    So solving this without a calculator seems like it would be very difficult...

      That's why you need to simplify the original equations, both in the substitution step and when taking the derivative. Furthermore to actually find the minimum value you need to include domain and some sort of conclusion statement that isn't included in this video e.g. "f has absolute minimum at x because f' is negative on (some value, 6.35) and positive on (6.35, infty).

    What about using y+8 instead of y, as in splitting the height value into two parts like was done to the x? Would that give the same values? Would the proportions have to be different?

    You explain the problem solving method well. But it's hard to follow .... because you don't write smaller and keep all your steps on ONE pg.See any of V Biezen Videos and you will see how he does it..

    Explained very well but a minor mistake is that the critical number is the fourth root of 256 and not the cube root of 256

    I have been trying to solve this problem for a while now. The distance between my building and the ladder is 3ft. So i followed every step obviously using the 3ft, and I got to z=sqrt(226.1779) or z=15.0392. However, when I entered the number into the online quiz, the quiz says that my answer is incorrect. So I ask, is this number correct?

      +Dennis Bonilla Lamboy I used 3 and got z = sqrt(224.765008) = 14.992. Does that work?

      +WNY Tutor Yes it did... what did I do wrong, I had been doing the problem over and over for an hour. How much did you get for x? I got x=256^(1/3). Maybe I got it right up to there.

      +Dennis Bonilla Lamboy x should equal (192)^(1/3). Maybe you made a mistake when you simplified 8(3+x)/x while using chain rule to calculate the derivative.

      +WNY Tutor Oh wow, yes, while simplifying 8(x+3)/x when distributing the 8 I think I kept doing 8 times 4 in my mind, hence I got a 32 like in the video. 8*3 is 24, that times the other 8 you get at the end is 192. There we go. Such a simple mistake. Thank you a lot!

    Why is it 4+x where it could have been just 4 only? I can't see why is it necessary for it to have an x since it is stated in the given that the distance is 4ft? Your quick response would be appreciated
