But Mark still fu*king rocks, even with all the health situations, the guy played clean and crystal almost all songs and the vocals, really, maximum respect #himynameismark
Yeah I think I Miss You was his biggest struggle, probably with the monitor mix. Though he’s often struggled a little with that one I suppose!
No super famous band or singer should be using auto tune. Imperfections add authenticity.
Yeah but everyones uses it so its a no brainer
@@nathanhollow0 Not everyone. NOFX has never used it. They still embrace the true DIY punk stuff. Mistakes and, sometimes, crappy vocals being a part of it. Green Day is another band that never uses any auto-tune or pre-recorded tracks. They use a full touring band that always appears onstage to fill out their sound. Heck, Jason White had been touring with them since the late '90s and they still sound TERRIFIC live.
@@mcigloo I do just wanna comment on that, Green Day has _dabbled_ with autotune. Their 2010 21st Century Breakdown tour used it, and you can hear that come across in various proshots from that tour and the Awesome as Fuck CD. Some examples: ruclips.net/video/X8i6kwl_7Us/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/dZW0zz_wjok/видео.html
However, besides that one outlier tour, Green Day has been pretty "clean" with autotune, not using it since, and I'm *completely* on-board with what you're saying dude. I see so many people say "Everyone uses it nowadays" and it's so untrue, that's just not true. 95% of those shitty modern pop artists use it but even then _One_ _Direction_ managed to stay away from it live, you can just tell, there's no tuning going on here: ruclips.net/video/l2ozTM7NsvY/видео.html (The guitarist also misses the first few chords while he's still plugging in his guitar). And from my looking through, I've been unable to find a single performance where they are! Quite surprisingly actually, it looks like they're pretty legit on that front.
In terms of backing tracks, I don't understand at all what the big deal people have with that is. You're still hearing the "real" uncorrected talent of every member on-stage, who cares if there's extra layers playing in the back behind them? I don't get why people are so against that, that's just so inconsequential. Green Day does have a few things backing tracked, like the tremolo for Boulevard of Broken Dreams (or at least did), but I honestly couldn't care less about that.
All this said, to be clear I don't blame blink-182 for it. I don't necessarily like them less, I just wanted to add this further to the comment!
Agreed
Imagine paying a stupidly expensive ticket for listening this band using auto tune. 🤣
This video was super interesting. Not only because it was Blink related but because you went into a bit of how live sets are setup through Ableton or Pro Tools. I play in a small DIY band and had no idea all of that was possible. I'll have to check more into it. Thanks for the video!
The amount that was used for most of the set was absolutely fine, I find! Absolutely. Also - I feel like Tom's attitude to blink has changed. Better energy, caring a little more about bringing energy. I love the aggressiveness in his voice through much of this set - something I feel I've missed since pre-first-hiatus. It's great!
Checking this weekend's performance, it's clear that the amount of auto-tune on First Date was unintentional, as they has a "normal amount" of auto tune this time!
agreed I didnt even notice and was confused where people got the idea from haha
@ted westhaven faking? It’s not lip sync
They added extra auto tune to First Date because Tom hates playing that song live lol so they had some fun with it.
Second person I hear telling me that. I had no idea he hated that song hahah
@@JulianGrimmMusic he also hates All The Small Things lmao
And you know that for 100% certainty? Lol
@@stewartross13 yes, he’s talked about disliking them both.
He said that he does not want to be 40+ and singing about taking girls to first dates. And he was on a rant and probably on drugs. Promoting his new ego. Not sure if its still this way…
I could only hear it on first date. More seems like someone on the main outboard had probably done it. Think the whole set was pretty awesome to be honest, I prefer the backing Tracks, really brings songs like I miss you to life.
I do like the backing tracks as well. But they are a big enough band to hire a keyboard player like Green day.
@@JulianGrimmMusic 500%
all the small things has some great fucking keyboard shit, and that would shine live
They should've removed the drum backing track for Feeling This. On the second verse Travis' snare hits weren't on time with the backing track snare hits.
@@JulianGrimmMusic yeah I did think about them having extra crew in the back for extra keys and guitars, but I guess it’s blink, should only be the 3 of them. I think with green day we were eased into it with Jason freese being present for years before we then saw keyboards in the back too. But yeah I do agree. Sum 41 sound technically solid and full now they have 3 guitars at times and Tom on keys when needed. 🤘🤘
@@wotterpovs i'm watching i'm feeling this and they only show travis twice during 2nd verse, once at beginning at once at end, both looked good to me. can you be more specific?
Very cool video, fun to watch.
