Will Trudeau’s EV mandate kill Canada’s auto sector?

- In a recent column, economist Ross McKitrick argues that government subsidies and mandates are driving EV production and adoption, but high costs will lead to losses for automakers, with Canada’s 2035 mandate for all new light-duty vehicles to be electric or hybrid potentially causing long-term economic harm unless EV production costs decrease significantly. McKitrick joined True North’s Andrew Lawton to discuss.

Theres no way Im buying an EV. They aren’t better for the environment.
You can't even park an EV in most underground parking lots because of the risk of fire..
Insurance for EVs will be cost prohibitive for most Canadians.
Absolutely it will kill Canada's Auto sector
Looking good! We need more green energy and bike lanes in Toronto and Montreal. Fossil fuels should be illegal outside Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
What wise financial decision has Trudeau ever made? He is driving us down a rabbit hole of failure.
Laughing all the way too!
He’s deluded by his ego and the WEF.
I have no desire to buy a stupid EV ever, Trudeau is gone anyways
No because we aren't going to buy them. Period.
The EV market is a disaster based on many aspects. A COMPLETE DISASTER! They just completed a CHARGING station behind my bank in EDMONTON. I actually LAUGHED out LOUD! I asked the bank manager if they increased their FIRE INSURANCE. NIMBY thankyou. yeah we REALLY NEED EVs in EDMONTON a hub of OIL and GAS. What a JOKE! I see they're ALREADY cutting the "Filler HOSES" and selling the copper in California.
What about uranium production in Afghanistan?
People that own a EV are starting to regret owning one. all garbage.
I believe that is the plan.
I just got cut off by an entitled EV driver yesterday. Just adds to my hatred of EVs. I used to be pro-EV....until I did my research on them and until they got shoved down our throats by Turd-eau. Hopefully the next government will undo all these HORRIBLE Liberal policies.
It’s such a dumb idea it will never happen.
#QUESTION-> Does everyone KNOW Quebec has some of the Highest Grade Lithium Mines....
Does the WAR on Oilsands make sense now? Who Profits in 2030 if we go Battery Based Storage and renewables?
Guess who won't be using any electric vehicles?
Turdeau and kill in the same sentence gets my attention
I don't think anyone in western Canada will purchase Trudeau's crappy electric sh!t
boxes.
This whole EV mandate will be HISTORY next year when Pierre Poilievre is sworn in as Canada’s next Prime Minister! Those are the cold hard facts!
Depends on what King Charles has to say.
I hope so, but I do not trust any politician. I will believe it when it actually happens. How many times have politicians made promises to get elected and then break them as soon as they are in office????????
🤞
the EV do not work in below -10 and what do we see in central Canada 8 months of cold
It will never last long enough, once he is out all his ridiculous policies will be abolished. At least they better be. Yes I'm talking to you Pierre 🤞🏻
He's completely filled the Senate. Want to guess what's going to come of it?
I hope so, but I do not trust any politician.
@@desireeclarins5491 Agreed but I'm staying optimisticly hopeful 🙏🏻
Irony is they were really serious about "climate crisis" & really wanted people to buy EVs they would allow cheap chinese EVs..of course that would destroy our auto industry
There is a limited supply of battery material in this world to create batteries what's going to happen when they no longer can mine for these materials no interest here
Not even listening as the headline (Will Trudeau’s EV mandate kill Canada’s auto sector?) ANSWERS!!
YES!!!~!!
No, we will get rid of trudope next year or sooner.
You have to get through Singh first. Fat chance of that.
I wouldn’t be to concerned of the automotive industry in Canada. It’s the consumer forced into technology that is extremely expensive to initiate an investment in.
A decent gasoline or diesel vehicle in Canada can last 20 years , with many of them outside, in harsh environments. Being trapped in to owning these vehicles is a risky venture, with unknown risks and we would expect our electric vehicles to last 20 years with out battery replacements or major replacements. Not having a garage to park these vehicles in, leaving them exposed to humidity and snow and cold, with wind blowing in blizzards getting moisture in and onto electrical connections, and not having a battery sit in a fridge at -40 for months on end and years of use, is just a scary thought being forced into more financially unstable situations and adding more inflation to homes in Canada with unknown repairs waiting.
Plus , understanding the components to a battery, you better be able to mine the raw materials in democratic countries and in allied countries. Not communistic or authoritarian or warring countries, to support the material for batteries
I hope so. Canadians voted 3 times for justin to destroy the country. Go for it!
