I'm sorry, but I still can't over the fact that the Powerpuff Girls all have mobile phones now. Aren't they, like, 5 or something? I know they were added to be current with today's technology, and that's all fine and good, but when your main characters aren't any older than 10, it doesn't really work

If Blossom would just get over her ridiculous pride and OCD-like mannerisms, I would like her better. But this does not stop me from shedding a single manly tear in "Mane Event", oh god poor little Blossom. Whenever her egoism gets too big for her own good, you have to admit she often does deserve what causes her to get an deflated ego.
At least with that she was likable enough that you did feel sorry for the terrible haircut. Plus, you have to admit that when she got her sisters back in the end it was funny. I don't know what the hell they were going with this version. She's more annoying than anything remotely like a leader.
I'm glad the two got their karma to bite them right in the butt. But as shown in TTG vs PPG she is a better leader than him but she was drawn with her old personality rather than her new one.
Joe Segal Yeah, Blossom is basically the TTG version of Robin in the reboot but the sad thing about it is that TTG Robin is a PARODY. This Blossom is being played straight as her personality is NOT a joke on the original but what is supposed to be CANON. That is NOT a good thing.
I know, why couldn't she have been drawn with her new self? It would have been funnier. Also the Bubbles you know is gone since her very first focus episode aired! Fo'evah.
Oh and so Blossom does have heat vision and freeze breath in the series. And yet she never uses it when it would be handy. Like Man Up 2. Sure they were tied to a statue and about to get torn to pieces by a landmower but that would require actual effort ! And why they didn't use their Lantern powers to escape ? Uhm...look a distraction !
The show has been aired out of order. I know this happens but considering that the new powers were supposed to be a massive selling point for toys it really shows the 'care' CN has taken on this.
I was honestly expecting them to get the Greek to English translation wrong because they thought no one would notice, but they actually got it right, and that really surprised me. (besides the fact that they left out one word so now it means "see ya" and not "see ya later", but I digress because this seems to be the most effort that the writers have actually put into this show..)
I saw this and was bored but in my boredom I realized why this episode felt so weak. There is no chaos to the show anymore. In the OG series, they would have expanded the trouble the spirits had caused from beyond the house and into the city or if they were keeping the whole thing inside, there would have been some sort of warp that made the entire house like some sort of fever dream. THIS is the episode that could have used that Allergo, acid-trip fantasy and in a way it kind of feels like if you combined those two you'd get some sort of story. Hear me out on this; if the two episodes were combined it would have started with Buttercup starting the whole thing by going too far with fun which would get her in trouble with Ms. Keane. Keane would tell the professor and HE would have been the one to lecture her about learning when to have fun at the right and wrong times. Buttercup gripes but is sent to help her sisters clean up where she has a little tiff with Blossom and tells her that she doesn't know how to have fun, hurting her feelings a little. Bubbles tries to play moderator since she doesn't want to take just ONE sisters' side but it doesn't help. The girls then find the box together and inside is Allegro who promises them no-stop fun. Buttercup is on board but Blossom falters because she senses that something isn't right but she remembers what Buttercup said and goes with her. In a flash, it appears that nothing has changed but the girls see that they are now in a world that is nonstop fun and they can do whatever they want. Buttercup loves this, Blossom is worried but slowly starts to enjoy but Bubbles becomes the one to investigate a little further when the cute 'animal' hits her senses and doesn't appear as cute anymore. She is also the one who notices the box with Hope's voice calling for them to release her but before she can do anything Allegro takes the box from her and tells her to have fun. Meanwhile the girls are having fun in this new rule-free world but after a while Buttercup starts to see that the world she dreamed of isn't what she wanted, especially when after a while even the Prof. stops acting like a dad when she needs it and instead winds up acting like some sort of monster. Buttercup becomes freaked out and sees that everyone under Allergro''s control it become some sort of drone and when she and Blossom try to fight he shows himself that has gotten too strong for them to fight. Buttercup finally sees how her desire for fun has been used against her but Bubbles arrives just in time to show up with the box, only for the girls to discover that Hope has been chained up inside the little pocket-verse like thing and only she has the power to contain him due to their powers sort of being linked as a sort of chaos/order deal but in their time in the box, Allergro found a way to trap Hope in order to gain the upper hand. Realizing that the girls are on to him, Allergo sends the drones after the girls and they have a battle but over time, Allegro shows that the energy he has gotten from everyone in the city along with his own chaos powers have given him the upper hand and he beats the girls but in the last second, Bubbles kicks the box from Allegro's hold into Buttercup's hands. Allergro tries to lull Buttercup into a false sense of friendship by reminding her of all the 'fun' she had with him and for a second, she fakes him out by looking to join with him but she tosses the box out of his hold and all three girls zap it in order to break the chains holding Hope. Hope is free but is joined by the girls for the final hit, striking Allergo much like in the original episode which causes his outter form to shatter to reveal the small creature inside and he and his minons are sucked into the box and Townsville is returned to normal, with Hope giving the girls a hopeful (snrk) nod before she returns to the box and sends it back to where it came from. Buttercup realizes she was pushing Blossom into having too much fun but Blossom shows she's not upset and Bubbles is just happy to see that her sisters don't hate each other like she had feared. THERE. I just combined two episodes into one and managed to fit in Pandora's Box as well as Happy-Happy-Raver Acid episode together. If they wanted chaos and action, it was right there for them to do but as I said, everything felt so RESTRICTED to one area and nothing really happened. The Halloween special with Gumball and the Ghost was much more exciting and visually pleasing than this soo.....? What more can I say? The episode was boring and it reminded me why I dislike OCD Blossom. Even TWILIGHT doesn't do this when her pickiness is played for laughs.
Hasatanel Belial Consider it showing that Buttercup and Blossom understanding the point of order and chaos with Buttercup obviously being chaos while Blossom is order, both trying to make their point but going too far either way and hurting each other when they try to correct each other over who is right.. Both having to learn the lesson when things are taken to the extreme and understanding why other people (Keane) would be annoyed in the chaotic behavior or bored with it. Both of the original episodes had problems in that there was a lesson but whatever action leads up to that has no substance. All Painbow did was try to shove in memes as a means of 'too much fun' as well as having a near empty fight between the girls and Allergo. In Puffdora's Box, the entire thing is self contained and feels smoothed with it only being contained in the house with no real chaos going. For a show that is based on SUPER HEROES, there really is no real super hero action and if they're still trying to go for the more 'character driven' aspect, they haven't done that either. Both of the original episodes rely far too much on characters being 'RANDOM' and having SOME connection to their moral than to actually build a story to connect anything that feels real. And if a good plot with the Boogieman can be put into one short, so can this. Or we can go the route similar to the episode where everyone gets switched which was a two-parter. Either way, the show isn't building stories, especially when they're saying they're being more character driven than the original. They're just ripping off things from either the original source material or from episodes from better done shows.