I’m gonna see Blink in October and I hope that kind of accident won’t happen again because that robot voice does not fit their style at all IMO.
But I’m so glad they’re back!
Ooh yeah!
@Tom Dawg either that or the sound guy made a massive mistake and it wouldn’t surprise me
Sound guys at festivals don’t always seem to know what they’re doing
@Tom Dawg did he hate the song less this past weekend? 😅 I don’t think that argument makes much sense. Especially not on their first comeback gig.
Hey, cool video! If you have any insight on how the whole backing track situation for such a show might be set up, i think it could make for an interesting video - I always wondered how they start the click on time between the banter moments and get the backing tracks to kick in on time
With a lot of practice and good production guys 👌
Love your stuff Julian 👍
Great approach man !
What surprised me the most was the fact that 1) They didn’t use automation for the auto tune to cue on and off, especially for when he’s not singing. And 2) Why it wasnt humanized more to balance out the retune speed. However, a band that size, auto tune is most definitely being dealt with on the FOH/monitor side. I’m sure it was 100% clean vocals in their in ears where they would’ve had no clue it was happening that bad.
That might be true!
Interesting. I haven't thought of that before. Shouldn't it be on the iems as well? But i guess it'd be on the artist's preference to hear it on their in ears
Generally when using auto tune for live purposes, you only want to hear your clean vocals. This avoids trying to sing with the auto tune, because it will potentially screw up the notes you’re trying to sing. For example, wow I’m singing way to sharp I need to bring it down, when I’m reality it’s the auto tune bringing you sharp because you didn’t realize you were singing flat. It’s not the case for bands that 100% run sound on their own, because they want to hear the auto tune in case something gets screwed up. But for bands this size, the autotune is solely being run by one of their FOH guys for sure. The band is completely oblivious to what it’s sounding like to the crowd.
@@ThomasLinnaneMusic I ve got fairly good ears for stuff like that, maybe I was carried away seeing my childhood band in 2023 reunited, but I only clocked it around First Date, and I feel like the engineer messed up some settings because it was cutting thru too strong, I do not mind it personally, but was really strange how it did not cut out for the time he was not singing but speaking. Crazy times
i think they made it so clear cuz the years has past and for a lot of blink fans it its obvious that tom delonge can't sing those songs nowadays without sounding as a british donald duck xD
i think it was a statement instead of a mistake
Yo this was such a fun video - love your energy!
You can’t do what we do lol hahaha, they had a great few sets!! Love the video🔥❤️🤘🏾
eu escutei um pouco em first date mas o show foi mto bom! e cada video que vejo seu tu me faz querer mudar pro ableton live! tu é genio
Valeu mano!
I'm just happy to see them together again.
They’re absolutely incredible regardless. They did make it a little too intense for Coachella FOR SURE.
True!
Haha I loved this video! So funny!
Thank you!
It's a part of Tom's style now, he's been doing this forever for AVA. He brought something from his own band. This is what makes reunions special.
That’s what I was thinking. They’re just trying to win the appreciation of the 2023 kids, they aren’t pitch correcting. But I still think they used too much of it.
He did not use it live for AvA in the glory days
@@J.Braxton Yes he actually did. There's multiple videos from 2007 onward of him using insane amounts of autotune in live performances, even more than this
@@joshmcbride2713 Tom has used way more autotune live than this before.
@@mattpunk931 for sure, maybe doing a short set at some recording studio, but not on the main tours
Great video, thanks for the explanation, First Date drove me nuts 😂
Thanks!
Julian, would there antares be running through a uad apollo then midi triggered through abelton live for the song keys?
Nice video man, I discussed this subject as well :) But I really can't believe the sound person wasn't monitoring the whole concert :O
I just watch their 2nd Cochella performance, and thankfully they toned down the autotune on First Date and it sounded so much better.
For sure! Much better!
Beyond the opinions about autotunes, voices, blink, Tom... your video is great. You explain things really cool and its well worked. Nice
I’m gonna see them live in Toronto this week! Interested to see if they will use auto tune again
Also thought toms tone and voice was really good specially on reckless abandon. And man overboard was incredible
Reckless abando was the best!
Great video bro!
Thanks!
Word, dude, to all the points you made there haha.
Thanks man!
I bet you are brazilian cause of your accent- same as mine :) .. Nice video!! keep it up!!
Can you tell us what is going up Tom’s mic? The white covering is just decoration to disguise whatever he has running up the stand. There’s something attached to the side of the mic, almost looks like a tall box tube but it’s not. Obv this device has something to do with his vocal rig.