Undoubtedly, but it would be a surprise that canadians want more punishment by voting for him again next year. Pierre needs to cut a massive amount of red tape to even dream of canada being a place where money comes back to invest
This type of change is something that must be approved by Canadians through an election. The Government has no authority to implement these type of changes without that approval.
Don't forget trump is ending electric vehicles in the states so yes this isn't going to last at all in Canada period 😅
once Pierrie gets in he will reverse this
Let's hope so. I don't trust any politician.
Yes.
Boy do we need a change in government - sooo badly.
Where do you think the electricity is from? Most of electricity is still coming from burning fossil fuels. Electric cars and carbon tax aren't as "green" as they said. Only alternative energies like hydrogen would actually work.
Yes its starting to happen the electric vehicles people are not buying them an yes we don't have the power to do this an yes pierre isn't going to aloud it we will keep our gas an diesel vehicles it's not going to happen we will end this once trudeau is out that is for sure an ford had stop with trucks an the mustang
Already is
Not enough electricity, so don't worry about it.
Too expensive/ too cold/no charging stations will be the death message to anything EV
Even Europe is backing away from this nonsense.
Entire auto industry is toast.. everyone is broke and even ones with money arent buying e.v.s
All EVs are coal powered .They need to hook up to a pwer source to charge. And where does most of the power come from coal fired generating stations. How much caarbon to they make?
Coal is only 4% of Canada’s energy production, and falling. You don’t know what you are talking about.
We do not need the auto sector. no one need a new car. anyone can buy or sell a used car.
If stupid politicians all Drive EVS then I might drive an EV till then I will never drive an ev ever
C'mon think about it for a minute. If politicians do something stupid (and when aren't they?) - you are going to do something stupid too? No you won't - I think you are smarter than that!
I love the Tesla truck. It's just not affordable for everyone. We can mine. Justin won't allow us
Canada needs 100 new nuclear stations before we need EVs
I don't know if Trudeau's EV mandates will kill Canada's EV sector, but Biden's EV mandates sure did kill it in the USA. This is the single biggest reason, {if not the ONLY reason), I will definitely not vote for Biden. If there is any doubt, my advice is to vote Trudeau out as soon as possible, before the same idiocy we are going through in the USA comes to Canada.
the only thing thatll happen is hell steal some more cash to fill his personal bank account......nobody wants ev junk ....government controlled cars....ya sounds like fun...
Why not Maglev Train?
It's a wonderful chance for expansion and for GM to make good on earlier government subsidies. Can't wait for affordable modern vehicles from China. Right now, if you earn less than $100k you can't really afford what the other foreign brands offer.
Sure. Xi loves people like you. That’s why China’s economy is bigger than ours.
Nope. The auto industry just has to wait another 18 months. Nobody is buying EVs. Soon they will be on sale, so anybody who actually wants one will get a better price. Then the market will stabilize. Incentives and subsidies will disappear. ICE vehicles will keep their market share. Common sense will return.
The truth is due to war and the simple fact that oil isn't renewable, everything will be more expensive. The fact is that governments use the 'green' label not to scare people but the truth is that the pipe is running dry. The tax was a little bit harsh yet perhaps, necessary to shift people's minds. The new government will have to turn this tax into an incentive, failure to do this means big geopolitical issues.
The oil isn't running dry. I have heard the exact opposite.
Some naive people will believe anything. Oil reserves are being discovered every day. The “pipe” is not “running dry.”
If EVs where a good investment people would buy them. Preaching from EV fanatics won't alter the facts
Cars and automobility, directly and indirectly, kill one in every thirty four people globally. Miner - Car Harm - Journal of Transport Geography.
Yes, and water kills even more people. What's your point? Pharmaceuticals and the medical industry kill and injure millions globally every year. Should we just stop doing everything?????? Where there are fallible humans, there will be death and injury.
Bollocks.

One thing the discussion around EVs is missing, the Used Car Market.
People, especially young ones, cannot afford the Downpayment to buy a Home, does anybody with even a modicum of functioning Grey-Cells in their Head believe , that Generation is buying an insane expensive EV?
They, like many of us older Folks, start out buying CHEAP second/third hand Cars.
The very nature of EV maintenance will prohibit EVs becoming a viable Used Car option.
And it’s not only young People, how about Retirees? Contrary to popular believe not every Pensioner owns a Vacation Property in Florida, it’s called Reality!
