I'm white and no. That is a generalization. Different parts of the country had different attitudes. Whites aren't even a homogenous group here. We were very divided between English and Afrikaans speakers and there are splits of opinions along generational lines. Every story has 4 different sides here and the truth is somewhere in between.

We actually mention apartheid all the time. We are progressing so rapidly because we acknowledge our history, no matter how uncomfortable. We had the truth and reconciliation commission in which we laid bare the atrocities of apartheid. Victims and families of victims got to face their oppressors and the oppressors got to ask for forgiveness, which they didn't always get. Lots of tears. Lots of healing. We try not to be in denial. Burning books is retarded

South Africa’s nuclear weapons doctrine was designed for political leverage rather than actual battlefield use, specifically to induce the United States of America to intervene in any regional conflicts between South Africa and the Soviet Union or its proxies. To achieve a minimum credible deterrence, a total of six nuclear weapons were covertly assembled by the late 1980s.
The nuclear weapons were disarmed in 1989 during the South African Republic years and not the current day Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

We have plenty of American tourists so you may not stand out as much as you think. Especially in the larger cities, especially Cape Town. Uber is plentiful and relatively cheap in the larger cities. You can pay for almost anything, anywhere with a credit card (VISA or Mastercard, American Express is not as widely accepted). It is easy to rent a car and to rent a cellphone or just get a local prepaid SIM card (I think there are even things called eSIMs which mean you don't even need a SIM card but I don't know the details). Internet access is plentiful with most coffee shops, restaurants and accommodation offering good WiFi. There are many restaurants in South Africa ranging from fast food to world class cuisine and eating out is relatively cheap. I think like anywhere else if you treat people with kindness and respect you won't go far wrong. I think you will find almost all South Africans open and friendly towards Americans. It is worth noting that a lot of establishments now have backup power so many don't experience any times without electricity so the loadshedding is not bad if you're a tourist and can afford to stay in places that have backup power (which you can on USD). In short South Africa is very tourist friendly and I think an easy place to visit for 'first worlders'. And you can really just be who you are. We have so many different people of different backgrounds and cultures and origins so we all just kind of get along.

    • @GrahamMayer
      @GrahamMayer 4 месяца назад +2

It is customary to tip waiters at restaurants 10% and waiters are very reliant on tips just like the US. You only wouldn't tip if the waiter was really bad. And tipping more than 10% is always welcomed of course.

The word soccer comes from a slang abbreviation of the word association, which British players of the day adapted as “assoc,” “assoccer” and eventually soccer or soccer football. (The habit of adding -er to nicknames in British vernacular is frequently attributed to Oxford students of that period, and can be found in other sporting slang such as “rugger” for rugby.

In fact, not long ago, the US persuaded Botswana, our neighbour to the north, to build a US air force base in their south, where there is nothing but the South African border and the nearest capital is Pretoria, where the president and cabinet are. South Africa successfully pressured Botswana not to go ahead with it because it was clearly meant to threaten or intimidate the country. But even if it were built and attacked, and somehow got passed the defences to get to Pretoria, there is still a succession plan and the third in line to the presidency is way down in Cape Town, the 4th in line is in Bloemfontein, 5th in Cape Town, 6th usually resides in Port Elizabeth. Good luck trying to invade or stage a coup. It's possible but it is hard.

Before the Union of South Africa happened in 1910, there were four colonies, namely the former British Colonies of Cape Colony (now Northern Cape, Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces) and Natal (now Kwazulu Natal province), and then the former Boer colonies of Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (between 1902 and 1994 known as the Transvaal province, now Gauteng, NorthWest, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces) as well as the Orange Free State (now the Freestate province). The Capitals were divided so that the union could be more fair. So Cape Town represented the two british colonies, Bloemfontein the Freesate, and Pretoria the Transvaal.

I realise i get one sided views, so i try to get info besides the family and friends that live there, but it worries me. For example the Penuel show podcast on Konvo channel is where i get alternate views as an outsider. It remains hard to judge what is going on on the ground when you're not living there ofcourse. Always greet people first, even ask how they are, before asking your questions. And say thank you.
All the languages of SA are not spoken everywhere, so you will not e.g. use a Sotho language in Cape Town, you will use Xhosa (Molo/Molweni, Kunjani?, Enkosi, etc). In the north people won't speak Xhosa, but mostly Zulu (Sawubona, Hamba kahle, etc) and Sepedi (Dumela/Dumelang, Ke a leboga, etc). English is spoken everywhere, and Afrikaans in most places. Try to learn a few local words in all our languages, we don't necessarily use American words or pronunciation to refer to things, for example clothing items, food, etc. We also call traffic lights 'robots', haha!
Remember that SA, like many other countries, use the metric system. We refer to metres, kilometres, kilograms, degrees Celsius, etc. We use a 24-hour time system, for example, you will see that trading hours are 8:00-18:00, or an event starts at 20:00.
Yes, we drive on the left, and 'keep left, pass right', even as pedestrians, lol! Most cars are manual, and of course right-hand drive.
Also remember that our seasons are the opposite of the northern hemisphere (December is hot, we don't have a white Christmas!), and that we have different climates here, e.g. it rains in winter (June to August) in the Western Cape, but in summer (October to February) in the rest of the country.

The coloures are basically 5 generations of mixed people, mixing among themselves. Therefore some look closer to white, whilst others look closer to black. Also, there are still "light skinned" black people that are not classified as coloured. It's a complex issue, you won't fully grasp it as an outsider.

The Union of South Africa was divided between the Cape, OVS (Free State), Transvaal and Natal. They agreed that they should split the capitals between the British (Cape) and Boers (Ovs & Trvl), more of splitting of power. Natal missed out.

So why are there shacks in our cities... People gravitate to cities for jobs... A study found most black people have 2 dwellings one in city and one in rural area.... The city dwelling could just be a shack because, urbanization has occurred at increased rate over years.

This is so flawed. "Khoisan" is a 20th century ahistoric term by Schulze.
San and khoi were an AFRICAN 'ways of life' reference: hunter & pastoralist respectively.
During the advent of the colonial era, all the then minor ascendant houses which became polities (Xhosa, Sotho, Zulu, etc) , are the descent by the tens of millions of the ancient pygmies and proto-agrarians.
"Khoisan" was an ahistoric 20th century fiction created by Schulze.
*For millennia the South African native, of whichever way of life, was a blend of African pygmy and proto-agrarian, long before Europeans or Asians ever made it to the Cape.*
Tuu (khoekhoegowab) and Ba'Ntu was just a matter of dialect.
Today people online disingenuously like focusing pictures on MIXED-race VOC droster descendants as being an ahistoric singular group called "khoisan".
Euro descendant settler colonists and Asian VOC colonists engage in this "khoisan" propaganda online incessantly because they have a lot of property interests to lose.

Of course split capitals would hamper meetings and stuff, you don't want the executive branche and the judicial branche meeting up regularly, especially not privately.
Afrikaans is a seperate language from Dutch and it is mutually intelligable for a large part but not that easily. Actually the first scritpt Afrikaans was written is Arabic, because of the Cape Malayans more or less. The Dutch spoke Dutch and wrote in Dutch, Afrikaans was the language of the working class, the farmers (Boer is Dutch for farmer), the sailors (including Asians), the servants, so with lots of non Dutch influences from the beginning. It's stripped of many complexities and even more direct, fit to tell it like it is, than Dutch.
Apartheid is one of the words that is not mutually intelligable. It did not exist in Dutch but could be construed, and then it would mean peculiarness. We know what it is of course, the Dutch protested apartheid in SA more than any Western nation, but as a foreign word.
