- Switzerland has won the Eurovision Song Contest. Nemo is the first nonbinary contestant to take home the crystal microphone. Their song "The Code" is a drum-and-bass, opera, rap and rock tune about Nemo's journey of self-discovery as a non-binary person.
This year's contest was overshadowed by days of protests against Israel's military actions in Gaza. Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators have rallied in the host city Malmö in Sweden to oppose the participation of Israel.
But after the contest was over and the votes were tallied, Switzerland's winner Nemo faced the press - and flew the flag of pride.

When talent is the last thing that is higlighted of the winner, shows what a political b.s. this show has become.
It was a good song as well tho.
Nah, it just shows what the MEDIA is focussing on. There is massive talent!
@@Mrzebra11 yes. But many people like presumably the comment here, do not quite grasp that ESC is quite important to the LGBTQ community, so they are both prominent among the participants and audience. Which makes candidates gender identity a lot more of a valid thing to shine the spotlight on here than it usually would be imo.
Blame it on DW. There are many videos about Nemo's singing technique or the song.
@@sizanogreen9900 that's a good point!
I don't know why is this even called song contest anymore.
Be honest, did you even watch the performance, or are you just being bitter on the internet
It has never been a song contest.
@@renanbp In "a song contest", there is the word "song". Ideally, that contest should be broadcasted on the radio as the audience then could judge on the singing performance, and not be distracted by the outfits (more and more ludicrous, imo), the gender and/or sex life of the performers that, I, for one, don't really give two hoots about!
@@micade2518 It's called Eurovision, not Euroradio lol from the very beginning it was about visuals too, hairstyles, costumes, dance routines etc etc When ABBA won the contest 50 years ago, for example, there was all of that, not just a singing performance.
And if you think people win because of their "sex life", then you really didn't watch the winning performance this year - which was very impressive and beautifully sung - and you're just there being grumpy on the internet, just because...

THE NONBINARY SONG CONTEST 😅😅
The scores for the first two were inverse for the public vote and the jury vote. The public went massively for the second place finisher Baby Lasagna from Croatia while the jury was massively for the winner. The jury voted almost sixty percent more for the winner than the runner up.
Yeah, it looks like the jury made the difference large enough that the televote would not matter.
Same thing happened last year with Sweden and Finland.
Croatia had only little more public votes than Israel, lot of jury didn't vote for Israel due to politics. In reality the winner also could have been Israel (on of the best songs this year). Don't get me wrong, Croatia has fun, catchy song and amazing show but vocal vise it wasn't anything spectacular. Switzerland was amazing on that point. I didn't expect to vote for Switzerland but he sang so well that even I voted.
Last year when Sweden won instead of Finland you could even hear frustration and not acceptance from audience, this time audience cheered with winner.
People also adored Israel - 300-something points, while the jury barely even voted for it just to not seem like they support the war, instead of just judging the song and performance.
Baby lasangna was horrible and very monoton! Its soundet like a drunk group of boys at a soccer game!

@@krollpeter It is not a lifestyle, calling it that is just ignorance.
Growing up non-binary in a world where everyone is either woman or man was horrible, I didn't even have the words to describe what I was for most of my life!
So you better get used to seeing us around. We have just as much of a right to exist in society without masking what we are as anyone else, and we're not taking ignorant bs from ill-intentioned people anymore.
So we have a camera woman who does something that is not allowed, she abuses privacy with her camera or Joost Klein. Joost defends his privacy and asks her several times to stop invading his private life and asks her to adhere to what is allowed. The camerawoman makes it clear that she has no intention of doing so, after which Joost makes it clear with a gesture that in the event of further infringement of his privacy, he will make filming impossible with the camera himself.
Response from the EBU: that camera woman is immediately suspended and an apology is offered to Joost.
But yes, the EBU wants to act tough and in a conflict between a woman and an artist, even though it is against its own rules, the lady who broke the rules and thus caused the situation is chosen.
The follow-up is clear: that board will resign and Joost will receive enormous compensation. And this camera woman will never be allowed in again. Nowhere.
I've been watching this thing for years and this isn't the first time😅😅😅😅 are you kidding me?!?
Gay guy wins Eurovision shocker
It is the first time a non-binary person wins. We had a transgender person before, and a drag performer before, but no non-binary people had ever won.

