Picked this game up and had a really great time with it. While I agree that things like mood and other players not taking it seriously could hurt it, I agree with sam we played with bright lights and normal background music and it was just as fun.
I'm with Sam here. Played it several times at dice tower con. It was great fun in that chaotic setting. Everyone I played with wanted to play it one more time. No AP problem with the many different strangers I played with and no problem with the convention atomsphere. For me, I think this is on par with Spyfall, for example, and is one of the best games I've played. I think this may have suffered from being so hyped before the Dice Tower played it. I'm really sort of shocked it wasn't automatic top 100 for all of them.
It's pretty good, but it's not super amazing. It has some minor issues, like alpha, and can particularly suck with a ghost that communicates too much or players who discuss too early (because then the ghost can reply in turn by say, not handing out cards if we already said we liked a choice). I think it can fall flat or be great depending on who you play it with.
I own the Polish version of Tajemincze Domostwo and I think the rule changes with that voting system and the end game shown here in this English version are not very good compared to the rules I've been playing with. I will say that this is the first game I've owned in which everyone I've played this with, gamers and non-gamers alike, has enjoyed playing it. From what I've always gone by, the ghost is showing different events in its lifetime to each person in the game and the players got to figure out which event is the murder of the ghost.
I too own the polish version. Although the shield looks useful, it's waaaaaay too big... And I wouldn't say components are exactly right in the english version, they may add to the theme, but they're way unnecessary. I like how the polish version makes it simple and fun. Also I hate (not underestimating) just hate the rules changes they did to it. I understand they can be considered more gamey, but it makes the game kinda stupid in my eyes. I'm glad I got my hands on the polish version.
Thanks for another review. I really enjoy Miami Dice episodes. I will say that I think your rating system could probably be improved. I am sure you want it simple, but it is so simple you can't often express how you like it very well. Either way keep up the good work.
I've tried to play this at a game night with purely candle light, and it's pretty challenging to see the cards. Whether this is a plus or a minus is up for debate, since I feel like the obscured lighting kinda helps, as long as everyone is on board with, "ok you gotta look deeper into these visions than you usually have to." That being said, what is ALWAYS a plus is having on some continuous spooky music. The "spooky writing music" playlist on Spotify fits really well.
I'm with Sam on the mood thing. Getting into theme is ok, but this just a deduction game. You can play it as it is without any special settings. And i'm with Tom on the hype thing. I haven't played it, granted. But based on the overview (even when the first version came out and people were raving about it) i don't see enough to get excited so much. It's unique and interesting, but that's it. Though i feel the same about the Blood rage, haha :)
Thanks for this review! I've been excited to see the new art up close and all the components. I like the new art style and all the changes from the tajemnicze domostwo version!
I'm with Sam on this one! Played it with my gaming group and tried to set a specific mood and they loved the game but asked to let go of the mood and just play it with our usual setting (background rock music and bright lights). It's become one of our favorites and while it's true that a ghost can mess up the game by having brainfarts or focusing on mini details (and believe me, one of my friends does that even when he's not tired!) We usually laugh a lot when we hear his reasoning. It's just a game, relax and have fun! It's great! And it's one of the few games I own where all my friends want to be the Gamemaster or Overlord (Ghost in this one), as in Letters From Whitechapel or Descent, usually I have to do it (which I love) because no-one wants to do it, but with this one, they all think it's fun to be the ghost and I enjoy not being the ghost too.
I really want this game now. I've heard great things but never understood why. I knew the part about how the cards artwork is on par with Dixit, which I do have already. And that you could use the Dream Cards as Dixit cards too (which would be awesome). I can't wait to get this and play it with my family.
I wonder if the voting aspect works well when a player, or multiple players, have guessed their three cards before the 7th round as something to do/contribute to the game, especially as you become proficient at the game. If you have an alpha gamer in the group, have them be the ghost. I am looking forward to trying this game out, thanks for the review guys.
Evening Gents, I agree it isn’t a party game but I am taking it around a friends house tomorrow evening and will play after dinner. So I think if there is a category Dinner-Party games then it’s a THUMBS UP!!
I think you guys really missed the mark with this review. This game is so good, way better than you're giving it credit for. Don't like the clairvoyance aspect? Then don't play with it. We play this all the time in many different settings and it's always a hit.
