      This may sound dumb, but is it a major problem if whilst in use there is a heavy down pour of rain or even snow at this time of year. I ask as I do not have a shack just a pop-up gazeeboo

    • @BBQLIFE
      @BBQLIFE  2 года назад +1

      So long as you don't have a stream of water pouring in you should be fine. If a fee rain drops get in while your cook they will turn to steam because of the heat.
      Snow (cold in general) start things up really slow so you don't school the ceramic

    Hi Tom. Having bought my AK last year, have not had much chance to use it in anger yet, just some minor barbequing! However, I have experienced the same problems as you with the top vent lid being too loose. As a model engineer, my solution was to drill out the pin around which the vent swivels and replace it with an appropriate sized Metric round headed bolt, Nut and Washer. This worked O.K. ish! The problem being that as the AK heated up. everything gets hot (of course) and therefor the clearance between the fixed part of the vent and the rotating vent lid was reduced and the vent lid became stiff again!. Slackening off the bolt only reintroduced the original problem! My solution was to machine a new pin out of Stainless Steel on my lathe and fit this with a spring washer between the domed pin head and the top surface of the vent swivel lid resulting in the expansion of the surfaces to be compensated by the spring washer. So far, this is working well! Using a spring washer with an ordinary Metric bolt should work as well although there may be some binding of the swivel vent due to the exposed threads on the bolt. Thanks for the videos. Look forward to seeing more of your hints and tips

    • @BBQLIFE
      @BBQLIFE  2 года назад

      I was thinking along the same lines, drill it out and reattach with a bolt spring amd nut. Hoping the spring tension will be enough to hole it in place.

    Hay man! For your peeve with the top vent. Try spinning your vent so that the pivot pin is at 3 o’clock. (In your video, yours is at 6 o’clock). That way the vent doesn’t swing closed when you open the lid. And If you had it closed already then it stays closed. Hope that works for you!

    Hi Tom - I have the 2022 model, I’m not sure if this the same on earlier models but the main cooking grill has a small hinged section at one side that hinges upwards and I just wondered what it’s for? I was thinking to allow you to add charcoal but it would be quite awkward and clearly no use when the heat deflector was on. Just wondered if you knew what the purpose of it was!

I am really interested in switching over to an Aldi Kamado but concerned about the small size when cooking for larger groups. Would be great to hear any thoughts you may have?

      Oh all the time mate the AK serves a purpose for me very well. If I need to cook a lot it goes on the big Joe but that takes a long time to heat up and comes with some other issues. If I’m just cooking something smaller it always goes on the AK, or if I’m in a rush as it heats up so much faster. In terms of quality, the AK holds its own very well against the Joe and has in fact given me far less problems in the year I’ve had it than the Joe has in the few months I’ve had that. Absolutely brilliant bit of kit and well worth people jumping on if they bring it back on sale again.
