Thank you Eric. Sincerely! I almost cried when you gave your speech. Im so sorry your brother had to go through that but happy to know he could spend time in a magical place before he passed. I’m giving you a hug through the screen. I know speeches aren’t your usual thing but yours was flawless and very earnest you have no idea how much it means to me and other disabled folk. I’ve had to deal with a lot of people arguing about this and I’m sure you’ve seen it. I’ll never go to Disney again as long as this change remains in effect, but even so I’ll still happily watch wdw knowing you guys still care about disabled people like myself. Sincerely, thank you Eric.

Personal story regarding DAS: I am not disabled, but when I visited Disneyland in early December of last year we were waiting for the fireworks on main street And it was very crowded. Behind me there was a woman in a wheelchair who couldn't see above the standing crowd, So I laid my jacket on the floor in front of her so there would be a gap so she could see some of the projections and fireworks. The situation angered me because she had to rely on the kindness Of a complete stranger to give her an experience that everyone else gets for free without problem Just because she couldn't walk. What angers me more is that right In front of the castle there is a whole premium reserved viewing area that only the extremely wealthy can afford when there are countless people on Main Street in wheelchairs who are missing out.

Eric, totally agree with your rant! We have a son with autism and have been using DAS for more than 10 years. We have also been using Universal's service, which has always been more accommodating, and their new system is even better. The best way to keep people from abusing the system, while making sure that those who need it can still access it, is to have them provide documentation of a disability. We haven't use Disney's DAS since earlier this year, but I am concerned that the new policies may preclude us, like others who really need the service, from using it.

I was at Disneyland over the holiday weekend. They have begun enforcing the new rules for DAS (unofficially) and a lot of people were upset. Several cast members were telling many elder/older folk that they had to either do the standby line or do the handicap line (somewhat different from DAS) and appeared to be disregarding a lot of their health concerns, but many workers told us that they were not well informed due to the third party now in charge of DAS not having communicated with Disneyland staff yet according to several cast members we spoke with about it for my relative who qualifies for DAS. There were cast members who handled the stress well, but you could see how stressed they all were from the changes and lack of information or guidance. That was simply my experience though, so I hope they can iron out the kinks in this change. Thank you for the amazing video as always and I hope you all have a Disney Day!

I have mentioned this before but I can't stand in line. I didn't know about the finding a cast member and get a return time thing... and I think they might actually give me return times if I asked because of one of my many disabilities is audible (my arthritis in my knee is very crunchy) but I still think they need to fix the system. It's clearly broken and seems like they just want to make money.
I don't have any plans to go to any Disney Parks anytime soon (money is tight for me and I don't live near either resort) but I am planning a Universal Hollywood visit later this year (some friends treating me) and I already have a doctor's visit lined up before the trip. They should do something like that if need be. That would be the best... So yeah... do something like that.

It seems like everyone else is too afraid to lose their press access or perks to even suggest Disney revisits the topic. I have never been to Universal or used their system of approval but it does seem more complete then the randomness of what I am hearing is approved or denied. I hope Disney is listening it is sad to suggest splitting up families that go on vacation once a year to be together. To me it seems more like a money grab to push people into Genie + than anything else. A wonderful CM suggested DAS for my daughter back in 2022 after they observed what she was going through and I have to tell you it changed our trip which was very stressful to an enjoyable vacation.

Just an FYI about the "obese people on scooters" - wheelchairs and scooters (ambulatory issues) never qualified for DAS; most newer rides have accessible queues, and those that don't have always just given "come back" times equal to the waiting time, or have alternative wait areas (EX: Spaceship Earth - you wait inside until the wait time has passed.)I speak as both the mother of a child who does and has qualified for DAS, and a woman about to get a new hip this summer. My thyroid issues have resulted in me gaining weight, but it's the lack of cartilage in my hip that makes it necessary for me to use a scooter. I dearly hope that after having my hips replaced I can leave the scooter behind! I do buy Genie + in addition to DAS.

The easiest way to fix DAS is to add 15 minutes (walking time) to each reservation instead of removing 10 minutes as that slightly reduced time and being able to reserve your next ride while on your current ride makes it so people want to abuse it. If they make it slightly slower then standby then it wouldn't be abused near as much as it wouldn't allow more rides. Also preventing anyone in DAS from using a standby line while they have a reservation is another way to reduce abuse.