Enjoyed this review. Thanks! I'm assuming you might be able to play the original rule set, taking out all the additions (in the same manner that you mention chunking the voting). Is that possible? Are the basic cards the same? If that's the case, then this would be a great version to have.
I have only played the Polish Edition and my buddy who owns it happened to leave his cards at home so we used Dixit cards instead - the game worked just as well!
I love DIxit and I also love Mysterium. I haven't played this version yet (pre-ordered it), but I did play the Polish version and absolutely loved it. (I also really like playing with the Ukranian rules.) I will have to see how the voting thing works, since I didn't play with that rule. Really looking forward to getting the new version... the shield is an excellent addition to the game. As for the game being a problem if the ghost is poor, that is common with other games, as well. Spyfall is lame when played with certain players... Descent is lame if the monster player isn't taking it seriously... lots of games break if you have crappy players involved, so why hold it against this game above others? The few games I played were fantastic and everyone had a great time... I'm looking forward to playing plenty more. :-)
I agree with Tom that the voting mechanism is fiddly. I always have a hard time teaching this particular mechanism to new players. I always get a lot of "why are we voting against each other" and people are far more interested in just analyzing the art anyway. Plus getting to see all three cards in the epilogue isn't always better than just getting one really good vision card. Having more vision cards can just convolute things. It seemed to be a lot of fiddly-ness over a mechanic that does have a huge payoff in the end.
So does the ghost only decide who is the real killer when going into the last phase, or does he place a number of his choosing on the "?" area from from the beginning of the game?
The ghost chooses who the real murder situations based on the cards that are in their hand. In that final round for the 3 cards; one has to be geared toward the murderer, one has to be for the place, and one has to be for the weapon. The ghost can't just go heavy towards one aspect of the murder with the vision cards.
I was fairly uncertain of this game before, but now that I've watched your reviews I feel I'm even more on the fence than ever before. Mainly I feel I would be the only one to take the game seriously enough to get full enjoyment.
New Troll This review is exactly why I find Dice Tower reviews so helpful. I was probably going to buy both this and "Rattle, Battle, Grab the Loot" based on industry buzz on cool components...sometimes that's enough to make me want to pull the trigger on the "new, shiny". However, Zee's caveats in particular made me realize that this would be a bad purchase for my family and my gaming group. I can see where it would be a fantastic game in the right setting...but a flop for my gaming circles. Thanks to Tom, Sam and Zee for a thorough and fair review.
William Smith I think Zee's point makes sense, but in my experience the game has been far from fragile - it's been a hit with everyone I've played it with, and never fell flat. I actually think the "work it out" stuff is enough even without the "ghostly" experience. Even tom's point about one player/bad ghost making it a weird experience, while true, can also lead to a lot of hilarity.
+William Smith, yeah. I think Zees off the mark here. played it maybe a dozen times in a convention setting with all complete strangers. it wasn't remotely fragile to the environment. I could see how really playing up thr atmosphere would make it even more fun, but it wasn't necessary. From just that experience, I ordered it from Poland so that I could play it with my family, some of whom aren't remotely gamers. I don't think it needs the atomsphere anymore than any other game.
John Byrne I've played maybe 20 times with 50+ different people, ages 12-60, gamers and family, and not once has somebody disliked the game or has the experience fell flat. I wouldn't even begin to think this game was frail compared to other games in my collection. So yeah Zee's points seems really, really off base to me. He also felt like you have to play with the lights down, which is also way off base. They are way too into theme on this show. It's one thing to appreciate it, it's another to say the game is only good if you roleplay a freaking seance. This game does great at conventions. I'm definitely siding with Sam on this one; I felt like Zee was wrong on every single point he made. Tom was right about the ghost, but the easy solution is to have the experienced board gamer be the ghost. At my game group anyone can ghost, and at home I just play the ghost. It has always worked.
Tom, if you're not hanging on to your copy, can I have it? :P This is the game I've been waiting for, and the Black Friday madness of Gen Con was well-deserved, though I think people may eventually be disappointed with this one, buying it based on hotness.
I'm still buying this just because I loved all that hype. Haha.. just kidding. Dixit with a purpose. I'm putting it on my list, at least for a halloween game right? Not at a party :P I agree with Sam on this one.
