  • Surprise, the siren was a Model 2... one that, when fed the wrong voltage, identifies as a Model A. 🤣🥴
I recently acquired this siren to add to my ever-growing collection of noise makers, technically 5 now in total, with one being an experimental work in progress that has been rather neglected since I haven't had the time and, if I'm being honest, motivation to finish. The Model 2 is basically my childhood dream siren, and I'm so happy to finally get my hands on one. As for the mishap... I kinda accidentally kick this siren between the legs and made it scream. I explain the whole situation around this in the video.
After having owned a Model 1 for so long and eventually the Siro-Drone 925, it's odd to now own one of these as it's the most "boring" siren I have in the bunch as far as how many of them are installed around the country compared to the others. Model 1s are pretty rare to find in the wild, although not as rare as previously thought, and the Siro-Drone is pretty much in the same category, whereas Model 2s are everywhere. Another odd thing about this siren is the housing. While my Model 1 was sold under Fedelcode, the housing for it isn't too different from what was sold with the units that came from Federal Electric at the time. Both were made to be just a bit bigger than the siren core itself, and the design of them are more on the simplistic side of things. The 2's housing is actually bigger and more sophisticated since the collars that these later model sirens come with kind of guide the sound away from the core a lot better. Once the collars are stripped from the 2, it is possible to fit the siren into the 1's housing and vice versa.
One thing that caught me off guard with this siren was the noise, weight, and size ratio compared to the others. This thing is about an inch smaller in diameter than the Model 1 and weighs almost half as much. The 925 is the biggest of the 3 and weighs about the same as the Model 1. The diameters of them all respective of size is 13', 9', and roughly 8'. Despite this, the 2 actually edges out the 925 by a bit because of how fast it runs and the open intake on the top and bottom of the chopper. It absolutely blows the 1 out of the water, although this technically isn't a fair comparison considering the 1 can't quite get up to full speed anymore, probably because it's just shy of being a century old, and is wired to run backward. I wasn't expecting it to be as loud as it was, and I think once I run it on the transformer, correctly this time 🥴, it might have a tad bit more speed and SPL that can be squeezed out. It's loud enough as is that the reverb from the wind-down noticeably echos further out into the neighborhood in the remote recording. While it does run on the outdoor receptacle and peak at a decent pitch, I did notice the voltage dip was making the lights in the house on that line dim substantially. The breaker did not trip, but I would feel more comfortable running it on the transformer and on the 240V line that feeds our heat pump to avoid the issue altogether.

Wow! Never heard a Model 2 do that before! I use a step up/down transformer for my Model 2 as well. Glad you got your dream siren! Nice video!

Oh lord, this has gotta be the highest pitched model 2 recorded lmao. So that’s what happens when you run these things on double the voltage lol. Sounds pretty good on 120 tho!

Why was that 120v model 2 was on 240v?

@@cooldomino1800 I explained it in the video. Basically the voltage selection switch is installed upside down. I pushed it over to the side labeled as the 220V setting on the transformer, however that ended up being the 110V setting. That sent 240V directly to the 120V outlets and doubled the voltage to the European 240V outlets so they were putting out 480V. The 220V setting halves the voltage, so if I hook it up to 120V with that setting it will send 60V to the 120V outlets and 120 to the 240 ones.