Salvador Sobral, who won Eurovision in 2017, disclosed this year that he was born intersex (with physical characteristics of both sexes). This is seldom discussed publicly and, sadly, people often feel that they have to go to great lengths to hide it, but it impacts maybe around 1 out every 200 people (accurate estimates are difficult when there's so much secrecy around it), so there may well have been others before.
what? 1 out of 200 people? Stop dreaming
@vladimirtocitu4140 Read, for instance, the Wikipedia entry on intersex, and the references provided there. It's a spectrum. If you include all deviations from standard male and standard female, it's as high as about 1 in 50. If you define it strictly as completely ambiguous, in the middle and not closer to either, it's as low as about 1 in 2000.
@@vladimirtocitu4140 A lot of people don't know their intersex for a long time, because it used to be standard for doctors to surgically 'correct' intersex babies, sometimes without parents knowing. It also can be difficult because babies aren't typically karyotyped, or sometimes its as an adult they find themselves suddenly without any testosterone or estradiol (happened to a dear friend of mine). There are even cases where an elderly man goes to the hospital with a hernia, and ooops, suddenly find out they have a full uterus and ovaries as well
this should be talked about more, but just to be clear to people reading this comment, being intersex and being non-binary are not the same thing at all, most intersex people are of binary gender
Nemo is still the first non-binary person to win Eurovision as far as i know
@tubebrocoli Very true -- I didn't mean to conflate the two, thank you for adding this clarification here.
No it's not, they bought the jury as the swedes did in the previous eurovision contest.
And you know this how?

@peterp4037 you're crazy, the juries know music better than the general public and base it off of technical standpoints. There is no doubt that both Sweden and Switzerland were better than Finland and Croatia
The juries are educated people ffs and know what they're doing, meanwhile you got weirdos voting for "Meow cat please meow back" 🤣

The gap between Jury and the people at home is to high.
Its about the majority of people and not about a small group of jury’s, represending only 0,0000000000001% of the people.
I feel that the focus that Eurovision has had on queerness for the past years takes away from the artistic part , they focus too much on sexual and gender identity.
Each year it becomes more queer and more sexual. It becomes a closed space to the general audiance.
And it also just reduces queerness to hyper sexual or hyper offensive stereotypes.
Also the number of weird incidents where a person with a high chance to win being disqualified and such have increased , overall the production is not as entertaining anymore.
The entertainment part of the show is not covering for it's bad sides anymore and this will most likely be the last time I watch it.
Me too. I completly agree.
“Reducing queerness to hyper sexual stereotypes” is so spot on and a huge issue if you consider how much it turns away Eastern Europeans viewers not just from ESC but gay acceptance as a whole. I see first hand how much “gay activism” hurts gay acceptance in many parts of the world.
When was it ever about artistic value?
No
what is non binary ?
Can’t u tell from looking at this being ?looking like his namesake,Nemo.
Basically when a person identifies as anything other than a traditional male or female as a gender. ......the following is a definition I found online, Non-binary people may identify as an intermediate or separate third gender, identify with more than one gender, no gender, or have a fluctuating gender identity. Gender identity is separate from sexual or romantic orientation: non-binary people have various sexual orientations.
Crazy confused people who don’t know what they are.
They are attention seekers
An attention seeker
it was fixed by the jury. The croatian guy (who is straight) receiver deliberatly very few points from the jury.
The real winner is from public votes
So Croatia first, Israel second? And you tell me the public cares so much about the art / music?? Btw, are you sure the Croat is straight?
I think practically every nation had some LGBT performer in the act. Croatia probably too, but I don't think it's correct to speculate
@@konmoe121 personally I prefer song with strong text with singing abilities. Today Eurovision is no more that. Now is a party for Homosexual people and once was song contest Concours Eurovision de la chanson. So niether of the songs are good for me... I guess the youth people are different nowdays
@@konmoe121 how I know it was fixed? The Eurovisio are paying big money for tasting the public by organizing polls
Very simple the gap between jury and public points given to Switzerland wasn't big so much and by the Croat it was a huge gap ...the Eurovision knew that The Croatia is winning by the public so they reduced on maximum the jury points given to them.

