, I really recommended it. And because you haven't touch Mastodon just because the name, I'm sure you haven't try Mustache. They got alot good song and it's hard to say what would be best. But if I have to say one or die, I would recommended “Feared and Hated"!

Hi Jim. Great reaction as always :-) Just discovered this band myself and I am rapidly growing into a fan. I started with their latest release Lotus and then worked my way backwards. Great music. Going to see them on my local music joint in March, expect it to be awesome. Agree that his voice fit the music perfectly. As for the comment on Opeth and heavier stuff. They have done both and I would urge you to listen to the whole Damnation album. If you want to react I can make it easier for you and pick just one song, "To Rid the Disease". And, when I am at it… Katatonia, one of my other favorites. You have made a couple of reactions but none on their more recent work I think. Their vocalist Jonas Renkse has this calm distinct voice that fit the music perfectly. A few suggestions (in no particular order): Decima, Idle Blood, Lethean, My Twin (the list could go on-and-on...) Oystein

If haven’t done it already, I would suggest you do “River” by Soen. Without a doubt the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard in my life, it’s one of those that’ll climb to the top of your favorites list and linger on your heart for awhile. The “Lotus” album is genuinely brilliant album, not a thing out of place and everything is done perfectly as you would expect with Soen. It’s a real gift and I cannot say I have felt that way about many albums. Only three really “Lotus” by Soen, “Fear of a Blank Planet” by Porcupine Tree and “Blackwater Park” by Opeth

Great song. Probably should of started with Sectarian to really experience Soen first hand.
Lucidity is the soft track off their 3rd album. They do one each album of this caliber.
The Words is similar to this as well and Lotus of their latest release.
My recommendation to indulge their more prog rock side would be Oscillation, Sectarian or The Others Fall.

One of their best songs, I would say. It sounds like something. I can't put my finger on it. It does have that Caligula horse/arcane feel and maybe lunatic soul. Is it pineapple thief or gazpacho?

  • @pasit1738

I've heard Soen every know and then, but the first touch wasn't that earth moving, so haven't really dug into them. Perhaps I should. Really good sound, bass a bit too prominent, but then again, you never know what's the real reason. Is it the same on the album version, I need to check out. My earphones are studio-standard, Beyerdynamic DT250. Bought these, when I notices Steven Wilson using them while recording his latest album. I checked the price and was surprised to find out them cost just about 160 €! These are really good sounding, robust and most importantly, not picking out bass or anything. I recommend everyone getting these! (This is not a pre-payed commersial... :oD)

Their second album was my favorite, I have yet to hear their 4th album. I like them a lot but I have a love hate relationship with the singer. Sometimes I wish he add some dynamics to his voice and change his tone a bit. After a while he starts to sound the same, would love to see him challenge himself.

  • @clericduran

Soen keeps me busy between Tool Albums. I have always felt Soen had this Pink Floyd rock/jazz sound to them. I have not listened to their most recent album but I believe Tellurian and Lykaia in this category. If you want more Floyd feel, check out Paragon from the same album. Their first album was compared by many as a “Tool ripoff” but they really came into their own after the first album. Wish they would tour here in the states. If you like this song check out The Words by Soen from Tellurian

    Hi Jim,
Since you said that you may have expected a Opeth heavier sound, you may want to take a listen to Opeth's 1st all melodic progressive rock album "Damnation" (2003), or tracks off "Still Life" (1999); "Benighted" or "Face of Melinda" for something unexpected ;). Someone also suggested the song "Burden" (off Watershed), which is one of my all time faves, and ex-keyboardist Per Wiberg does a fantastic Hammond solo! VERY soulful song.
I have been a fan of Soen since their debut "Cognitive" (being such a huge fan of Opeth and missing Martin Lopez), but I have only heard a few tracks off this last album. If you take a listen to their 1st 2 albums, the obvious "comparison" with another VERY popular band will probably strike you, but in my opinion they have a heavier sound. This was a cool track, and yes, very different and even more moody :).