Hasatanel Belial If you're going to apply they're heroes and kids thing, then this show has stripped them of the hero aspect since it treats them more like children than the original show EVER has, and they were supposed to be FIVE (or close to it) in the OG show. Here, we're SUPPOSED (I guess) to assume they're older given they're always placed into school situations that make them feel like they're in at LEAST middle school (highschool IS stretching it once you think about it) All in all, the episodes are BORING and fail at delivering their message in even a short way. Call the example I gave hammered but nearly all the original episodes are hammered as well, with the obligatory 'character repeats the lesson once they see it and repeats it again at the end' stuff that you'd see in shows aimed at much younger audiences. Even the original show didn't do that when they were younger. What I'm just saying is that the new show doesn't know how to balance whatever its trying to do. Its trying to seem 'deep' and have morals but all the morals are still flat and can be seen a mile away. They tried to stress the important of the girls being heroes but they are terrible super heroes, spending more time fighting with themselves in stupid situation elements than anything that has to do with battling monsters and saving the world. At least with the idea I presented, there would be an actual THREAT in which the girls would ACTUALLY be heroes like they were meant to be. Allergo failed as a threat because he didn't do anything and once he is defeated you realize he wasn't really ANYTHING. He wasn't like HIM where he was was truely malevolent. We find out he really was a small bear inside a larger costume who wanted to party. He caused trouble but when you find out that he wasn't as big a threat it took away the fun and made the girls seem weaker since they were in turn fighting a weaker villan. The demons weren't as troublsome or fun as the Party Unicorns from Regular Show because we never get that feeling that they were 'cool' at first before shit started to hit the fan. I mean, Blossom was able to go back to the girls' room which wasn't destroyed. Everything felt so compacted in that episode and they were trying too hard to play safe for what reasons I don't know. All in all, the writers of this new team are just playing it too safe with EVERYTHING and not allowing themselves to have actual FUN with these characters. That's why the girls seems so flanderized because they're their tropes to a T instead of expanding on them. Their battles are always so lacking in action and fun and the threats they face are never really 'threats', just random obstacles that feel like they would show up in a type of show where weird things happen but the main characters DON'T have supper powers and they'd have to figure out how to fix things like a normal human being. If this were the case, there is no point to the girls having powers or being super heroes at all which again misses the points of the girls being heroes all together. It was nice to have episodes to have the girls show themselves off as kids in the old show but it was nicely balanced with the super hero elements so when those slow parts happened it sort of gave a nice human element to them to remind us that their girls. The new show is slow all out which leaves people to wait for those moments when the girls actually get a chance to be SUPER HEROES. Again, this makes no sense when we've had the message of the girls being heroes shoved into our faces so many times.
Hasatanel Belial Oh GOD, I know! You can see the SU inspiration but....it's not so much INSPIRATION is it? If it were inspiration, you could see the POSITIVE effects where else here it feels like they're just taking notes without looking at the meaning. As if they don't understand WHY a lot of storybeats from SU work and why they keep missing the mark. Again, I think it's because they're playing 'safe' and not taking risk. Granted, SU is NOT the first animated series to tackle many of the issues that it has shown but it does it in a way that for its audience works. I can't imagine how SU would work if it IMPLIED it was going to take on an issue but then COMPLETELY avoided it all before crying out that it did. That's what PPG2k16 feels like. It's one of those things that is going 'LOOK AT US! WE CAN DO IT TOO!!' but then it doesn't bring anything new to the table and what's worse is that it took a show that had it's own thing and made it boring. You mentioned the baddies from the old show; most of them were funny in their own way and I will say that not all of them were hits but most of the main ones that everyone mentions ARE what made the show. The news ones really don't have a lot of staying power to them because other than Allegro, they don't do anything and even he wasn't 'evil' per say. Just his intentions were in the wrong place. As much as people hate him, MAN BOY is the only bad guy in the new series who feels like he's doing something, As badly exaggerated as he is (and a missed opportunity but if you want me to discuss that, let me know. I don't want to add too much to this reply) he's the only one of the new crew that feels EVIL. Bianca Bikin and her sister don't really do much and their attack on the girls only came because they were too tired to fight them which was BULLSHIT. Man Boy seriously has been the only villan who has made a return who's clear goal of defeating the girls has been shown and feels like an actual threat as he WILL come back and fight until he wins. Pack-Rat only comes in as a typical distraction that served only as a device and I don't know if they're ever going to bring him back after he was blown up in his monster form. And then there is the INTERWEBZ bad guy but.....yeah. None of the baddies in the new show are a threat and in a way that takes away some of the agency the girls had. The best part about the show was seeing just how OUTLANDISH the bad guys' plans would be in order to reach THEIR goals and get rid of the girls but so far much more time has been dedicated to the girls having to deal with their own slice-of-life issues they bring on themselves. Either that or they try to push in a bad guy from the old show only to not accomplish much either. It's just that the show is so EMPTY now and even if its a toy show that doesn't excuse it for being lazy, especially when the writers of the new series were so adamant in how much better they were going to make the show when it hasn't really done anything stellar at all. In fact, the toys for the show won't be coming out for another THREE MONTHS yet the show has been out since SPRING. WOW. JUST......WOW. C'mon, Cartoon Network.
