    In reference to the two from Generation Kill/One Bullet Away, I suspect that the show took some serious liberties portraying them as so inept. I’ve never met either much less fought with them, but I do know the USMC Infantry Officers’ Course is widely regarded as one of if not the most difficult non-special forces schools in the US military. Additionally, they would also have to be graduates of the Basic Reconnaissance Course and follow on force recon training.
    So I have doubts about their being as incapable as they were made to look in the show. It’s been a while since I’ve read either book so I can’t remember how they’re portrayed in print. (Reddit: @oga_ogbeni)
    FYI: The United States Marine Corps (USMC) Infantry Officers' Course (IOC) is extremely challenging. It requires high levels of physical fitness, mental toughness, and leadership ability. Candidates undergo rigorous physical training, master complex infantry tactics, and face high-stress situations to test their resilience and decision-making.
    The course also includes demanding academic components and maintains very high standards, leading to a high attrition rate. Graduates of the IOC are exceptionally well-prepared to lead Marine infantry units in combat.

      IRL he was not an infantry officer he was an intelligence officer put in command right before the push they were extremely short handed. This doesn’t happen anymore because of too many situations like this back in the initial push.

      Fick, Colbert, Poke, Ray, and Rudy have all made public comments about how the officer bashing in the show was unwarranted, and while there were some rough patches that it was no where near as bad as the show depicted. Now whether you want to believe it was them covering the Marines is your choice, but they have gone on record defending the CO’s at the time.

      @CJenkerson 4 месяца назад +37

      @@anthonywhite5565 not all Intel Officers are required to do so. Your ground intelligence officers do go to IOC, Sniper Leader’s Course, and the Ground Intel Officer School but they are not required to do SERE. And they go to Tactical Intelligence Officer Course, Marine Corps Intelligence Schools, at Dam Neck, VA before they do anything, not after. Either way, there is a large gap between being an Intel Officer and an Infantry Officer. This is coming from a retired Intel Marine. I’m not bashing our officers, just saying I would rather follow an Infantry Officer into combat over an Intel Officer.

      I have had to stop a CO from doing training once, it was 110 degrees in 29 palms. Was running out of IVs as we had been training for 2 weeks straight I had already asked for medical resupply and what I needed from the guys who went to go get food. This was pushing into the third week, and I had one iv left and 5 guys with heat rashes form. I straight up walked to our CO and said we have got to stop I cannot treat any more of your marines if another goes down. I am asking for 4 hours of stop training until the sun starts to set.
      He looked at me and said we deploy to Afghanistan in 4 months they have to be ready. I said they won't make it 4 month if you keep pushing now. So I went to the battalion CO and told him the exact same. He gave us till sundown to drop flak and Kevlar, set up camo netting. We would resume training one hour after sunset. I bought our guys 5 hours.

      Knew a guy who punched out an officer after knowingly leading men into an ambush that got several killed. Officer got shot back down to recruit and the guy got honorably discharged only because every command knew how shit the situation was and how right he was to retaliate against that officer once the reports from the survivors rose through the desks. Still, men lost their lives because of a terrible officer that had been complained about for months and showed absolutely no ability to handle a leadership role. And even if there were some kind of strange reality where the LT did try to do that, it wouldnt happen. The senior NCO leadership simply would not let it happen. There does come a point when your rank doesnt mean shit. If you start making calls out that purposely endanger your men, and its blatantly obvious that you are doing out of spite, and as a way to punish your subordinates for something, the men under you can depose you and take control of the unit from you. And you are going to have an awful lot to answer for from the big brass. Your military career as an officer is basically going to be over.

    There is a high performance vs high trust issue raised in Navy Seal team 6. They prefer high trust vs high performance. This scene depicts that lack of trust. It doesn't matter how competent; that's a symptom.What's needed is less speeches and more action.

      How so?

