I made a video on this movie myself where I talk about how Man of Steel is basically three different acts. Or three different character arcs if you prefer. The first is about him learning to hope. The second is about him learning to have faith. And the third is him learning to become the best of both worlds.
I think you captured how I felt about Superman as a character in that I always liked him but felt like he was a bit of a goody two shoes. Man of Steel was really the first time I felt a connection to him and really saw myself in him. Well done and keep up the good work.

I really think a lot of it was leftover nostalgia for the Reeve Superman, after the terrible Superman Returns.
Routh really did an excellent Reeve impersonation.
Man of Steel came less than ten years later, with such a different take on the character, and even the Kent’s, that many cried, “not my Supes!”
Comic book readers, shouldn’t have been so shocked, as many versions of Superman had been written by then. It was Snyder that most folks didn’t like, especially after Sucker Punch, and I think it hurt how his movie was viewed.
I just looked at it as how this Superman was being told. DC had a multiverse for quite awhile at that point, so the differences were a good thing to me.

I'm delighted to see someone defending and praising Man of Steel, which has been undeservedly hated on for so long. Although it may be a slight diversion from the traditional depiction of Superman, it did a great job at depicting a more human interpratation of the character. Man of Steel to this day is my favorite superhero film and one of my favorite movies ever. I love everything about it. I feel like Zack got the job of directing this movie at the right time... He had several films before it that got him to a place mentally to pull off what is by far the best Superman movie. It had weight. The world felt lived in. The people felt and acted and reacted like I believe real people would to an impossible situation. Everything from the Kryptonian opening segment to Clark's journey.... They way his earth parents were just trying to make sense of it all while keeping him safe and raising him best they could... The invasion... Zack went bananas here. The right cast, the right tone, the right cinematographer, Amir Mokri doesn't get enough credit. Zack has not done a film before or after Man of Steel that looks like this... There's a rawness that Man of Steel has, a worn and lived in texture to it that took him and Mokri joining forces to be realized. I wish he had gone back to Amir for Justice League, hopefully they work together again someday. I want someone to ask him why he and Amir haven't worked together since Man of Steel but I digress. Man of Steel is excellence... I'll die over and over and over on that hill.

I remember watching this for the first time in theatres and being absolutely amazed. Finally the Superman film I've been waiting for. I couldn't wrap my head around the criticism it was receiving aside from maybe that about the gratuitous destruction in the Metropolis fight...but even then I couldn't help but think that kind of damage has been shown countless times in comic books. It all just felt incredibly nitpicky because the film tried to do something different from what was done back in 1978.

This is the best breakdown and explanation of not only why this movie is so great but what they were actually going for with this interpretation of the character. Thank you so much for that. This movie is so misunderstood that I'm just over trying to explain it to people.
This was the movie that made me love the character of Superman. I related so much to this movie and this version of Clark. It came out during a really bad time in my life, getting over a break up, feeling lonely, once loving people and then growing bitter and disliking people in general. In my life I always knew I wanted to help people and worked towards it but after that break up I lost my way and became bitter and angry. Then I saw this movie and it just renewed my life's purpose. It brought me out of the darkness in my life, and it gave me hope in a time where I felt hopeless. Everything that Superman stands for. Believe me, when those doors of the scout ship open and Clark emerges as Superman for the first time, I was just in awe. This movie will always hold a special place in my heart and made me understand why this character is so important to us all.

In regards to the neck snapping and the “because he can”, I’d disagree with that. My argument has always been that Clark in that moment literally does not know what else to do. It’s an impulse decision he makes to save that family. Maybe it was a mistake, but humans make mistakes.

Clark literally had no options. I still chuckle at peoples belief that he could have led him to a dessert to minimize the destruction when Zod was clearly on a genocidal rampage to destroy humankind and would not have fallen for that ploy at all. Also, he was bred to be a warrior and his momentum in gaining all of Superman's abilities and mastering them in conjunction with lifelong training would have eclipsed Superman's abilities quickly. Respect for not putting a Disney bow on the end of it all (then again... maybe he and Lois could have gone for shawarmas after all that destruction to lighten the mood).