Hasatanel Belial They're trying to go for that Steven feel but imagine if the SU characters acted as the PPG reboot ones and it would be....bad. REALLY bad. This is why it's better to be inspired rather than to straight up steal. Ameythyst already annoys me but if she were like Buttercup then she would have no sympathy because all she would be is someone who has no reason to act like a brat and be a poser for how 'cool' and better they are than anyone else. Pearl's neat-freakness would be off the charts and she would be too busy with keeping clean than to be an actual warrior. Garnet would be completly STUPID because she would miss the points because haha.....older characters are stupid? And Steven would just be stupid as well, spouting out memes instead of being a curious kid thrown into the middle of a bunch of things. This is why people compare PPG2k16 to TTG because at least TTG is PARODYING the characters so the flanderization made sense when it began; it's exaggerating the characters. PPG plays it for straight and expects us to not only see the girls as heroes but see their choices as correct whenever a lesson is beaten over your head, only for it to go void with no character development, like the writers SAID they were going to do. But I will give you a nod for pointing out that Manboy does seem to be Buttecup's bad guy which in a way is pretty nice but it begs to ask if the girls will get their own adversary, aside from their RRB counterparts of course. The whole Bikini sisters thing was just asking for more chaos yet it felt like nothing happened. The girls only got taken out from their own action of playing a video game character build screen so it just feels cheap. It's like the writers are scared to have the girls and the bad guys do ANYTHING anymore and for what reasons I don't know why. The thing about sympathetic is that the best way to write them is not to force their sorrows on the viewers. A good writer would be able to show their issues without having to remind those at home we HAVE to feel sorry for them by obligation otherwise they come off as a character with nothing. This is why Packrat comes off as boring because he HAS nothing other than the pack-rat mentality and you don't feel sorry for because he still fights the girls anyway. It would have been a different story if we had seen any other part of his character (and it's a bit of a stretch to automatically label him as having a mental illness, especially when him stealing shiny things is based on RATS and other animals taking certain objects for their nest and it's played for laughs. He's basically a humanoid rat who is doing what he's supposed to be doing anyway) Again, this is why a lot of people hate the writing of the new series. The crew went out of their way to boast about how superior they were going to make this new show out to be when compared to the old version when all it does it resuse plots from the old series (though to be fair, this can get a pass because a lot of reboots often pay homage by doing this. They just do it BETTER) and try to piggy back on more popular shows on CN on a whole 'skin surface' level and not realizing WHY some of those shows are popular to begin with. It tried to emulate the 'SO RANDOM' formula from the earlier seasons of Adventure Time but missed the mark and came off as annoying. It tries to have more 'serious' moments like Steven Universe but missed the mark and came off as boring and pretentious. It tries to play off the Clarence style as the art director from that show works on this but it comes off as stiff, uninspired and just plain awful to look at. Yes, the PPG is nostalgia cash grab but you'd think that if these people wanted BIG BUCKS, they would have brought in people who knew what they were doing. Take the TMNT reboot crew; the show has been going strong since 2010 and that's because it hits EVERY note with the fandom and brings TOGETHER new and older fans rather than dividing them in terms of how much they enjoy the new series. The writing has been updated but not in a way that will badly age is, the art is new and amazing, especially for a series that made most of it's popularity flow from being animated in 2D, and the marketing knows how to target older fans and newer fans by making things available to them. We have yet to see anything like that come from the PPG. And the Unicorn episode should be made into a monument that says 'THIS IS HOW YOU DON'T DO IT' in giant gold letters. It still irks me how they did that to the original writer; stealing their work and taking the credit for making a 'trans focused' episode when they never intended it to be that way at all. I can only give them props for not doubling back and then blaming the writer for it for as far as I have seen, they took full responsibility and apologized.
Hasatanel Belial But there is a limit to Amethyst and the writers know better than to try to force the viewers to like her even with her backstory. Buttercup is just pushed to the forefront and we're expected to sympathize with her but in the simplicity of it, there is nothing to feel sorry about her. She's just a jerk and she keeps being a jerk for no reason other than 'I'M NOT LIKE OTHER X-!' At least they built up a reason WHY Amy (shorthand spelling =P ) is the way she is and while she is not my fave character in the series, I GET it. Buttercup is just....well, she's just a jerk who doesn't seem to learn yet is getting the most attention thus far. There just doesn't seem to be a solid story in this series when compared to SU which makes it very clear that this is a story you have to follow in order. PPG can't even AIR in the correct order so it seems like evry episode they pull something out from under us that shows they don't care about the show but the POPULARITY it can gather for just existing. This show is basically a media version of getting a gold star for just being there while everything else EARNED the rewards and people are seeing just how messed up that is. Bubs with her 'coding skills' would have worked had they not just.....plopped it there along with MOAR MEMES. Like Christ, are those the only jokes the writers can think of? And Packrat is just played up for a joke but he is a joke that leads to nothing. As I said. his entire point is he is a Packrat....RAT. And he's just a creepy guy who takes things and acts weird with his dolls. No woobie backstory, just a packrat who is a packrat and was then turned into a rather boring looking monster. Imagine what they could have done had they mutated him with his dolls instead of just making him a bright lime green toxic waste monster. They keep missing chances to do something to....do something else that falls flat on it's face. It shouldn't take THIS LONG for a show to start to get things rolling and thus far nothing has happened. If a show can't get you in within at least three episodes what is the point of staying for the ride? They really haven't built any more character from the girls other than 1)Blossom is obsessed with order and spends more time complaining about getting dirty than being a leader or fighting. 2) Buttercup is obsessed with her tough girl image much like how a stereotypical cheerleader trope would be with hers and always doing stupid shit episode by episode 3) Bubbles spouts out memes and catch phrases that are not only dated but will become dated by the time a year passes from this show coming out. The 2k16 version more or less is a cheap late 90s/early 2000s girl-power type show that tries too hard to remind us about things that shouldn't be shoved into the face of the audience. If the girls were good characters on their own, they wouldn't repeat points about them over and over again as well as have them repeat the moral of the lesson. In this past decade, it has been the in thing to try to make animated series 'deep' by trying to be down or making certain characters seem more than they are but I have only seen a few shows do this well while everything else goes back to the same tropes at the end of the day. All you have to do is imply some sort of 'issue' onto a character and people think they have something deep when it's more than that. All they've done is created a LABEL, not a character and PPG 2k16 is a show full of LABELS and just isn't fun. The older show parody a lot of things but it was at least enjoyable in what it was making fun of because it knew there was no point to being stiff or trying to pretend to be something that it's not. We have seen with the reboot that the show is riding so hard on other shows that other than carrying the PGG name and brand, it has nothing to stand on its own. It's just there in the line-up surrounded by shows that can tell stories better, that can develop characters better and can all out handle humor and action better.