Yes in some songs and it sounded awesome, one of the best most solid performances I’ve seen in my life.
I agree 100% with your opinion at the end of the video. It’s not that they shouldn’t use it, it’s about using it the best way possible. Tom’s voice aways sucked at live concerts, and he completely lost the signature tone he had on his prime, so anything that can help him perform is more then welcome. I’m sure autotune can help them deliver a better quality to the concerts comparing to what they delivered in the first reunion. I’m pretty sure they are already fixing it since they didn’t play first date on weekend 2. If you heard anything weird on weekend 2 too I would be happy if you point out, I love to find this little details. 😅
Hahaha, good job catching that!!! I did not hear it myself.
Thanks man!
@@JulianGrimmMusicI don't think he used it now
Tom, in his 50's actually did take vocal lessons before the last AVA tour and he was much better live on that tour. I have a feeling by the end of blink tour hell sound pretty good
He's only 46 or 47.
Mark is in his 50s not Tom
U were right
I don't really think they used loads, Tom sounded naturally good. He used way more during recent Angels and Airwaves performances.
he was using also man.... did you watch that live that AVA did? Pure autotune hehe... but still awesome for me man!
This video is amazing. Perfection. Are you Brazilian? (Pai de gato in your bio)
Valeu! Sou sim!
@@JulianGrimmMusic ahh que foda!!! inglês perfeito!!! Eu só desconfiei pelo texto em português mesmo. Video foda demais :))) Parabéns
@@marconileo hahaha valeu!
you forgot to mention that it is possible to program notes in the DAW, in which autotune should tune
Totally cool with them using AT. Same as everyone else just happy to see the boys back
I have been a fan since 1998. I welcome blink using auto tune. I can finally watch a live video of them that I can tolerate. I would also embrace them hiring backup musicians, even if they’re off stage, to fill the sound and maybe hide the shenanigans
They already have free backing tracks of themselves playing to fill out the songs.
That's what I was torn on for a bit. I mean if you're making a lot of money selling tickets maybe you should like rehearse and take care of your voice. Maybe down-tune some songs to match your current vocal prowess...but also those reunion vids from 10 years ago are so hard to watch. Tom sounded so bad that I don't really ever want to risk hearing that again.
Hello 👋 Excellent video its very funny. I did notice that Mark kind of didn’t follow Tom’s jokes, only when he told the Dalai Lama Joke. I laughed when I heard First date 😂😂😂
Thanks! 😃
Thank you.. They sounded great, but there is no harm to being transparent about why. Good video..
I used to stay in mIRC downloading every footage new that i could in 2000's, i saw every footage possible available in 2000's, i stoped to listen since 2005 cause every song remind me the best time of my life 17 years old, and when "I miss you" came out in that album(with some good songs tho) i HATED, and i could NOT listen the new-mid-2010 cause tom sang with EGG in his mouth. And i didnt realized this auto tune, so thanks so much. But is so much better than tom singing bad, but the mistakes in the guitar still there hehehe. But they made me learn how to play guitar and they changed my life.
Nice video man!!!
Great video, just noticed this watching the set. The great thing about Blink is we don't mind, just love seeing them all together. As you mentioned they aren't known (Tom) for live vocals. I remember seeing them in Reading Festival around 2013 and, well, Tom's vocals definitely were not in tune lol but I think it's almost welcomed as we all like him and blink so much. I think he's the only singer than can get away with singing way off key and everyone loving it (me included!) - I will add, it was nice hearing 'feeling this' more as we know it and his vocals do sound better. Can't wait for the album!!!
I can’t wait for it too!
They finally sound good, so I don't mind. Seeing them live in September in Cologne.
They sounded amazing (except for First Date and the piano a little bit loud in Down)
Edging was better than studio version.
I can't believe they played dysentery gary and reckless abandon
Reckless abandon got me seriously emotional
Such a bad ass set!
First thing I noticed on the Coachella official video was it didnt sound like normal Blink live lol
Lol
They're probably using waves rack and using waves real-time tune is pretty standard for big shows like that you also probably couldn't hear it as much in the house. A lot of the times the front-of-house engineer is also doing a stream mix off a matrix or something and it always sounds different in the house
Yep that’s definitely a possibility
Sorry i quite Bad earing in english so... all show had autotune or just in first date ?
The whole show
On First Date Tom did this for fun, and it seems that everybody got trolled. No way in hell that would be a mistake. On other songs they had some help but it was subtle.
I have nothing against using auto tune and I use it for fun all the time!