@@mattyg4186 I fully understand what DAS is as my son is autistic and we've used it. At the same time we've also NOT used it and I can confirm you CAN do twice as much with DAS versus normal stand-by. If they make DAS slower so it doesn't act like a Fast Pass then it won't be abused and people that actually need it would be able to use it while making abusers not want to even try as it would be "slower" then normal standby.

    • @Ratchetfan321
      @Ratchetfan321 Месяц назад +3

@supremefan I've seen people even suggest that das should go to the old system where you have your return time and all but prevents people from riding rides during that time or at least ones that can have genie + used on them (so prince carasel and other non genie rides are fine)
The argument being that if das is for people who can't stand in the line and need to go sit relax or take care of other needs why are they then getting in lines for a handful of other rides while having their Das rides queue. It would make it strictly worse than the Genie+ system but also would give little reason for people who don't need that time not in line to try and take slots
Like make it to where the tap in only works after you have a das slot open again or maybe it only works on 1 ride inbetween or a 30 min cooldown before you can tap. I get the idea is to make Das less efficient than Genie to make people less likely to abuse and I'm sure there is a way to do it if disney just refused to have a better system of getting DAS in the first place like Univerals

I booked the trip back in January. Now I don’t know if I will be able to do the parks, and I’m locked into a resort. I usually go solo so I’m not sure how waiting alone would work. But i do agree this solution was not correct either. I 100% belive universal has the easiest and quickest solution to follow with their check system and accomidations. If Disney just switch to a process like Universal then people would have shouted that "it is unfair and invading their privacy". Now that the people who really need it can be more willing to provide documentation without any pushdown to Disney. I think this was and is a strategy.

This is the stock market, someone selling their shares per not always mean they gave up. If Disney stays strong he likely won't return, but they don't have a very strong future slate at this moment so it's 50/50 at this moment imo

I am disabled. I've visited Disney without DAS and I've visited with it. DAS accommodations made a meaningful difference in how my family and I could enjoy the parks.
Many folks fail to understand that you wait for the length of the standby queue and then wait for the length of the Genie+ queue upon return.
And many of us fail to meet our DAS return time because we're too slow, too tired, or dealing with our disability elsewhere in the park.
It took me 2 hours to board the Magic Carpets - disability is not a great "cut the line" strategy, folks. We're not looking to run ahead of you- most of us can't even run haha.
I'm begging some of you to reconsider your positions on providing disabled people accommodations. Just because I can't stand next to you doesn’t mean I'm not waiting with you.
Disabled people are historically absent from policy changes that directly affect us. I implore you to help us advocate for a more sustainable solution.

As this saying goes "this is why we can't have nice things", and yeah it applies to a wide range of situation, this included. Now, don't get me wrong, only allowing those who are "developmentally disabled" to use the system isn't the right way to go about it, and as someone with no disabilities or family who have them, I don't know what the right solution is, personally I say make everyone have some level of doctor's note as I don't believe DAS is directly related to ADA so this isn't 'forbidden' to do. But again, I don't know what a good solution is.

The problem isn’t people abusing it the problem is the cash grab lightning lane. Go back to a free Fastpass system like it originally was or limit to 1 or 3 day how it was as well or allow a few fast passes and include it in your ticket price as an add on the lightning lane is a cash grab and is disguising

Thank you for speaking up about the DAS changes. I mirror your sentiments. Part of the magic of the parks for me was seeing how Disney was so accommodating for those who needed it - and obviously many more folks with invisible needs too. These changes are a sour turn, and I hope this will not continue for long.

Eric, well said! My daughter has qualified for DAS for many years. She is legally blind and now won’t qualify. We sure don’t understand this as she cannot see and the regular line is treacherous for her. She informed me last night that she, her husband and two children will not be renewing their annual passes and they will be getting passes to Universal. 😢😢😢

Excellent rant by Eric. Unpopular opinion as an out of towner who comes to the parks 1-2 times a year, but Genie plus is a huge improvement over Fastpass plus (though not an improvement over paper Fastpass). However, Universal’s system is far superior. Very expensive skip the line service that doesn’t affect the standby queue nearly as much, and a better DAS system.