But still they can't compare to how much I hate Buttercup's asshole selfish behavior. But this are my complains... How in the Freaking Hell did the Professor acquired Pandora's Box (which in the original myth it was no box but more of an Urn) and how the hell does the Spirits of Chaos are familiar with so advance and horrible culture, cause I am pretty sure Greeks didn't had cellphones (also this shows more when the dumb ghost punches the TV thinking its a mirror) and how the hell are they familiar with Rap Music!? This Spirits of chaos are basically your stereotypical College Stupids. And how the hell is hope such a Selfish little clone of Bubbles! But man you miss the opportunity to make an awesome joke! When Hope gets the bike and goes away you could have said "I Think this describes the entire Reboot"
Ah thank you! And even though I wasn't a huge fan of it compared to the original: Monsters University did this sort of thing better. I was actually going to use that ending line where Buttercup says "What is even going on right now?" to make a similar joke, but then I came up with that keyboard cat thing because it was 2am and I get my best (or stupidest depending on how you view it) ideas when I'm really tired.

And if that is what you meant, don't forget that the ghost's phone was also glowing just like the spirits were, and she had it when she came out of the box. If it's an ancient spirit, how would she have a smartphone when they were only invented a little over a decade ago? Who learned what from the girls? Please clarify. What do you mean "how ghosts work?" They can hold objects but only some of the time, otherwise they just pass right through them? It doesn't make sense.
Hasatanel Belial But the difference between the professor and Mojo & Sedusa is that we see those two actually obtain those items, whereas there is no explanation as to why the Professor has a box. He's an inventor, not an archaeologist; yeah he can have hobbies but they've barely touched on this before. Alright, thanks for clearing that up. Yeah I understand that, but I would've at least liked to see someone question it, maybe a snide remark about how they're able to play guitar or something. It was just a minor point, don't take it as a big criticism. And yeah, I think Jemmica has done her job.

I liked bubbles with the hairstayle and the T-shirt kinda cute I didn't like the spirits... like wth? wouldn't it be better( considering that a scientist is the owner of the box ) to use mutants or radioactive criatures? why spirits, or at least show some flashback of him giving the box to the prof. like in tiara trouble
They won't even start selling the toys until FALL. I know we're getting close but other shows have had their toys on shelves when the show was AIRING. No wonder CN can't sel shit. They don't know how to market.
Lisa Barnes I feel the same way but this has been a pattern with CN that everyone knows and jokes about. They always go on so deep about how they only want shows that sell toys and only keep shows that make bank with toys but they NEVER PRODUCE TOYS for the shows they cancel....because of toys! The only other series I can think of that they did do well with toys was Ben 10 but other than that, nearly all the other modern CN shows rely on the teen and adult fanbase to sell them shit, not the kids CN keeps insisting they are aiming for.

Not gonna lie, I got pretty scared when they started rapping. So far this show is really strange for me. It's not as TERRIBLE as ppl say it is (all the time) and has some pretty intense laughing session like the hangover episode, but at the same time it makes me cringe. lol. Still worth watching tho imo.
Yeah I mean there are some instances that manage to hold my attention but soon after it gets ruined by a poorly written joke or awkward reference to something that doesn't really seem to fit.

