I believe the Logistics Office is where I worked out of and was the 561TFS Aircraft Generation Squadron offices and break room. I also worked out of the massive hangar for a couple of years doing Phase inspections on F-4E/G aircraft. Good to see the area put to use, and the new buildings look very nice in that area of now removed ghost buildings.

Good to hear from someone that was there. As you can see the old base has changed. City of Victorville is working on new construction on the west side of the airfield. Thanks for commenting.

I realize George was closed due to BRAC but I thought subsequently, it was determined to be a superfund toxic waste site due to the sand/soil contamination with JP4 jet fuel. So, the logistics area is operating and new structures have gone up for new business, but how will the employees remain healthy? Confused here. I was a Ssgt in the Emergency Department for five years in the eighties and PCSd to AK right before its closure, so I'm familiar with the flightline layout.

While I am not an expert with the air base, my understanding, based on locals, is that there are still a few area that are need of cleaning up. The few GAFB veterans that I has met talk about the north side of the base. They feel that is the area that hold the most contamination. There was a local newspaper report a few years back that stated that there was to be cleanup of an area south east of the base. It was stated that the cleanup was due to contamination from WW2. I did find this on the EPA website: “In 1991, the Air Force began operating a pump-and-treat (PAT) system with air stripping for groundwater contaminated with TCE under OU-1's northeast base area that migrated off base”. I would have to guess that some areas that have not be restored or developed must be due to contamination issues. Such as the housing area and the golf course. Most of the new development is being done on the west side of the airfield. As for the health of the current employees, I too wonder. For the EPA report, I did a search for George Air Force Base Waste Cleanup. It was at the top of the Google search.

In my personal opinion, the city of Victorville, in the pass, did not have the right leadership to bring in new businesses into the site. At the beginning the focus seemed to create a logistics airport with hopes of businesses coming to the desert to support it. But, the City of Victorville decided to get into the power plant business which failed. There were a few law suits and plenty of finger pointing. All this seemed to take away from expanding the old Base. Yet, companies like Boeing, GE Aviation, ComAv, and General Atomics stayed with Southern California Logistics Airport and are a big part of our community. While the progress has been slow in developing the former AF Base, the city seems to be working hard in bring new companies in. Some other businesses also include Dr Pepper Snapple, Red Bull, Sparkletts, Solar City Corporation, United Furniture Industries, and many others. Thanks for your comments.

It wasn't condemned, it was shut down as part of BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) which essentially closed the bases that the military didn't need and combined them with others to cut down on costs. They did the same thing with MCAS El Toro in Irvine, which is now about 15 high density housing developments and a park. Building on potentially toxic land in the HD is much cheaper than building somewhere in the IE, and fewer zoning restrictions.