It’s an easy mistake, stuff like that happens every once in a while for many touring artists. I think the fact that it was fixed for this weekend’s show points towards that it wasn’t on purpose.
Only noticed it on first date not so much the others, but either way they sounded brilliant and tight as a band again for sure!
Backing track also. During EDGING in the bridge, the picky guitar parts can hear but Toms not playing them.
For sure
good videos
I watched the entire stream and it never went anything like this
Omg this made laugh so hard, I was literally crying!! 😅😂😂😂
As a playback tech, everyone is using Autotune. Artists want the audience to enjoy the show and artists are also human beings. Singing is hard, people would either be upset about it being not good enough or "too perfect". Their settings def weren't set well but usually it can be pretty minimal. Using AT live should be normalized!! This was def extreme though xD
I know. Im even thinking about starting to use it myself. Im tired of hitting wrong notes lol!
@@JulianGrimmMusic It's a nice little fail safe. We use it so it's barely audible but just gives a bit more comfort when performing! Just make sure to have an ISO split so you can have a direct vocal line incase something happens hahah
except real singers. miley cyrus is not using autotune.
@@hallio111 she probably does even the tiniest bit!
"everyone is using Autotune" haha, ok, I'm assuming you never heard metal bands live. Using AT should never be normalized... if so, just let an AI bot sing them...
I noticed that in the first show. But I was trying to discover what he was using as effect. Anyway, it was not bad!
Julian from the strokes uses auto tune live. I don't think the first date thing was on purpose, it was probably a mistake on the preset. Something always goes wrong when they play first date live lmao
I still remember Tom’s guitar going out at a VMA or something and he singing… “where the f is my guitar?” Instead of the first date lyrics Hahah
@@JulianGrimmMusic i knew u were an og fan too LOL
What is outa tune. ?
Vamos a ver... Aún no veo este video pero yo también quedé con mis dudas de si usaron o no, al menos tom 🤔
I'm pretty sure it was just for that song or maybe a couple of other ones because the rest of the set you can hear Tom singing out of tune in some notes
i just checked out the video, damn i think the auto tune glitch is all over the song from start to finish, the sound engineered somehow forgot to correct it in the middle of their performance haha
Weird right?
Interesting. Very nice analysis, nice work, loved it! As for Blink, well, I'm divided to be honest. I really really like live style from Tom, all that "wrong" tones, "wrong" words... that made it special to see them live... This goes off to me, like, rock should be played live as it can gets... I guess like GNR, I better stick to the past performances to enjoy the bands... (not saying gnr uses auto tune, but axl sucks live now).
Thanks man!
I should say I watched the show with the same expectation as you (also an old fan here). I think they just didn't want to take any risks in this return (remember the backlash on Tom's voice and guitar playing in 2010?). Just imagined they would use autotunes and backing tracks because it's just what Tom did with AVA on that livestream from 2021 (and it sounded pretty good). Guess they just decided Blink couldn't sound bad again this time. Considering how this performance was acclaimed, kind of think they were right.
Yes that makes sense
2010 Tom did not give one fuck and made 0 effort everyone uses auto tune don’t know what the big deal is
They should use it. Big fan, and I think they should use live tuning. They've improved but theyre much better in the studio.
Try to hear back their concert mark tom and travis show.... Its been there since then..
This was a fun watch. You are incredibly close to what is happening, but there is a really hilarious twist as to how this automation actually works that will blow your fucking mind.
You dont need a DAW for this Vocal pedals like the Boss VE-1 can do amazing things, auto tune, add layers and harmonies, fatten vocals, echos etc.....all good in my view ...i hope they use it when i see em
I think they were using a computer or a rack unit
A little sinus surgery this morning.... In the past, sometimes people noticed me making weird faces on stage while I sing, it's because I have to pop my ears to equalize the pressure, so i can hear. So today, they went in and reshaped my sinus and enlarged my eustachian tubes. Should all be fixed now, but this shit def sucks today. Pretty uncomfortable at this moment. Lots of red..
Past IG post from Tom. I know he hates First Date but maybe the surgery wasn’t super successful and he needs a little help getting in tune?
It’s always First Date that messes up live. MTV Awards in 2001, Epicenter in 2010 and now Coachella in 2023 😂
This is the momentum of the first live concert after a long time without Tom. so they deliberately made it like that to make it viral. this is very genius way..
Do you think?
@@JulianGrimmMusic ya, everyones knows, they are ridiculous with all their gimmicks. it has become their character.
blink has used backing tracks since 2009. And they don't preprogram midi changes. Tom does his own switching on his Axe FX, and Mark's tech switches his Quad Cortex
how can you be so fucking incorrect in so few words?