Seriously so many nitpicks with this one for me but then again they are just nitpicks so I can't complain. However I agree that the moral seemed rushed and that many things needed to be explained. I mean how would the professor have Pandora's Box? I can understand if Him had it and gave it to the professor. They seemed to be on good terms since the Professor ate at his diner one time. Also sadly Blossom is becoming my least favorite character which I really don't like saying. She wasn't my favorite in the previous show either BUT that's because she reminded me of myself save the leadership part. I always feel awkward when a show can make me face myself or have a character that is WAY too on the nose like myself (watamote). Anyway you explained your points well and I look forward to your next review.
I love how you're getting so worked up over that one little clip, it's not that big of a deal man. I'd also appreciate it if you'd respect the fact that not everyone agrees with your opinion, and calling others out for having one that disagrees with you doesn't exactly make you look good. I'm not entirely sure why an inventor would study ancient magic when that's clearly not in his job description, but if he does it as a side hobby then it's not a big deal. Problem is, Frenemy came out after this episode, and I'm reviewing it as if this were the first time it aired. Therefore, his studies of witchcraft haven't been established yet. Again, this 2 second clip seems to be the only thing you're complaining about when it wasn't even a part of my larger argument. My need to be spoon fed info? What does that even mean? And that last point about Blossom I'm not ever sure where you're getting from? I never said that didn't make sense, I complained that it was practically spelled out for us in that typical preschooler style of writing. When did I complain about cell phones? I complained about the selfie line, but never the fact that Blossom or Buttercup had their phones out. I think you're making up things I never said at this point. Typical ghost rules? It's not really typical if they're selective of what they can and cannot physically touch.
Ah, it was alright. I wasn't too into it myself, but it was harmless to say the least. I don't have much more to say about it besides that since I never watched much of it.

I'm sorry, but I still can't over the fact that the Powerpuff Girls all have mobile phones now. Aren't they, like, 5 or something? I know they were added to be current with today's technology, and that's all fine and good, but when your main characters aren't any older than 10, it doesn't really work

If Blossom would just get over her ridiculous pride and OCD-like mannerisms, I would like her better. But this does not stop me from shedding a single manly tear in "Mane Event", oh god poor little Blossom. Whenever her egoism gets too big for her own good, you have to admit she often does deserve what causes her to get an deflated ego.
At least with that she was likable enough that you did feel sorry for the terrible haircut. Plus, you have to admit that when she got her sisters back in the end it was funny.
I don't know what the hell they were going with this version. She's more annoying than anything remotely like a leader.
I'm glad the two got their karma to bite them right in the butt.

Yeah, Blossom is basically the TTG version of Robin in the reboot but the sad thing about it is that TTG Robin is a PARODY. This Blossom is being played straight as her personality is NOT a joke on the original but what is supposed to be CANON. That is NOT a good thing.
I know, why couldn't she have been drawn with her new self? It would have been funnier. Also the Bubbles you know is gone since her very first focus episode aired! Fo'evah.
I just watched the Powerpuff Girls Movie yesterday, it healed me from this reboot SO MUCH!
I've been watching the original series to get my mind off of this poor excuse of a reboot (although, it's way more tolerable than Teen Titans Go)
It makes the original so much more enjoyable in my opinion

Modern!Blossom feels kinda like they're trying to make her into a flanderized Twilight Sparkle then anything resembling the original Blossom.
Oh and so Blossom does have heat vision and freeze breath in the series.
And yet she never uses it when it would be handy. Like Man Up 2. Sure they were tied to a statue and about to get torn to pieces by a landmower but that would require actual effort ! And why they didn't use their Lantern powers to escape ?

The show has been aired out of order. I know this happens but considering that the new powers were supposed to be a massive selling point for toys it really shows the 'care' CN has taken on this.
I was honestly expecting them to get the Greek to English translation wrong because they thought no one would notice, but they actually got it right, and that really surprised me. (besides the fact that they left out one word so now it means "see ya" and not "see ya later", but I digress because this seems to be the most effort that the writers have actually put into this show..)
I saw this and was bored but in my boredom I realized why this episode felt so weak.
There is no chaos to the show anymore. In the OG series, they would have expanded the trouble the spirits had caused from beyond the house and into the city or if they were keeping the whole thing inside, there would have been some sort of warp that made the entire house like some sort of fever dream.
THIS is the episode that could have used that Allergo, acid-trip fantasy and in a way it kind of feels like if you combined those two you'd get some sort of story. Hear me out on this; if the two episodes were combined it would have started with Buttercup starting the whole thing by going too far with fun which would get her in trouble with Ms. Keane. Keane would tell the professor and HE would have been the one to lecture her about learning when to have fun at the right and wrong times. Buttercup gripes but is sent to help her sisters clean up where she has a little tiff with Blossom and tells her that she doesn't know how to have fun, hurting her feelings a little. Bubbles tries to play moderator since she doesn't want to take just ONE sisters' side but it doesn't help. The girls then find the box together and inside is Allegro who promises them no-stop fun. Buttercup is on board but Blossom falters because she senses that something isn't right but she remembers what Buttercup said and goes with her. In a flash, it appears that nothing has changed but the girls see that they are now in a world that is nonstop fun and they can do whatever they want. Buttercup loves this, Blossom is worried but slowly starts to enjoy but Bubbles becomes the one to investigate a little further when the cute 'animal' hits her senses and doesn't appear as cute anymore. She is also the one who notices the box with Hope's voice calling for them to release her but before she can do anything Allegro takes the box from her and tells her to have fun.
Meanwhile the girls are having fun in this new rule-free world but after a while Buttercup starts to see that the world she dreamed of isn't what she wanted, especially when after a while even the Prof. stops acting like a dad when she needs it and instead winds up acting like some sort of monster. Buttercup becomes freaked out and sees that everyone under Allergro''s control it become some sort of drone and when she and Blossom try to fight he shows himself that has gotten too strong for them to fight. Buttercup finally sees how her desire for fun has been used against her but Bubbles arrives just in time to show up with the box, only for the girls to discover that Hope has been chained up inside the little pocket-verse like thing and only she has the power to contain him due to their powers sort of being linked as a sort of chaos/order deal but in their time in the box, Allergro found a way to trap Hope in order to gain the upper hand. Realizing that the girls are on to him, Allergo sends the drones after the girls and they have a battle but over time, Allegro shows that the energy he has gotten from everyone in the city along with his own chaos powers have given him the upper hand and he beats the girls but in the last second, Bubbles kicks the box from Allegro's hold into Buttercup's hands. Allergro tries to lull Buttercup into a false sense of friendship by reminding her of all the 'fun' she had with him and for a second, she fakes him out by looking to join with him but she tosses the box out of his hold and all three girls zap it in order to break the chains holding Hope. Hope is free but is joined by the girls for the final hit, striking Allergo much like in the original episode which causes his outter form to shatter to reveal the small creature inside and he and his minons are sucked into the box and Townsville is returned to normal, with Hope giving the girls a hopeful (snrk) nod before she returns to the box and sends it back to where it came from. Buttercup realizes she was pushing Blossom into having too much fun but Blossom shows she's not upset and Bubbles is just happy to see that her sisters don't hate each other like she had feared.
THERE. I just combined two episodes into one and managed to fit in Pandora's Box as well as Happy-Happy-Raver Acid episode together. If they wanted chaos and action, it was right there for them to do but as I said, everything felt so RESTRICTED to one area and nothing really happened. The Halloween special with Gumball and the Ghost was much more exciting and visually pleasing than this soo.....?
What more can I say? The episode was boring and it reminded me why I dislike OCD Blossom. Even TWILIGHT doesn't do this when her pickiness is played for laughs.