What I loved about Man of Steel was exactly what most folks seemed to hate about it. Superman was not all good, not all knowing, and he struggles greatly with how his powers are so mismatched and dangerous to the people around him. I especially loved how his parents foresaw the struggle he would have early on and how his father's guidance is mainly structured in a way to protect his son first. People see it as cynical and not representative of Superman's ideals, but I see it as a more powerful and realistic element to the difficulties of having a Superman in our modern society and what that means for Superman himself. While I think the film struggles from a structural standpoint with it's last act, I don't think it makes the analysis of his character any less interesting or meaningful. Especially considering that the fallout from the last act and more is explored in BvS, who's philosophy I also enjoyed after being exposed to saccharine Marvel films for 10 years (even though it still has its problems as a film)

Around 18:40..."we have to feel the weight of his (Superman's) power." Yes!! And the consequence of it. That's what makes the films divisive. People don't want to come to terms with the fact that when superheroes do anything, there is a cost, a reaction, there are consequences to their actions. Batman beats people, but no one wants to think what happens to these thugs afterward. It would be illogical to think no one ever dies at the hands of Batman, or that Batman can never be jaded enough to see himself become the villain. Same with Superman. A God-Like alien fighting in the sky above cities will lead to unintended consequences. Some people don't want to know and all Zack did was show it. To make Clark relatable, he needs to be like us, and have feelings about how the world sees him. He has to ultimately make the choice to be Superman, and his experiences shape that. That's how Superman should be written.
Truth makes people angry. And once some of the audience is angry, they will nitpick your film. Those same things happen in other superhero films, but those other films are "fun and light," which makes the viewer feel good, so they think positively about even a very mediocre film. It's why Marvel gets away with making mostly forgettable middle of the road films, that stick to a formula and rarely takes chances.
When people talk about not liking MOS, they are angry about it. They get so angry, they started hating the man that made it, therefore they are incapable of being unbiased when he makes another movie. I've never seen a director get so much negativity and hatred and it tends to happen before anyone has seen a frame of the movie.
Snyder takes big swings at the risk of missing. He has a vision. I would take this over what WB did to the movies after Zack left. I've never read so many comments over 10 years that echo this sentiment of this video. MOS made people that didn't care for Superman before, actually like him now. Snyder and Nolan brought an 85 year old character into this century.

My issues with Man of Steel is that its very faded. Destruction can happen in movies and that's fine.
Even Superman killing is kind of alright.
Stuff like Supermans dad telling him not to save children. That bugs at me.
I think the biggest problem with these movies, is we're probably never going to see a superman that's learned how to limit collateral damage in his movies.
I like the movie. There are some amazing shots. It really hit with the action and feel of the strength of the kryptonian powers.
But there are some issues with it.

@@garethhughes7430 Such a misconception with his dad and the saving the bus dialogue. He never said for Clark to not save them. He said “maybe”. As in, he doesn’t know. Pa Kent as a FATHER doesn’t know if his SON should risk his entire future by revealing himself and saving others, OR if he should stay safe and just have let them die. There’s no answer there. Most ppl, especially parents wouldn’t know what to do in that context. Whether you agree w it or not it is what it is but let’s not lie or misconstrue what happened

@Aureo-nt1gy telling him people will fear him rather than guiding him to help people is the opposite of being a good father. It's not misconstrued, it's how that scene is meant to be felt. Look at how ZS views superman in interviews. If you're making a movie you should try not to look down on everything that came before, especially when you're a worse writer and director than most.
Pa Kent, as a character, should never see saving children's lives as a maybe. Saying its realistic or true to parenthood ignores the truth of the character and what superman is supposed to mean.