I don't really understand why this was the chase game at GenCon. Maybe it was the low supply. It still doesn't appeal to me. I think, much like Dixit, the game would wear thin quick. Especially if you play with the same group. Looks nice, but when one is trying to keep to a reasonable sized collection, this one doesn't make the cut for me. I think it will fade in popularity pretty quick. Same for Codenames as well, the other chase game from this year's convention.
I've played Dixit, and while I liked the card designs, I thought it was pretty darn weak-- we played with a full complement of 6, and in that case you don't get to be the storyteller very much-- and the non-storyteller roles were pretty limited and boring. It seemed like a good idea that wasn't developed enough. Mysterium looks good though, less of a party game as I would prefer, so I may have to pick up a copy.
I agree with Sam, I dislike dixit and this is better. Although I have found the game gets a bit old quickly. I am glad I didn't get caught up in the hype and ran out to buy it. Glad someone else bought it and I can play it when I feel the need for something different.
I played this game last night with my friends, and quite frankly it fell flat for us. I was curious what you all thought about it and I agree with a lot of your points. Different gamers look for different things in a game; for me, the most important mark of a game is my experience while playing it and how the game made me “feel”. I’ve played this game with a few different play groups, almost every time with me as the ghost, and for me the “feeling” I felt most prominently in this game was frustration. So many times I will have a hand of dream cards where every card is terrible and misleading for the psychics, yet I have to give them something! The psychics then analyze the terrible card I gave them thinking I wanted them to have that card, but really I just had to dish something to them! Yes there is forgiveness with the seven rounds to make three guesses, but each time someone guesses wrong it feels like you did a lousy job and it almost makes the game unplayable (for me, anyway). The second major thing I dislike in this game is the downtime. While the ghost is trying to find dream cards to send to the psychics, the psychics have nothing to do and can completely check out of the game. That’s not always a bad thing, however it really dampens the pace of the game to the point that it doesn’t feel fun for anyone. It also puts a ton of pressure on the ghost to hurry the game along. The theme and concept though is amazing to me. It’s a twist on both Clue and Dixit, and I wish that I liked the game more because that sounded so cool to me. At the end of the day, though, the question I ask when looking for a game to play is, “will my friends and I be entertained by the time this game is done?” This game doesn’t do that for me.
+Graham Haslett The players are mediums/psychic communicating with a spirit that was a witness/the victim. The ghost is giving them clues to help figure out who killed the victim, where they killed them, and with what weapon.
+Wuumaster so all the characters on the cards are possible suspects and possible locations and weapons. I'm not sure I get the theme. It looks fun and I love deductions, not sure why the ghost is telling the players multiple characters, weapons and locations, if there's only one? I really should stop over thinking things
Graham Haslett The ghost is trying to recreate the setting of its murder. The mediums are trying to help the ghost remember who was at what place in the mansion with access to what items. This then helps the ghost remember which of the possible suspects actually murdered them.
Clue vs Dixit. Meh! :P Beautiful, but I wouldn't pay 60$ It's beautiful, but seems boring (Maybe fun for 4-5 play). I rather play Phantom of the Opera.
I was disappointed with this game. I really wanted to like it! Most of the game is spent waiting to get your dream card. The majority of games allow you to think and strategize even if it's not your turn--in this game there isn't much of that until you get your next card. I felt like I was sitting there with nothing to do most of the time. :( Maybe they will make it better one day.
is it just me or in the intro if says porn and fart games... confusing but then i get it its board and card games but make it sound right so i can make zure whar games you are playing

I've had more success with this game with my non-gamer friends than any other game

Also the cartoonish art on those characters, weapons and scenes doesn't appeal to me.
What I like about the Dice Tower is that they'll give you an exact estimate of the time it takes you to play the game: 42 minutes... ^^ (at 1:56)
Marco Schaub that's what it says on the game box, so nothing they did themselves
Er Ich Yeah, you're right. Must be a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference.

Prettiest game of 2015.
You can use dixit cards for Mysterium it's all up to imagination and creativity
I Have got a polish version "Tajemnicze Domostwo" and english version Mysterium - Mysterium is more beautiful :- ) I like this game.

The frailty is a good point, players need to be into it to enjoy it.

Lee Nicholas Also, for what it's worth, my wife and I had a great time playing the Polish edition of this game. It was a fantastic game!
"I'll probably remember if I've given you a card..." even when playing with 7 players? It can get a little tricky after a few rounds, I think!
Z's comments are the best by far!!!! :D

No new art on the Ghost cards? that's a pitty
And for the shield, just put the box in front of you as a shield, very simple , not as atractive