Eric, first, allow me to offer my condolences to you and your family on the death of your brother. Secondly, thank you for shedding light on an issue that very often is either overlooked or ignored-accommodations made for guests with disabilities. As a person with a disability, I appreciate it when people care enough to bring awareness to the need to accommodate the wide spectrum of disabilities that are seen on a day-to-day basis. I knew the second Disney rolled out Genie Plus and said that they were going to "revise" the DAS system, it was going to create more problems than it would solve. I sincerely hope the Disney executives meet with the DAS accommodation group and come up with a solution that will allow the company to accommodate a wider spectrum of disabilities and create a more inclusive environment for all guests. Thanks again for caring and I look forward to hearing more about this story as more information becomes available.

Thank you Eric for sharing your personal story. My mother loves Disney, but has 6 chronic conditions that make it very difficult for her to wait in lines and gets around with the use of a rolling walker. Because of the new DAS system she will most likely not get to go on the rides she has loved for decades when we visit in July.

Eric so sorry for the loss of your brother, my husband has colon/rectal cancer too, so we know what he went through. DAS has now disallowed my husband who has a heart condition from 2 heart attacks, neuropathy in his feet from his chemotherapy (cancer) which makes standing and balance very difficult for him, ( so we rent scooters for all you anti scooter people, you should not judge) and bowel issues because of his cancer, which is sad. We found it helpful in the past. DAS doesn’t mean you just walk on every ride, it just gives you a return time equal to what the wait time is so you do not have to stand in line. That was a lifesaver for us and made it possible for us to enjoy Disney, what Disney is doing now is a form of discrimination against people who have medical issues beyond their control, sure hope they fix it back for those that need it. Limiting the party size e to 4 or less would sure stop some of the abuse. P.S. For the complainers, maybe they should get rid of the stroller abuse too.

Watch the official trailer and see why Tianna adventure is "Pathetic" at best. Played 3 seperate videos I made of Splash Mountain over the years, there is no comparison. Projections? Really? I could buy two 86 inch TV's at Sams Club, set them side by side and do better, there is no drama, no excitement no life!!! Obviouly this attraction is on the fast track to join the defunct Star Wars Hotel. I would rather spend the same money to water the grass, at least then I would have the satisfaction that my money had been well spent.Wa

I feel like it still looks too much like splash mountain and the beautiful color palette of the movie is missing. They should’ve waited another year and did more imo if they really wanted to convince people this worth tearing down splash mountain

We went to Disney with my husband one last time (before he passed a few month later )with our 3 adult children. We Went every year since Disney opened in Florida from New England and stayed in the Polynesian most times. Spending thousands of dollars over the years there. You’re definitely right about the sun and bathroom issues and not being able to stand in lines for long periods of time. But he wanted one last memory. Unfortunately Disney was not able to accommodate us in any way and had conflicting or no information. So we spent most of the time back and forth to the hotel and sitting and wait on a bench if we could find one. I know he had a wonderful time sharing so many memories. I feel Disney really has dropped the ball in this ares and could do much better. Yes we did have to up grade and still didn’t address many issues that could have been handled far more efficiently and kindly. Just saying. So sorry for your loss Eric and Thank you for addressing this issue!

As for DAS… I do think that if you have a doctors note, then you should be allowed to use the service but only then… i’m sorry, but it is overused by people who just don’t want to pay for genie plus…. My husband has cerebral palsy and I have severe anxiety and a couple of other issues that I don’t want to discuss and my son has sensory issues and we buy genie plus I refuse to even deal with DAS i’d rather just pay so yes, my advice to these people would be to just pay if you want to still go to the theme parks. Also always make dining reservations, order food online 1 hour ahead at least, and go to and from parks at off times and you will never wait in lines! We waited in literally no lines and if it was a line it was less than 5 mins and we went for 9 days. If you research and know how to work the system you can do everything with no wait

I too am a Colon Cancer Survivor. Stage 4 mestastasized to my left lung. My spouse asked me what I wanted if I beat this thing. I said a trip to Disney. I have been going every year since my diagnosis to celebrate. That was 2020. This year I am taking my kids and grandkids. (16 total) I am afraid that I have waisted my money. We go in August and I just can't take the heat because of the exhaustion and not to mention that the food AT Disney tends to make me horribly sick. Adults think they can see disability. They can't. I can afford genie plus but my son that has 4 kids and a wife can not. This means I can't be with my grandkids during the day and rider switch means that every ride will take longer to do. Remember I mentioned exhaustion. I usually don't make it past 2pm if we rope drop even with a scooter. This will be my last celebration at Disney. I will still celebrate but never ever there again.