    • @Thevoiceofsomething
      @Thevoiceofsomething 4 месяца назад +2

      Idk, but I can speculate. I think he means to say, in this scene the men don't trust their the captain, as he has proven himself to be completely incompetent and shirts responsibility onto others. That is to say, his men don't trust him. The high trust vs high performance idea is a matter performance. To put it in a more understandable scenario, think about a lawn care company; you have your employees who show up, do the gardening in 1/2 an hour, the lawn is clean, cut, but it doesn't look overly special to anyone else's lawn in the neighborhood. They do 16 houses a day the same way. They make $800/day. But every couple of years they no longer have the same customers. Then you have the company who does 4 houses a day, spending 2 hours at each, not only do they mow the grass, they treat it for harmful weeds and bugs, it grows in thicker, more luscious, and they take care of the flower garden too. Their four customers have been using this service for a minimum of 10 years each, bringing in $800/ day. While both businesses bring in the same money, one is more reliable, and brings forth better service, and is trusted by their customers; while the other business gets a lot of customers haphazardly taken care of, and loses them every so often. Does that make any sense? Also think about getting a car serviced, take it to a speedy lube, or dealership, where they want as many cars in the gate as they can, or take it to the local town mechanic, who maybe a little slower, but doesnt over charge, and everyone trusts. The same goes in the military/ spec ops. While the military isn't a business, it is run like one. The seals prefer to have high profile missions, where failure is not an option but, with guys they trust, and a command who trusts them to do the job, without questioning their methods, but it is a slow methodical mission, than guys who take on a lot of smaller missions at a rapid pace. The guys who go on a lot, quickly, are the guys who go in guns blazing, for metals, and get their compatriots killed. The seals plan every move, and capture or eliminate a target without any one knowing they were there. At least that's the theory. As he said less speeches more action, this particular captain in GK is incompetent, his actions have shown that, he repeatedly put his men in harms way, let his NCOs either get in the way of the right action, or not let his NCOs do that action. But he talks a big game, as far as his men go, he wants to be a good leader, he wants his men to succeed, he probably wants his men to be victorious and remembered for something. He truely care for his men, but when he is under pressure, he cant make the right decisions. Like the saying goes, 'the beatings will continue until morale improves.' He is bringing morale down, because of his incompetence, and thinks being open and honest with his men will help improve that, when in reality, he needs to step aside and realize he isnt able to lead the men the way it should be done, and he isn't realizing the potential his men have, and that the are a well oiled machine that can run without him. I hope that all makes sense.

    I have not seen the show, but all Marine Infantry Officers pass the IOC. It is rigorous, they are the best. That being said, it is relative to call him incompetent. Doc is the real one. Always has, always will. If he says the officer is incompetent, then he may be the least competent Doc knows. The worst of the best. A new leader is worse than an experienced one. An experienced one promotes out of that position.

    As a prior enlisted Marine grunt and graduate of the Infantry Officers Course and several other rigorous military schools I can tell you that IOC is an extremely mentally and physically challenging course meant to weed out those not capable of leading their Marines in harms way. I suspect that all the Recon Officers during the OIF-1 timeframe all had a successful tour with a infantry battalion before going through a rigorous indoc and interviews before being given the opportunity to even attend BRC (let alone graduate a course with with well over 50% attrition). I for one have worked with Steve Fernando and have working alongside these fine warriors in Iraq and AFG and have nothing but respect
    for him and all the Marines and sailors of 1st Recon Bn.

    Any NCO hates it when an officer says "Speak freely. Tell me the truth, man to man." The problem is that there are always some officers who will not take criticism from an underling, especially one who he thinks is personally loyal. The captain in the short at least does not repond by ordering them all to attention and dressing them down for disrepect. He actually respects his promise, and that is not guaranteed.

    I have a similar system in my game to let players call in airstrikes. These systems are cool and fun! 😎
    Something I've done in my game (which you can borrow if you'd like): instead of the enemy team randomly calling in strikes, there's a physical enemy unit on the field that's doing it, and in a limited radius around that unit. This gives the player more counterplay options: prioritize taking out that enemy to eliminate the risk of strikes. Avoid proximity to that enemy when possible, etc.
    You could style this enemy as a radio operator, and give him an obvious antenna backpack and sfx/vfx to help the player identify the threat. 😃