@@garethhughes7430 the idea that MOS and BvS was trying to get across culminates at the scene where Clark walks in the snowy mountains in BvS and has a talk with his Father's ghost. Jonathan tells a story about how a big storm came, and they were able to stop the flooding on the farm and divert the water. And while they celebrated, the horses on the Lang farm were drowning, because they diverted it toward them.
Its idealistic to think you'll save someone and it doesn't have an affect on something else. Even with the best of intentions, your actions create a ripple effect.
This is the lesson Clark's father is teaching, not "save someone, no matter the cost. Don't think about what happens later."
In MOS, Clark saves the city, and the world, but it has a cost. This theme runs throughout. Lois says the same things to Clark while in the bath tub in BvS.
That's the idea. The point of putting a Superman in a real world, is that it does have consequences. There would be people that see him as a God, or a Devil. People don't like the idea that Superman may do things they can lead to a bad outcome. We are not used to that.
Reeve's Superman reversed time to save one life, never thinking of the ripple effect. But, it's out of sight, out of mind. He gave up his powers for one person, without thinking of what effect it would have on the world.
All Synder did was put Clark in a world where he'd actually have to consider his actions, and no matter what he decides, it will affect the world, good or bad.
By Jonathan saying "maybe," he isn't telling Clark he shouldn't have saved those kids. He wasn't saying " you made a mistake." But, he was telling him to consider that whatever he does can change things, because people don't always react positively, even when your intentions are good. If anyone of the parents of the kids in the bus wanted to, they could have outed Clark, and the government would have been all over the farm. Possibly obtained Kryptonian tech, and used it for nefarious purposes in war, or against it's own citizens. Clearly, this was something already being done after the ship crashed back to earth in MOS, and Lex used that technology to create Doomsday.
So, it wasn't Jonathan being heartless, or teaching Clark he should have let them die. He is only saying "I don't know."
Yes, most of the time Jonathan is portrayed as he is in Smallville, or Lois and Clark, so I understand that it's the ideal version of Jonathan.
Fans of Batman don't have to think about what happens to thugs after Batman beats them up, or when Superman flies through a building. All these movies did was force the viewer and Superman to consider it. And that's what made him more relatable to people that thought Superman was a boring character.
And the idea was for Clark to figure out that, and in doing so, it gives him character development. We only ever see a Superman that makes the right choices on screen. And Reeve's Superman is so embedded in the psyche that any deviation from that is considered blasphemous. And while that is always my preferred version of Superman, it's also what made him not relatable, therefore boring to people.

    • @garethhughes7430
      @garethhughes7430 4 месяца назад +1

@itsalwayssomething7490 of course actions have consequences, you are being ridiculous if you think Snyder is the only person to ever apply that to Superman and Batman, Batman is notorious for accidentally creating villains. That's why Wayne funds prisoner rehabilitation programs, his company hires ex cons and does his best to get people out of crime before he has to stop them. Branding them so they get killed in jail is not "natural consequences" for Batman's actions, it's an insane addition to the character.
As for Superman, he is always aware of the damage his actions can cause, it's something he struggles with but he doesn't let it stop him acting. He tries to divert fights, gets other heroes to run evacuations, uses his powers to get in between his enemies and the innocent and repairs things afterwards.
The idea that you have to be relatable to not be boring is itself nonsense, people tell unrelatable stories all the time and they sell, and the idea that a quiet young man yearning to do good is unrelatable to anyone shows a worldview that is incredibly bleak. You don't need to be a billionaire to relate to Batman, you don't need to fly to relate to Superman.
At the end of the day, Clark is a nice, humble, sometimes tricksy man who actively decides to put on a 'perfect' face for the world, becoming an ideal for people to strive towards. Clarks inner turmoil is not shown in Superman's actions, intentionally.
There are ways to cover these issues without saying that Superman shouldn't try as hard to save people, it's been done countless times in the 100 years he's been written about, Snyder didn't try to do anything new.

