Remember also, those veterans have lived all their life with some horrific memories. One of my clients went to France with the British Legion as a D day veteran. He is 96 & he has some war stories that are not pretty. He is also an Arnhem veteran & there were only 2000 men who came out of that alive. I have the greatest respect for him & all his generation.
Nice to see/hear the three musketeers back together. Thanks for the sharing.
Hey Adam. I for one am all about you talking about other areas of photography. I watch your channel mostly because of you personally, and less what you're discussing. My favorite videos of yours are the ones in which you talk about the social and philosophical aspects of RUclips and photography in general. You are clear and concise and a pleasure to listen to. Keep it up. Thanks.
Another interesting chat. My dad was on D Day, btw, but his landing craft grounded in a sandbank. He had a view of what was happening from where he was stuck. He then landed on the next tide, I think. I suppose that's why I'm here today!
Like most of the hero's he probably owed his luck to fortune, no matter what shape fortune favoured him. Very moving xx
Gary Gough very true.
Great chat guys, with a good range of subjects. The closing piece about the armed forces is close to my heart. I gave the RAF 30 yrs and went to various conflict areas, but it was my job, I got paid, you just do it ( as Adam will know). Being involved in the London Olyimpics showed the love for the armed forces, we have a lot to be proud of. Like wise you guys should be very proud of the content you create and the hours that go into one 15min vlog, it is very much appriciated, thank you.
Spot on, guys, with everything. I can't add anything else except that my kids don't think i'm cool anymore (yes, they actually did at one point) so don't hang around with me when i'm doing anything photography related, so like Paul says, enjoy that time while you can.
Very enjoyable episode with straight talking subjects and your insights into your respective upcoming ventures
Thank you xx
Thanks for that guys really enjoying these just makes me think I’m sat in the pub with all three of you. By the way it’s your round Paul.
Listened on my phone while out taking some shots the other evening. Really enjoyed it.
Another great podcast Lads well done.Respect to yourselves and Veterans past and present
As a freelance press photographer covering sports, the amount of work after the job has taken place is huge, actually the whole thing from start to finish is mind blowing long and tiresome but the rewards just like landscape photography can be magical.
The preparation is no different to anything else in photography. The equipment is the same albeit with a larger lens. The time involved is the same. What is not the same is the number of shots taken, knowing what is a good image as to a poorly executed image, an image that has action and drama and passion, an image that has advertising if that is what was asked of, getting the images out fast for the world and done in real time.
Three types of sports photographer exist.
1. The staff photographer who works for a newspaper
2. The agency photographer &
3. The freelance photographer
All three are competing against each other to take the image that captures the moment of glory, pain, or whatever it may be. Usually the agency photographer will be at the pitch side along with camera an a laptop. The staff photographer for a newspaper or tv station will have his fellow colleagues working in the media room. Both the agency and staff Photographers will be real time sending out the images as soon as they are taken. Whereas the freelancer can be doing this or if by themselves, then editing either at half time or at full time.
The rate of images taken for game depends of the sport and nature of what is being sought, usually 1800 images, with a hit rate of 10% and with the keeper rate for the press world being at 2% of images taken.
Having covered international level sporting events, from the Olympics, Commonwealth and European level to that of premiership and first tier events of rugby, football, tennis, gymnastics, athletics, shinty, to that of indoor sporting events. You will find that it is very exhaustive, late nights and long hours, being at the ready if something happens suddenly. The same applies for covering news events such as major disasters, civil unrest, to that of when international visitors are over such as various dignitaries etc. The amount of pre work, then photography followed by editing and captioning your images ready for press release, it can be very difficult.
As a freelancer you have to get out there and find the work, so that in itself is a chore. You then have to get Accreditation to those events, expenses of travel and normal every day costs or sleep overs. On average per year, I personally travel some 14000 miles, now that's covering events such as premier league and first league football and rugby, both international level events and elsewhere. Many of my fellow sport togs travel 20 to 30,000 miles as they cover world wide events wither daily or weekly per year.