Great video 😂 I saw a full video of Rock Show and it has to be a joke. The entire thing is insanely auto tuned and Tom seems like he’s playing into it with the way he’s singing.
I think he’s just accepted that he needs auto tune now and it’s trying to enjoy it
I think they knew the autotune was cranked on that song, tom famously hates first date so I can imagine he would love to screw around with it
I didn’t know he hated it. I wonder why they play it.
yeah hes said he hates all the small things & first date because he doesn’t get why their such big hits because he said he’s written better songs.
I'm pretty sure it's only Tom. If you listen to some of the clips of the more recent Chicago show Mark's vocal sounds dry and when he goes into talking it is clean as well.
i don't fucking care THEY'RE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I honestly couldn't care less if they use autotune and/or backing tracks. I think the only thing that matters is if it sounds good. It does, so well done!
Good video, it was interesting. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Yes.
it was great simply
I love how when you say "autotone" or "out of tune" it sounds the same 😅
Na hora do refrão, eu lembrei da música do Daft Punk "one more time" kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Hahhaha
first of all, independent professional production companies get contracted by Coachella for both the video walls, and for the livestream. they work with another independent professional audio company that run production for the event...that splits between A/V people running lights/video walls, gaffers, monitors, Front Of House (FOH) PA....like we're talking so many different running parts that are umbrella'd by different private companies....and usually the only part of the music industry that's unionized (but that's a different story).....anyway point is that the professional production company had access to the raw board PA and raw board monitor mix, which means they could mix the show themselves....and the livestream somehow sounds worse than the random crowd iphone videos uploaded to youtube.
because blink-182 are a pop PUNK band, they play loud and fast and hard, and have chaotic music which leads to chaotic live performances. if you watch the iphone videos, it's really not that noticeable until a handful of rewatch's. that's the problem with us in society just existing in this privileged bootleg space of the digital age. we've been tricked into believing that there MUST be a digital footprint of every major performance art event. nothing can live in the ephemera of the space anymore....kinda funny because the art of film making, music, and performance art have shifted to "content" because the digital age treats art as a disposable commodity. anyway....
to belabor the point, the autotune used in the live performance was pretty subtle, and in the chaos of the scene not really note-worthy of the performance, and thus not a big deal. like whatever. these are dudes who in their mid to late 40's singing about high school. the whole concept of blink's continued existence lives in the absurd. they're also a POP punk band. call me when they go back to using real amps, not racks of digital pre-sets. Kemper is pretty much the same as auto-tune for guitars...but the only people complaining about that are boomers on guitar forms who say "you can tell because tube amps sound better".
If Axl Rose had had access to Auto Tune, in the early 90's live he would have saved his voice.
Honestly doesn’t bother me, blink is blink, what they do is their own business, still a badass band!
For sure
Haha damn you are so right. I was wondering about this. They never sounded good live. I’m not sure I mind so much though. Is it really better to have the shit sound?
As I said in the video. I prefer they use it lol
Listen to a Hendrix records, naked in the balcony at 12 am. Thats music
This is a good demo of exactly what I noticed during the set. It was those First Date wobbles that had me tilting my head a bit. That said, this doesn't bother me. I want to see certain bands for how tight and clean they sound live, but for other bands, I'm not there because they are world-class musicians, but because I just love the hell out of them and their music is catchy. The Coachella sets were really fantastic and I'm here for Blink until the end, regardless of auto-tune or backing tracks.
This video was great :) ignore the haters
Thanks! I appreciate it!
We see Blink 182 again on Weekend 2 👌🏻
Oooh yeaaahhh!
i think its a tom thing. he used it during the AVA stuff, and its all preference. seeing them live is still a great moment, since they still have fun, they still sing all the great songs, and its an amazing experience.
Great Evangelion poster in the back ,yes I said that in autotune effect

Yea and they should use more! Auto tune is great!
Should they go full on t-Pain? I’d pay to see that!
First date especially the end sounds like more of a joke to me.
It’s pretty clear with the more recent sets they aren’t using pitch correction though, or if they are it’s very seldom.
For Tom especially they should use it though - he has great conviction in his voice and album performances are really good. I don’t think it’s realistic that he can recreate that and be on pitch live for all songs.
I’d like to hear you look at Enema and before for pitch correction. I think TOYPAJ on has pitch correction but I’m less sure on Enema - there’s still a lot of doubling and tripling etc that hides pitch a little and it’s to tape I believe.
Whats the point of this video?

backing tracks make sense as they are only a 3 piece.