Consider it showing that Buttercup and Blossom understanding the point of order and chaos with Buttercup obviously being chaos while Blossom is order, both trying to make their point but going too far either way and hurting each other when they try to correct each other over who is right.. Both having to learn the lesson when things are taken to the extreme and understanding why other people (Keane) would be annoyed in the chaotic behavior or bored with it.
Both of the original episodes had problems in that there was a lesson but whatever action leads up to that has no substance. All Painbow did was try to shove in memes as a means of 'too much fun' as well as having a near empty fight between the girls and Allergo. In Puffdora's Box, the entire thing is self contained and feels smoothed with it only being contained in the house with no real chaos going. For a show that is based on SUPER HEROES, there really is no real super hero action and if they're still trying to go for the more 'character driven' aspect, they haven't done that either. Both of the original episodes rely far too much on characters being 'RANDOM' and having SOME connection to their moral than to actually build a story to connect anything that feels real.
And if a good plot with the Boogieman can be put into one short, so can this. Or we can go the route similar to the episode where everyone gets switched which was a two-parter. Either way, the show isn't building stories, especially when they're saying they're being more character driven than the original. They're just ripping off things from either the original source material or from episodes from better done shows.

If you're going to apply they're heroes and kids thing, then this show has stripped them of the hero aspect since it treats them more like children than the original show EVER has, and they were supposed to be FIVE (or close to it) in the OG show. Here, we're SUPPOSED (I guess) to assume they're older given they're always placed into school situations that make them feel like they're in at LEAST middle school (highschool IS stretching it once you think about it)
All in all, the episodes are BORING and fail at delivering their message in even a short way. Call the example I gave hammered but nearly all the original episodes are hammered as well, with the obligatory 'character repeats the lesson once they see it and repeats it again at the end' stuff that you'd see in shows aimed at much younger audiences. Even the original show didn't do that when they were younger.
What I'm just saying is that the new show doesn't know how to balance whatever its trying to do. Its trying to seem 'deep' and have morals but all the morals are still flat and can be seen a mile away. They tried to stress the important of the girls being heroes but they are terrible super heroes, spending more time fighting with themselves in stupid situation elements than anything that has to do with battling monsters and saving the world. At least with the idea I presented, there would be an actual THREAT in which the girls would ACTUALLY be heroes like they were meant to be. Allergo failed as a threat because he didn't do anything and once he is defeated you realize he wasn't really ANYTHING. He wasn't like HIM where he was was truely malevolent. We find out he really was a small bear inside a larger costume who wanted to party. He caused trouble but when you find out that he wasn't as big a threat it took away the fun and made the girls seem weaker since they were in turn fighting a weaker villan.
The demons weren't as troublsome or fun as the Party Unicorns from Regular Show because we never get that feeling that they were 'cool' at first before shit started to hit the fan. I mean, Blossom was able to go back to the girls' room which wasn't destroyed. Everything felt so compacted in that episode and they were trying too hard to play safe for what reasons I don't know.
All in all, the writers of this new team are just playing it too safe with EVERYTHING and not allowing themselves to have actual FUN with these characters. That's why the girls seems so flanderized because they're their tropes to a T instead of expanding on them. Their battles are always so lacking in action and fun and the threats they face are never really 'threats', just random obstacles that feel like they would show up in a type of show where weird things happen but the main characters DON'T have supper powers and they'd have to figure out how to fix things like a normal human being. If this were the case, there is no point to the girls having powers or being super heroes at all which again misses the points of the girls being heroes all together.
It was nice to have episodes to have the girls show themselves off as kids in the old show but it was nicely balanced with the super hero elements so when those slow parts happened it sort of gave a nice human element to them to remind us that their girls. The new show is slow all out which leaves people to wait for those moments when the girls actually get a chance to be SUPER HEROES. Again, this makes no sense when we've had the message of the girls being heroes shoved into our faces so many times.