Wait!? What does non binary have anything to do with making music tho? Im not hating, good on you. But gender shouldn't be the criteria to making good music right?
That's like saying "this gas attendant pumps 101% more efficiently because they're non binary, compared to your regular attendant". Doesn't make sense. Good music is all that people want to know you can do.
first, the song is about being non-binary so obviously it makes sense to talk about it
and it is notable when someone from a minority that's heavily discriminated against breaks through and wins an international competition
in Switzerland, where Nemo is from, you can't even be legally recognized as non-binary, you can't have even your actual gender on your id. you can guess the kind of hurdle this and everything else we are subjected to causes
gender shouldn't be a notable thing, but it is, and only because of how society treats us non-binary people badly. this is more like "this athlete, who has a weird hair color we don't like so we tied a bunch of weights to them, still won 1st place" - their hair color would be notable in this case
there's a reason this is the first time ever a non-binary person wins at Eurovision, it signals how society is slowly getting more aware and accepting of us, and that's cause for celebration
It has as much to do with it as anything else. Music is art, and art is expression.
Who you are naturally informs what you want to express.
If you're a white cis male, like myself, growing up in a white cis world, it's unlikely that that part of me is worth writing about, cuz it hasn't really been a part of me that people cared about.
Growing up gay in en countryside however, that's gave me life lessons and informed my outlook.
Just a dude...
and this is why I stopped watching the ESC years ago.
Can't stand the fact that queer people are accepted enough in society that when one of us has talent and puts in the massive work required to win a competition like this one, this is recognized just like anyone else's, eh?
What a sad thing to admit.
Because you disagree with the chosen winner?
This contest has become about everything else and singing is at the last place, plus from the time were almost every contender started to sing in English the whole thing started to feel like a huge cliche.
The title literally disregards the whole reason why Nemo won Eurovision. It was because of their song and performance and all of that has been overshadowed for being non-binary
Think now again, you sure it was bc of the song? Eurovision got a lot of heat bc of Israel, so by doing this, they have done something morally good...
Well I guess you're right, especially after the Joost dq. I don't think Eurovision will be the same after that

Rubbish competition.
Honestly, I'd say this year Eurovision song contest was quite biased not cuz of Switzerland and enby ordeal but because of both Israel and Ukraine having wars and people of course supporting those both countries. Don't get me wrong, supporting them is amazing and honourable and I don't say its bad to do that but to me this year's Eurovision song contest to me felt quite charged up with such stuff instead of focusing on spectacles of event that usually made such event to be unique and fun to watch. If everyone is in comments fussing about Switzerland's submission, why no one's fussing over Ireland's submission of screaming, chanting, overtop theatrics? Hm?
Israel did have really good song and performance. Ukraine wasn't bad either it's just there are about 2 to 3 million Ukrainians living at the moment in Europe and they can vote. Ireland was another story, good show, screaming not so much. The fussing about Switzerland makes me sad, everything is reduced to wearing a skirt, the part where he has amazing voice and vocal capabilities and that he gave as amazing performance is diminished.
@@euLienee yeah I agree, him pulling off highest notes so flawlessly and not dropping beat ESPECIALLY with dnb genre and rapping on top is something extremely amazing and unique. Please don't consider this a personal attack. It is just me not understanding why this garbage "won" anything.
I tried to watch it, but it was just too much exhibitionism (in a bad way). I tried to listen only and there was nothing that I wanted to "hum". Is Eurovision the same contest won by Abba? And there were so many beautiful songs before at Eurovision. When did this musical event became a circus? Let's leave aside that maybe I don't understand "what art is", please be kind and point to me a 20 seconds sequence from "Nemo - The code" that you want to "sing"/"hum".
In my memory I was associating Eurovision with the Abba songs, or A-Ba-Ni-Bi, L'enfant et l'oiseau, Apres toi, Ein Bischen Frieden, Diggi-Loo Diggi-Ley and on and on... Songs that I can LISTEN without feeling cringe, songs that I enjoy, decade after decade...
"Creative song" - I think that I don't understand the musicality of what's supposed to be a "modern song". Where is the structure, where is rhythm, WHERE IS THE SONG?
This garbage won the Eurovision? I feel so sorry for us :( The looneys are running the asylum.