I really don't get the hate on Zack Snyder. His movie visuals are amazing, the VFX are so detailed it feels REAL by just watching it. When Superman flew across the sky, breaking the sound barrier, the world engine terraforming Earth, his fight with other Kryptonians, the impact from those scenes it's on a totally different level of quality compared to other superhero films/shows. The writing for his movies they're not bad unlike how some people say it, and the character motives and scenes are easy for regular audience to digest while keeping it's original theme impactful for the story. One of my favourite superhero movies by far. I watch Marvel movies too, they're VERY impressive but non of them can be compared to Man of Steel's visual and style on a stand-alone.
When I'm watching comic book movies I always view them as an Elseworld story instead. I see claims from comic book fans opposing Snyder's character ideas simply cuz "they're not faithful to the original" DUH what's the fun in copy and pasting, plus the characters gets treated like real humans with personal feelings, perspective and ideas trying to uphold their virtue and make the better judgement instead of a drawn character that literally embodies their own virtuous ideals and hardly ever changes. As comic book fans they all should know Elseworld stories HECK one of the universe' Superman is called Ultraman and he's evil, there's also Red Son Superman, a Kryptonian adopted by the Wayne's and became Batman, and many more versions of Superman. Just makes me wonder if they are ACTUALLY fans 😒

People don't think he could be masquerading as one of us. For people most people, Clark Kent is just a guy that kinda looks like Superman. And as for those closest to him, they either can't possibly believe it to be true, even if they suspect it to be possible but not probable, because of the aforementioned reasons, but because some of them, Lois, look right past Clark, even she's talking directly to him. Most versions don't really show Lois looking at Clark for very long. She's a busy woman, and Clark is just kinda there. She never really pays much attention to Clark the way she does Superman.

Thank you for this. Every time I hear somebody say something stupid about this movie it breaks my heart. I don't know if you read comics, but most of the people who don't like Man of Steel haven't read them. Because as great as the movie is cinematically alone, it's friggin accurate to the John Byrne run of Superman from the mid to late '80s and beyond. I've made a few videos on this, but nothing on your level 👏👏👏

Such an underrated film. It's like people can't see the human side of superman besides Clark being "clumsy and goofy"

I saw this movie in the theater on my birthday and my mom got it for me for Christmas and, about once or twice a year, my best friend and I watch it. I love Superman in this movie and I loved General Zod along with Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner as both of Clark’s fathers. I’m so sad this will never get a sequel but I’m glad we got what we could from this story.

Zack Snyder (shamelessly) tried to "Batmanize" his version of Superman, turn him into a brooding depressing loner traveling the world, finds his calling, dark cloudy Metropolis, kills his first villan, cries, smiles like a dumb guy at the end, a combination of bad pacing & an altered David Goyer/Christopher Nolan scirpt resulting in an oblivious third act, that is the divisive debut of "Man Of Steel" (2013).

I get so annoyed by the people who criticize zacks slo mo shots, what the typical “normie” dosent get, is that zack Snyder is actually a comic reader, he loves comics, and dc, just like us fans do, and to me, the way he laid out the movies, and the storytelling, it is very like a comic storyline brought to life, literally, and the slo mo shots, are the equivalent of the “splash pages” in comics, and if you really watch how he uses it, and compare it to a similar comic storyline, you completely see it, and I think it’s absolutely incredible, snd it’s why zack is the 🐐, cause he is the first, and ONLY director IMO, that has actually brought comic books to life, like LITERALLY, not just the story, but the look, feel, atmosphere, like top to bottom, every cbm he’s ever made, from 300 to ZSJL, I feel like I’m going “into” the graphic novel as I watch, it’s a god dam shame the old regime wasted his talent, and used him as scapegoat and turned general public on him, and now as result, we have to wait till he’s done at netflix for new regime to get him back lol #RestoreTheSnyderVerse

Look I like the visuals, and almost everything aestetically about this movie but the initial assessment was correct. This is not superman or Clark Kent, by making Clark Kent "more complex" it robbed him of his most important qualities. Superman man is supposed to be the best of us and is first things first a human, to take that character and make him a lost, wondering and confused character is wrong.
It is little actions and things that he does or doesn't do that remind me this is not the superman I know. Clark Kent would never fuck up some truckers car after he was rude in a restaurant, he would never steal clothes without profusely apologizing or asking first. That makes you feel off when you see it

    • @FilmSpeak
      @FilmSpeak  2 года назад +1

But are those things you see as problems in this depiction of Clark not incredible HUMAN things to do? He’s the epitome of goodness in a real, decent, human way, not a caricature or cartoon.