Oh GOD, I know! You can see the SU inspiration but....it's not so much INSPIRATION is it? If it were inspiration, you could see the POSITIVE effects where else here it feels like they're just taking notes without looking at the meaning. As if they don't understand WHY a lot of storybeats from SU work and why they keep missing the mark. Again, I think it's because they're playing 'safe' and not taking risk. Granted, SU is NOT the first animated series to tackle many of the issues that it has shown but it does it in a way that for its audience works. I can't imagine how SU would work if it IMPLIED it was going to take on an issue but then COMPLETELY avoided it all before crying out that it did.
That's what PPG2k16 feels like. It's one of those things that is going 'LOOK AT US! WE CAN DO IT TOO!!' but then it doesn't bring anything new to the table and what's worse is that it took a show that had it's own thing and made it boring.
You mentioned the baddies from the old show; most of them were funny in their own way and I will say that not all of them were hits but most of the main ones that everyone mentions ARE what made the show. The news ones really don't have a lot of staying power to them because other than Allegro, they don't do anything and even he wasn't 'evil' per say. Just his intentions were in the wrong place. As much as people hate him, MAN BOY is the only bad guy in the new series who feels like he's doing something, As badly exaggerated as he is (and a missed opportunity but if you want me to discuss that, let me know. I don't want to add too much to this reply) he's the only one of the new crew that feels EVIL. Bianca Bikin and her sister don't really do much and their attack on the girls only came because they were too tired to fight them which was BULLSHIT. Man Boy seriously has been the only villan who has made a return who's clear goal of defeating the girls has been shown and feels like an actual threat as he WILL come back and fight until he wins. Pack-Rat only comes in as a typical distraction that served only as a device and I don't know if they're ever going to bring him back after he was blown up in his monster form.
And then there is the INTERWEBZ bad guy but.....yeah. None of the baddies in the new show are a threat and in a way that takes away some of the agency the girls had. The best part about the show was seeing just how OUTLANDISH the bad guys' plans would be in order to reach THEIR goals and get rid of the girls but so far much more time has been dedicated to the girls having to deal with their own slice-of-life issues they bring on themselves. Either that or they try to push in a bad guy from the old show only to not accomplish much either.
It's just that the show is so EMPTY now and even if its a toy show that doesn't excuse it for being lazy, especially when the writers of the new series were so adamant in how much better they were going to make the show when it hasn't really done anything stellar at all. In fact, the toys for the show won't be coming out for another THREE MONTHS yet the show has been out since SPRING.

They're trying to go for that Steven feel but imagine if the SU characters acted as the PPG reboot ones and it would be....bad. REALLY bad. This is why it's better to be inspired rather than to straight up steal. Ameythyst already annoys me but if she were like Buttercup then she would have no sympathy because all she would be is someone who has no reason to act like a brat and be a poser for how 'cool' and better they are than anyone else. Pearl's neat-freakness would be off the charts and she would be too busy with keeping clean than to be an actual warrior. Garnet would be completly STUPID because she would miss the points because haha.....older characters are stupid? And Steven would just be stupid as well, spouting out memes instead of being a curious kid thrown into the middle of a bunch of things.
This is why people compare PPG2k16 to TTG because at least TTG is PARODYING the characters so the flanderization made sense when it began; it's exaggerating the characters. PPG plays it for straight and expects us to not only see the girls as heroes but see their choices as correct whenever a lesson is beaten over your head, only for it to go void with no character development, like the writers SAID they were going to do.
But I will give you a nod for pointing out that Manboy does seem to be Buttecup's bad guy which in a way is pretty nice but it begs to ask if the girls will get their own adversary, aside from their RRB counterparts of course. The whole Bikini sisters thing was just asking for more chaos yet it felt like nothing happened. The girls only got taken out from their own action of playing a video game character build screen so it just feels cheap. It's like the writers are scared to have the girls and the bad guys do ANYTHING anymore and for what reasons I don't know why.
The thing about sympathetic is that the best way to write them is not to force their sorrows on the viewers. A good writer would be able to show their issues without having to remind those at home we HAVE to feel sorry for them by obligation otherwise they come off as a character with nothing. This is why Packrat comes off as boring because he HAS nothing other than the pack-rat mentality and you don't feel sorry for because he still fights the girls anyway. It would have been a different story if we had seen any other part of his character (and it's a bit of a stretch to automatically label him as having a mental illness, especially when him stealing shiny things is based on RATS and other animals taking certain objects for their nest and it's played for laughs. He's basically a humanoid rat who is doing what he's supposed to be doing anyway)
Again, this is why a lot of people hate the writing of the new series. The crew went out of their way to boast about how superior they were going to make this new show out to be when compared to the old version when all it does it resuse plots from the old series (though to be fair, this can get a pass because a lot of reboots often pay homage by doing this. They just do it BETTER) and try to piggy back on more popular shows on CN on a whole 'skin surface' level and not realizing WHY some of those shows are popular to begin with. It tried to emulate the 'SO RANDOM' formula from the earlier seasons of Adventure Time but missed the mark and came off as annoying. It tries to have more 'serious' moments like Steven Universe but missed the mark and came off as boring and pretentious. It tries to play off the Clarence style as the art director from that show works on this but it comes off as stiff, uninspired and just plain awful to look at.
Yes, the PPG is nostalgia cash grab but you'd think that if these people wanted BIG BUCKS, they would have brought in people who knew what they were doing. Take the TMNT reboot crew; the show has been going strong since 2010 and that's because it hits EVERY note with the fandom and brings TOGETHER new and older fans rather than dividing them in terms of how much they enjoy the new series. The writing has been updated but not in a way that will badly age is, the art is new and amazing, especially for a series that made most of it's popularity flow from being animated in 2D, and the marketing knows how to target older fans and newer fans by making things available to them. We have yet to see anything like that come from the PPG.
And the Unicorn episode should be made into a monument that says 'THIS IS HOW YOU DON'T DO IT' in giant gold letters. It still irks me how they did that to the original writer; stealing their work and taking the credit for making a 'trans focused' episode when they never intended it to be that way at all. I can only give them props for not doubling back and then blaming the writer for it for as far as I have seen, they took full responsibility and apologized.