Yes, we get to meet many folk and have a great craic with those people who are on the high flying level of stardom, but its dam hard work and they pay is not what everyone is lead to believe...
The WW2 photographers and filmmakers were two fold, they were made up of companies of soldier's who were also qualified in media and the rest were professional photo and film journalists who were employed by the War Department. edition.cnn.com/style/article/d-day-photographs-chronology-iwm/index.html

Great comment Paul. Thanks for taking the time to write it .
About the famous Vietnam girl it was the photographer, Nick Ut, who took the photo as well as another American photographer who got her to the hospital and saved her life. She is alive today because this photographer insisted that the doctors treat her.
The photographer who photographed Robert Kennedy in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel was Bill Eppridge. He was working for Life magazine at the time.
D-day photographer I believe you're talking about was Life magazine Robert Capa. He landed with the first wave of soldiers and after shooting three rolls of 35mm film with his Contax cameras he somehow got aboard a landing craft and made it back to England where his film was developed and also destroyed except for about a dozen image from one roll.
A great podcast. Loving the angles as well. Some really interesting points that you raise about earning cash from RUclips.
Great guys as always and from an ex forces member thank you.
Working the camera angles in this one. Love that, great for the people who watch the podcast on youtube like myself.
A fine episode gents. Congratulations to Adam on his achievement! That’s amazing. 😊👏🏻 just heading to watch Gary’s chat show vid now 😊 I know a pap tog. His stories are eye watering. He watched the royals for years and yes he’s very much a businessman not a tog. No art in his mind when he sits there with a 600mm lens. It’s certainly not something I can relate to.! Tho it’s a dirty job I guess it needs doing. A wonderful tribute gents. As a country we need to show far more respect for veterans! As gary said it’s incredibly different in the US. So many films provide an invaluable education as to what it might have been like. We are just so damn lucky! Love the emotion in this chaps. Very well done.. ❤️😊
OK then, next episode - Introducing "The Triplets" with Adam "magic fingers" on Guitar, Shower vocalist / Mr Gary "Tom Jones" Gough lead singer, and the infamous spiritualist and all round good guy - Mr Paul G Johnson on the tambourine. Surely, you guys couldn't be as bad as the Spice Girls! Greg
lol I'm an awesome triangle player, I think I can multitask :)
I joined adams group at 50k and paul and gary i started following with the launch of the podcast. I do agree with adam that a variety of photography genres would make his channel more interesting just because I enjoy all aspects of photography as well as landscapes.
Cheers Ross
I was surprised a little to actually become more and more interested in this video as it went on. I think what worked for me here is the fact that I get to see you three from a different perspective. The information which Adam shared was an eye opener. I would certainly expect a RUclipsr with 100k subscribers to bring home a bit more revenue then what he mentioned. Great podcast/video, you got my subscription and the bell click and I am looking forward to seeing more of it.
Gary your idea of the chat show is also great I think. I would love to see Joe Cornish there.
Cheers from Canada.
Your best yet gentlemen! Just chatting and banter. The light in the room was lovely too, did you start using a Nikon to film Gary 😂 the video seems to have more clarity and depth. All joking aside, best podcast yet 😊👍 a thought at the end, we should never forget what was given. So we can freely record and share our lives.
You were off my Christmas card list Mali but you brought it back at the end with those lovely words xx
Gary Gough I have so much to say about what you all discussed but it would be five pages long. Brilliant podcast! So glad I’m back on the list. You know your my fav 😂 (kiss ass) hehehe
Great podcast and the boss is back!