But there is a limit to Amethyst and the writers know better than to try to force the viewers to like her even with her backstory. Buttercup is just pushed to the forefront and we're expected to sympathize with her but in the simplicity of it, there is nothing to feel sorry about her. She's just a jerk and she keeps being a jerk for no reason other than 'I'M NOT LIKE OTHER X-!'
At least they built up a reason WHY Amy (shorthand spelling =P ) is the way she is and while she is not my fave character in the series, I GET it. Buttercup is just....well, she's just a jerk who doesn't seem to learn yet is getting the most attention thus far. There just doesn't seem to be a solid story in this series when compared to SU which makes it very clear that this is a story you have to follow in order. PPG can't even AIR in the correct order so it seems like evry episode they pull something out from under us that shows they don't care about the show but the POPULARITY it can gather for just existing. This show is basically a media version of getting a gold star for just being there while everything else EARNED the rewards and people are seeing just how messed up that is.
Bubs with her 'coding skills' would have worked had they not just.....plopped it there along with MOAR MEMES. Like Christ, are those the only jokes the writers can think of?
And Packrat is just played up for a joke but he is a joke that leads to nothing. As I said. his entire point is he is a Packrat....RAT. And he's just a creepy guy who takes things and acts weird with his dolls. No woobie backstory, just a packrat who is a packrat and was then turned into a rather boring looking monster. Imagine what they could have done had they mutated him with his dolls instead of just making him a bright lime green toxic waste monster. They keep missing chances to do something to....do something else that falls flat on it's face.
It shouldn't take THIS LONG for a show to start to get things rolling and thus far nothing has happened. If a show can't get you in within at least three episodes what is the point of staying for the ride? They really haven't built any more character from the girls other than
1)Blossom is obsessed with order and spends more time complaining about getting dirty than being a leader or fighting.
2) Buttercup is obsessed with her tough girl image much like how a stereotypical cheerleader trope would be with hers and always doing stupid shit episode by episode
3) Bubbles spouts out memes and catch phrases that are not only dated but will become dated by the time a year passes from this show coming out.
The 2k16 version more or less is a cheap late 90s/early 2000s girl-power type show that tries too hard to remind us about things that shouldn't be shoved into the face of the audience. If the girls were good characters on their own, they wouldn't repeat points about them over and over again as well as have them repeat the moral of the lesson.
In this past decade, it has been the in thing to try to make animated series 'deep' by trying to be down or making certain characters seem more than they are but I have only seen a few shows do this well while everything else goes back to the same tropes at the end of the day. All you have to do is imply some sort of 'issue' onto a character and people think they have something deep when it's more than that. All they've done is created a LABEL, not a character and PPG 2k16 is a show full of LABELS and just isn't fun. The older show parody a lot of things but it was at least enjoyable in what it was making fun of because it knew there was no point to being stiff or trying to pretend to be something that it's not. We have seen with the reboot that the show is riding so hard on other shows that other than carrying the PGG name and brand, it has nothing to stand on its own. It's just there in the line-up surrounded by shows that can tell stories better, that can develop characters better and can all out handle humor and action better.

How in the Freaking Hell did the Professor acquired Pandora's Box (which in the original myth it was no box but more of an Urn) and how the hell does the Spirits of Chaos are familiar with so advance and horrible culture, cause I am pretty sure Greeks didn't had cellphones (also this shows more when the dumb ghost punches the TV thinking its a mirror) and how the hell are they familiar with Rap Music!? This Spirits of chaos are basically your stereotypical College Stupids. And how the hell is hope such a Selfish little clone of Bubbles!
But man you miss the opportunity to make an awesome joke! When Hope gets the bike and goes away you could have said "I Think this describes the entire Reboot"
Ah thank you! And even though I wasn't a huge fan of it compared to the original: Monsters University did this sort of thing better.
I was actually going to use that ending line where Buttercup says "What is even going on right now?" to make a similar joke, but then I came up with that keyboard cat thing because it was 2am and I get my best (or stupidest depending on how you view it) ideas when I'm really tired.

And if that is what you meant, don't forget that the ghost's phone was also glowing just like the spirits were, and she had it when she came out of the box. I feel the same way but this has been a pattern with CN that everyone knows and jokes about. They always go on so deep about how they only want shows that sell toys and only keep shows that make bank with toys but they NEVER PRODUCE TOYS for the shows they cancel....because of toys!
The only other series I can think of that they did do well with toys was Ben 10 but other than that, nearly all the other modern CN shows rely on the teen and adult fanbase to sell them shit, not the kids CN keeps insisting they are aiming for.

Not gonna lie, I got pretty scared when they started rapping. So far this show is really strange for me. It's not as TERRIBLE as ppl say it is (all the time) and has some pretty intense laughing session like the hangover episode, but at the same time it makes me cringe. lol. Still worth watching tho imo.

Seriously so many nitpicks with this one for me but then again they are just nitpicks so I can't complain. However I agree that the moral seemed rushed and that many things needed to be explained. I mean how would the professor have Pandora's Box? I can understand if Him had it and gave it to the professor. They seemed to be on good terms since the Professor ate at his diner one time. Also sadly Blossom is becoming my least favorite character which I really don't like saying. She wasn't my favorite in the previous show either BUT that's because she reminded me of myself save the leadership part. I always feel awkward when a show can make me face myself or have a character that is WAY too on the nose like myself (watamote). Anyway you explained your points well and I look forward to your next review.

I'm not entirely sure why an inventor would study ancient magic when that's clearly not in his job description, but if he does it as a side hobby then it's not a big deal. Problem is, Frenemy came out after this episode, and I'm reviewing it as if this were the first time it aired. Therefore, his studies of witchcraft haven't been established yet.