Nice one guys, once you got past missing beards and introducing Paul what's his name :-D There are a lot of Ex forces people out there that have taken up the camera to pass the time so I look forward to what Gary has planned. :-D
Funnily Alan, I just emailed a couple of military Photographers requesting an interview. Fingers crossed
Love your podcasts guys. Follow all of you on you Tube. Have a few questions for you - 1. Ho does a photographer become a brand ambassador? 2. Are Paul’s kids interested in photography? How would you encourage young people into using a DSLR instead of a Smartphone, 3. Landscape photography seems to have bit of a ‘middle-aged Man’ appeal. Lots of women out there (like me) who love it too. Any women photographers who interest you or might make a good interview? Keep up the good work. 👍
If you are local Chris , would you like to come on the show? I was out on sunday with my wife and children and i hardly had hold of the camera as both Evelyn and Matthew kept asking to take pictures. :)
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography Hi Paul, No, not local and I am only a person who takes photographs, not a Photographer. Would love to see some of the shots your children had taken if you ever get the chance. Thanks, Chris
Damnit - thanks for making me breath manually. Now I need time to get it back to automatic :-)
The folks that stormed the Normandy beaches are, in large part, why many of us do not, today, speak German as a first language!
An emotive and thought provoking podvlog Gents. Those veterans were hailed as heroes last week. This week they have had there free TV licence taken from them. Hmmmmm
Cheers Diz
great podcast if you want a good ww2 movie The Pianist ...my grandad watched it before he passed away and he said it was a close film you will get to what hitler and the nazis was like in poland its so sad made me cry (as i always asked my grandad what it was liek in ww2 but he would never say anything apart from that film was close
I'll look it up Adam, thank you xx
That is an incredible film. I’m a huge Adrian Brody fan and he played the part incredibly. A very moving film.
Agreed, superb film got it on DVD along with load of other classic war movies. I remember seeing Saving Private Ryan in the cinema. I came out mildly shellshocked as there'd been nothing like it before. Also must recommend the recent documentary series The Vietnam War (Ken Burns), that's an absolute masterpiece.
Your Studio is huge!
As a VA employee my perception of how the US treats its veterans (and by extension its veterans' services professionals) is a little different, but of course I'm lacking international context.
One question, would any of you have a suggestion for either free or inexpensive software for video editing?
Take a look at DarkTable for a Lightroom style and Gimp for a Photoshop style. Both are free and open source!
@@Snowcatnz2 Actually I've worked with both, they are my go to on the laptop but was asking about video
@@TimberGeek Ah ok my apologies I miss read the question. Here are three free open source video editors that appear to have good reviews. www.openshot.org/ www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor obsproject.com/
Great vlog guys, interesting chat about the revenue from YT. PGJ Please find me a driving job with 9 to 5 hours for decent pay, and I'll be there in a heartbeat. I currently start at 06:30 and quite often finish at 18:30 or later six days a week just to pay the bills. Adam, the subscription model seems to be the way to go these days, Look at Adobe and others, Karl Taylor's site is now sub based, I wish you good luck with your venture.
Yeah sorry TIm. I was generalising a tad
Tops again guys 👌👌
Interesting to hear about "Raw Room" Adam - I think I'm in probably the minority of people who actually pay for youtube premium to take away the ads, which I pay for happily as I've gotten so much from it but as creators like yourself feel the need to take your more in depth stuff away from the platform, which I totally understand, I am feeling more inclined to move on from the Platform.
Being honest at this point I'm quite unlikely to subscribe to lightroom as I'm mainly a portrait guy and your focusis very much landscapes I consume your RUclips content because it's photography and I have very broad tastes.
However I am inclined to look more closely at KelbyOne which has a much broader range of things with so many different creators on the platform. I appreciate the depth that somewhere like Fstoppers and RGU go to but like yourself I do prefer the subscription model as it feels less of a risk.
As a consumer I would perhaps encourage you to team up with other educators that you know maybe those who have much to give but aren't interested in making videos themselves much like Scott Kelby has on the otherside of the water use your videographer skills to put them on your platform.
Whatever you do though I hope it goes well for you, it's always great to see relatively local people doing well.
The kid your referring too from sheffield is Morgz on youtube. He has 10million subs. The young kids love his channel but as an adult he and his family will destroy your brain cells. My head hurts just thinking about it....my youngest watches it 😂😂
I enjoy this show but Paul and Adam, mostly Paul need to stop talking over Gary when he’s talking. let him finish before you what he’s saying ffs.
we are not professional broadcasters. We will try harder
